]]>Healthy bonsai require regular fertilization because they grow in a small amount of soil (inorganic) and quickly use available nutrients. At Bonsai Learning Center, we recommend a two-step fertilization program during the growing season (approximately March through September where we are North Carolina). This instructional guide is for bonsai in pots.
Apply organic fertilizer cakes on the soil surface using fertilizer cups.
The fertilizer cups allow water and rain to carry nutrients into the soil while preventing the organic fertilizer from breaking apart and clogging the soil matrix.

]]>Your bonsai is a living tree in a small container. The key to success is observation. Check your tree often, water when needed, and adjust care as the seasons change. Beginner success starts with watering, environmental needs, tree health, and foundational horticulture practices.
We normally water our trees daily especially during the growing season, due to the inorganic soil that we use and the small containers. It is best to use a hose with a fine rose and water thoroughly until water runs freely from the drainage holes. The goal is evenly moist soil throughout the pot. When you do water, you can’t water enough as most of the water drains through the holes in the bottom of the pot.
It is OK to have the top couple of centimeters dryer before watering again. You can place your finger into the soil to feel the soil to see if it is dry or not.
Best time to water: early morning. Avoid late evening watering when possible because wet soil overnight can encourage fungal problems.

Most outdoor bonsai should live outside, not indoors. This includes but not limited to, pines, junipers, maples, elms etc. They need sunlight, airflow, seasonal changes, and natural dormancy. Tropical bonsai, such as ficus, can be grown indoors in bright light and protected from cold.
Junipers and pines love sun while most deciduous tress such as maples and elms want more shade and definitely protected from sun in the afternoons.
If your tree starts declining, check placement first. Too little light, too much heat, dry indoor air, or poor airflow can all stress a bonsai.
Bonsai soil is different from regular potting soil. It should drain quickly, allow air to reach the roots, and support healthy growth in a small container. Heavy garden soil can compact, hold too much water, and suffocate roots. This is why we use inorganic soil for our bonsai which allows fast draining and a lot of air exchange, which encourages root growth to sustain the tree.
Do not let your bonsai sit in standing water unless you have been specifically told that your species can tolerate it, such as bald cypress.
Because bonsai live in small pots with limited soil, nutrients are used up quickly. Feed during the growing season, generally from spring through summer and into early fall. Temperate trees should not be fertilized during winter dormancy. Tropical or indoor trees may receive reduced feeding year-round. We recommend both an organic cake and organic liquids to provide a good balanced diet including micro nutrients.

Light pruning helps maintain shape and encourages compact growth. Remove dead, damaged, or unwanted growth with clean, sharp tools. Avoid heavy pruning when the tree is weak, newly repotted, or under stress.
For major styling, wiring, or branch removal it is important to do those at the right time of year for each species of tree.
Winter care depends on the type of tree and where you are.
Tropical and semi-tropical bonsai must not freeze. Protect them when nighttime temperatures drop into the low 50s°F. Temperate and hardy bonsai need winter dormancy, but their roots still need protection because roots in bonsai pots are more exposed than roots in the ground.
For hardy outdoor bonsai, protect the pot from harsh wind and repeated freeze-thaw cycles. Place trees in a shaded, wind-protected area and insulate pots with mulch. Placing your bonsai on the ground and mulching to the pot rim with cedar or cypress mulch is a great way to protect the root system. Temperate bonsai need to have dormancy, so freezing is OK, we just want to control the fluctuation as much as possible.
Inspect your tree often, especially while watering. Look for discolored or curling leaves, wilting tips, damaged foliage, sticky residue, webbing, fuzz under leaves, or unusual spots. Regular observation is key, because small problems can escalate quickly in a bonsai pot.
Before treating, identify the problem. Overwatering, underwatering, poor light, and nutrient issues can look like pests or disease.
Most bonsai are repotted every 2 to 3 years. Some species such as maple have aggressive root growth and can be repotted every year. Most bonsai are repotted in the spring as they start to push new growth.

