We’re all human (presumably), living in bodies that sometimes do weird things. Being human also comes with no guarantees except that life is uncertain, at times chaotic and can turn on a dime for better or worse. For those of us that have brains wired for anxiety, we may pay special attention to our bodies and all of its nuances. We see and feel the noise that it makes and while this is a normal process rooted in our basic need for survival, for some of us, that noise and attention can not only become problematic but also extremely disruptive in our lives.
Heath Anxiety is not an actual diagnosis but a general term usually describing either a somatic symptom or illness anxiety disorder. Either way, the key here is that this anxiety goes beyond the general observation of the things that knock around inside us. For the health anxiety sufferer, they will not only notice but often immediately jump to the worst case scenario regarding the meaning or cause of such observances.
People with health anxiety often experience it in three ways:
All is not lost however. Throughout this post, either as a person that suffers with health anxiety or not, you will learn how it often presents itself, what not to do to make it worse, as well as some ways that have been proven to be successful in its treatment.
People with health anxiety often engage in compulsive behavior either physically or mentally. It can also be diagnosed independent to or as a theme of Obsessive Compulsive Disorder (OCD). While these behaviors are intended to relieve the anxiety, they ultimately provide more fuel for the disorder and make it worse in the long term.
Here are some examples of compulsive behavior not to do:
Look, I will never tell someone not to go to a doctor, especially if they are feeling something new or unique or concerning. That being said, people will often go to the doctor, get a clean bill of health and feel relief only to get more questions and go back and seek second and third opinions on the same problem.
This can also include demanding expensive exams, tests or even procedures to alleviate that fear. If the doctor gives you the all clear, we treat the anxiety and the fears around it. Even if they don’t give the all clear and find a there there, we still treat the unhealthy patterns around the anxiety that can limit a value driven life.
AI has its benefits and we can enter a simple question and have it find all the related research summarized very nicely for us. However this ultimately makes it worse as you will likely find some initial relief but there will be some last point, statement or even word you find that makes you think you are the exception and then begin the cycle of fear and doubt all over again.
This goes for Chat GPT and AI interfaces as well. Don’t go down that rabbit hole because there is no end. So really, don’t do it, ok?
People with health anxiety often engage in repetitive body checks, checking their pulse, breathing, looking for lymph node lumps or tumors etc. The body is asymmetrical and you will likely find something that is ambiguous that you never noticed before. I mean, if its obvious and concerning of course get it checked, but then leave it alone.
Stop the hunt or you will keep finding things that otherwise were likely always there. These behaviors reinforce doubt which again, makes it worse.
The mainstay treatment for anxiety is Cognitive Behavioral Therapy. You have probably heard of this before but in my opinion, this approach can not be a broad based brush.
For example, identifying, labeling and challenging irrational thoughts and beliefs with evidence of the contrary (a core tenet of traditional CBT) can be an effective approach for many. However if a person with health anxiety also has OCD, or if it is a theme of OCD, then we want to use a special form of CBT called Exposure and Response Prevention.
Here we are essentially exposing the individual to the thing about their health that makes them anxious and then teaching them how not to rely on the compulsions that fuel the disorder. Its much more nuanced than that and should be guided by a therapist but eventually this approach sends the message from the brain to the body that there is no danger here at this moment, even if there is a diagnosed health issue that is being treated.
Finally Acceptance and Committal Therapy (ACT) is also a good approach to help individuals learn that not all thoughts need to be responded to. Catastrophic thoughts are just thoughts that can come and go. When we take the meaning away from the thoughts, it helps us to loosen our grip on the continued anxiety and directs us towards or values.
So if you’re dealing with health anxiety, there is hope. There are ways to live a full and rewarding life by putting your fears into remission. With the help of an experienced therapist, one that should also understand ERP, people can put their fears behind them and start being more present and enjoying the life that they may be so afraid to lose.

The ground is starting to become more clear and its almost time to start to think about what life will be like when we land. The irony here is that unlike the excitement and wonderment of take off, there is a knowledge that once we arrive and de-board, life will look very different. As parents of twins, this will hit one time, with a double punch and I fully expect to wake up the next day feeling like I’ve lost a piece of myself.
It seems that there’s an abundance of information, support and advice for those expecting and new parents but what about the ones who come back home to empty rooms, deafening silence and halls filled with old artifacts and memories? It can feel like they are on their own. However, the truth I believe, is in part that these days parents have become closer to their children than perhaps we were with our own. Therefore, the existential crises that looms after children take their first huge leap into a larger world to find their independence can feel like a hole that needs to be filled.
