BARRINGTON STAGE COMPANY ANNOUNCES CASTING AND CREATIVE TEAMS FOR BOEING BOEING, NEXT TO NORMAL, A TENDER THING, AND FORGIVENESS

(Pittsfield, MA – June 6, 2024) – Barrington Stage Company (BSC), under the leadership of Artistic Director Alan Paul, is pleased to announce casting for four of the company’s 30th anniversary season productions.

“As we launch Barrington Stage Company’s 30th anniversary, we are so proud to welcome a range of extraordinary talent to the Berkshires, both old friends and others making their first appearance on our stages,” said Alan Paul. “From the uproarious comedy of Boeing Boeing to the poignant depths of Next to Normal, the heartrending exploration of timeless love in A Tender Thing to the profound journey of Forgiveness, BSC audiences will encounter unforgettable stories that will resonate with them.”

Marc Camoletti’s hilarious 1960 French farce, Boeing Boeing (July 17-August 3), translated by Beverley Cross & Francis Evans, won a new generation of fans with a critically acclaimed, award-winning Broadway production in 2008. In Paris in the swinging ’60s, playboy Bernard, with help from his housekeeper Berthe, keeps a rotating group of flight attendants on standby. But with the arrival of long-lost friend Robert and the new Boeing jet, Bernard’s plans hit some turbulence.

Joining previously announced BSC Associate Artists Mark H. Dold (BSC: Waiting for Godot, Harry Clarke, Freud’s Last Session) as Robert, Christopher Innvar (BSC: The Importance of Being Earnest; A Doll’s House, Part 2; Private Lives, Faith Healer) as Bernard, and Debra Jo Rupp (BSC: Dr. Ruth, All the Way, Ring ‘Round the Moon, To Kill A Mockingbird and The Laramie Project) as Berthe, will be Gisela Chípe (BSC: 10×10 New Play Festival 2024; Broadway: POTUS) as Gloria, Stephanie Jean Lane (BSC debut; Off-Broadway: Sleep No More) as Gabriella and Kate MacCluggage (BSC: Gertrude and Claudius; Broadway: The Farnsworth Invention) as Gretchen. BSC Founding Artistic Director Julianne Boyd will direct Boeing Boeing.

The production will feature scenic design by Kristen Robinson, costume design by Sarah Jean Tosetti, lighting design by David Lander and sound design by Fabian Obispo. Intimacy director is Leigh Zimmerman, dialect coach is Amanda Quaid, clowning consultant is Michael F. Toomey. Production Stage Manager is Ryan Goshman. Assistant Stage Manager is Merit Glover.

NEXT TO NORMAL

BSC Artistic Director Alan Paul directs Next to Normal (August 13-September 8), in a co-production with Round House Theatre in Washington, DC, where it was hailed as an “impeccable, vibrant musical revival” by the Washington Post. Next to Normal, which will close the Boyd-Quinson Stage season, features music by Tom Kitt (Broadway: Bring It On, If/Then), and book and lyrics by Brian Yorkey (Broadway: If/Then, The Last Ship).

BSC’s production will star Natalie Joy Johnson (Broadway: Lempicka, Kinky Boots, Legally Blonde) as Diana and BSC Associate Artist Alan H. Green (BSC: Who Could Ask for Anything More? The Songs of George Gershwin, The Hills are Alive with Rodgers & Hammerstein; Broadway: Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, School of Rock) as Dan, with Adante Carter (National Tour: Mean Girls) as Gabe, Madison McBride (TV: “Full Circle” (Max); Regional: Chicken & Biscuits) as Natalie, Ben Clark (Regional: Next to Normal, Elegies: A Song Cycle) as Henry and Joseph Morales (National: Hamilton, In the Heights) as Dr. Madden.

The production will feature choreography by Eamon John Foley, scenic design by Wilson Chin, costume design by Helen Huang, lighting design by Cory Pattak, sound design by Ken Travis, projections design by Nick Hussong, and musical direction by Angela Steiner. Production Stage Manager is Jason Brouillard.

