CERIS Spring 2021 Book Discussion: The Many Faces of Muhammad

Educators are invited to participate in the spring 2021 book discussion Faces of Muhammad: Western Perceptions of the Prophet Of Islam from the Middle Ages To Today by John V. Tolan (Princeton University Press, 2019). The event will take place at 6 PM Eastern Standard Time

Dr. Patrick Hughes (Religious Studies, University of Pittsburgh) will lead the discussion.

John V. Tolan’s book Faces of Muhammad explores the many and various ways that Europeans (and Americans) have understood, portrayed, and interpreted the life and legacy of Muhammad, the prophet of Islam. The strength of Tolan’s book is that it shows both the negative and the positive ways that Westerners have viewed Muhammad at different times and in different contexts—from those who showed outright hostility, to others who used Muhammad for their own polemical purposes, to those who viewed him with a grudging respect or outright admiration. In this CERIS book group we will discuss the origins and contexts behind these many “faces” of Muhammad to explore their historical roots and to see how the past has influenced today’s attitudes not only towards Muhammad, but also towards Islam and Muslims.

"Iranian Global Relations: Strategic Thinking in the 21st Century"

Ariane M. Tabatabai is an associate political scientist at the RAND Corporation and an adjunct senior research scholar at the Columbia University School of International and Public Affairs (SIPA). She is also a Truman national security fellow and a Council on Foreign Relations (CFR) term member.

Prior to joining RAND, she served as the director of curriculum and a visiting assistant professor of security studies at the Georgetown University Edmund A. Walsh School of Foreign Service and an international civilian consultant for NATO. Previously, Tabatabai was a post-doctoral fellow (2017-18) in the International Security Program and a Stanton nuclear security fellow (2013-14) in the International Security Program and the Project on Managing the Atom at the Harvard Kennedy School’s Belfer Center for Science and International Affairs where she was also an associate (2014–2015). Tabatabai also held positions as a non-resident scholar with the James Martin Center for Nonproliferation Studies at the Monterey Institute; senior associate in the Proliferation Prevention Program at the Center for Strategic and International Studies (CSIS), and adjunct senior fellow in the Middle East Program at the Center for A New American Security (CNAS).

She is the co-author of Triple Axis: Iran's Relations With Russia and China and has published widely in academic, policy, and mainstream outlets, including International Security, the Journal of Strategic Studies, the New York Times, the Atlantic, Foreign Affairs, and Foreign Policy. Tabatabai holds a Ph.D. in war studies from King's College London.

Khalil Gibran Muhammad to Present on Race, Inequality, and American Democracy

Khalil Gibran Muhammad, a leading scholar on racial justice in America, will share his perspective on “Race, Inequality, and American Democracy."
Muhammad is a professor of history, race and public policy at Harvard University’s Kennedy School and the Suzanne Young Murray Professor at the Radcliffe Institute for Advanced Studies. His research focuses on the racial politics of the criminal justice system, from laws to policing and punishment. His award-winning book, “The Condemnation of Blackness: Race, Crime, and the Making of Modern Urban America,” chronicles the formation of black criminality in contrast to working-class whites and European immigrants.

“Professor Muhammad is one of the foremost young scholars of the 20th century African-American and U.S. experience today,” said Joe Trotter, CMU’s Giant Eagle Professor of History and Social Justice.

Muhammad is a contributor to The Nation magazine on topics such as the way the alt-right uses social science to increase acceptance of racism. He has written about the 2018 documentary, "Stranger Fruit," about Michael Brown, who was killed by a white police officer in 2014 in Ferguson, Missouri. His work on playing “the race card” has appeared in The New York Times.

In 2017, Muhammad received the Distinguished Service Medal from Columbia University’s Teachers College. He is the former director of the Schomburg Center for Research in Black Culture, a division of the New York Public Library and the world’s leading library and archive of global black history.

Analyzing Extremist Ideologies, Online and Offline

J.M. Berger is the author of Extremism (MIT Press, August 2018). He is a research fellow with VOX-Pol and a postgraduate research student at Swansea University's School of Law, where he studies extremist ideologies. Berger's work encompasses extremism and terrorism, propaganda, and social media analytical techniques. As a consultant for social media and security companies and government agencies, he has conducted research and training on issues related to homegrown terrorism, online extremism, advanced social media analysis, and countering violent extremism (CVE).

Celebrating its 10th Anniversary, the 2016 festival will bring the ubiquitous and intimate theme of conflict to life through the power of independent film, poignant discussions, ethnic cuisine, and more. This year’s festival will both move us and enrich us by helping us better comprehend the unique ways in which “Faces of Conflict” shape our modern world and ourselves.

The festival is dedicated to Paul Goodman, a

Toward a Non-violent Solution to the Palestinian -Israeli Conflict

Combatants for Peace (CfP) is a group of former Israeli and Palestinian fighters who now embrace nonviolent struggle. They believe that joint action is necessary to break cycles of violence and achieve peace and reconciliation between Palestinians and Israelis. The presentation includes both Israeli and Palestinian men and women who will share their individual experiences as fighters and explain why they see joint non-violent advocacy for a two-state solution as the best means of ensuring peace and justice in the region.
