This year’s event will be held Sept. 18–20 at a new venue, Snow Fork Event Center outside Nelsonville. There’s a full lineup of food trucks, vendors selling handmade crafts and educational seminars focusing on topics like pawpaw cultivation, edible native plants, butterfly conservation, sustainability and other nature-based topics. Activities for children and a stellar line up of live musicians, not to mention square dancing, add even more fun to the weekend. 

And, of course, there will be ample opportunities to taste pawpaws, both the fruit itself and foods prepared from it. In fact, the food vendors are all required to offer at least one dish prepared with pawpaws. So, visitors can expect to sample pawpaw ice cream, cream puffs, pancakes, doughnuts and even savory dishes like barbecue chicken and Thai noodles prepared with pawpaws. There will even be several varieties of pawpaw beer on hand. 

I always look forward to the Pawpaw Cook Off competition, where folks enter home-made concoctions in four different categories — Sauces/Condiments, Beverages, Savories, and Sweets/Desserts. In the past, creative chefs have submitted entries like pawpaw guacamole and a pawpaw colada beverage. I even remember a pawpaw pizza being entered one year. Best of all, when the judges have completed their tastings, the spectators get to sample the leftovers. 

Cooking with Pawpaws
This year, I decided to try some pawpaw cooking of my own in advance of the festival. But since it was summertime and pawpaws in Ohio weren’t ripe yet, I got some frozen pawpaw pulp available at Athens’ Integration Acres, which also sells products like pawpaw spiceberry jam and pawpaw fudge as well as pawpaw seeds and trees along with locally foraged crops like black walnuts and ramps. 

Integration Acres’ owner, Chris Chmiel, is well-known throughout the country as a pawpaw promoter and enthusiast. He’s both the creator and operator of the Ohio Pawpaw Festival, and in 2009 he successfully lobbied the Ohio state legislature to adopt pawpaws as the officially designated state native fruit. I met Chris and purchased pawpaw pulp at his booth at the Athens Farmers Market, but I also could have made the purchase online and had the pulp shipped to me. Of course, then I wouldn’t have gotten to spend the day in Athens — one of my favorite spots. Not knowing how much I’d need, I purchased two packages, which turned out to be plentiful. 

First, I made Pawpaw Panna Cotta, an Italian dessert that turned out to be surprisingly simple to make. I had enough of the pulp left to make a second dish, so I tackled Pawpaw Crème Brulée, which was a bit trickier to prepare. Somehow, I had beginner’s luck with the final product turning out perfectly and the pawpaw flavor shining through. 

Unbelievably, I still had about a cup of pulp remaining, so I tried my hand at making Pawpaw Chicken Salad. I just used plain old mayonnaise, mixing in some celery, grapes, scallions, and slivered almonds. The results were delish, if I do say so myself. 

Mushrooms Up Next
While I was at the Athens Farmers Market, I also stopped by a booth for Soulshine Earth Forest Farm, a purveyor of organic forest-farmed mushrooms, and a flyer for the upcoming Fall Fungi Festival caught my eye. Scheduled for Oct. 17–18 at Tenderfoot Learning Lab outside Athens, the festival is described as a “celebration of all things mycelial.” Activities include foraging and identification hikes with mushroom guides, mushroom dehydration and cooking demos, mushroom crafts, live music and overnight camping. I plan to attend. After all, who knows what culinary adventures I can have with the wild mushrooms I forage?

I’ve long had a soft spot for Athens. I’ve always admired the creative energy surrounding Ohio University and the people who chose not just to study in Athens, but also to stay. There’s an unmistakable personality to the place: artistic, independent, slightly bohemian and proudly unpolished in the best possible way.

That personality shows up in Athens County’s thrift, vintage and resale shops, too. What struck me while exploring Uptown Athens wasn’t simply the treasure hunting. It was how closely these stores reflect the community itself. Store owners talk about sustainability, local artists and keeping things affordable. Many of the businesses support causes larger than themselves, from foster children to regional artisans. Together, they create a secondhand culture that fits naturally into Athens County.

My first stop in Uptown Athens was Bleeding Heart Boutique, a colorful shop filled with vintage denim, patterned shirts, handmade jewelry and racks of clothing I immediately imagined my teenage daughter trying on. 

