Russia’s war against Ukraine annihilates everything Ukrainians hold dear. It’s not only a genocide of Ukrainian people, but also an attempt to erase Ukrainian culture and an ecocide against the environment. Since the start of Russia’s brutal full-scale invasion of Ukraine, tens of thousands of culturally significant places, monuments, and works of art have been destroyed. Hundreds of thousands of culturally significant items have been damaged or stolen. Millions of acres of protected land have been adversely affected. One third of Ukraine’s territory is contaminated by landmines and other explosive hazards. Russia has irresponsibly turned Ukraine’s nuclear powerplants into military sites and unleashed the worst environmental disaster since Chernobyl by blowing up the Kakhovka dam.
The evidence of Russia’s genocide, culturecide, and ecocide against Ukraine is preserved in Svidok.org, the largest archive of war experiences from Ukraine, partnered with Ministry of Culture and Information Policy of Ukraine, Ministry of the Environment of Ukraine, all regional administrations, and the International Criminal Court. Svidok (‘witness’ in Ukrainian) is a place where civilians share their stories for the world and for future generations to understand the true scale of suffering, perseverance, and self-sacrifice that the Ukrainian people have endured for the sake of freedom.
The event will host an auction of Ukrainian artworks, including original paintings by renowned Ukrainian artists such as Kateryna Kryvolap and Anna Zaiachkivska, handmade centrepiece tapestries, and rare artefacts refurbished from the battlefield. The money raised will support expansion of the Svidok initiative and provide critical medicine to Ukraine’s frontline cities. All contributions are fully tax deductible. A year and a half of a full-scale war. More than nine years of Russian invasion. Four centuries of continuous attempts by the Russian empire to erase Ukrainian identity. From prohibitions of the Ukrainian language to burning books and killing writers and artists, Russia is attempting to destroy Ukrainian culture. Yet, today Ukraine stands and fights – not only for itself but for international law and prosperity.
“Putin’s actions bear a striking resemblance to those of previous dictators, from Hitler to Stalin. They all aim to deprive the occupied territories of their national identity by erasing their culture,” tells Tomasz Grzywaczewski, whose film “Erase the Nation”, uncovering Russia’s methodical attempts to wipe out Ukraine’s national identity and culture, will be presented at the Evening.
The Ukrainian army now numbers more than a million people, most of them volunteers. Many more millions support the army – even those who were forced to flee and lost their homes. Over three million people remain under Russian occupation but keep Ukraine in their hearts and Ukrainian flags in secret hideouts.
Svidok.org (‘witness’ in Ukrainian) collects the stories of Ukrainians who tell about their experiences, losses and coping strategies. Many are children and teenagers, sharing their fears and perseverance, in a harrowing mirror of Anne Frank’s diary from World War II. Others are young mothers giving birth to new life amid the death and destruction of war. Some recount their attempts to keep their life going despite knowing that every minute can become the last one.
“May 2023 in Kyiv. We did not sleep for almost a month due to constant air raids at night, and during the day we desperately tried to live and continue to work. Perhaps, this is one of the most sophisticated tortures – chronic sleep deprivation mixed with constant stress, fear, grief and murder. One night I was so exhausted that sirens and air raid alerts did not manage to wake me, I didn’t even hear air defence explosions. I woke up from the vibration – missiles flew over my house one after another. Exhausted, I just rolled off the bed onto the floor, face down and blanket on top, I slept amidst the explosions. Naively hoping that the space between the wall and the bed will save me. A few hours later, the alarm clock rang – a morning appointment with a cosmetologist. Yes, this is a desperate attempt to cling to a normal life in abnormal conditions.”
Some day these stories may become parts of books, movies, artworks or even operas. But today Ukrainians need help to win the war and to start rebuilding their country. An Evening to Defend Ukraine’s Cultural Heritage will auction Ukrainian artworks – original paintings by renowned Ukrainian-American artists including Leonid Gervits and Christina Saj, hand-made centrepiece tapestries, and wartime art created from artifacts refurbished from the battlefield. The money raised will support expansion of the Svidok initiative and provide critical medicine to Ukraine’s frontline cities. “The goal of Svidok is to capture Ukrainians’ lived experiences of the war. We collaborate with the International Criminal Court and the Office of the Prosecutor General of Ukraine to share evidence of war crimes. But just as importantly, we offer a safe space for Ukrainians to record their feelings and experiences. Some share personal tragedies, some offer stories of resilience, and some even write poetry from occupation. We believe that every Ukrainian has a voice and a story worth sharing,” says Anastassia Fedyk, the organizer of the evening.
The event is co-organized by the Consulate General of the Republic of Poland in New York and will feature remarks from the Ministry of Culture of Ukraine.