]]>The practice of creating a bonsai from two separate sources of plant material, one living and one long dead, has sparked ongoing discussion within the Western bonsai community. These creations are known in Japan as tanuki bonsai and in the West as phoenix grafts.
At its core, a tanuki bonsai combines a piece of aged, naturally weathered deadwood with a young, flexible living tree. Over time, the living tree grows into and around the deadwood, creating the illusion of an ancient specimen that has survived centuries of hardship.
In Japan, tanuki bonsai are generally regarded as playful artistic exercises rather than legitimate bonsai. The word tanuki refers to a badger, an animal that appears frequently in Japanese folklore as a clever trickster that disguises itself as something it is not. This association explains why tanuki bonsai are often viewed as visually impressive, yet fundamentally deceptive.
Because of this cultural context, tanuki bonsai are rarely displayed in formal Japanese exhibitions. They are appreciated for enjoyment and experimentation, but not typically judged alongside traditionally developed bonsai.
In contrast, many Western artists view tanuki bonsai through a different lens. The term phoenix graft, popularized by American bonsai artist Dan Robinson, reflects a more symbolic interpretation. Like the mythical phoenix rising from ashes, this technique brings new life to ancient deadwood, transforming discarded material into a powerful artistic statement.
From this viewpoint, tanuki bonsai are judged not by their origin, but by their ability to evoke emotion, realism, and respect for nature.

A tanuki bonsai is inherently temporary. How long it lasts depends almost entirely on the quality of the deadwood used. Water is the primary enemy. Any deadwood that remains in constant contact with moisture will eventually decay.
Dense, resinous, slow-rotting woods are essential. Old juniper deadwood collected from arid environments is ideal, as it resists decay and weathers attractively over time. Softer woods or recently dead material are poor candidates and will fail quickly.
Some artists treat buried portions of the deadwood with wood preservatives to slow decay. If this approach is used, care must be taken to ensure chemicals do not leach into the soil and harm the living tree.
Tanuki bonsai are not instant creations. Expect a development period of three to five years before the tree begins to resemble a finished bonsai.
Begin with a large training container that allows for strong root development and vigorous top growth. Plastic tubs, wooden grow boxes, or oversized mica training pots are excellent choices. Refinement containers should be selected only after the tree has matured.
Junipers are the most common species used for tanuki bonsai. They are flexible, durable, and capable of surviving the physical stress involved in the process. Pines, yews, firs, and hemlocks may also be used, though they require more patience and skill.
Young, slender material is preferred with a trunk roughly the diameter of a finger is ideal. The tree must tolerate drilling, bending, and abrasion during installation. Species with brittle wood or delicate bark are poor candidates and should be avoided for early attempts.
The objective is realism. The finished tree should look as though it was shaped by nature, not constructed for theatrical effect.
The process of creating a tanuki bonsai is highly mechanical. Artistic refinement comes later. The following steps focus strictly on construction and stability.
Prepare the training container by drilling tie-down holes and securing drainage screens. Use heavy copper wire to ensure long-term stability.

Determine the planting angle of the deadwood. The base must sit flat and parallel with the bottom of the container. Mark and cut the base carefully so it rests securely.



Install eyelet screws into solid sections of the deadwood near the base. These will later anchor the deadwood firmly to the container and will remain hidden beneath the soil.

Place stone or slate in the bottom of the container. This elevates the deadwood, reduces contact with moisture, and slows decay.

Select the live tree and determine its placement against the deadwood. Remove foliage that will be trapped between the trunk and the deadwood. Mark the groove location. Remove the tree from its pot and wrap the root mass tightly to prevent drying.


Using a rotary tool with a rounded router bit, carve a groove into the deadwood. The channel must be deeper and wider than the live trunk to allow future growth. Ensure that a portion of the live trunk, known as the lifeline, will remain visible from the front of the composition.


Fit the live tree into the groove and secure it using screws with washers. Work slowly from the base upward, using as few fasteners as possible. Avoid placing roots directly beneath the deadwood base, as this will interfere with seating the snag.



Position the stone and add a thin soil layer. Place the tanuki into the container and gently spread the roots. Remove only enough soil to allow proper placement.

Secure the planting firmly using copper wire threaded through the eyelets. Eliminate air pockets with chopsticks and water thoroughly. Protect the tree from sun and wind for two weeks. Resume feeding after three to four weeks and fertilize heavily for the next two years.


Allow the tree time to grow. After approximately one year, the screws may be removed once the trunk has set. As roots strengthen, the need for heavy tie-down wiring will decrease.

Once the tree is clearly thriving, traditional bonsai techniques may be applied. Branch wiring, deadwood carving, and refinement of form should proceed gradually.
Do not repot for at least two years, as strong growth during this period is critical to the success of the composition.
Tanuki bonsai sit at the intersection of horticulture, sculpture, and philosophy. Whether viewed as playful illusion or serious artistic expression, they demand technical skill, patience, and respect for materials.
Ultimately, each artist must decide how they define authenticity in bonsai. What matters most is not how the tree began, but whether it convincingly tells a story of age, endurance, and natural beauty.