Owner Hannah Morgan, an Athens native and former fine-arts student, described the store as “mostly secondhand boutique more than thrift,” carefully sourcing and repairing pieces before putting them on the racks. “I love how small our community is,” Morgan told me. “We’re very supportive of one another and tight knit.”

Morgan also pointed to the natural beauty surrounding Athens. “Anywhere within five miles outside the bubble of Athens is beautiful countryside.” The store reflects that same creativity and care. Clothing mixes with ceramics, stickers, cards and handmade items from local artists and friends. Morgan gravitates toward bright colors, bold patterns and natural fabrics such as linen, silk and cotton over fast-fashion synthetics.

“It’s almost like you’re thrifting, but someone already went through the racks for you,” Morgan said with a laugh.

Athens Underground

A few blocks away, I descended the staircase into Athens Underground, a basement-level vintage shop packed with records, dresses, books, old signs and decades of nostalgia. Employee Maxwell Levitsky explained that many of the store’s items come through estate cleanouts, giving forgotten belongings a second life.

“We help people go through donations, things they want to keep and things we’re able to sell,” Levitsky said.

I spent a long time flipping through the vinyl bins before landing on two jazz albums, by Dizzy Gillespie and Charlie Parker. Levitsky explained the shop became known for jazz after acquiring thousands of records from a collector connected to New York’s music scene in the 1970s and ’80s.

“It’s cool to see albums in the condition they looked like when they first came out,” Levitsky said.

River of Time Boutique in Uptown Athens

Then there was River of Time Boutique and Gallery, an eclectic blend of boutique, vinyl shop and psychedelic rock gallery co-owned by Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen and Vanessa Kaukonen. I left with an upcycled shirt, an R.E.M. pin and an Herb Alpert & The Tijuana Brass album from Jorma’s personal collection.

Manager Stephanie Layton said the shop tries to create “something for everybody” while supporting artists, fair-trade makers and women-owned businesses. Once a month, the store also hosts free concerts when Kaukonen is in town.

Finally, I visited New-To-You Thrift Shoppe, a nonprofit thrift store operated by the Athens County Foster Parent Association. Racks of vintage dresses sold for less than $10 while proceeds helped foster families with clothing, toys, furniture and summer activities for children. 

By the end of the day, I realized I hadn’t just gone thrifting. I’d spent hours talking with people who care deeply about Athens and about each other. That may be what keeps people coming back.

Even after the college students leave for summer, Athens still has energy. Shop owners have time to chat. Parking spots open up. You can linger over coffee, browse through stacks of records or wander into a store with no agenda and still leave with something memorable. I came home with albums, a shirt and a pin. I also came home reminded why I always liked Athens in the first place.

Sounds of June

June is an especially vibrant month in Athens County. The big feature is the Nelsonville Music Festival, June 18-20, a three-day extravaganza featuring more than 40 acts across every genre imaginable. I have multiple friends who make it an annual pilgrimage, traveling down to Athens and camping out the whole weekend to catch as much music as they can. The Nelsonville Music Festival is really a great place to catch up-and-coming acts. Musicians like Tyler Childers and Brandi Carlisle have cut their teeth at the fest before making it big. Even Loretta Lynn once played here.

This year I’m especially excited for headliners like Gillian Welch and David Rawlins, the incomparable Mavis Staples and Columbus’ own Saintseneca. I’m also excited for Mon Rovia, who I saw years ago as an opening act (he played the Grand Ole Opry last year) and for Space Kid – I’ve known one of the band members, who is also an Ohio University student, since he was 10 years old!

Festival Central

That’s not the only festival game in town! From June 4-6 the fourth annual Starbrick Music Festival returns to Hocking College with a full roster of classic rock from the 70s, 80s and 90s. (Wait, are the 90s considered classic rock already?) This year they’re welcoming acts like the AC/DC tribute band Thunderstruck, the classic rock cover band Circa ’79 and the Renée Stewart Band with their mix of blues, Americana and grunge. 

On June 13, Boogie on the Bricks closes down a block of Court Street in Athens for a full day of live music, local artwork, food trucks and family activities. I foresee a Bahama Mama from the Schmidt’s Sausage truck paired with a set from Nick Tolford & Company in my future.