Diversity and Inclusion are closely related, but not the same. Diversity refers to the variety of individuals or groups, such as differences in race, ethnicity, gender, sexual orientation, and abilities, presented within a group or organization.
Inclusion, on the other hand, is about ensuring that the contribution, perspectives and presence of those individuals or groups are fully recognized and integrate, an environment in which all individuals feel welcomed, respected, and valued, and have equal access to opportunities and resources.
An organization that is diverse but not inclusive may have a mix of different people, but only certain group’s perspectives are given weight or authority.
Our society has been constructed upon the foundations of inequality, with deeply ingrained biases and prejudices that have led to the perpetuation of racism and other forms of discrimination. This includes designing and building cities with a focus on environmental, social, and economic sustainability.They are designed to be more efficient in their use of resources, to reduce pollution and waste, and promote social and economic well-being for all residents.

Sustainable cities also prioritize the use of clean and renewable energy sources, promote active transportation options such as walking and cycling, and encourage the development of green spaces and community gardens. Additionally, sustainable cities often have policies in place to support affordable housing, job opportunities, and access to education and healthcare.
By transforming all urban centers into renewable and conscientious living areas, we are increasing the quality of life for all current residents and investing in a healthy world for generations to come.
With a world population growing rapidly continuing with our usual status quo is not an option. It is more critical than ever before to transform urban areas and address the current and future challenges to health and sustainability we face.
Cities are home to about 55% of the world’s population and it is projected to increase to 68% by 2050 (United Nations, 2018. 2018 Revision of World Urbanization Prospects, D.o.E.a.S. Affairs, Editor. 2018, UN: New York, USA.). With energy consumption relying heavily on fossil fuels that accounts for around 70% carbon emissions worldwide, it presents a serious issue, not only to the quality of air, but to all biodiversity around it.

A lot of this growth is happening in emerging cities in Asia and Africa, which provides an opportunity to create the right infrastructures towards sustainable growth. However, it is also important to tackle this issue in established urban areas.
Cities offer an incredible opportunity for synergy between health and environmental actions due to the concentration of collective economic, social and technological capacities for innovation. However, urbanization is also a big driver of environmental impact, with detrimental consequences for human and natural systems. For instance, urban development greatly influences the risk of communicable and non-communicable diseases as well as consumption, production and waste, poverty and pollution on a global scale.
When it comes to sustainably transforming cities, there are three key areas that must be discussed:
Governance and planning play a crucial role in the development and management of sustainable cities. Effective governance is necessary to ensure that the needs of all residents are taken into account and that sustainable development policies are implemented and enforced. It must involve both private and public sectors to come up with agreements in how they shape their surroundings and how they operate. This planning must additionally consider long-term environmental, social, and economic impacts.
This can include the integration of green infrastructures, the promotion of active transportation options, and the development of affordable housing. Effective governance and planning also require collaboration and coordination among different levels of government, as well as the private and non-profit sectors. This can help to ensure that sustainable development policies and actions are integrated and aligned across different sectors and jurisdictions, maximizing the overall impact and benefits of sustainable cities.
Innovation and business play a vital role in the development and management of sustainable cities. Businesses and entrepreneurs can drive innovation and create new technologies and solutions that promote sustainable urban development. These innovations can range from new clean energy technologies, to sustainable transportation systems and green building design. Furthermore, sustainable business practices and corporate social responsibility can also help to reduce the environmental impact of urban areas while promoting economic growth and job creation.

