Habitat for Humanity and Base31 are joining forces to create more affordable housing for Prince Edward County. Base 31 will provide a block of townhouse lots as part of the Hilltop Village residential development. Base 31 will also handle exterior construction while Prince Edward-Hastings Habitat for Humanity will complete the interiors. Homeowners will be selected by Habitat for Humanity through its homeownership program. Base 31 Partner Alexandra De Gasperis said the agreement was the first step in what Base31 hopes will be an ongoing partnership that will grow overtime while Prince Edward-Hastings Habitat for Humanity CEO Hazzem Koudsi said the project will create opportunities for local families to stay in the community they are already part of. Construction on Hilltop Village is schedule to begin in October but no timing is available yet for the Affordable Townhouse units.

H. J. McFarland memorial Home has announced a facility wide respiratory illness outbreak. Masks are mandatory for all staff and visitors until further notice and visitors are asked to check with a staff member when visiting the home in case extra precautions are necessary and anyone with respiratory symptoms should avoid visiting during the outbreak.

If you use the Belleville transit system you need to be aware of some route changes that took effect today. Line 3 no longer service Loyalist College but will stop at the VIA rail station while route 6 will no longer stop at the train station. There are also changes to the routes for lines 3, 4, 6 and 8. Transit authorities say the changes will provide some additional stops and improve service for several areas.

Belleville police were busy over the long weekend responding to over 400 calls. Along with a couple of impaired driving arrests, police apprehended two individuals for violating probation orders and arrested one man on an outstanding assault warrant. In the most serious incident, a 26 year old Belleville man was arrested for assaulting his mother. According to police, officers were called to an east end residence on Sunday where a verbal dispute had escalated into a physical altercation. In addition to allegedly assaulting his mother the accused apparently damaged her property including smashing her cellphone. The man has been released from custody pending a court date in December.

In the first full day of Canada’s retaliatory tariffs on US good, US Trade Representative Jamieson Greer and US-Canada Trade Minister Dominic LeBlanc will talk today but there is no indication that negotiations will resume. US President Donald Trump and US trade representatives have threatened additional tariffs while Canadian officials say there will be dollar for dollar response to any US action. Meanwhile, Prime Minister Mark Carney said that there will be a cost to a shift away from the US as a primary trade partner but the alternative would be worse and US trade terms were unacceptable.

And in a surprising revelation on the international front, United Arab Emirates President Mohammed bin Zayed allegedly warned Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu that Hamas was planning something big ten days before the October 7th, 2023 attack. Bin Zayed was apparently rebuffed by Netanyahu who claimed the risk was from the West Bank not Gaza. Netanyahu’s government has denied the report but is resisting calls for an official investigation into the events preceding the attack which led to the war in Gaza. Israel is in the midst of an election campaign and opposition politicians jumped on the report as evidence of government bungling.

Sports

In local sports, five recent Prince Edward Collegiate Institute grads are moving on to post secondary Rubgy this fall bringing the total number of former PECI Panthers playing at the college or university level to 10. PECI rugby alumni will be playing for McMaster and Bishop’s Universities as well as St. Lawrence and Loyalist Colleges. And this year’s sports programs at PECI are just getting underway with tryouts for both individual and team sports this week and next. County FM will have a weekly update on PECI Panthers sports every Tuesday on the 4 and 6 pm news.

The Blue Jays are on the road tonight. They play the second game of a three game series with the Athletics. The Jays will be looking to get back into the win column as they continue to chase the Cleveland Guardians for the final wildcard spot. Toronto is just one game back of the Guardians. The Jays and Athletics get underway in Sacramento at 9:40 pm.

And Jonathan Goldbloom announced that he is stepping down as the chair of the Hockey Canada board of directors. Goldbloom joined the transitional board that was created in 2022 following the men’s junior hockey team sexual assault scandal. Goldbloom has chaired the organization for three years and his resignation will be effective October 5th.