Any Excuse to Hang Out in Athens

And even beyond the summer months, Athens is hotspot for live music all year-long. I’ll make any excuse to detour there for huevos rancheros at Casa Nueva, the Mata Hari hot dog at O’Betty’s Red Hot or a plate of the good stuff at Miller’s Chicken. And if we get to hang out to catch a local band or two, maybe stop by Jackie O’s Brewery for pint – even better! Casa Nueva regularly hosts live music like bluegrass bands, open mics and even kid-friendly gigs. No visit to Athens is complete without a stop at Donkey Coffee. Its small front room hides the fact that they have multiple floors of study rooms and hangout space, including the back room where they host small concerts, poetry readings and other community events.

Of course, one of the biggest and most storied venues in Athens is The Union. It’s weathered so much over the years; I remember we had visited town a week before it was damaged by a fire in 2014. They host everything from acoustic to rock to bluegrass every week. And just like the Nelsonville Music Festival, it’s a place to see bands before they become famous. One of my favorite “recent” examples is indie-folk band Caamp, which played The Union regularly when lead singer Taylor Meier attended OU.

Athens really is an inspiring town. Meier and Caamp aren’t the only acts to come out of the area. I’m not the biggest metal-head, but I have friends who line up for every rock festival, and they’ve surely seen Skeletonwitch, which formed in Athens when Scott Hedrick and Nate Garnette were at OU. And who doesn’t love Red Wanting Blue? Their shows are always so high-energy. And did you know? Their frontman Scott Terry went to OU.

Speaking of big acts like Caamp, plenty of them have played the bigger venues in Athens County, like Templeton-Blackburn Memorial Auditorium on OU’s campus and Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville. The Memorial Auditorium is nearing 100 years old, and this year alone hosted the Indigo Girls, Aly & AJ and LUCIUS. In the summer months they feature the Under the Elms concert series with an orchestra performing outside the west portico of the building.

Stuart’s Opera House is another grand old theater that’s played host to decades of performances since the late 1870s. It’s really hard to beat the experience in such an historic venue, especially knowing how many famous acts have performed there over the years. I also love how, in addition to big touring shows, they host film screenings, open mic nights and free outdoor concerts in the summer.

Music really is alive in Athens! If you need any more excuses to hang around town, maybe it’s the opportunity to spot some famous faces who live in the area, like Rock and Roll Hall of Famer and Jefferson Airplane guitarist Jorma Kaukonen or bluegrass guitarist Clay Hess of the Clay Hess Band.

This scenic trail follows the Hocking River, passing through woodlands, wetlands, and the heart of the Ohio University campus. It’s an easygoing way to experience Athens County’s autumn charm—whether you’re out for exercise or simply a peaceful afternoon on two wheels.

3. Kayak at Strouds Run State Park
When the fall colors reflect off the calm waters of Dow Lake, there’s no better place to be than in a kayak. Rentals are available at the Boathouse at Strouds Run through October, where you can choose from kayaks, canoes, or stand-up paddleboards. Paddle across the lake surrounded by forested hillsides or pull up along the shore for a quiet picnic. It’s a serene way to take in the season’s beauty.

4. Visit Libby’s Pumpkin Patch
Nothing says fall like a trip to Libby’s Pumpkin Patch in Albany. This family-run farm is a local favorite, offering pumpkins of every size, hayrides, a corn maze, and homemade treats like pumpkin donuts and apple cider slushies. It’s a perfect stop for families, couples, and anyone looking to experience a slice of classic autumn fun. Open on Saturdays and Sundays throughout the month of October.

5. Browse the Athens Farmers Market
The Athens Farmers Market is a year-round staple, but fall is an especially vibrant time to visit. Local farmers showcase seasonal produce—apples, squash, pumpkins, and fresh baked goods—along with handmade crafts and live music. The market, held on Saturdays and Wednesdays, captures the community spirit of Athens County in every booth.