The original Broadway production, produced by David Stone, James L. Nederlander, Barbara Whitman, Patrick Catullo, and Second Stage Theatre, won three 2009 Tony Awards including Best Score and the 2010 Pulitzer Prize for Drama. The show recently received its London premiere in a critically acclaimed production that is transferring to the West End. Next to Normal is licensed by Music Theatre International.
GERMAIN STAGE, 36 Linden Street

 A TENDER THING

The St. Germain Stage season opens with the regional premiere of A Tender Thing (June 25-July 20) by Ben Power (Broadway: The Lehman Trilogy), which will be directed by Alan Paul.

Originally staged by the Royal Shakespeare Company, this charming and elegiac two-character play imagines what would have happened if Romeo and Juliet had not died as teenagers but had instead lived to old age.

BSC’s production will star Derek Smith (Broadway: Ring Round the Moon, The Lion King) as Romeo and Candy Buckley (BSC: Cabaret; Broadway: Cabaret, Thoroughly Modern Millie) as Juliet.

A Tender Thing will feature scenic design by Marsha Ginsberg, costume design by Ricky Reynoso, lighting design by Robert Weizel and sound design and music by Fabian Obispo. Movement is by Mayte Natalio. Voice and text consultant is Lisa Beley. Production Stage Manager is Jason Brouillard.

FORGIVENESS

Forgiveness (July 30-August 25) is a world premiere play by Mark St. Germain (BSC: Eleanor; Dr. Ruth, All the Way; Freud’s Last Session; The Happiest Man on Earth) and directed by Ron Lagomarsino (BSC: Chester Bailey, The Happiest Man on Earth). The play is set in Minnesota where prisoners are allowed to plead their case in front of the Governor, in a bid to be returned to society. In this interactive production, audiences will help determine who is worthy of forgiveness.

The cast of Forgiveness will feature Joey Collins (BSC: Scott & Hem; Broadway: Rock ’n’ Roll, The Glass Menagerie), Darlene Hope (Off-Broadway: Sistas: the Musical, Normalcy), Caesar Samayoa (Broadway: Come From Away, How to Dance in Ohio) and Peggy Pharr Wilson (BSC: 10×10 New Play Festival, Boca, Gaslight).

Scenic design is by Brian Prather, costume design by Dina El-Aziz, lighting design by Reza Behjat and sound design by Brendan Aanes. Production Stage Manager is Leslie Sears. Forgiveness is commissioned BSC’s Sydelle Blatt New Works Fund.

The St. Germain Stage season will conclude with the regional premiere of Primary Trust (September 18-October 13), winner of the 2024 Pulitzer Prize for Drama, by actress/playwright Eboni Booth and directed by Jennifer Chang. This play, about a bookstore worker who loses his job and must find a new way forward for himself, delighted Off-Broadway audiences last year at Roundabout Theatre Company. Casting for Primary Trust will be announced in coming weeks.

Matt Doyle

A native of Massachusetts and the area, Tony Winner Matt Doyle is thrilled to bring his concert to Barrington Stage Company. Doyle won the 2022 Tony Award for ‘Best Featured Actor in a Musical’ for his performance as ‘Jamie’ in the Broadway revival of Stephen Sondheim’s Company.  Matt has been performing on Broadway stages since the age of 19 and has appeared in hit shows like Spring Awakening, Bye Bye Birdie, War Horse and The Book of Mormon. Recently, Matt took on the role of Frank Sinatra in the world premiere of Sinatra: The Musical. Audiences are in for a special night of intimate storytelling and treasured songs from Matt’s illustrious career.