Business and innovation can also play a role in financing sustainable development in cities. Private sector investment, philanthropy, and impact investing all have major opportunity for impact by funding sustainable urban projects and initiatives, complementing government funding and resources. By creating a conducive environment for sustainable business and innovation, cities attract and retain ethical companies and entrepreneurs that prioritize sustainability in their operations and products.
We have grown accustomed to a certain lifestyle that is often far from sustainable. Convenient disposable plastics, the affordability of buying a new appliance instead of fixing it, excessive water consumption and food waste, are just a few examples of how we have been abusing our resources.

Promoting a green lifestyle and consumption patterns can help to reduce the environmental impact of urban areas and improve the overall quality of a city. This includes encouraging active mobility, such as walking and cycling, improving and promoting the use of public transportation, and supporting the use of energy-efficient housing, appliances and products. Encouraging these consumption patterns can also include promoting locally-sourced and organic food options, reducing waste and promoting recycling.
The pace of building sustainable cities can vary depending on a number of factors, including the political and economic context, the level of public awareness, available education, available funding and resources. As mentioned above, there must be a great synergy between the public and private sector, and from each individual as part a community. It is important to note that building sustainable cities is a long-term process that requires complex planning. However, more problems arise as populations rapidly grow, and we must take action sooner rather than later.

Before we even had the technology to do so, science fiction portrayed AI in many forms, from the tin man in the Wizard of Oz to the humanoid robot that impersonates Maria in Metropolis. By the 1950s, we had a generation of scientists, mathematicians and philosophers with the concept of artificial intelligence culturally assimilated in their minds.
Alan Turing was a English mathematician that explored the mathematical possibility of Artificial Intelligence. He suggested, based on the fact that humans use available information as well as reason in order to solve problems and make decisions, that machines can also make decisions based on the same parameters. This was the logical framework of his 1950 paper, Computing Machinery and Intelligence in which he discussed how to build intelligent machines and how to test their intelligence.
But there was just a few set backs at the time, one of them being the fact that computers lack the key prerequisite for intelligence: they could not store commands, only execute them. In other words they could do what they were told, but they could not remember what they did. Another key factor, computers were still very expensive.

Five years later, the proof of concept was initialized by Allen Newell, Cliff Shaw and Herbert Simon. They created a program called the Logic Theorist. It was designed to mimic the problem solving skills of a human. It’s considered by many to be the first artificial intelligence program and was presented at the Dartmouth Summer Research Project on Artificial Intelligence (DSRPAI) hosted by John McCarthy and Marvin Minsky in 1956. But this historic conference fell short of expectations, with many people attending there was a failure to agree on standard methods for the field. But despite the lack of agreement one aspect was of general consensus; that Artificial Intelligence was achievable.
Between 1957 and 1974, Artificial intelligence flourished. Computers now could store more information and they became cheaper and faster. Early demonstrations such as of Newell and Simon’s that showed the promises of Artificial intelligence convinced government agencies such as the Defense Advanced Research Projects Agency (DARPA) to fund AI research at several institutions. Optimism was high and expectations were even higher. Marvin Minsky told Life Magazine, in 1970, “from three to eight years we will have a machine with the general intelligence of an average human being.” However there was still a long way to achieve it.