Good afternoon. From the heart of Prince Edward County, I’m Will Pearson with your County FM News. 

Our Brenda Little has more on the proposal for the intersection of County Road 1 and Highway 62.

Representatives from the Ministry of Transport were on hand yesterday to share information about the roundabout to be constructed at the intersection of County Road 1 and Hwy 62. Several design boards were set up at the Wellington Community Centre to demonstrate the plan for a single lane roundabout. Construction is expected to start early May of 2027 with completion by November, 2027. Landscaping will be included but if remedial work is necessary, that will take place spring, 2028. The proposed design and construction report will be published late fall followed by a 30-day period for public comments and then tendering will happen. The roundabout discussion began in 2020 with municipal officials collaborating with the MP and MPP at that time and following that approval, pieces of land were expropriated by the MTO to go forward with a plan.

The Bank of Canada made its sixth interest rate decision of the year this morning, and held its key interest rate at 2.25%. Most economists and financial markets favoured another rate hold from the central bank. The Bank of Canada has held its policy rate steady since late last year as the economy copes with U.S. tariff uncertainty and higher global energy prices from the war in Iran. Annual inflation rose to three per cent in July but the consumer price index has been volatile since the Middle East conflict sent gas prices soaring over the spring. The next rate announcement is scheduled for Oct. 28.

In housing news: Nearly half of Canadian home-owners report that their housing payment eats up at least 50 per cent of their household budget. In a recent survey by Leger of more than 1,500 Canadians, four in five homeowners also reported facing a rate increase during their renewal process, with most reporting an increase of between two and five per cent. Over the next 12 months, the last wave of pandemic-era 5-year fixed mortgages comes up for renewal, about twelve per cent of all outstanding mortgages in Canada. According to the Bank of Canada’s Households Financial Stability report, these home-owners should expect housing payments to increase by 15 per cent, on average. Given that Canadian home prices have fallen about five per cent over the past year and twenty per cent since their 2022 peak, homeowners will have significantly less equity to draw on for refinancing. As a result, Bank of Canada data suggests that about four per cent of borrowers renewing in 2027 might not qualify for a new mortgage at all. These numbers could grow from four to seven per cent of mortgage holders across Canada if housing prices fall another 10 per cent.

Finally, poverty rates in Ontario are up sharply and have been climbing more rapidly than the average rate in Canada. That most recent analysis from the Canadian Income Survey focuses on the period from 2020 to 2024. At particular risk are unattached individuals between 18 and 64, children in woman-led lone-parent families, racialized communities, and those with disabilities. The analysis shows that Ontario’s 2020-2025 Poverty Reduction Strategy has failed to reduce poverty. 

Sports

In MLB last night, the Toronto Blue Jays started a nine-game road trip. In the opener of an important three-game series against the Cleveland Guardians, the Jays lost 6 – 1. They play again tonight and tomorrow afternoon. The Jays are still in last place in the AL East, three games below .500. And they’re now two and a half games behind Cleveland for the last wild card spot, with the Baltimore Orioles and Texas Rangers also ahead of them. The Jays have to win the series with Cleveland in order to close the gap.  

In tennis, at the U.S. Open, Denis Shapovalov of Richmond Hill, Leylah Fernandez of Laval, Que., and fellow Canadian Felix Auger-Aliassime will all play second-round singles matches today.

In soccer news, CanMNT striker Jonathan David is joining Spain’s Atlético Madrid from Italian club Juventus on loan for one season, a deal that went down before the European men’s transfer window expired yesterday.

Finally, the Wellington Dukes start their regular season this Friday night, hosting the Lindsay Muskies. Like the Dukes, the Muskies were eliminated in four games in the first round of last season’s playoffs.

A 47 year old Bloomfield resident is facing an assault charge following an altercation with a parking enforcement officer in Picton last Thursday. Prince Edward County OPP were alerted to a disturbance in a downtown parking lot after the parking enforcement officer issued the other individual with an infraction notice. The accused was arrested and charged before being released pending a court date. Police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who might have additional information to contact the Prince Edward County OPP or crimestoppers.

