We were the marketers, the account executives, the administrative assistants, and the bookkeepers. But as our businesses grow, wearing all the hats begins to feel overwhelming, and you may be feeling like you've maximized your bandwidth.

So where do you go from here? It may be time to build a team. Whether that's with one or two contractors or a team of full-time employees, building a team takes strategy and practice. In this episode of Branding Outside the Box, we unpack the ins and outs of building a successful team.

For over 8 years, I managed the books for my business, even though I'm not a trained accountant. Fortunately, Quickbooks made it easy. I was able to seamlessly invoice, process payments, monitor cash flow, and track expenses. When tax time rolled around and so many of my contemporaries were digging through shoeboxes full of receipts, I could easily generate my tax forms and file on time. Now that I've hired a bookkeeper, I can delegate her as a user on our Quickbooks online account. She inputs the data, I monitor the P&L.

Relationship-Based Leadership with Lucus Lyons Relationship-Based Leadership with Lucus Lyons Fri, 08 Nov 2019 11:00:00 +0000 This month, we're focusing on building a team. Who to hire, when to hire, and how to find the right people. Last week, I shared the difference between coaches and consultants, and which one you may need to grow your business. This week, I'm focusing on how to cultivate an engaged and loyal team, starting from the hiring process.

In my 10+ years of business, I've made a number of missteps when it comes to hiring. I've hired the wrong people, for the wrong reasons, at the wrong time. And even when I had the right people on my team, I didn't know how to effectively lead them and cultivate a team culture that made good people want to stay.

I had to learn through trial and error, but thanks to people like today's guest, Lucus Lyons, you don't have to. Lucus has 15+ years of leadership and coaching experience, both in corporate and for entrepreneurs. In 14 years at Chase Bank, his teams consistently ranked in the top 10% nationally between Chicago, Sacramento and San Francisco. The common thread to success in every location was building great relationships with his team. Now, a freelance consultant, he's bringing what he's learned in his corporate gig and helping entrepreneurs like us build better teams.

Whether you're a side-hustler, solopreneur, or have already built up your team, you won't want to miss Lucus's unique views on interviewing, leadership, and relationship building.

How Your Why Affects Your Finances with Christina Sjahli How Your Why Affects Your Finances with Christina Sjahli Fri, 25 Oct 2019 10:00:00 +0000 What you see online and what's actually behind the curtain are often quite different. If you're in the online entrepreneur space, you've seen the Instagram posts or webinar pitches with entrepreneurs boasting their 7-figure launches, living the laptop lifestyle, and making money in their sleep. Sure, their online course could have brought in seven figures and they could have done it from a beach in Bali, but did we ever stop to think about their actual take home pay? Because those seven figures may not include the investment in the advertising, marketing and man-hours to get that message in your Instagram feed.

This is what today's guest, Christina Sjahli, does for her clients. She works with companies bringing in 7-figures, even 8-figures, to create systems that ensure they keep more of their money and that the business owner is actually paying themselves a fair salary. She hones in on positive cash flow, making sure bank accounts are in the black, not the red, at the end of each month, regardless of how much is coming in at the beginning. In today's interview, she shares her financial knowledge so that we can all improve our business finances, and overall lives.

Timmons Fri, 11 Oct 2019 10:00:00 +0000 "The price that you charge is a reflection of your relationship with money, your relationship with yourself, the quality of the relationship you have with your business, and the relationship you have with the people that you serve or people that you want to serve."

That is just one of the MANY pearls of wisdom shared by today's guest, Jacquette Timmons.

Jacquette M. Timmons is a financial behaviorist. She works with everyone from the middle class to the 1% helping them manage their choices around money. In particular, she integrates financial and behavioral analysis to help people blend the emotions of money with the math of money, let go of their money "baggage," and start to move forward with financial goals more clear – feeling confident and more in control so they can save more, remove debt, invest smarter and earn more.

If her name and voice sound familiar, you may have seen her appearances on Good Morning America, CNN, Marketplace Money, Bloomberg Radio, among others. Or you may have seen her quotes in the Wall Street Journal, her articles on Oprah.com and Redbook, the list goes on. Jacquette is the go-to person for all things finances, which is why I'm so honored to have her on the show.

Listening and Speaking to Your Ideal Clients with Heidi Taylor Listening and Speaking to Your Ideal Clients with Heidi Taylor Fri, 27 Sep 2019 10:00:00 +0000

In the entrepreneur space, we're constantly being told to niche down. We offer niche services, work with niche clients, create niche products. We work hard to get as specific as we can in our business.

But when it comes to focusing in and getting specific, there is one area most entrepreneurs tend to ignore: Marketing. Their e-blasts and social media posts are all over the place, from inspirational quotes to stylized selfies to photos of their vegan and paleo lunch plate. They're on every social media platform doing every possible tactic in the entrepreneur playbook.

This trap does not apply to today's guest, Heidi Taylor, a business coach for caring business owners. Heidi has managed to not only niche down when it come to the marketing platforms she chooses, she's also niched down on the type of content she delivers. Specifically, intake form reviews.

Every Wednesday in her Instagram stories, Heidi finds a coach or consultant and reviews their intake form, point by point. Not only does this serve her audience, it gives potential clients a sneak peek into how she works. The strategy is specific, strategic, and highly effective.

In today's interview, Heidi shares how she went from floral designer, to life coach, to business coach, how she attracts her target clients through her messaging, and how we can all improve and better utilize our intake forms.