IBM 350 disk storage unit – The IBM 350 Disk Storage Unit was rolled out in 1956 to be used with the IBM 305 RAMAC to provide storage capacities of five, 10, 15 or 20 million characters. It was configured with 50 magnetic disks containing 50,000 sectors, each of which held 100 alphanumeric characters.
Even with such advancements in computational power and storage it was still not enough. In order to communicate, for example, computers need to store the meaning of many words and understand them in many combinations and there was just not enough storage for such large data. With patience slowly decreasing, so did the funding which lead to a slow research for the next 10 years.
In the 80’s, Artificial Intelligence saw a renewed interest, with an expansion of the algorithmic toolkit and therefore an increased funding. John Hopfield and David Rumelhart popularized “deep learning” techniques which allowed computers to learn using experience. At the same time Edward Feigenbaum introduced expert systems which mimicked the decision making process of a human expert. The program would ask an expert of a specific field how to respond in various specific situations and once there was enough data collected, people that were not from that area of expertise could get advice from that program.
With a new light, Artificial Intelligence started getting serious funding. The Japanese government heavily funded expert systems and other Artificial Intelligence related endeavors as part of their Fifth Generation Computer Project (FGCP). From 1982-1990, they invested $400 million dollars with the goals of revolutionizing computer processing, implementing logic programming, and improving artificial intelligence. But once again the expectations were to high and not achieved and research fell through.
Although, even with the lack of funding Artificial Intelligence flourished. In the 1990s many of the milestones were achieved. In 1997, world chess champion and grandmaster Garry Kasparov was defeated by IBM’s Deep Blue. This was the first time a computer, running an Artificial Intelligence program, beat a world champion chess player. While at the same time speech recognition software, developed by Dragon Systems, was implemented on Windows and even human emotions were being tackled by Cynthia Breazeal with her Kismet robot. It appeared that there wasn’t any problem a machine could not handle.

Moore’s Law states that the number of transistors on a microchip doubles every two years. The law claims that we can expect the speed and capability of our computers to increase every two years because of this, yet we will pay less for them. Another tenet of Moore’s Law asserts that this growth is exponential. This was a crucial step towards Artificial intelligence. With more computational power and more storage we could have more complex programs.

We now live in an era in which we have the capacity to collect huge amounts of information, such amounts that is to much for a human to process, in a reasonable time that is. The use of Artificial Intelligence in processing this kind of information has shown crucial in many different industries. Take Netflix for example, when you log in to you account and you get suggestions curated for you, that is Artificial Intelligence processing tons of information, all based on what you have watched before and what you have liked, being compared to their vast database of movies and series. And it does so for millions of users all around the world. This could never be done by humans. That is just one of many examples on how AI has been helping processing incredible amounts of information.
It is hard to tell what may come next, but we can expect that some technologies that are already in place will advance and become part of our daily lives even more. We can expect to see more self driving cars, more complex language AI in such that you will be able to have a fluent conversation. The goal seems to be to develop general intelligence, a machine that surpasses human cognitive abilities in all tasks.
The application of AI can help organizations operate more efficiently, produce cleaner products, reduce harmful environmental impacts, increase public safety, and improve human health. But if used unethically – e.g., for purposes such as disinformation, deception, human abuse, or political suppression – AI can cause severe deleterious effects for individuals, the environment, and society.
The increase in automated data-driven decision-making provides a wealth of opportunities to hold everyone to higher standards than ever before, and to eradicate discrimination from our economic and social systems. That is why it is imperative to develop repeatable frameworks and processes in order to enable accountability, reproducibility, and scalability.

Laws and regulations are generally insufficient to ensure the ethical use of Artificial Intelligence. It is necessary for individuals and organizations who use AI – as well as those who develop and provide AI tools and technology – to practice ethical AI. Users of Artificial intelligence must take proactive steps to make sure they are using AI ethically. This obligation goes beyond issuing statements; there must be specific policies that are actively enforced.