In another incident, Prince Edward County OPP stopped a driver for speeding on Highway 62 last Friday night and discovered the man was impaired. In addition to exceeding the speed limit by more than 40 kph, police have charged a 30 year old Picton man with failure to comply with a demand. The accused was released from custody and will appear in court in October.

Prince Edward County municipal staff are reminding everyone to check their voter registration ahead of municipal elections October 26th. If you are on the list you should receive notification by mail. If you aren’t, there are several ways to add your name. You can do it online, by email or in person at Shire Hall, any County Library branch or at a voting location on October 17th, the advance voting day.

Quinte Health’s Crisis Intervention Centre has a new name. Going forward it will be known as the Mental Health and Crisis Services Centre. The change was made to better reflect the range of services offered by the Centre. The Mental Health and Crisis Services are located in Belleville General Hospital and provide free mental health support to anyone in the Quinte region over 16 years of age. No referral is necessary and patients can access help by phone, in person on a walk-in basis at the Belleville hospital or through outreach appointments at Prince Edward County Memorial Hospital. The centre also provides 24/7 telephone crisis support and is connected to the nationwide 988 suicide crisis hotline.

In international news, the United States struck targets in Iran today after two Saudi tankers were hit with projectiles thought to have come from Iran. Escalating conflict and a lack of progress on implementing the deal previously agreed to by the two sides have raised fears of further disruptions to petroleum exports from the region. Both sides are threatening further retaliation while the US is proposing to increase sanctions on the Iranian economy. Qatar and Oman have attempted to broker a deal to reopen the Straits of Hormuz but their efforts have so far been unsuccessful.

And you can’t blame this one on Donald Trump but an American company is involved. Canadian notebook company Hilroy issued notebooks with a new cover design ahead of this year’s school year. The cover includes the map of Canada previously on notebook covers but somehow Newfoundland and Cape Breton Island have disappeared. The company is blaming the mistake on a printing error but there is no explanation so far of how the notebooks reached consumers before anyone noticed. Hilroy is owned by American stationary company ACCO brands.

Sports

In major league baseball action, Toronto starts a critical series with the Cleveland Guardians tonight. Cleveland holds down the final wildcard spot with Toronto, Baltimore and Texas hot on their heals. The Jays will send Spencer Arrighetti to the mound against Gavin Williams for the Guardians. First pitch goes out at 6:40 in Cleveland.

In soccer news, Canadian Defensive Midfielder Niko Sigur will reportedly leave Croatia’s Hadjuk Split and join fellow Canadian Jason Russell-Rowe playing for the French Ligue 1 Toulouse FC team. Today is the final day for European Football Club transfers in a year which saw several Team Canada players leverage their World Cup appearances to advance their European careers.

And former Dallas Cowboys quarterback and CBS announcer Tony Romo was convicted of driving under the influence of alcohol today. Romo pleaded no contest saying that he has taught his three sons to accept the consequences of their actions and will do the same himself. Romo’s licence was suspended and ignition interlocks were ordered on any vehicles owned by the former player. CBS said Romo is currently on leave while the network assesses his future.

Good afternoon. From the heart of Prince Edward County, I’m Will Pearson with your County FM News. 

Last night, County Council addressed the use of Delhi Park. Brenda Little has more. 

It was a busy agenda for the council meeting last night and the chamber was packed with people interested in the meeting. A big-ticket item was pickleball in Delhi park. There were deputations and audience participants supporting the plan for six courts to be constructed in Delhi park but there were also deputations and audience comments opposed to the plan supporting the natural conservation of the area. Council deemed the plan as a project of community interest several years ago and the Prince Edward Pickleball group has been fundraising since then and now has $166,000 to contribute to the project. Lisa Lindsay stated courts could be constructed and in use in 2027 if funding from grants comes through. Councillor Neiman made a motion to bring all stakeholders together for a meeting to ensure everyone has all the correct information and with an amendment, it was carried.

