While catching up with estranged siblings and trying to overcome their personal demons, they're also attempting to prevent the end of the world.....YA KNOW - LIKE YA DO. Whether you care about DC films or not, the GOOD NEWS is that Jason Momoa is the star of this one! Beauty and the Bitch are exploring our very low expectatons for this film, how the character of Aquaman stacks up against other superheroes, questionable casting choices, how this is tied into the Entourage franchise and more.

We haven't loved recent DC adventures (except for you, Wonder Woman! Two for YOU, Wonder Woman!)....but we're willing to give them a few more tries. Like we said, the bar is low, and so is our guard, because we are joined by our favorite guest -WINE!

She is torn between worlds and faces a series of gut-wrenching decisions after she witnesses the the murder of one of her oldest friends by a police officer. This story focuses on the issues at the heart of the Black Lives Matter movement and on the importance of standing up and speaking out. Extremely powerful!

065: The House with a Clock in its Walls

Beauty and the Bitch is bringing nostalgia back (YEP) and talking all things The House with a Clock in Its Walls. This 1973 juvenile mystery fiction novel written by John Bellairs and illustrated by Edward Gorey is the first in a series of twelve novels featuring the fictional American boy Lewis Barnavelt.

Mic was a big fan as a young person and there will likely be many more fans of the upcoming movie adaptation that is set to release on September 21st, 2018.

Whether you love YA, mysteries, half-dead sorcerers, awkward children, a little bit of fantasy, rudeness, games OR everything in between: this is an episode for you!

064: I'll Be Gone in the Dark

Beauty and the Bitch GOES THERE (like Degrassi); this week we are taking on true crime and one CRAZY case in particular.

The Golden State Killer was arrested for his crime spree (circa 70's-80's) just this year, thanks to advanced DNA technology. Michelle McNamara unfortunately didn't live to witness justice. She passed away in 2017, but her book I'll Be Gone in the Dark: One Woman's Obsessive Search for the Golden State Killer was published posthumously. Her desire to help get this case solved and bring an end to the living terror still felt by the GSK's victims was inspiring. She is a wordsmith like no other, as well as an amazing journalist and investigator.

Naturally we've got (some of) the facts, the jokes (yes, we even joke about this), the recommendations, and everything else ya need!

This week Beauty and the Bitch are diving into Neil Gaiman's CLASSIC "Neverwhere." Originally adapted as a BBC II Mini-series, Gaiman quickly saw the need to re-write and adapt as a novel alongside the show. (TIPS: The novel is way better).

Mic and Morgan discuss a shared love of Gaiman (and Gay-men), while disecting Neverwhere and who should check it out (EVERYONE REALLY).

PLUGS:

Mic just saw Room (he's late, okay) and thinks EVERYONE SHOULD SEE IT. It's beautiful, sad, inspiring, and makes you value your life and relationships. He gives this his only 10/10 on his summer watch list!

This week Beauty and the Bitch are diving into Diana Gabaldon's Outlander! Oooh sexxxy! Starz has popularized this fantasy/romance/period drama and season 4 starts VERY SHORTLY.

Morgan is a big fan and is currently plowing through Book 4 in preparation for Season 4. Mic thinks it all sounds slightly ridiculous, but agrees that Sam Heughan (Jamie Fraser) is a god among men (SPOILERS: we talk about this fact. A. Lot).

So, if you're into time travelling, fantasy, period pieces, messy families, comedy and romance and more, you should check it out! It's less about romance as time goes on, so if that's holding you back DON'T LET IT.

We have so many emotions about the first time we read this book (Mic has only read it once because he doesn't like for things to end). This week Beauty and the Bitch are joined by their most popular guest: a bottle of wine! Okay, but really, we record on Wednesday and it just *happens* to be hump day.

This week we are HYPED to discuss one of our all-time favorite fantasy books, Patrick Rothfuss's The Name of the Wind. Rothfuss is one of the most popular fantasy authors writing today (alongside Brandon Sanderson & George R.R. Martin) and we are waiting (impatiently) for the conclusion of his trilogy!

We dive into the story arc, character archetypes, feminism (or lack thereof), our fave plot lines/characters, whats going on in the world of Rothfuss and SO MUCH MORE.

Initially a graphic novel created by Garth Ennis and Steve Dillon, Preacher has been brought to life on AMC by Seth Rogen and Evan Goldberg (and company). Now, we think this is an...interesting choice for AMC...and we have a lot of feelings.

Meander along with us as Morgan speaks unintelligently and Mic imparts (frequently and at length) nuggets of his vast comic book knowledge. Just kidding, they both read the Wikipedia page.

We explore the vast filmography of Rogen & Goldberg, discuss pitfalls in casting and find various other things to bitch about (cuz, lets be real).

Just kidding, The Handmaid's Tale was NOT a memoir, but has the horrifying potential to become such. We love that this book covers topics pertinent to today's society and acts as a reminder of what could be if we let hatred win. The story has been adapted for the screen by HULU and sesason two is just around the corner!

Neil Gaiman is a master of words and we love and respect his every move here at Beauty and the Bitch. That being said, we did of course make room to TEAR THIS HOUSE TO THE GROUND.