Nature is critical to our survival: nature provides us with our oxygen, regulates our weather patterns, pollinates our crops, produces our food, feed and fibre. But it is under increasing stress. Human activity has altered almost 75 per cent of the earth’s surface, squeezing wildlife and nature into an ever-smaller corner of the planet.
Around 1 million animal and plant species are threatened with extinction – many within decades – according to the 2019 Global Assessment Report on Biodiversity and Ecosystem Service. The report called for transformative changes to restore and protect nature. It found that the health of ecosystems on which we and all other species depend is deteriorating more rapidly than ever, affecting the very foundations of our economies, livelihoods, food security, health and quality of life worldwide.
Deforestation and desertification – caused by human activities and climate change – pose major challenges to sustainable development and have affected the lives and livelihoods of millions of people. Forests are vitally important for sustaining life on Earth, and play a major role in the fight against climate change. And investing in land restoration is critical for improving livelihoods, reducing vulnerabilities, and reducing risks for the economy.
The health of our planet also plays an important role in the emergence of zoonotic diseases, i.e. diseases that are transmissible between animals and humans. As we continue to encroach on fragile ecosystems, we bring humans into ever-greater contact with wildlife, enabling pathogens in wildlife to spill over to livestock and humans, increasing the risk of disease emergence and amplification.
The 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development was adopted by all United Nations Member states in 2015, an agenda that provides a shared blueprint for peace and prosperity for people and the planet, now and into the future.
The 17 Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs) are an urgent call for action by all countries – developed and developing – in a global partnership. They recognize that ending poverty and other deprivations must go hand-in-hand with strategies that improve health and quality education, reduce inequality, and spur economic growth – all while tackling climate change and working to preserve our oceans and forests. What’s the goal here?
To sustainably manage forests, combat desertification, halt and reverse land degradation, and halt biodiversity loss.
Why?
Forests cover nearly 31 per cent of our planet’s land area. From the air we breathe, to the water we drink, to the food we eat–forests sustain us. Forests are home to more than 80 per cent of all terrestrial species of animals, plants and insects. However, biodiversity is declining faster than at any other time in human history.
Globally, one fifth of the Earth’s land area (more than 2 billion hectares) are degraded, an area nearly the size of India and the Russian Federation combined. Land degradation is undermining the well-being of some 3.2 billion people, driving species to extinction and intensifying climate change.
Biodiversity and theecosystem services it underpins can also be the basis for climate change adaptation and disaster risk reduction strategies as they can deliver benefits that will increase the resilience of people to the impacts of climate change.
What does loss of forests mean?
Lost forests mean the disappearance of livelihoods in rural communities, increased carbon emissions, diminished biodiversity and the degradation of land. While forest loss remains high, 2020 data show that the proportion of forests in protected areas and under long-term management plans increased or remained stable at the global level and in most regions of the world.
An irreversible effect of human activity on the environment is species extinction, which upsets the balance of nature and makes ecosystems more fragile and less resistant to disruptions. A recent UN report on biodiversity found that around 1 million animal and plant species are now threatened with extinction, many within decades, more than ever before in human history.
How does it affect our health?
Increased demand for animal protein, a rise in intense and unsustainable farming, the increased use and exploitation of wildlife, and the climate crisis are all driving the increased emergence of zoonotic diseases – diseases transmitted from wildlife to people – like COVID-19. Every year, some two million people, mostly in low- and middle-in– come countries, die from neglected zoonotic diseases.
The same outbreaks can cause severe illness, deaths, and productivity losses among livestock populations in the developing world, a major problem that keeps hundreds of millions of small-scale farmers in severe poverty. In the last two decades alone, zoonotic diseases have caused economic losses of more than $100 billion, not including the cost of the COVID-19 pandemic, which is expected to reach $9 trillion over the next few years.
What can we do?
Some things we can do to help include recycling, eating a locally-based diet that is sustainably sourced, and consuming only what we need. We must be respectful toward wildlife and only take part in ecotourism opportunities that are responsibly and ethically run in order to prevent wildlife disturbance. Well- managed protected areas support healthy ecosystems, which in turn keep people healthy. It is therefore critical to secure the involvement of the local communities in the development and management of these protected areas.

The ocean drives global systems that make the Earth habitable for humankind. Our rainwater, drinking water, weather, climate, coastlines, much of our food, and even the oxygen in the air we breathe, are all ultimately provided and regulated by the sea.
Careful management of this essential global resource is a key feature of a sustainable future. However, at the current time, there is a continuous deterioration of coastal waters owing to pollution, and ocean acidification is having an adversarial effect on the functioning of ecosystems and biodiversity. This is also negatively impacting small scale fisheries.
Saving our ocean must remain a priority. Marine biodiversity is critical to the health of people and our planet. Marine protected areas need to be effectively managed and well-resourced and regulations need to be put in place to reduce overfishing, marine pollution and ocean acidification.