When Julie Benko first took the stage as the standby for Fanny Brice in Funny Girl, she could not have anticipated that she would take her bow as Broadway’s newest breakout star. Joined by her husband Jason Yeager on piano, Julie reflects on the journey leading to her meteoric rise, sharing songs and behind-the-scenes stories of her days as an understudy in Les Misérables, Fiddler on the Roof, Spring Awakening, and more. Audiences can expect to hear Broadway favorites by Stephen Sondheim, Rodgers & Hammerstein, Jerry Herman (and more) as well as an eclectic collection of songs from the pop artists like Billy Joel, The Indigo Girls and Whitney Houston. (Pittsfield, MA – January 31, 2023) – Barrington Stage Company (BSC), under the leadership of Artistic Director Alan Paul, will produce a 2023 season that will feature two major musical revivals, two world premiere plays, and two modern classic play revivals. 

“‘You gotta have heart and music.’” Bill Finn wrote those lyrics for his musical A New Brain, and they were my guiding principle as I planned my first season as Artistic Director of Barrington Stage Company,” commented Alan Paul. “The 2023 season is a mix of reimagined classics and dynamic new works. Although their subjects are vastly different, each show explores how the human spirit prevails against indomitable odds. The 29th Season is a bridge between past and future, and I am so pleased to celebrate so many of the writers, directors, and actors who have been an essential part of BSC’s history. I believe new work is the heart and soul of a theatre, so I am especially excited to produce two world premiere plays, one of which was commissioned by BSC. I am also thrilled to include such core artists as composer/lyricist Bill Finn, playwright Mark St. Germain, and actors Christopher Innvar, Mark H. Dold and Gretchen Egolf. Most gratifying is that Founding Artistic Director Julianne Boyd will return to direct a production. I have inherited a theatre of the highest quality, and I am excited to lead the charge of making world-class theatre in the Berkshires.”

BOYD-QUINSON STAGE

The Boyd-Quinson Stage will open with a new production of the 1966 Tony Award winning musical Cabaret (June 14-July 8), which will be directed by Alan Paul and choreographed by Katie Spelman. The legendary show by the team of John Kander & Fred Ebb (Chicago, New York, New York) and a book by Joe Masteroff (She Loves Me) is regarded as one of the great musicals of the 20th century. 

Next up will be a revival of Blues for an Alabama Sky (July 18-August 5) by author Pearl Cleage. Originally produced in 1995, this dreamy, atmospheric work set during the Harlem Renaissance has won a newfound appreciation as a contemporary classic that was ahead of its time. 

BSC Associate Artist and two-time Tony Award winner William Finn (BSC: The 25th Annual Putnam County Spelling Bee, The Royal Family of Broadway), will be represented with a rare revival of his deeply personal, wonderfully idiosyncratic musical, A New Brain (August 16-September 9), co-written by Pulitzer Prize and Tony Award winner James Lapine (Sunday in the Park with George, Into the Woods), and directed by BSC Associate Artist Joe Calarco (BSC: A Doll’s House, Part 2; Ragtime; Breaking the Code). Finn commented, “When James Lapine and I worked together on A New Brain for New York City Center’s Encores! in 2015, we felt it’s less about illness and more about relationships. The show should be done, and I’m thrilled that Alan has chosen it for his first season as Barrington Stage Company’s Artistic Director.”

A fourth production to be announced will play the Boyd-Quinson Stage from September 27 through October 15. 

ST. GERMAIN STAGE

The St. Germain Stage season opens with the world premiere of The Happiest Man on Earth (May 24-June 17), a new play by Mark St. Germain (BSC: Eleanor; Dr. Ruth, All the Way; Freud’s Last Session), based on the extraordinary 2020 memoir of the same name by Holocaust survivor Eddie Jaku (1920-2021), published when Jaku was 100 years old. “Jaku survived the horrors of Buchenwald, Auschwitz and a Nazi Death March,” St. Germain commented. “This is an inspirational, life affirming story of a man who believed the power of love can save all of us.” 

tiny father (July 1-23) is a world premiere play by playwright Mike Lew, directed by Moritz von Stuelpnagel (Broadway: Hand to God, Present Laughter) and co-produced with Chautauqua Theatre Company. Yew and von Stuelpnagel previously collaborated on the critically acclaimed Teenage Dick at New York’s Public Theater. Lew said, “I am ecstatic that BSC and Chautauqua are teaming up for the world premiere of tiny father and that my longtime collaborator Moritz von Stuelpnagel will come along for the ride. When I first became a parent, I knew the experience would fundamentally alter my perspective, but becoming a NICU parent was another experience entirely. I can’t wait for BSC’s audience to become the first people ever to witness that journey.”