Another hot topic at Council last night was the Drake Devonshire Inn expansion. The hotel is building an addition and asking council to approve a heritage permit. It is complicated and there was great discussion to clarify details regarding the Ontario Heritage Act, the role of the heritage committee, and time lines. In the end, council approved an amended motion which would allow additional windows on the north side of the building.

Council had good news for Wellington last night. Sarah Bobas and Christine Ziedler of the Wellington Town Hall Stewardship Association made a deputation, saying they have completed the necessary requirements of the Memorandum of Understanding from January of this year regarding the town hall project. They are now ready to assume stewardship responsibilities, and are keen to get started. When the sales agreement goes through, they will return to council for the transfer. Mayor Ferguson noted that this may be a way forward for other municipal properties in the county.

The County is looking for public input on its master plan for fire and emergency services, as well its other services. Community members, and even visitors, can comment through a short, anonymous, online survey, or in-person at Shire Hall, the Picton Fire Station on McDonald Drive, or County library branches.

A final reminder: The County wants to recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to the County’s heritage. Nominations for the County Heritage Awards are open now until August 31st at 4:30 pm. Download the nomination form and send it to the County clerk’s office, or pick up a paper copy at Shire Hall. The award recipients will be announced next February.

A 35-year-old from Montreal is facing a criminal charge of mischief under $5,000 after spray painting graffiti on a commercial building in Picton early this morning. The suspect was arrested without incident, transported to the County OPP detachment, and then released from custody. The accused is scheduled to appear before the Ontario Court of Justice in Picton on November 4.

And, finally, a reminder from the local OPP: motorized scooters are prohibited on public sidewalks, streets, and highways in the County. The governing by-law defines a motorized scooter as a two-wheeled skateboard driven by motor power.

Sports

In MLB last night, the Toronto Blue Jays started the last stretch of the season, with all games against teams with records currently no higher than .500. In the opener of a three-game series against the Kansas City Royals, the Jays lost 5 – 3. They play again tonight and tomorrow night. The Jays have won seven of their last eight series, but they have fallen back into last place in the AL East, five games below .500, and are now tied with the Seattle Mariners and the Minnesota Twins, three games out of the last wild card spot. 

In the WNBA tonight, the Toronto Tempo visit the Seattle Storm, who have been eliminated from playoff contention. Toronto still sits in sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, but they have lost nine of their last 10 games, and have also been eliminated from playoff contention. 

In tennis, Montreal’s Félix Auger-Aliassime and Alexandra Eala of the Philippines lost yesterday in first-round mixed doubles action at the U.S. Open. Auger-Aliassime was the last Canadian in the tournament.

Finally, at the Little League Baseball World Series: with their win last night, Canada is one of four international teams left standing. The team from Vancouver plays Japan tonight. The loser goes home; the winner moves on to the championship for the international group and a chance at the World Series.

More than 7 thousand Prince Edward County homes were hit by a power outage shortly before noon today. According to sources at Ontario Hydro, the outage was caused by a temporary interruption in the supply of electricity. The cause of the interruption is still under investigation but power was restored to most customers by 1 pm.

Drivers will want to avoid the eastbound 401 near Kingston this evening. All lanes will be closed between County Road 8 in Odessa and highway 38 starting at 9 tonight to allow crews to remove a tractor trailer that was involved in a collision. The highway is expected to reopen by 5 am Wednesday.

Belleville Police Service are looking for the public’s assistance in locating a 51-year-old man who was last seen riding a black bicycle with “Kenda” written on the tires. Michael was travelling south on Highway 62 toward Prince Edward County. He is white, approximately 6’0″ tall and 175 lbs., with shoulder-length blonde hair. When last seen he was wearing a black sweater, blue jeans, tan-coloured shoes, and carrying a yellow giant tiger bag. Anyone with information on Michael’s whereabouts is asked to contact Belleville Police.

