Love, love, love the Alphabeasts! Our favourite at the moment is the Pangolin. My son really struggles with digraphs and split-digraphs. The Pangolin explains spellings perfectly!

The relationship between literacy and self esteem is incredibly strong – like you say – it’s hard to see where one starts and the other ends. Such a simple yet fun and productive process. Drawing on the imagination of the child, and listening to how they learn, is such an obvious way to tap in to their enjoyment and productivity but it is so under-utilised in schools. As is an acknowledgment of the fact that the development of self-esteem is tightly linked with learning how to read – an activity such as this supports the overall growth of both literacy and confidence, the dream team for developing a love of reading! Thanks for such an exciting activity, Katie, I’m looking forward to trying it!

Having amazing success now, he loves it now the animals are involved. He reads to them and calls out who needs to help him – it’s brilliant! We watched a documentary on honey badgers Sunday just to add to his made-up personality for each animal – it’s great!

I totally underestimated his scope and depth of imagination and creativity until you introduced us to this method – love it!

Hi Dawn,
I am so glad you like them. They are very user-friendly – not requiring any training. I am looking for schools to trial and they can keep the packs, stickers, guide book etc for free! So, I think it’s a good deal!

I love these ideas and I am going to try them, such an inspiring read as always Kate. I don’t think we understand any where near enough about learning to read in school. I am so glad you are delving deeper and challenging things!