6. Explore Hocking Hills on a Rainy Day
Even when the weather turns gray, adventure isn’t off the table. Just a short drive west of Athens, Hocking Hills State Park becomes almost magical in the rain. Waterfalls flow stronger, sandstone cliffs glisten, and fog drifts through the forest. Grab your raincoat and hike to Ash Cave, Old Man’s Cave, or Cedar Falls for an unforgettable, moody autumn experience.

Athens County offers that experience in abundance. Historic Black communities, sacred Indigenous landmarks, cultural centers of significance, and sites important to labor history are scattered throughout our beautiful region. They are also why I fell in love with Athens County and made my home here. They are central to my work and artistic practice. The Berry Hotel*
18 North Court Street – Athens

Edward and Martha Jane Madrey Berry, a young Black couple, started a restaurant in 1880 that grew into a three-story hotel on Court Street by 1893. It hosted four U.S. Presidents and was widely regarded for its food and hospitality. The Berrys sold the business in 1921. It continued as a hotel until 1961, then sold to Ohio University before being demolished in 1974. While the hotel may be gone, you can still see it through the Invisible Ground app from my marker across the street.

Mount Zion Baptist Church*

Beginning as a congregation in 1872 and settling in this building in 1905, a thriving community of free-born and formerly enslaved Black Americans built the Mount Zion Baptist Church as a place of spiritual solace and social connection. It remained active as a church until the early 2000s. It is being preserved as the Mount Zion Black Cultural Center.

Stuart’s Opera House*

Stuart’s Opera House opened in 1879 at the start of Nelsonville’s boom as a coal town and became a cultural centerpiece of the region. It closed in 1924 and re-opened in 1997, with its acclaimed historic theater hosting music, theater, arts education, and much more.

Set in the middle of Athens, this cemetery showcases the incredible history of our region. Dating to 1806, it is home to important figures from the rich Black history of Athens, early pioneers, and countless veterans, including those from the American Revolution, the War of 1812, and the Civil War.

The Ridges*
100 Ridges Circle – Athens

Opening in 1874 as a groundbreaking facility for mental health, the Athens Asylum was designed by Levi Scofield and included beautiful open grounds. Today, it is home to the OHIO Museum Complex, the Voinovich School of Leadership & Public Service, and more.

Hartman Mound
Mound Street and Gary Drive – The Plains

The Hartman Mound is of the Adena culture and measures 40 feet tall and 140 feet in diameter. It is one of several earthworks located in and around The Plains, an important center for the Adena and known as Wolf’s Plains.

Invisible Ground is an Athens County-based multimedia project that engages people in the history of their communities. The Southeast Ohio History Center (SOHC) serves as Invisible Ground’s fiscal sponsor and collaborator on grants and charitable fundraising. SOHC works to collect, preserve, and share Southeast Ohio’s unique cultural and natural heritage. Grounded in a shared love for the rich history of Southeast Ohio, this partnership leverages artistic expression to make history come alive.

Invisible Ground and SOHC collaborate on a series of Immersive Historic Markers throughout southeast Ohio. Invisible Ground placed the first marker in April 2022 and now has twelve Immersive Historic Markers, with more coming in 2025 and beyond. Current locations include the Berry Hotel, Mount Zion Black Cultural Center and Baptist Church, the Soldiers and Sailors Monument, Athens County Courthouse, Athens Armory, and the Athens Asylum, all in Athens, Ohio, as well as Stuart’s Opera House in Nelsonville, the Bailey’s Trail System in Chauncey, the Albany Enterprise Academy in Albany, Tablertown, a historic Black settlement in eastern Athens County, and two markers in nearby Perry County in Rendville and Shawnee.

It’s that time of year when we say, “see ya’ later old man!” to winter as the hills come alive with wildlife, wildflowers, festivals and fun times. It’s that time of year when we embrace the new and welcome the return of the familiar.

Here are some new and some familiar seasonal attractions to include in your trip to Athens County this season…

Chilling beneath Cherry Blossoms

The blooming of Ohio University’s cherry blossom trees are a welcome sight every spring, when the tiny pinkish flowers reassure us that winter is finally letting go, and the beginning of a new season has arrived.

Bring a blanket and lunch to share with a friend beneath the trees where specks of light filter through the blooms. Or spend an afternoon simply walking amongst them and besides them on the paved bikeway which runs adjacent to the trees. Visitors can park at metered spaces near Peden Stadium and the Convocation Center on campus (or for free on weekends).