Belleville police have been busy. Officers laid charges against a 26 year old woman for allegedly throwing rocks at a vehicle yesterday. Police responded to a call yesterday afternoon reporting that a female was throwing rocks at a parked car and had smashed the car’s window. The woman was charged with mischief and failing to comply with a probation order. She will appear in court in September to answer the charges.

In another incident earlier today, Police were called to a vehicle stopped in the roadway with a woman inside. Officers determined the driver was under the influence of alcohol and drugs. A 43 year old Picton woman faces charges for driving while impaired.

Prime Minister Mark Carney announced Canadian counter measures against US tariffs today. New tariffs ranging from 15 to 50 percent will come into effect on a range of American exports to Canada including steel, aluminum, appliances, clothing, seafood and dairy products. The federal government also announced a 7.5 billion dollar support package for workers and businesses affected by US tariffs that will include loans and financing programs to help businesses adapt.

Country music legend Dolly Parton has died. Known as the “Queen of Country”, Parton was born in the Great Smoky Mountains region of Tennessee to a family of 12. She grew up poor in a two-room log cabin but was supported in her musical career by her extended family. She wrote what was to become her first hit, “Puppy Love”, when she was just 10 years old and appeared on local radio. Moving to Nashville after high school, she achieved success as a songwriter, singer and actress with hits like “Jolene”, “I will always Love you” and “9 to 5”. She won 3 Emmy’s, 11 Grammy’s and was nominated for and won countless other awards. She even had her own theme park. Famously apolitical she supported a wide range of charitable causes, favouring childhood literacy, education and disaster relief. She also lent her support to major social issues including LGBTQ+ rights and racial equality. She never had children of her own and her husband of more than 60 years, Carl Dean, died last year. She said she was finding it difficult to adjust to the change. Dolly Parton was 80 years old.

Sports

In Major League Baseball action tonight, the Kansas City Royals are in Toronto for the start of a three game series. In spite of their lackluster season, the Blue Jays are only two games back of the final wildcard spot so every game matters. The Jays will send Max Scherzer to the mound against Seth Lugo for the Royals. First pitch goes out at 7:07.

In CFL news, Montreal Alouettes defensive back Kabion Ento is the top player of the week for his contribution to the Alouettes victory over Ottawa. Ento set up one touchdown and scored another as well as forcing a fumble and making a defensive tackle. Montreal quarterback Davis Alexander and BC quarterback Nathan Rourke were also recognized as players of the week.

With LIV golf’s future in doubt, PGA Tour CEO and Commissioner Brian Rolapp said today that there are no plans to resurrect the Returning Member Program which could leave LIV golfers Bryson DeChambeau, Jon Rahm and Cameron Smith with no way to resume playing in the PGA Tour. The Returning Member Program was used by several LIV golfers to leave the LIV tour and play in PGA events again.

And the Montreal Victoire have their cup back. The Team’s keeper version of the Professional Women’s Hockey League Championship Walter Cup was lost last week while being shipped to Lethbridge, Alberta. A shipping container apparently arrived but it did not contain the cup. The trophy has been returned to the team but there is no word on how it went missing or where it was found.

OCCUPATIONS OF INTEREST

Duncan Smith spent 12 weeks with 99.3 County FM this summer as our Administrative Assistant, while also taking on radio hosting, helping archive material for our new website project and stepping in as a Community Reporter. But when Duncan isn’t behind the scenes at the station, he has a very different creative passion: painting miniature figurines for the tabletop war game Warhammer 40,000. In this conversation, Duncan takes us inside a fascinating hobby that combines storytelling, painting, building and collecting. We’ll explore what draws people to choosing and creating their own armies and factions, the artistry and patience involved in painting the tiny figures, and why so many enthusiasts become deeply immersed in the world of Warhammer 40K.

