]]>ABM explores the abortion vs. adoption debate as well as suggests that the word "orphan" may be overused in adoption circles. Mimi tackles diversity in movies and TV through the lens of Tim Burton's Miss Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Netflix's Luke Cage. She questions whether there is such a thing as too much, too little or just right? The ladies round out their topic discussion by providing some Add Water guidance on avoiding cultural appropriation in Halloween costumes.
During the Wind Down the ladies chat about what they're watching on TV and things quickly devolve into a hall pass "dibs" feud over actor Mahershala Ali. Prompted by a birth mother's request not to be called BM in a social media support group and subsequently being accused of being "too sensitive," ABM and Mimi explore adoption language and whether it really meets the needs of the community. Although RAL is designed to promote respect and dignity in the adoption community, this language has been criticized for being dismissive of unethical practices sometimes present in adoption.

Mimi and ABM reminisce about singing Lift Every Voice and Sing, reciting MLK Jr. speeches and specially decorated bulletin boards at school. They discuss the need to embrace and teach Black history to provide children with lessons in inclusive history, as well as the need to provide children of color with narratives that include people who look like them. All families must be deliberate in teaching Black history since traditional schooling may not provide sufficient opportunities for such learning. She describes homes where she was treated well and felt safe, and homes where she just looked forward to being moved to the next home. She also talks about her life with ABM, and their struggles with placement. Everything, everything, everything (!) was new and different and it was kind of hard and overwhelming.
Hope drops the science on what she thinks prospective foster and adoptive families should know about foster kids. She also provides some advice and encouragement to other foster kids who need loving, permanent homes. Hope and ABM also discuss the support that first/birth families need to keep their families together and keep kids out of foster care.
As she wraps up, Hope urges families going through tough times with their kids to remember to stick with it. She says despite the fact that kids can act out, don’t give up because they “could get a really cool kid! Don’t refund the kid!” Stick with the kid no matter what.
ABM is bursting with pride because, indeed, she got a *really* cool kid!

]]>On the ninth episode of Add Water and Stir, Mimi and ABM chat about creating new rituals and traditions for and with their kids. Establishing new traditions can be hard for families: negotiating in-law expectations, choosing which holidays to observe and double-backing to create memories for older kids who missed having certain experiences. The Wine Down is *still* without a rachet show to anchor, but show hosts chat about the Real Housewives franchise, Shondaland and Blackish. @mimicomplex @adoptiveblkmom #addwater

]]>On the eighth episode of Add Water and Stir, Mimi and ABM discuss their perceived challenges in being Black, middle class, adoptive parents. While their “bougie” scores are relatively low, each new mom chatted about her feelings in helping her child keep up with the Joneses in terms of education, activities, discipline and other social expectations. Admitting that these may be First World problems, they note that this is when they consider the lessons in teaching social code switching the most. The Wine Down is currently without a reality show (boo!), but ABM dishes and side eyes Aretha Franklin’s recent appearance on David Letterman. @mimicomplex @adoptiveblkmom #addwater