MTB at Baileys

Find your flow at Baileys Trail System, Ohio’s premier mountain bike destination. The 58 miles of trail here are relatively smoother and wider than traditional Ohio singletrack. Experienced riders will appreciate the optional rock features throughout the trail system and the advanced trails on the eastern half. Riding here is thrilling and fast, but can also be taken slow and steady — making it fun for both beginners and experts.

Baileys Trail System is closed to bikes each winter until a TBA date (usually in April), so check for their official trail opening announcement before coming to ride. Forest Floors Full of Flowers (say that 3 times fast)

Spring wildflowers at Strouds Run State Park are reason enough to pack up and hit the trails. 

Located outside of the city of Athens and within easy driving distance of Ohio University (about a 10-minute drive), Strouds Run State Park surrounds Dow Lake and draws a mix of trail and lake users. Miles of hiking, mountain biking, and horseback riding provide scenic views from rugged trails.

In the weeks of April and May the forest floor is an ever-changing world of discovery — multitudes of wildflowers, ferns, mushrooms, amphibians and reptiles will fascinate any lover of the outdoors. Conditions can sometimes be on the muddy side this time of year, so be sure to pack and wear the right kind of gear.

Some suggested trails where you can find wildflowers include: Beaver Pond, Finger Rock, Hickory, Indian Mound, Sundown, Thunderbunny and Blackhaw Trail (a paved accessible trail along Dow Lake).

Two Spring Flings: a Street Fair and a Film Fest

The International Street Fair, on Saturday, April 6, is always a highlight of the Ohio University International Week. Be sure to bear witness to the “Flag Parade” at 10:30 AM when dozens of international students carry their nation’s colors with pride down the brick streets in Uptown Athens. Walk amongst the gallery of flags on College Green, learn about other cultures from the various street vendors, eat some wonderful street fair fare, and dance to vibrant sounds from international-inspired musicians. 

From April 8-14, 2024, The Athens International Film + Video Festival (AIFVF) presents its 51st edition featuring over 215 films representing more than 50 countries in competition at the historic Athena Cinema in uptown Athens, OH. 14 feature length films and a variety of short films from across the globe will screen and compete in the annual festival with winners chosen by the independent jury, garnishing cash prizes and awards including Academy Qualifying status in select categories. This year’s festival features a world-class array of special events, film screenings, and after-parties.

Bluebells by Bike

Bike to the Athens Conservancy Bluebell Preserve along the Hockhocking Adena Bikeway, located at mile marker 12. The preserve showcases wild Virginia bluebells, blue-eyed Mary, and brilliant trilliums. The wildflowers peak around mid-April which may place you at the tail-end of the cherry blossom season. The preserve is perfectly situated for a bike ride, but can also be accessed from nearby parking.

While you’re at it, get some more miles in and enjoy the rest of the bikeway. It’s a pleasant pedal beside the Hocking River, railroads and lush green hills. For more information about the bikeway visit our bike-specific website: BIKEATHENSOHIO.COM.

Mushrooming at Burr Oak State Park

There’s something magical, primal perhaps, about finding food in the wild. And the hills of southeastern Ohio are home to some fabulous, flavorful finds. Wild mushroom risotto, anyone?

Chicken of the Woods, chanterelles and morels are just some of the wild edibles that you can forage in Ohio. Burr Oak State Park, located about a 30-minute drive north of Athens, Ohio, is one of the few Ohio state parks sanctioned for mushroom foraging. While they permit the hunting of mushrooms, special rules may apply, so contact the park office if you plan to visit. When collecting on state park land, collectors must remain on the trail. Off-trail collecting is prohibited.

Note about Ohio public lands: Visitors may hunt and collect mushrooms in Ohio’s state parks, state forests, and state wildlife areas. Gathering or collecting mushrooms in Ohio’s state nature preserves or natural areas is strictly prohibited.

WARNING: While many wild mushrooms are edible, a few are poisonous and can make you sick or even kill you. Don’t eat any mushroom, unless absolutely certain of its identification. Be sure you KNOW the identity of a mushroom, and that it is safe, before eating it. When in doubt, have any wild mushrooms checked by an expert before eating them. 