In local news, the application process to run in the October 26th municipal election closes at 2:00 PM today. So far, there are three candidates for Mayor. For the Wards:

• Picton has 3 candidates for 2 spots.
• Bloomfield/Hallowell has the most candidates with 6 vying for 2 posts;
• Ameliasburgh also has 6 candidates to elect 3 councillors;
• Athol has 3 people running for their 1 spot;
• Sophiasburg and North Marysburgh have 2 candidates each for their 1 Council seat;
• Without more candidates, Wellington, Hillier and South Maryburgh each have one candidate for their one seat.

ROAD CLOSURES

In County traffic news, there are road closures or reduced traffic today due to emergency water system repair. Maitland Street between Owen Street and Harvey Street in Picton and Second Avenue between Consecon Street and West Street in Wellington have reduced traffic today until 6 PM. Motorist are asked to take alternate routes.

Also, the Glenora ferry continues to operate one vessel on the half hour schedule. Operations resumed this morning after an overnight closure for maintenance work at the Adolphustown dock.

LAWSUIT

Internationally, A London High Court ruled today that Prince Harry and other high-profile claimants must make an interim payment of £9.54 million ($17.9 million Cdn) toward the legal costs of the Daily Mail’s publisher after losing their privacy lawsuits.

Last ⁠month, judge Matthew Nicklin comprehensively rejected the case brought by King Charles’s younger ⁠son and several others, rejecting allegations that the Mail titles had engaged in widespread unlawful activities, such as phone hacking. Singer Elton John and his Canadian husband, David Furnish, as well as actors Sadie Frost and Elizabeth Hurley were among the other high-profile names suing Associated Newspapers.

Explaining his decision on legal fees, The Judge was highly critical of the way the claimants’ case had been made, including that serious allegations had rested on “speculative and inferential” foundations.

And finally, could a mystery man who collapsed on the street in Amsterdam three years ago actually be a Canadian who has been missing for more than three decades? Police on both sides of the Atlantic are investigating the possibility.

The man, who Amsterdam police say went by the nickname “Lucky,” collapsed on May 10, 2023, after what doctors believe was a stroke or a brain hemorrhage. He was left with a condition called aphasia that impairs a person’s ability to speak, read, write and understand. Amsterdam police say he had no ID or passport.

With leads drying up, the cold case investigators published a video appeal that resulted in a flood of tips — several of which pointed to a Canadian connection. Lucky, it turns out, bears a striking resemblance to John Russell Kenny, who vanished from Vancouver more than 30 years ago.

A Vancouver police missing persons bulletin says Kenny, who would be 67 now, struggled with mental health challenges and lived a transient lifestyle. His family last had contact with him in 1993. Kenny was originally from Ontario.

Dutch police said Lucky spoke English with an American or Canadian accent. Vancouver police confirmed they were “actively collaborating” with their counterparts in the Netherlands and Interpol to determine if Lucky is indeed Kenny.

Sports

F1

F1 racing returns this weekend after their summer break. This time it is the Dutch Grand Prix from Zandvoort, Netherlands. This morning there was one practice session and the qualifier for the sprint race. The sprint race will be run tomorrow morning at 6:00 AM local time. Qualifying for the main race will start 4 hours later.

The 72 lap, 306 km race starts at 9:00 am on Sunday morning. Analysts are expecting greater competition in the second half of the season, as many teams are implementing significant upgrades to their cars following the break.

BASEBALL

In Major League Baseball, the Toronto Blue Jays start a three game home stand against the New York Yankees tonight. Their better play of late sees the team just a half game out of a wildcard spot despite having a losing record overall.

CFL

In the CFL, all the Eastern conference teams are out west for week 13. Tonight, the Montreal Alouettes face the Blue Bombers in Winnipeg. Tomorrow the Hamilton Tigers are in Calgary for an afternoon game against the Stampeders. Saturday night the Toronto Argonauts are in Regina to face the Roughriders.

HOCKEY

The pre-season for the Wellington Dukes starts this weekend. They have a home game tomorrow night at 7:30 against the Coburg Cougars. On Sunday at 3:00 they will be away in Coburg. The Dukes regular season starts Friday Sep 4 at home against the Lindsay Muskies.

