Ricing, kneading, sautéing—participants learned step by step how to transform potatoes and flour (and salt) into pillowy bites fit for any dinner party.  Everyone thoroughly enjoyed themselves. Chef Naiwi was gracious, informative and even humorous at times. It was a treat to make their own dinner and take home Chef’s recipes, too!

If you missed our Cooking with Chef! class, look out for upcoming cooking classes, and here is the recipe for Gnocchi and the sauce.

About Silverado Vineyards

In 1981, Ron and Diane Miller family established Silverado Vineyards to begin making wines from the historic sites of their estate. Their ranches were first planted to vineyards by Napa pioneers between 1865 and 1895. Each played an important role in establishing the reputation of their appellations: Carneros, Coombsville, Yountville, Soda Creek Canyon and Stags Leap District. The beautiful fruit from these six vineyards is the exclusive source of Silverado Vineyards’ Estate and Single Vineyard wines: the Miller’s highest expression of the Napa Valley they love and admire.

First Session Was a Hit!

It was a full house in the City Club’s Library Room on a Wednesday evening as Members and guests flocked to attend the first Up Your Wine Game class of the series. City Club Member and CEO of Wine Pivot, Leticia Borges led the education session intended to help make wine more approachable, demystifying wine once and for all!

Leticia’s first session covered red wines and participants got to taste four different reds—both new and old world. In addition, a food pairing of cheese, salami and a piece of dried fruit accompanied the wines. Not your typical tasting and pairing, Leticia went over flavors and textures, and never once did she tell you what flavors you “should” be tasting.

She was boldly knowledgeable so much so that even the most neophytes of wine neophytes could follow the terminology with her witty descriptors and analogies. And she coerced the participants to chant “Rieslings can be bone dry!” (Something we won’t soon forget, that’s for sure.) Her comedic sensibility didn’t end there—she did a David Letterman style list of “Top 7 Tips to Navigating a Restaurant Wine list” – possibly one of her biggest takeaways in becoming a Normmelier®.

Stay tuned for Leticia’s next Up Your Wine Game session that will cover sparkling wines due out in August 2019.

Palm trees, grass skirts, floral prints and leis were strewn beautifully about the Main Dining Room on Thursday, June 6th. All, including service staff donned their tropical attire and leis. The City Club hosted a Luau – the ultimate summer kick-off party!

Members and guests enjoyed a delicious traditional Hawaiian feast that only Chef Naiwi can do complete with a whole roasted pig. What’s a luau without colorful drinks with tiny umbrellas? The bartenders served up two signature cocktails— Mai Tais and Coco Mojitos— in addition to the full premium bar.

A treat for the ears as Chef Naiwi strummed on his ukulele and Member, Rebecca Pla sang alongside him. Sweet Hawaiian melodies and contemporary tunes filled the room, and few guests were compelled to do a little hula.

Plan on Luaus for years to come as the inaugural event was a success. Aloha and Mahalo to those who attended and made it all happen!

Even two years later, we still are reminiscing about Dana and Arthur’s lovely wedding day here at The City Club! If Art Deco had a minimalist take, this is it. Dana set the tone for their wedding with her stunning dress, simple and elegant. Her bridesmaids were dressed in a deep burgundy, the groomsmen in matching ties, and their florals a mix of deep reds, whites and yellows.

What we loved about this wedding was all the laughing and smiling caught on camera that evening. Weddings can be stressful and a lot of work to plan each small detail. Dana and Arthur, as well as their family and friends, made sure to enjoy every second of the evening. Check out a few more of our favorite photos from their big day!

So many families! So many happy Moms!

Our City Club of San Francisco Mother’s Day Brunch just gets better each year.

Our families keep growing and more and more generations are coming out to celebrate.

This year we had a lot of kids having a lot of fun and so much delicious food.

Chef Naiwi really outdid himself – and the crowd cheered – or they would have if they weren’t too busy napping after all that brunch.

If you haven’t joined us for one of our beautiful brunch celebrations – bring the family next time.

Everybody leaves with a smile – and a cookie!

Members and guests gathered at the City Club of San Francisco last Thursday, May 9th for a creative interactive event—a flower arranging class instructed by Lisa Ann Sharpen. The class itself and the flower arrangements were a wonderful Mother’s Day gift.

Hydrangeas, tulips, roses and lilies were selected for the arrangement. Rounding it out with lush foliage, the students learned the mechanics and formula to a beautiful flower arrangement.

All supplies were provided. Wine and a lovely cheese plate were served. Students brought home their flower arrangement, as well as walked away with an invaluable creative skill. Just another fun evening at the Club.

Everyone had such a good time, there’s talk about doing it again around Thanksgiving. Creating a gorgeous Thanksgiving centerpiece could be your contribution to the holiday meal!

Tips to Make Your
Holiday Event Stand Out!

As the holiday season approaches, everyone is sending out save the dates & details for their holiday party. With endless choices of holiday parties to attend, party planners are focusing on what brings guests to the party. Free food and drinks for the party guests are not the only things on an event planner’s mind when throwing a great party. Event planners are thinking outside the box with the hopes that their event will be the one everyone is talking about into the New Year.

A Unique Venue

Hosting your event at a non-traditional space gives attendees the opportunity to mix up their mundane routine. One guest might love new and modern spaces, or love the history about a building, meaning there is no one event space that fits everyone exactly. Holding your event in a space most guests haven’t been to or would not expect, can set your event apart from those in more traditional spaces.

Experiences

There is no shortage of options when it comes to the types of activities or entertainment that can be brought to your holiday event. It is important to consider the demographic that will be attending and personalize the experiences to that group. Whether it be a cigar rolling station, a build your own succulent bar, or casino games, choose the experiences that will make your event memorable.

Is Your Holiday Event Venue Picturesque?

Attendees are looking for any opportunity to snap amazing photos at your event that will give their friends, colleagues, or family something to talk about. We all know the way guests remember an event is through their experience and through photographs. Consider the ambient lighting, the fine details on your table settings and beautifully displayed food stations. If guests are taking pictures of it, chances are, you have done something right.

On Tuesday, October 24th, The City Club of San Francisco and the San Francisco Chronicle presented the latest installment of the collaborative City Summit series, “California’s Big Issues: Do Democrats Have the Ideas and Resolve to meet them?”

We brought together the four leading Democratic Candidates for Governor – John Chiang, California State Treasurer; Antonio Villaraigosa, Former Mayor of Los Angeles; Delaine Eastin, Former State Superintendent of Public Instruction; and Gavin Newsom, Lieutenant Governor of California – on one stage to have an insightful conversation about the big issues facing the state of California. The enlightening and substantive discussion, led by the San Francisco Chronicle’s Editorial Page Editor, John Diaz, provided the candidates the opportunity to compare and contrast their ideas on the important policy decisions facing the state, including health care reform, education, housing, immigration, and climate change.

Luncheon was served to the capacity crowd, press corps and distinguished guests.