Waterfall Wonderland 

Located a 40-minute drive west of Athens, Ohio, the Hocking Hills State Park is a nationally and internationally acclaimed destination that you won’t want to skip. Here, you can hike beneath towering cliffs adorned with lush greenery, several waterfalls, and hemlock-shaded gorges. 

It is stunning in every season — with massive ice formations in winter, wildflowers adorning the forest floor in springtime and vivid foliage in the fall. Hikers and nature lovers will find plenty to appreciate in this awe-inspiring park. 

In springtime, waterfalls really steal the show. The abundance of seasonal rain means the falls are more impressive than ever. Rainy days are great days to experience the park. Not only are the waterfalls larger, but the park is typically less crowded, allowing you to appreciate the sights and sounds of water rushing through the gorges.

I missed seeing the movie during its original release. I heard so many rave reviews from friends that had seen it. I wanted to go, if only to simply cure my fomo. But life got busy and I delayed and delayed till it was no longer in theaters. 7 Academy Awards later, I knew I missed out on something extraordinary. My fomo was no longer just a fear, it was a reality.

In my defense, like most of the world, I have become accustomed to watching movies online. The conveniences of watching a movie at home are numerous: you pick your own showtime, you eat whatever you want, you can press pause. Heck! You don’t even have to wear pants! 

A few weeks back, I read that The Athena Cinema was hosting a film series called Heroes In Color that was to feature 5 movie screenings over the course of five weeks. “Everything Everywhere All at Once” was the third film. Here was my chance. No mo’ fomo!

So at 7:10 PM on Thursday, February 15, 2024 I walked into the theater lobby. The scent of buttered popcorn and the sight of the ticket counter brought back a flood of memories from my movie watching past. It felt comfortable, like reuniting with a lifelong friend.

As I settled into the plush seat, the anticipation of the big screen experience enveloped me. What I did not anticipate was the extra added value that the “Heroes In Color” organizers brought to the experience. There was movie trivia, an educational introduction, raffle prizes, a themed cocktail and the theater staples — popcorn and candy. The introduction, in particular, briefed the audience on the movie’s themes and representation of people of color. It was edifying and informative without being a spoiler for those, like myself, who had yet to see the film.

The Athena Cinema website describes the film series in this way: “The Heroes In Color mission is to synergize education and entertainment, creating a unique experience for our community. At the heart of the film series lies a commitment to celebrate voices and stories of people of color that have traditionally been marginalized within popular culture. By showcasing a kaleidoscope of cinematic heroes who reflect the spectrum of human stories, backgrounds, and aspirations, we strive to redefine heroism, proving that anyone, regardless of their origin, can rise to greatness.”

The event creators, Brandon Thompson and Dr. Gordon Briggs, are truly a dynamic duo. They have long been friends and always shared an enthusiasm for sci fi and action films. 

“Gordon (Briggs) and I talk about movies a lot, about their impact and how important they are. We’ve wanted to show certain movies in the theater for a while,” Thompson shared. “We thought it would be really cool to come hang out and just show people of color in a different light. Because a lot of these movies we see, they’re not presented in a strong way.”

“We had talked about black sci fi, black action, and we were like, ‘You know what? What if we just show heroes?’ And we always had this short list…’” explained Thompson.

The duo faced challenges organizing and acquiring the rights to show the films they wanted. They emerged victorious with a stellar selection of five films for the series: “Black Panther,” “Blade,” “Everything Everywhere All at Once,” “Spiderman: Across the Spider-verse” and “The Last Dragon.” The Heroes In Color film series was born.

“I get emotional, when I think about it, said Briggs. “These movies, (some) I have watched alone my entire life, and then suddenly Ican watch them with a group of people. We laugh together and jump together.”

There is something intrinsically unifying about watching a movie in a crowded theater. During “Everything Everywhere All at Once” I felt a part of something bigger. I laughed. I cried. My emotions felt amplified by those sitting in the theater with me. The affirmation of it all was something that I had missed these past years of quarantined movie watching at home. 