]]>Raft style bonsai is a striking multi-trunk composition created from a single original tree laid horizontally along the soil surface. Over time, new trunks rise upward from that horizontal trunk, creating the illusion of several trees growing together naturally.
Two closely related forms exist within this approach: raft style and sinuous style. Both rely on the same horticultural technique, but they differ in visual interpretation.

Raft Style represents a tree that has been blown over by wind or snow. The original trunk lies straight along the ground, takes root, and branches on the upward side develop into new vertical trunks. This produces a formal, linear composition with a strong sense of direction.
Sinuous Style suggests a surface root or fallen trunk that has wandered across the ground. The horizontal trunk may curve or undulate, and the vertical trunks emerge at irregular intervals. This version feels more organic and spontaneous.
One major advantage of both styles is that trees with one-sided branching can often be used effectively by placing the bare side downward and allowing the branched side to form the new forest canopy.
When laying the trunk down, pay attention to any existing curve or bow. If present, orient the curve toward the back of the planting. This increases visual depth and prevents the composition from appearing flat.
To enhance realism, allow a combination of vertical trunks and horizontal branches. Some horizontal branches can be ground layered for a short distance before being trained upward, creating additional trunks and complexity.
Flexible branches may be bent gently into position. Stiffer branches may require a shallow wedge cut on the underside to allow them to be raised safely without splitting.
All branches on the underside of the trunk must be removed completely. The remaining branches should be wired in their future positions before planting.
Special care must be taken with wire placement. During the first transplant, wire can become entangled with developing roots and become extremely difficult to remove later. It is often best to remove all wire at the first repotting once branches have set.
Instead of wiring each branch individually around the trunk, you may:
Whichever method is chosen, the goal is stability without interference with new roots.

Root formation is achieved through controlled wounding of the trunk underside.
Alternatively, shallow wedge-shaped grooves cut horizontally through the cambium also encourage root production.
Avoid excessive rooting hormone. Too much can cause wounds to heal over rather than produce roots.

To further encourage root development, place a heavy wire between the original root system and the trunk and tighten it firmly. This restricts, but does not stop, nutrient flow to the old roots, prompting the tree to generate new roots along the horizontal trunk.
At the time of planting, remove approximately fifty percent of the existing root mass. This encourages aggressive root production in the desired locations.
Do not over-reduce the old root ball. Until new roots form, it remains the tree’s only source of nutrients.
Plant the raft into a training box filled with a free-draining, sandy soil mix. Bury the horizontal trunk shallowly, deep enough to encourage rooting underneath but not so deep that roots form along the new vertical trunks.
Stability is critical. New roots will only form if the planting does not move. Tie the trunk securely into the container.
If portions of the old root ball remain exposed, cover them with moss or mulch to prevent drying.

Root formation typically takes one to two growing seasons.
After the first year, lift the planting and inspect root development.
Repeat this process annually until the planting is fully supported by new roots.

Fast-rooting species are best suited for raft style.
Raft style also adapts beautifully to rock plantings, where the trunk follows stone contours before rooting.
An additional benefit of multi-trunk styles is that once established, individual trunks can be separated and trained as independent bonsai. This method is often faster and more reliable than traditional air layering.


Raft style bonsai is a powerful fusion of horticulture and design. It rewards patience, careful planning, and a willingness to think beyond traditional upright forms. When executed well, it captures the drama of survival and regeneration found in nature, transforming a single tree into an entire living landscape.

]]>A forest bonsai shifts the viewer’s focus away from any single tree and toward the collective presence of the group. The goal is not to showcase individual perfection, but to create the feeling of a natural woodland that was shaped by time, competition, and environment.
This approach differs from Saikei, which often combines trees with grasses, groundcovers, and prominent rock features. In forest bonsai, trees remain the dominant element, and all other components exist only to support the illusion of a living forest.

Successful forest plantings begin with thoughtful material selection. Most forests are created using a single species, which helps maintain visual cohesion and simplifies care. When different species are combined, they must share similar needs for light, water, and seasonal treatment.
Trees chosen for a forest do not need flawless bonsai proportions. In fact, slight irregularities often enhance realism. In a group setting, trunks that might feel awkward on their own can contribute character and depth when placed in relationship to others. The strength of a forest lies in how the trees interact and not in how they perform individually.
Forest bonsai are typically planted in wide, shallow containers that emphasize horizontal space. These containers act as a landscape stage rather than a decorative frame, allowing the artist to suggest terrain, distance, and movement.
Unglazed trays in neutral earth tones are commonly used, as they remain visually quiet and allow the planting to take precedence. Since no single tree is meant to dominate attention, ornate or dramatic containers are usually avoided.
A convincing forest relies on variation in height and trunk thickness. Most plantings include:
This hierarchy mirrors real forests, where older trees tower above younger growth. Establishing a clear visual order helps the planting feel natural and prevents the composition from becoming flat or confusing.