The Truth About Passive Income The Truth About Passive Income Fri, 03 May 2019 10:00:00 +0000 In the online marketing space, there is a big emphasis on creating passive income. You see so many e-courses, blogs, and podcasts dedicated to passive income strategies. Messages like "Make money in your sleep!" or "Earn six figures while sitting on the beach!" constantly plague our social media feeds and our inboxes.

But here's the truth about passive income: it's not really passive. Sure, I earn money from my books and e-courses while I'm sleeping or on vacation, but those sales the result of hours of work. Those sales come in, because I put the energy into marketing those products, setting up sales funnels, testing my marketing copy, and networking with potential clients and customers.

The sale may have happened while I was sleeping, but in order to generate that sale, I needed to be wide awake and working.

In today's episode, I'm sharing the truth about passive income and what you need to make it work for you.

The Intersection of Self-Care and Creativity with Jennifer Louden The Intersection of Self-Care and Creativity with Jennifer Louden Fri, 26 Apr 2019 10:00:00 +0000

Self care.

It seems like everyone is talking about it, and yet, many of us still feel guilty or indulgent when we do things for ourselves. Self-care isn't just about pedicures or long leisurely walks, it's about identifying what you TRULY need…and then getting it.

As today's guest, Jennifer Louden puts it, "Self-care is the radical act of saying, 'I matter.'"

When I first reached out to Jennifer about coming on the show, I was doing so because I wanted to learn more about her writing retreats and how she built her business helping writers tap into their creativity. But this conversation turned out to be so much more.

In this episode, we discuss feminism, the intersection of self-care and creativity, and the importance of setting aside time and space for creative work. I hope you enjoy this episode as much as I do, and if you do, please leave a review on iTunes. Your feedback helps keep the show going!

About Jennifer

Jennifer Louden is a personal growth pioneer who helped launch the concept of self-care with her first best-selling book The Woman's Comfort Book*. Since then, she's written six additional books on well-being and whole living, with a million copies of her books in print in nine languages. Jennifer has spoken around the U.S., Canada, and Europe, and has written a national magazine column for Martha Stewart magazine. Plus, she's been profiled or quoted in dozens of major magazines, two of Brené Brown's books Daring Greatly* and Dare to Lead*, appeared on hundreds of TV, radio shows and podcasts, and even on Oprah. Jennifer has been teaching women's writing and self-care retreats since 1992 and creating vibrant online communities and innovative learning experiences since 2000.

Influencer Marketing in 2019 with Hailey Dezort Influencer Marketing in 2019 with Hailey Dezort Fri, 12 Apr 2019 10:00:00 +0000 Influencer marketing. Chances are, you've heard that term before. But what exactly is influencer marketing and how will it make an impact on your business?

Back in February, I hosted a retreat for the Kaye Publicity team, and our publicity and marketing assistant, Hailey Dezort, delivered a fantastic presentation about the future of influencer marketing and how we can work more effectively with influencers. And she should know, she's a noted influencer herself with her bookstagram account, hayhails.

Her information was so valuable, that I invited her on the show to discuss influencer marketing, both as an influencer and as a publicist.

Influencer marketing.

But it isn't until your name has reached them at least 10 times, that you'll start to feel familiar and they'll actually consider doing business with you.

10 times. That's a lot, right?

In today's episode, I'm sharing 10 ways to get in front of potential clients and customers so you can not only make a lasting impression, but you can actually make a sale.

Growing Multiple Businesses as a Social Entrepreneur with Debra Giunta Growing Multiple Businesses as a Social Entrepreneur with Debra Giunta Fri, 15 Feb 2019 11:00:00 +0000 Many of us are multi-passionate entrepreneurs. We have big dreams and lots of ideas; we don't fit into one box. But time and again, we're told to focus on one business, one thing, and do it really well. We put those new, shiny ideas on hold.

But that's not what Debra Giunta did.

As a long-time dancer, she saw a hole in the market and was determined to create the dance education she wished she had. But as she developed her program, she realized it wasn't just about teaching dance, it was about arming young people with the social and emotional skills needed to succeed in adulthood. From there, she founded the Groove, which brought Design Dance into people's homes through a subscription box. She also founded Prismatic, a nonprofit that teaches Middle Schoolers and High Schoolers how to be mission-driven leaders.

Though each of her companies serve their audience in different ways, they all fulfill Debra's mission of empowering the next generation.

In this interview, we discuss how Debra has grown her companies and diversified her revenue streams, all while staying focused on her primary mission. Listen to the interview and then connect with Debra here:

How to Automate Your Email Marketing and Still Keep It Personal How to Automate Your Email Marketing and Still Keep It Personal Fri, 25 Jan 2019 11:00:00 +0000 If you've listened to this show, or any other shows about business and entrepreneurship, you've heard it before: the money is in the list. But as more and more entrepreneurs hop on the email marketing bandwagon, I'm noticing a different trend occur. Emails are only being sent when there's something to sell, the value in each email is decreasing, and the lack of personalization is becoming more and more noticeable.

The voice behind many of the emails I receive don't sound human. They sound robotic.

So how can we, as entrepreneurs, reach these millions of email users, speak to them as individuals, AND not let email marketing consume all of our time?

Today, I'm sharing how you can automate your email marketing while still keeping it personal.

If you haven't started your email list yet and aren't sure which service provider to choose, I encourage you to consider ActiveCampaign. We made the switch to ActiveCampaign a couple years ago and couldn't be happier.
