CGDS Team Trained to Train Men on Non-Violence

The CGDS team received a training of trainers (ToT) workshop, equipping us with the tools to support men to find alternatives to violence. Mr. Marcus Armstrong, who has years of experience working with male perpetrators of domestic violence in the UK, facilitated the training which lasted for seven days over two weeks. The training provided the space to discuss and reflect on gender-based violence, focusing on finding alternate behaviors in response to anger. Additionally, the team had the opportunity to develop skills and receive materials they could utilize to deliver the training to different groups. The ToT and the forthcomingactivities are part of the Gender, Justice and Security Hub, supported by the UK Research and Innovation's Global Challenges Research Fund, in collaboration with London School of Economics and Political Science.

CGDS Hosts a Series of Activities

The Center for Gender and Development Studies at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani, hosts a series of activities under the name "Gender and..." Each month a different topic relating to gender is discussed.

A primary objective of this activity is to promote creative ideas and provide support for existing projects that serve to advance gender equality and women's empowerment.

Gender & Artistic Expression was the second topic of the month. CGDS was thrilled to host three contemporary Kurdish women, Avan Sdiq, Rozhgar Mustafa, and Niga Salam, to share their artistic perspectives on gender in relation to their artistic expression who also participated and showed their art projects in a show under the name of 52 artists.

Gender & Art was the first topic on which CGDS hosted Ms. Rooz Mohammed to share her experience as an artist and talk about her project which is a comic book under the name of “Between Two Rivers”.

US Consul General Meets with CGDS

On November 7, 2022, the US Consul General, Mr. Irvin Hicks, along with Mr. Joshua Lewis, the political affairs officer, and Ms. Zuleikha Saadi, Iraqi Cultural Advisor, visited the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani and met with the CGDS team. The Director of CGDS, Dr. Choman Hardi, provided an overview of the organization's history, as well as a summary of current activities and future plans. There was an exchange of information and discussion regarding possible future collaborations, as well as updates regarding various projects. During the meeting, the importance of international cooperation and visible support was also discussed. CGDS team members Dr. Twana Abdulrahman, Research Fellow, Ms. Savan Abdulrahman, Research Assistant, and Ms. Shanya Mohammed, Project Officer, were also present.

CGDS Participates in UNFPA’s Male Engagement Workshop

On November 1-2, 2022, Dr. Choman Hardi, Director of CGDS, and Dr. Twana Hassan, CGDS research fellow, participated in a UNFPA workshop titled Capacity Building on Engaging Men and Boys for Gender Equality. The workshop was held in Erbil. Its purpose was to promote positive masculinity through working with individual men and the larger community, as well as bringing about systems change. Dr. Choman and Dr. Twana contributed to the discussions about masculinity, harmful social norms, the structure of power, and our plans for the promotion of non-violent masculinities in Kurdistan-Iraq. CGDS’s Masculinity project is part of the Gender, Justice and Security Hub, funded by the UK Research and Innovation’s Global Challenges Research Fund.

CGDS Facilitates a Series of Poetry Workshops for Men

In late August and early September 2022, the Center for Gender and Development Studies conducted three poetry writing workshops as part of its Masculinity, Violence, and Prevention project. CGDS Director, Dr. Choman Hardi, led the workshops at the American University of Iraq, Sulaimani (AUIS) and University of Halabja (UOH). The workshops included a discussion of writing by Iraqi and Kurdish poets followed by writing prompt to explore, understand, question, and challenge the concept of masculinity in the region. The workshop participants included professional and aspiring male writers who are willing to express themselves through poetry. Similar workshops will be conducted in Chwarqurna, Kalar and Chamchamal. These activities are part of the Gender, Justice and Security Hub, supported by the UK Research and Innovation's Global Challenges Research Fund, in collaboration with London School of Economics and Political Science.

CGDS Starts Collaboration with Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs

On Thursday, August 25, 2022, the Center for Gender and Development Studies conducted its first focus group discussion in collaboration with the Ministry of Labour and Social Affairs (MOLSA) in Erbil. Dr. Choman Hardi, CGDS Director, and Dr. Twana Abdwlrahman, CGDS research fellow, facilitated the discussion. This was the first of two consultations meetings which aim to collect information about the challenges and training needs of MOLSA staff and departments, in order to develop appropriate training modules and other tools to build the capacity of employees at the ministry’s institutions. The next discussion will be held in Sulaimani. Participants included employees of various educational institutions that support people with disabilities, the juvenile and women’s reformatory centers, and the MOLSA’s gender unit. This is one of the outputs of CGDS’s Masculinity, Violence, and Prevention project which is part of the Gender, Justice and Security Hub, funded by the UK Research and Innovation.

British Consul General Visits CGDS

On Tuesday, July 26, 2022, the British Consul General David Hunt and his team visited CGDS. Representing CGDS were CGDS Director Dr. Choman Hardi; Dr. Lynn Rose, CGDS Director of Disability Studies; and Dr. Twana A. Hassan, CGDS Research Fellow. Ms. Shanya Mohammed, CGDS Project Officer was also present. The teams updated each pother on various projects, and discussed the importance of international cooperation and visible support.

UNFPA Country Representative Visits CGDS

On May 3 2021, Dr. Rita Columbia, the UNFPA Country Representative for Iraq, met with President Bruce Ferguson, CGDS Director Dr. Choman Hardi, Deputy Director Dr. Lynn Rose, and UNFPA Project Manager Dr. Hawar Ameen. Dr. Columbia, an expert in public health and sexual and reproductive health, took up her position as UNFPA Country Representative in July 2020. Since fall 2020, CGDS has been an implementing partner with UNFPA for a five-year project that focuses on gender-based violence and women’s equity. Also present at the meeting were Ms. Azhee Amin, UNFPA Program Analyst, Ms. Naz Ahmed, UNFPA Humanitarian Associate, and Ms. Salwa Moussa, UNFPA Communications Specialist. We talked about the work that CGDS has completed, implementing research effectively , and possible future collaboration between UNFPA and CGDS.