Forest bonsai often contain an odd number of trees, commonly between three and nine. Odd numbers naturally avoid symmetry, which supports a more organic appearance. That said, even-numbered forests are not forbidden and what matters most is maintaining imbalance that still feels stable.
As the number of trees increases, so does the challenge of keeping the design readable. Larger forests require careful spacing and strong visual planning to avoid clutter.
Forest plantings require patience and preparation. Because roots are exposed and repositioned repeatedly during layout, they must be kept moist at all times. Root balls should be wrapped in damp material or temporarily soaked while arrangements are tested.
Due to the extensive root work involved, forest bonsai should be created only in early spring, just as buds begin to swell. At this stage, trees are entering their most resilient growth phase and recover more easily from disturbance.
Forest bonsai are often organized into small groupings within the larger planting. These internal clusters typically form triangular relationships that echo the same design logic used in single-tree bonsai.
Trees are usually positioned toward the back and sides of the container, leaving a more open foreground. This creates the suggestion of a clearing and encourages the viewer’s eye to move through the scene. Soil levels are rarely flat; subtle rises and dips add realism and reinforce the sense of terrain.
Larger trees are placed closer to the front, while smaller trees recede into the background, strengthening the illusion of distance despite the shallow container.

Branches in forest bonsai generally extend outward rather than inward. Inward-growing branches disrupt visual flow, block light, and weaken interior growth over time. Clear sightlines between trunks are essential to preserving depth and readability.
Canopy development follows the same principles used in single-tree bonsai: balance, direction, and negative space. However, pruning decisions must always consider how one tree affects the others, ensuring that no single canopy overwhelms the group.
After planting, forest bonsai should be treated as freshly repotted trees. Provide protection from direct sun and wind for the first one to two weeks, maintain high humidity, and gradually reintroduce full exposure.
As the forest matures, ongoing care focuses on preserving hierarchy. Dominant trees must remain visually dominant, while secondary trees are managed to support and not compete with the main structure. Forests evolve over time, and periodic adjustments are part of their natural refinement.
Forest bonsai are not simply collections of trees, they are expressions of environment and time. A planting may suggest a quiet grove, a windswept hillside, or an aging woodland shaped by competition and survival.
While forests often follow established design principles, they do not need to be rigid or uniform. Slanting forests, sparse groupings, or compositions centered around a single massive tree can be just as compelling when asymmetry and balance are respected.
A well-designed forest bonsai invites the viewer into a miniature world. Through thoughtful material selection, careful spacing, and attention to visual hierarchy, the artist creates not just a planting, but a place.

]]>During dormancy, a bonsai’s internal activity is reduced much like a bear hibernating through winter. While this can be a confusing time for beginners, understanding what is happening biologically is the key to keeping your trees healthy year after year.
A common misconception among beginners is that cold temperatures will kill bonsai. While this is true for tropical species, most temperate and hardy bonsai actually require cold weather to remain healthy.
Without a proper rest period, trees behave like marathon runners who never stop to recover. They slowly lose vigor and eventually fail. This often happens when temperate bonsai are kept indoors during winter out of fear of freezing. Providing the correct dormant conditions allows trees to recharge and emerge strong in spring.
Successful overwintering begins with two pieces of information:
Tree hardiness varies by species, just as climate varies by geography. The USDA Hardiness Zone Map is an excellent reference for determining the historical low temperatures in your area. Your winter protection strategy should always be based on the intersection of tree hardiness and local climate extremes.
All bonsai fall into one of four general categories:
Trees must transition into dormancy slowly and naturally as seasons change. In summer, growth is active. In fall, growth slows. In winter, activity largely stops. Spring then reverses the process.
Forcing a tree abruptly into dormancy, or preventing dormancy entirely can cause long-term harm.