What’s the goal here?
To conserve and sustainably use the world’s ocean, seas and marine resources.
Why?
Oceans are our planet’s life support and regulate the global climate system. They are the world’s largest ecosystem, home to nearly a million known species and containing vast untapped potential for scientific discovery. Oceans and fisheries continue to support the global population’s economic, social and environmental needs. Despite the critical importance of conserving oceans, decades of irresponsible exploitation have led to an alarming level of degradation.
Current efforts to protect key marine environments and small-scale fisheries, and to invest in ocean science are not yet meeting the urgent need to safeguard this vast, yet fragile, resource. The drastic reduction in human activity brought about by the COVID-19 crisis, while rooted in tragedy, is a chance for oceans to recuperate. It is also an opportunity to chart a sustainable recovery path that will ensure livelihoods for decades to come in harmony with the natural environment.
So what’s the problem?
The ocean absorbs around 23 per cent of annual CO2 emissions generated by human activity and helps mitigate the impacts of climate change. The ocean has also absorbed more than 90% of the excess heat in the climate system. Ocean heat is at record levels, causing wide– spread marine heatwaves, threatening its rich ecosystems and killing coral reefs around the world. Increasing levels of debris in the world’s oceans are also having a major environmental and economic impact.
Every year, an estimated 5 to 12 million metric tonnes of plastic enters the ocean, costing roughly $13 billion per year – including clean-up costs and financial losses in fisheries and other industries. About 89% of plastic litter found on the ocean floor are single-use items like plastic bags. About 80% of all tourism takes place in coastal areas. The ocean-related tourism industry grows an estimated US$ 134 billion per year and in some countries, the industry already supports over a third of the labor force. Unless carefully man– aged, tourism can pose a major threat to the natural resources on which it depends, and to local culture and industry.
How is the ocean connected to our health?
The health of the ocean is intimately tied to our health. According to UNESCO, the ocean can be an ally against COVID-19 – bacteria found in the depths of the ocean are used to carry out rapid testing to detect the presence of COVID-19. And the diversity of species found in the ocean offers great promise for pharmaceuticals. Furthermore, marine fisheries provide 57 million jobs globally and provide the primary source of protein to over 50% of the population in least developed countries.
So what can we do?
For open ocean and deep sea areas, sustainability can be achieved only through increased inter– national cooperation to protect vulnerable habitats. Establishing comprehensive, effective and equitably managed systems of government-protected areas should be pursued to conserve bio– diversity and ensure a sustainable future for the fishing industry. On a local level, we should make ocean-friendly choices when buying products or eating food derived from oceans and consume only what we need.
Selecting certified products is a good place to start. We should eliminate plastic usage as much as possible and organize beach clean-ups. Most importantly, we can spread the message about how important marine life is and why we need to protect it.

Take urgent action to combat climate change and its impacts
The global temperature has already risen 1.1ºC above the pre-industrial level, with glaciers melting and the sea level rising. Impacts of climate change also includes flooding and drought, displacing millions of people, sinking them into poverty and hunger, denying them access to basic services, such as health and education, expanding inequalities, stifling economic growth and even causing conflict. By 2030, an estimated 700 million people will be at risk of displacement by drought alone.
Taking urgent action to combat climate change and its devastating impacts is therefore an imperative to save lives and livelihood, and key to making the 2030 Agenda for Sustainable Development and its 17 Goals – the blueprint for a better future – a reality.
In 2020, concentrations of global greenhouse gases reached new highs, and real-time data point to continued increases. As these concentrations rise, so does the Earth’s temperature. In 2021, the global mean temperature was about 1.1°C above the pre-industrial level (from 1850 to 1900). The years from 2015 to 2021 were the seven warmest on record.
To limit warming to 1.5° Celsius above pre-industrial levels, as set out in the Paris Agreement, global greenhouse gas emissions will need to peak before 2025. Then they must decline by 43 per cent by 2030 and to net zero by 2050. Countries are articulating climate action plans to cut emissions and adapt to climate impacts through nationally determined contributions. However, current national commitments are not sufficient to meet the 1.5°C target.

What’s the goal here?