The season will conclude with a revival of Faith Healer (August 1-27), a modern classic by Irish playwright Brian Friel (Dancing at Lughnasa, Translations), starring BSC Associate Artists Christopher Innvar (BSC: The Importance of Being Earnest; A Doll’s House, Part 2; Private Lives), Mark H. Dold (BSC: Waiting for Godot, Harry Clarke, Freud’s Last Session) and Gretchen Egolf (BSC: A Picasso, Much Ado About Nothing, Private Lives) and directed by Julianne Boyd.

The Board of Trustees of Barrington Stage Company (BSC) is pleased to announce Alan Paul as the company’s new Artistic Director. Paul, who is currently the Associate Artistic Director of the Tony Award-winning Shakespeare Theatre Company in Washington, DC, will succeed Julianne Boyd, BSC co-founder and Artistic Director, who is retiring at the end of the 2022 season after leading the company for 27 years. Paul’s programming for BSC will start with the 2023 season. 

“After a comprehensive nationwide search led by AlbertHall&Associates, Alan proved to be the perfect choice to succeed Julie,” commented BSC Board of Trustees President Marita Glodt. “He is an enormous talent, a successful director, a collaborative leader, invested in community and a champion of diversity and inclusion. He has demonstrated his love of classics, musicals and new works and his extensive knowledge of the theatrical canon. Alan Paul is the Associate Artistic Director of the Tony Award-winning Shakespeare Theatre Company, where he has worked since 2007. He also works as a theater director and is equally passionate about directing new plays and musicals as he is about re-discovering classics. His shows at Shakespeare Theatre Company have bridged the gap between classical and popular culture. His productions of Camelot, Kiss Me Kate, and Man of La Mancha are the theater’s #2, #3, and #4 highest selling productions, and Camelot won the Helen Hayes Award for Best Musical. Alan has received acclaim for his bold interpretations of Shakespeare, including a modern-dress Romeo and Juliet and The Comedy of Errors set in 1960s Greece. Alan recently directed the film of Patrick Page’s All the Devils Are Here, which was a New York Times Critic’s Pick and seen widely across America. At STC, Alan has been a leading producer on over 75 productions spanning all eras and styles. In Washington, Alan has directed at the city’s top theaters including Arena Stage, Signature Theatre, Olney Theatre Center, Studio Theatre, and Round House Theatre. Alan has a passion for classical music and works regularly at The Kennedy Center. He directed the world premiere of Penny for the Washington National Opera, the premiere of Fire and Air at the Terrace Theater and is a frequent guest with the National Symphony Orchestra. Performances of BSC’s 10X10 New Play Festival are February 13–March 8, 2020 at BSC’s St. Germain Stage, located at the Sydelle and Lee Blatt Performing Arts Center, 36 Linden Street. Tickets ($35-$37) on sale now. The Press Opening is Sunday, February 16 at 3:00 p.m.

The 10X10 Upstreet Arts Festival returns to Downtown Pittsfield for the ninth year and features music, theatre, dance, film, visual art, spoken word, comedy and more, including BSC’s 10X10 New Play Festival.

Directors for the 10X10 New Play Festival are BSC Artistic Director Julianne Boyd and returning for his fourth year, Matthew Penn (BSC’s Typhoid Mary). An Emmy-nominated director (Law & Order), Penn is a Co-Artistic Director of the Berkshire Playwrights Lab in Great Barrington and directed the Off Broadway play Mother of the Maid starring Glenn Close.