Tropical and semi-tropical species (such as ficus, fukien tea, serissa, and pomegranate) must be protected once nighttime temperatures drop into the low 50s°F. These trees must not freeze.
Unlike temperate species, tropical bonsai continue to grow slowly through winter, so they require ongoing care.
Light
Place tropicals in the brightest location available, ideally a south-facing window or heated sunroom. Rotate trees regularly to ensure even exposure. If natural light is insufficient, fluorescent lighting placed 3–4 inches above the canopy for 15–18 hours per day works well.
Humidity
Indoor winter air is very dry. Increase humidity by:

Water carefully as growth is slower, so overwatering can cause root rot. Watch closely for pests, which thrive in dry indoor conditions.
Some growers successfully overwinter tropical bonsai in spare bathrooms using benches, humidity trays, and fluorescent lights on timers. The enclosed space maintains humidity without affecting the rest of the home.
For temperate and hardy bonsai, the goal is not to prevent cold, but to reduce its most damaging extremes.
Bonsai roots are far more vulnerable to cold than branches. Unlike trees in the ground, bonsai roots are exposed on all sides of the pot, including from below. This makes some winter protection essential even for fully hardy species.
Common locations include under decks, against foundations, or in unheated garages.


In very cold regions, temperate (but not fully hardy) species require additional protection through cold frames.
A cold frame is an insulated enclosure that:
Light is not required during dormancy, even for evergreens.
Cold frames can be built from wood, brick, plastic, or cinder block and placed:
The biggest risk is overheating on sunny days, which can break dormancy too early and lead to failure.
In extremely dry winter climates, maintain humidity by misting the interior and placing open containers of water inside the cold frame.
Winter dormancy is not a threat to bonsai, it is a biological necessity. When trees are allowed to rest naturally and protected appropriately from extremes, they emerge healthier, stronger, and more resilient in spring.

]]>Displaying bonsai is an art form all its own. It’s not just about showing a beautiful tree, it’s about creating a complete visual story that reflects harmony, balance, and meaning. Proper bonsai display transforms the tree into a piece of art.
In Japan, the formal art of display is called Keidō, a discipline that can take years to study. It blends aesthetic, philosophical, and cultural principles to guide how bonsai are presented. Yet many of its core ideas including balance, proportion, and relevance are universal artistic truths. Western bonsai artists can apply these same principles effectively, adapting them to our own cultural sensibilities and display settings.
The term “proper display” is always relative. A bonsai may be displayed in many different environments:
Each situation requires adjustments in how the display elements are chosen and arranged.
In Japan, a tokonoma is a traditional recessed alcove built to specific proportions within the home, designed for viewing art or bonsai at floor level. In Western practice, what we often call a tokonoma is really a viewing alcove. A simple, elevated display area or box designed for standing or seated viewing. A bonsai display within this setting highlights its beauty.
Regardless of the setting, the display space should remain austere and uncluttered. Neutral backdrops, soft lighting, and minimal ornamentation help the bonsai command attention as the focal point of the composition.
A successful bonsai display typically includes three main components:
This is the centerpiece of the display which is usually the bonsai itself, though it may also be an ikebana arrangement or a suiseki (viewing stone). Whatever it is, it should dominate visually and emotionally. All other elements should support and defer to it.
Also called the accent, this smaller element enhances and complements the focal tree. It might be a kusamono (accent plant), a small stone, a figurine, or a moss arrangement. It should echo the season or mood of the main tree without competing for attention.
Traditionally represented by a scroll, this background element provides context much like the distant scenery in a landscape. In Western displays, this could be a minimalist painting, photograph, or other artwork that reinforces the overall theme.
When these three elements are combined correctly, they evoke a natural progression; foreground, middle ground, and background, just as one would experience when viewing a landscape in nature.
Imagine standing in a field:
The display should guide the viewer’s eye naturally through these layers, creating both depth and tranquility. In this bonsai display, harmony is key.
Every effective bonsai display embodies three key artistic principles:
All elements must relate naturally to one another. A spring-blooming bonsai might be paired with a scroll of a bird or blossom, while a winter tree might feature a painting of the moon or bare landscape. The chosen accents should reinforce the season, setting, or feeling expressed by the tree.
The tree is the star. Every supporting element including accent, artwork, container, and stand — must remain subordinate. If a viewer’s first comment is about the pot or accessory rather than the bonsai itself, the composition has failed.
Aim for asymmetrical balance. The focal tree should sit off-center, with accents and scrolls arranged to guide the eye along the tree’s line of movement. Avoid crowding or direct overlap of elements. Each should have space to “breathe.”
Rules provide structure, but great displays come alive through intuition. When the combination of bonsai, stand, accent, and artwork feels right, it resonates instinctively to both the artist and the viewer. Moreover, an engaging bonsai display evokes emotional response.