“It is a unique experience that we’re offering,” explained Briggs. “The biggest challenge is trying to convince people that this is more than just a commercial enterprise. It’s a communal enterprise.”

There are only two movies left to go, and I encourage you to join forces with your fellow movie lovers at this uniquely Athens’ experience celebrating “Heroes In Color.” I’ll see you there!

Passion Works Studios, a local favorite known for their eclectic art pieces, has created banners and other Bengals themed decorations for the Uptown Athens streets.

Athens County, Ohio has “Who Dey” fever!

When the Cincinnati Bengals won the AFC Championship game 27-24 against the Kansas City Chiefs, the realization sunk in. Athens County local, Joe Burrow and the Bengals are going to Super Bowl LVI! Since that moment, increasing amounts of orange, black and white are spreading throughout Uptown Athens, The Plains and pretty much all the cities and towns throughout the region.

Many local businesses are showing additional love for the Athens High School graduate by contributing to philanthropic efforts seeking to combat hunger in this region. These efforts were initially bolstered by Burrow’s heartfelt Heisman Trophy acceptance speech on December 14, 2019 which immediately compelled the masses to support efforts fighting hunger in Southeast Ohio. The 4-course meal is paired with two glasses of bubbly champagne with the star entree being a chicken caprese pasta. Consider setting goals and anticipating what’s to come in the next year in your relationship as well!

Every climber needs a spotter. The climbing gym is a great way to strengthen trust and communication skills in a relationship. Despite passes being valid all day, you and your significant other may find yourselves with an appetite after an hour or two. Originating from a Parks and Rec episode, Galentine’s is observed the day before Valentine’s Day as a way to celebrate friendship. With Valentine’s Day falling on the cusp of the weekend, Saturday is a perfectly acceptable day to observe Galentine’s. What’s the ideal way to celebrate in Athens, you ask? Let’s break it down.

First, brunch. Located on Court Street, Hangover Easy is a delicious way to start a late Sunday morning with friends. All of February, the diner is serving up festive red velvet pancakes with a rich cream cheese filling. If you’re in the mood for savory, you can’t go wrong with the “Hoe Benny” eggs benedict with crispy “Hoe Fries” (home fries). Make sure to order a round of mimosas to toast to another year of friendship!

Second, shop. After your meal with the gals and pals, head over to Arts West for the Valentine’s Prints, Plants, and Pots Sale. This sale does not disappoint with a variety of plants, print work, beautiful ceramics, and handmade jewelry. Spend the afternoon with the BFFs browsing locally made pieces that will make a perfect gift for that special someone.

Third, show. On February 12th, the Southeastern Ohio Rainbow Alliance presents the Lovers Masquerade and Drag Show from 6-11 PM at Eclipse Company Store with Mistique and Lady Dior. This event will give you a reason to go all-out in formal attire and an elegant masquerade mask. Delicious Eclipse appetizers will be provided by SEORA while enjoying the evening.

On Saturday, consider stopping by the Athens Farmers Market on East State Street. The market is open 9-12 and has a variety of vendors ranging from fresh vegetables to locally raised meats. (If you’re planning to prepare any foods, make sure to book a stay with appropriate kitchen tools.)

Some delicious ready-to-eat options are Laurel Valley Creamery’s “Aphrocheesiac” heart-shaped Cloverton cheese, Shagbark’s blackbean tortilla chips, and a variety pack of macarons from UnBEALievable Desserts. This can be a couple’s trip or done solo to surprise them later!

As a part of the romantic evening, treat your significant other to a tasting at a local winery. Make sure to try the new Strawberry Dreams wine at Dutch Creek Winery along with some of their assorted chocolates. Shade Winery is another great option. Order a glass of their 2017 Estate Grown Cabernet Sauvignon or their Sauvignon Blanc if you enjoy a fruitier wine. The best part of including this tasting in your evening itinerary? Your date can pick out a wine for your picnic!

Now, you may be wondering where you might picnic in February. Instead of heading to the park, a local lodging spot is the perfect way to enjoy your spread during the chilly weather. Bring a tablecloth and picnic basket with all the fixin’s, and if you really want to set the mood, some (fake) candles and fresh flowers. Enjoy the evening wining and dining with your sweetheart.