Instead however, what if it isn’t a hole that needs to be filled but rather just a ticket to a new flight…destination unknown. As an empty nester, you could understand this trip into the unknown because it has been taken before when you became a parent and led to your substantiative growth as person. Being a parent does that. This time however, the trip isn’t to grow and develop your children’s sense of independence, it is to grow and re-develop your own. What does that look like though?
Often parents don’t remember life before children representative of how it actually was. Sure there may be fleeting thoughts of parties, a lack of responsibilities that you incur as a parent and the ability to put your wants and needs first. Wait, has that much really changed now that the kids are now on their own? What if…this was a chance to get to know your partner again. What if, in the space that was left you get to experience what your passions are now through the eyes of a more knowledgable and hopefully financially stable viewpoint? What if…you can reinvent and or awaken any dormant version of yourself that had to take a backslide to the daily needs of raising kids. This can be the moment that you not only get to re-explore and get to know your partner (if you have one) but also yourself and your new place in the world as a parent of independent children. Raising independent children was the goal after all, even if you didn’t realize it. An existential crises or dilemma can soon become the fuel for self actualization on a level you have not experienced before. You have the tools now.
Remember dads, its okay to grieve this loss too. We often think of moms as the ones who experience grief around the empty nest but this couldn’t be further from the truth. While nothing can replace a mother’s bond with their children, having carried them and given birth to them, a father is not exempt for the grief that comes with realizing that they too have landed in this transitional space and no longer carry the labels of coach, caregiver, protector etc. Men unfortunately however often don’t speak to friends, partners or professionals on the subject, choosing to keep it in. As a father myself, I implore you to fight that instinct if it exists. Its okay to grieve, to mourn and miss what was. Your partner is in that place too too and if you are a singe parent dealing with navigating this transition and loss, recognize that so are the toughest of your friends, even if they seem to be celebrating the transition overtly.
In the end, even through that transitional sadness and grief, you can still purposefully grow, explore and re-create yourself and life. So after the kids have gone and your spending some time staring at old photos on your phone, aimlessly going into their rooms or wishing you had a time traveling DeLorean, maybe purchase some new airline tickets (real or metaphorical) for your next big adventure.

]]>We see you.
You’re trying to savor the last days of summer while Target ads scream “back-to-school,” your
inbox is drowning in school emails, and your child is melting down because they wish they were
homeschooled (or an adult… or maybe even their pet dog). Maybe today even is your child’s first
day/week of school…or yours!
Here’s the thing: back-to-school is hard…for everyone.
Kids are moving from freedom to structure, from sunshine to 7 hours at a desk, and from the
known of summer to the unknown of a new classroom, teachers, school, friends, etc. And for their
nervous system? Unknown = danger. That’s why the meltdowns, the sass, the clinginess shows up.
This is normal for kids!
Now they return from school… they held it together all day but come home and completely
unravel? That’s not them being “bad.” That’s something called restraint collapse. They held in their
emotions all day and now their restraint that was used all day…has collapsed because they are
comfortable. AKA – You’re their safe place, which means you get the big feelings. (Lucky you
but also…it’s a compliment.)
So what do you do?:
1. Validate: “I get it, this feels scary.” Naming the feeling helps tame/ calm the brain, and of course
helps the child feel heard and seen.
2. Give space to decompress after school. Try your best to reduce the “how was your day?”
questions. These can be overwhelming for kids experiencing many big emotions and not knowing
how to communicate with them.
3. Skip the “you’ll be fine!” pep talks. Instead, be with your child, and connect. Sitting with them
through these emotions teaches them you can tolerate these feelings; in turn so can they! Co-
regulation is at work here!
4. Remember, it’s only temporary.
Your child (or you, the parent) doesn’t need you to fix all of it. They just need you to be their steady
anchor through the waves.
You and your child can conquer this! We believe in you both With you in this,
Your Friendly Neighborhood Therapists

At Blueprint Mental Health in Somerville, NJ, we specialize in helping children as young as three develop emotional awareness, coping skills, and confidence through compassionate, evidence-based therapy.
Children experience stress and mental health challenges just like adults, but they often lack the language and tools to express what they’re feeling. Some common reasons parents reach out to a child therapist include:
Anxiety — fears about school, separation, or social situations
Behavioral challenges — emotional outbursts, defiance, or aggression
Depression — changes in sleep, appetite, or interest in activities
Trauma or grief — processing significant life changes or losses
Difficulty with emotional regulation — managing frustration or big feelings
Social struggles — challenges with friendships and peer relationships
If your child is showing signs of distress, seeking help from a child therapist in NJ can be an important step toward healing.
Finding the right therapist is about more than credentials — it’s about fit, trust, and approach. Here are a few things to consider:
Not every therapist works with children. At Blueprint, our team includes clinicians who specialize in child therapy and understand the unique developmental and emotional needs of kids.