American Gods is (in our opinion) one of the best books (EVER) and a Gaiman classic. It has been turned into a STARZ adaptation and is set to launch Season Two in April 2018. HOWEVER, there is too much drama not to discuss! Gaiman is right in the middle; people are leaving; show runners are changing; story lines are up in the air; WE ARE HAVING FEELINGS.

Additionally, we have the Scoop on all the other Gaiman projects in the works. Basically we're a gay man on Gaiman and a woman with feelings about John Hamm in his powder blue suit.

040: Ready Player One

Austin, Texas' very own Ernest Cline has given us a sweeping sci-fi/fantasy epic made for every kid from the 80's who LOVES nostalgia (and video games, and movies, and books, and style AND DRAMA). "Ready Player One" was one of Morgan's favorite reads of last year (though it came out several years ago), and is definitely for most any Sci-Fi/Fantasy Lover!

It hits all of *our* buttons, so we're a little biased here, but WE LOVE IT. And, to commemorate our love for the book, we have brought another superfan onboard (Allison Jackson!) to talk about all the great things and speculate about how horrible we think the movie will be (spoiler: we're not too sure about it).

Beauty and the Bitch are taking on part three of Peter Jackson's "The Hobbit" series. Will they be more bitchy than before? Will "The Hobbit" movies continue to be unneccarily long? What happened to Smaug? Can we hold our own attention? If anyone can do it, Beauty and the Bitch can!

We continue on our path of jokes at the expense of Benedict Cumberswizzle, we mourn Smaug, we salute Martin Freeman (and his Bilbo), and we complain about everything. We also continue to confront the controversial love story of Tauriel and Fili: where do you stand on this invented melodrama?

Not to be missed is (OF COURSE) the shade we are serving on a silver platter....and now I'm hungry. What's for second breakfast???

038: Annihilation

Beauty and the Bitch has taken a step into the wild, deep darkness of Jeff van der Meer's Southern Reach Trilogy. This interesting, and twisted trilogy has received the Hollywood treatment with *amazing* director Alex Garland (Ex Machina), who co-wrote and directed Annihilation.

Naturally, we have feelings about how the adaptation has shaped up (and changed in a number of drastic ways) and what we think that might mean. Revel in our feelings, effortlessly thrown shade and shared love for Alex Garland, sci-fi (in general) and drama. PLUS: miscellaneous ramblings (obviously our forte).

Be sure to catch Annihilation while it's still in U.S. theaters and watch it on Netflix soon if you are international!

037: A Wrinkle in Time

Listen,

what follows is the truth. MADELINE L'ENGLE IS A MAGICAL UNICORN GENIUS AHEAD OF HER TIME, INSPIRING YOUNG PEOPLE TO DREAM BIG, AND OH YEAH REMEMBER WE ARE INFINITESIMAL IN THE UNIVERSE SO EMBRACE BIG IDEAS.

Glad we got that out of the way. So. On today's episode we are covering "A Wrinkle in Time," which is getting the Reese Witherspoon treatment on the forthcoming adaptation. Witherspoon has made strides in Hollywood to became the go-to gal for book to screen adaptations. She has a new production company (Hello Sunshine) & a mission to empower women by telling stories for, by & about them. #Feminism. So, needless to say, we're here for it.

A Wrinkle in Time is one of her many accomplishments where she is helping break down barriers for women & people of color. One of our favorite aspects of the AWM movie adaptation is the inclusion of POC and the normalizing of interracial relationships. I mean, IT'S 2018 Y'ALL. This shit is F.I.N.E. So, thanks for relaying that message to kiddos.

We're also talking all things book- of course! We were big fans as kids, and Morgan can't wait to share it with her future children! A delightful tale guiding kids towards the light, in a world that can often be dark and damp.

In addition to our book & movie talks, we've got some mad shade to throw at the Youtubers & crazy's that have some hate to give in regards to this story. (We're coming for you).

#Spoilers for previous seasons; #NoSpoilers for current season!

Are you a fan of AMC's "The Walking Dead?" Do you devour the Robert Kirkman graphic novels? Are you hungry for zombie dramas? Does your brain....er, crave entertainment? Then you're in the right place! At Beauty and the Bitch, we LOVE "The Walking Dead". Like. We love it. Mic even likes Carl (who, admittedly, has even grown on me!).

However, as a fan of "The Walking Dead", you have to endure a lot of shit. And cliff hangers. And character deaths. And plot twists. And logical fallacies. And a whole lot more, BUT....we think it's still worth it!

We are coming up on a pivotal return, after a midseason finale that has left everything uncertain. 030: The Hobbit Pt. 1

BB's: Bear with us on this UNNECCESARY THREE PART ENDEAVOR TO COVER THE HOBBIT. That's right, we're looking at you Peter Jackson. After his magicial wonderland that was The Lord of the Rings, ole Pete decided that he wanted to take the 95,456 words of The Hobbit and pair them with a little bit of nonsense, made up things/characters, and bits from The Lost Tales + The Silmarillion - and turn it into a trilogy!

We can not tell you why. What we can tell you, is that we have SO MANY FEELINGS ABOUT IT. Some good, some bad, some neutral, and....some non-sequeters (obvi). Check in with us, and let us know how you feel about these film adaptations too/the legend that is JRR Tolkien's The Hobbit.