Why?
The climate crisis continues unabated as the global community shies away from the full commitment required for its reversal. 2010-2019 was warmest decade ever recorded, bringing with it massive wildfires, hurricanes, droughts, floods and other climate disasters across continents.
How are people being affected by climate change?
Climate change is affecting every country in the world. It is disrupting national economies and affecting lives and livelihoods, especially for the most vulnerable. Weather patterns are changing, sea levels are rising, and weather events are becoming more extreme, affecting more than 39 million people in 2018.
What happens if we don’t take action?
If left unchecked, climate change will cause average global temperatures to increase beyond 3°C, and will adversely affect every ecosystem. Already, we are seeing how climate change can exacerbate storms and disasters, and threats such as food and water scarcity, which can lead to conflict. Doing nothing will end up costing us a lot more than if we take action now. We have an opportunity to take actions that will lead to more jobs, great prosperity, and better lives for all while reducing green– house gas emissions and building climate resilience.
Can we solve this problem or is it too late to act?
To address climate change, we have to vastly increase our efforts. Much is happening around the world – investments in renewable energy have soared. But so much more needs to be done.
The world must transform its energy, industry, trans– port, food, agriculture and forestry systems to ensure that we can limit global temperature rise to well below 2°C, maybe even 1.5°C. In December 2015, the world took a significant first step by adopting the Paris Agreement, in which all countries committed to take action to address climate change. Many businesses and investors are also committing themselves to lower their emissions, not just because it is the right thing to do, but because it makes economic and business sense as well.
Are we investing enough to tackle climate change?
Global climate-related financial flows saw a 17 per cent rise from 2013 to 2016, largely due to private investment in renewable energy, which represents the largest segment in total climate-related flows, to the amount of $681 billion.
However, investment in fossil fuels continues to be higher than in climate activities to the amount of $781 billion in 2016. To achieve a low-carbon, climate- resilient transition, a much greater scale of annual investment is required. In 2019, at least 120 of the 153 developing countries had undertaken activities to formulate and implement National Adaptation Plans to enhance climate adaptation and resilience, an increase of 29 coun– tries over the previous year. Furthermore, progress in meeting the 2020 disaster risk reduction target has been slow.

What is the goal here?
To ensure sustainable consumption and production patterns.
Why?
Economic and social progress over the last century has been accompanied by environmental degradation that is endangering the very systems on which our future development and very survival depend.
COVID-19 offers an opportunity to develop recovery plans that will reverse current trends and shift our consumption and production patterns to a more sustainable course. A successful transition will mean improvements in resource efficiency, consideration of the entire life cycle of economic activities, and active engagement in multilateral environmental agreements.
What needs to change?
There are many aspects of consumption that with simple changes can have a big impact on society as a whole. For example, the global material footprint – an indicator of the pressure put on the environment to support economic growth and to satisfy the material needs of people – grew by 17.4 per cent to 85.9 billion metric tons in 2017 as compared to 2010.
Reducing food loss and waste can contribute to environmental sustainability by lowering production costs and increasing the efficiency of food systems. Currently, we lose 13.8 per cent after harvesting and during transport, storage and processing alone, amounting to a cost of over $400 billion a year. We are also polluting water faster than nature can recycle and purify water in rivers and lakes.
How can I help as a business?
It’s in businesses’ interest to find new solutions that enable sustainable consumption and production patterns. A better understanding of environmental and social impacts of products and services is needed, both of product life cycles and how these are affected by use within lifestyles. Identifying “hot spots” within the value chain where interventions have the greatest potential to improve the environmental and social impact of the system as a whole is a crucial first step. Innovation and design solutions can both enable and inspire individuals to lead more sustainable lifestyles, reducing impacts and improving well-being.
How can I help as a consumer?
There are two main ways to help: 1. Reducing your waste and 2. Being thoughtful about what you buy and choosing a sustainable option whenever possible. Ensure you don’t throw away food, and reduce your consumption of plastic—one of the main pollutants of the ocean. Carrying a reusable bag, refusing to use plastic straws, and recycling plastic bottles are good ways to do your part every day.
Making informed purchases also helps. For example, the textile industry today is the second largest polluter of clean water after agriculture, and many fashion companies exploit textile workers in the developing world. If you can buy from sustainable and local sources you can make a difference as well as exercising pressure on businesses to adopt sustainable practices.