We help children learn healthy coping strategies while also supporting parents through parent coaching so the skills we teach in therapy extend to home and school life.
Children benefit most from structured, research-backed approaches that meet them where they are. At Blueprint, we use:
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): Helps children understand how their thoughts, feelings, and behaviors are connected.
DBT Skills: Teaches emotion regulation, mindfulness, and distress tolerance techniques in a kid-friendly way.
Play-Based & Creative Interventions: We incorporate art, play, and storytelling to help children express themselves when words feel too big or hard.
A child’s progress improves when families are involved. Our approach integrates parents into the process, offering coaching, regular check-ins, and sometimes family therapy to strengthen communication and relationships at home.
Finding the right child therapist in NJ can feel overwhelming — but at Blueprint, we make the process supportive, collaborative, and personalized. Here’s why parents across New Jersey choose us:
Specialized Care: Our clinicians are trained in child-specific therapies and experienced in supporting kids with anxiety, depression, OCD, trauma, and behavioral challenges.
Collaborative Approach: We partner with parents, teachers, pediatricians, and other providers to build a complete support system for your child.
Welcoming Environment: Our space is designed to feel comfortable and safe — not cold or clinical.
Skill Building for the Whole Family: We believe lasting change happens when children and parents learn tools together.
Taking the first step toward getting your child help can feel daunting, but we make it easy:
Step 1: Schedule a free consultation call to talk about your child’s needs and goals.
Step 2: Meet your therapist in an informal first session designed to help your child feel safe and comfortable.
Step 3: Begin a personalized treatment plan tailored to your child and family.
At Blueprint Mental Health, we’ll walk alongside you to ensure your child has the tools, confidence, and support they need to thrive.

Whether it’s your child, teen, or yourself who is struggling, finding the right OCD therapist in NJ can make all the difference. At Blueprint Mental Health in Somerville, NJ, we specialize in helping clients break free from the OCD cycle using compassionate, evidence-based treatment approaches.
OCD is often misunderstood. It isn’t simply about being overly neat or organized — it involves unwanted, intrusive thoughts (obsessions) and repetitive behaviors or mental rituals (compulsions) that someone feels driven to perform to relieve anxiety.
Some common signs of OCD include:
Persistent, intrusive thoughts you can’t control
Compulsions like repeated handwashing, checking, or counting
Avoidance of people, places, or situations that trigger anxiety
Hours spent daily performing rituals or trying to suppress thoughts
Feelings of shame, guilt, or frustration around these patterns
If this sounds familiar, you’re not alone — and the right OCD therapist in NJ can help.
OCD requires specialized treatment — not every therapist is trained to address it effectively. Here’s what to look for when searching for support:
At Blueprint, we specialize in proven approaches for OCD, including:
ERP (Exposure and Response Prevention): The gold standard treatment for OCD. ERP helps clients face their fears gradually and resist compulsions in a safe, structured way.
CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy): Teaches clients how thoughts, emotions, and behaviors are connected, providing tools to manage intrusive thoughts.
DBT Skills: For clients who also experience high emotional sensitivity, DBT teaches mindfulness and distress tolerance skills.
When OCD affects a child or teen, it often impacts the entire family. That’s why our treatment integrates:
Family Therapy to improve communication and reduce stress at home
Parent Coaching to teach parents how to support their child’s progress without reinforcing compulsions
Coordination with schools, psychiatrists, and other providers to ensure comprehensive care
OCD can be deeply isolating and sometimes embarrassing to talk about. At Blueprint, we provide a welcoming, judgment-free space where you or your child can feel safe opening up about fears, rituals, and struggles.
At Blueprint Mental Health, we’re more than just therapists — we’re partners on your journey to healing. Here’s why clients across New Jersey choose us when searching for an OCD therapist in NJ:
Specialized OCD Expertise: Our clinicians are trained in ERP, CBT, and other evidence-based treatments proven to work.
Collaborative, Team-Based Approach: With 14 highly trained clinicians, we share insights and strategies to provide the highest level of care.
Skills for Lasting Change: We empower clients — and their families — with tools to manage OCD now and into the future.
Comfortable, Supportive Setting: Our Somerville office feels warm and inviting, helping clients relax and engage in treatment.
Taking the first step toward treatment can feel overwhelming — but we make it simple:
Step 1: Schedule a free consultation call to discuss your needs and goals.
Step 2: Meet your therapist in an informal first session designed to make you or your child feel safe and supported.
Step 3: Begin a personalized treatment plan tailored to your unique challenges and strengths.
OCD doesn’t have to control your life. With the right support, you can break free from compulsions, manage intrusive thoughts, and live with greater confidence and peace.