The Glenora ferry will be out of service from midnight tonight to 6 am tomorrow for maintenance at the Adolphustown dock. 

The County’s Planning and Development Committee will be meeting today. They will receive an update on Base31 Housing. They will also consider a master plan for the County’s cultural heritage resources, and update a by-law on the delegation of duties to municipal employees. You can participate in the meeting in-person or virtually by registering with the County Clerk’s office. The meeting will begin at 6 this evening in Shire Hall with the live stream on the municipality’s YouTube channel.

The County wants to recognize those who have made outstanding contributions to the County’s heritage. Nominations for the County Heritage Awards are open now until August 31st at 4:30 pm. Download the nomination form and send it to the County clerk’s office, or pick up a paper copy at Shire Hall. The recipients will be announced next February.

In international environmental news: Canada ranked second-to-last in climate and environmental performance among “Global West” countries and 29th in the world, according to the Environmental Performance Index, released by the Yale Center for Environmental Law & Policy, the Yale Center for Geospatial Solutions, and Columbia University. The ranking uses 47 environmental indicators, all compiled from datasets published between 2022 and early 2026. Canada was weakest in climate change, protected lands, and fishing. Its worst ranking was in the risk to biodiversity from pesticide pollution in agriculture. Canada has made small improvements in marine and terrestrial habitat protection and emissions trends. Countries that fare better likely do so because they have strong statutory frameworks and regulatory standards for the environment.

In national consumer news: Several consumer advocacy groups across the country are warning the voice of Canadian consumers could be in jeopardy. Ottawa has announced it is phasing out the Canadian Consumer Protection Initiative as well as the Office of Consumer Affairs, which currently supports non-profit consumer organizations

Ontario advocates are calling for stronger community-based responses to the toxic drug crisis, as International Overdose Awareness Day approaches on August 31. They say the evidence supporting harm reduction has not changed, despite shifting political narratives. They also challenge the idea that communities must choose between harm reduction and treatment, when both are part of a continuum of care. And they connect the drug crisis to homelessness and a lack of stable housing and health supports, including supervised consumption sites.  

Finally, U.S. President Donald Trump announced late last night he will suspend the implementation of 50 per cent tariffs for three days. He announced the decision less than two hours before the crushing levies on a range of Canadian goods were set to take effect. Prime Minister Mark Carney characterized the administration’s decision as a postponement so trade talks can continue. Trump did not say whether any deal would lead to the permanent cancellation of the tariffs. His tariff threat was in retaliation for Ottawa’s tariffs on some U.S. goods, only levied though after Trump launched his trade war on Canada last year.

Sports

In MLB last night, the Toronto Blue Jays started a six-game road trip with the opening game of a three-game series against the AL East-leading Tampa Bay Rays. The Jays won 10 – 5, for their eighth win in 11 games. They play again tonight and tomorrow afternoon. Even though the Jays are still three games below .500, they have climbed into fourth place in the AL East, and are now only half a game out of the last wild card spot, tied with the Minnesota Twins. After this weekend’s series against the Yankees, the last 36 games of the season for the Jays are all against teams with records below .500.

In the WNBA last night, the Toronto Tempo lost 101 – 95 to the Indiana Fever. Toronto has now lost eleven in a row, sits in sixth spot in the Eastern Conference, and is close to being eliminated from playoff contention. Tonight, they visit the Washington Mystics, who are eight and two in their last 10 games. 

In MLS tonight, Toronto FC hosts Charlotte FC, CF Montreal visits the Columbus Crew, and the Western Conference-leading Vancouver Whitecaps host the Houston Dynamo.

Finally, in tennis, Felix Auger-Aliassime advanced to the round of 16 at the Cincinnati Open with a win last night. Auger-Aliassime is the only Canadian remaining in the Cincinnati Open singles bracket.
