AWAS 055: Celebrating Black History Month with Family AWAS 055: Celebrating Black History Month with Family Wed, 22 Feb 2017 15:59:15 +0000 February is Black History Month in the United States, and this is a month when the hosts really go hard on raising awareness about the contributions of African-American and black Americans with their children.  ABM and Mimi discuss how if families are talking about the contributions of diverse historical figures all the time, then the need to compensate during awareness months is less. Black history, as well as diversity contributions from all people of color, should be integrated into family life every day.

The third week of February is National Random Act of Kindness Week. The hosts discuss how observing this awareness week provides a nice opportunity to teach their children to be kind to each other. Let's start a wave of kindful acts.

days when they chuckled about Cissy Houston side-eyeing Aretha Franklin.

Mimi and ABM conclude the show with a big announcement: Add Water and Stir will be sunsetting at the end of February.  The archives will still be available as will the Facebook page and Twitter feed. The show is being retooled and rebranded. The ladies will be back and ready to rock in early June 2017!

AWAS 053: Parenting Plans for 2017 AWAS 053: Parenting Plans for 2017 Tue, 17 Jan 2017 22:30:00 +0000 On the first episode of 2017, Mimi and ABM return from their holiday break to discuss what's in store for their families for the year. The ladies shied away from setting New Year's resolutions due to the poor success rates associated with keeping those resolutions. Instead, ABM and Mimi set larger goals for their families for 2017. They discuss their family plans for the year, and note the differences in their family goals based on the ages of Hope and Nana. Spoiler alert--both families have goals related to weekend activities, but they could not be more different!

During the show's second segment, ABM and Mimi dish about all the plans they have for Add Water and Stir for 2017! There will be a new podcast website, more interviews on topics you want to hear about, guest blogging opportunities, and the return of quarterly live shows! There will also be new show segments and lots of great content on the Add Water and Stir page on Facebook. The ladies hope to make Add Water and Stir your primary source of information on adoption and raising healthy well-adjusted children of color.

Of course, they kick of the new year with a Wind Down segment about the San Francisco phenomenon "Cutty Bangs."

AWAS 049: The Issues and Early Voting Episode AWAS 049: The Issues and Early Voting Episode Tue, 25 Oct 2016 15:30:00 +0000 On this episode of Add Water and Stir, Mimi and ABM get back to basics by catching up on a few adoption and diversity topics. The ladies gave themselves 5 minutes to dive into 4 topics.

ABM explores the abortion vs. adoption debate as well as suggests that the word "orphan" may be overused in adoption circles. Mimi tackles diversity in movies and TV through the lens of Tim Burton's Miss Miss Peregrine's Home for Peculiar Children and Netflix's Luke Cage. She questions whether there is such a thing as too much, too little or just right? The ladies round out their topic discussion by providing some Add Water guidance on avoiding cultural appropriation in Halloween costumes.

During the Wind Down the ladies chat about what they're watching on TV and things quickly devolve into a hall pass "dibs" feud over actor Mahershala Ali. Since it's election season, they decided to put it to a vote: Who gets to call dibs on Mahershala Ali? She questions whether there is such a thing as too much, too little or just right? The ladies round out their topic discussion by providing some Add Water guidance on avoiding cultural appropriation in Halloween costumes.

During the Wind Down the ladies chat about what they're watching on TV and things quickly devolve into a hall pass "dibs" feud over actor Mahershala Ali. Since it's election season, they decided to put it to a vote: Who gets to call dibs on Mahershala Ali? AWAS 046: Domestic Infant Adoption - Team Java's Story AWAS 046: Domestic Infant Adoption - Team Java's Story Wed, 31 Aug 2016 12:00:00 +0000 On this episode of Add Water and Stir, the ladies finally sit down to talk about domestic infant adoption (DIA). According to a recent article in Adoptive Families, more than 18,000 newborns are adopted in the US each year. This represents about 13% percent of adoptions in the US,  the number of newborn adoptions have steadily declined since the mid-1970s as more birth families chose to parent.

DIA can be complicated as hopeful adoptive parents wrestle with costs, the match process, and interstate compact issues. DIA can also be beautiful as expanded families are created through open adoption.

Jason and Yava, Team Java, are a young, professional African American couple who recently adopted a beautiful baby girl; they share their recent DIA experiences with Mimi and ABM on this episode of the show.

To date, in 44 episodes, we've only had 1 father on the show (Episode 39: The Changing Face of Foster Care), Daryn who is a foster father in NYC.  Most of the content out there focuses on the voice of women in the adoption triad--whether its birth mothers, adoptive mothers and women adoptees.  The father's narrative is often minimal and frankly, rarely heard.

So, Al Coates, our UK friend of the Add Water family joins us on the show to talk about fatherhood, adoption and foster care, transracial parenting and a bunch of other stuff! Al blogs at Misadventures of an Adoptive Dad.and we are delighted that he's helping us take Add Water and Stir abroad with our first international interview.

AWAS 044: Back to School Anxieties AWAS 044: Back to School Anxieties Tue, 02 Aug 2016 00:12:51 +0000 On this episode of Add Water and Stir we explore our anxiety as parents as we prepare to send our children back to school. We talk about the need to manage ourselves as we manage our kids and their challenges.  School can be a really, really stressful place for kids from hard places. There are lots of new people, lots of adults with expectations, lots of work that isn't always easy to do. Kids who have trouble can express a range of emotions and behaviors--some of which may be challenging and disruptive at home and at school.

For our part as parents, sending our kids back to school can also be anxiety provoking. For us it can mean lots of emails and visits with teachers and lots of meetings with school staff--counselors, social workers, psychologists. There may be 504 screening meetings, IEP related meetings, and testing. We spend lots of time away from home or work and lots of time advocating for our children, who really would prefer we just advocated that they stay home.

AWAS 039: The Changing Face of Foster Care AWAS 039: The Changing Face of Foster Care Mon, 23 May 2016 12:30:00 +0000 The mission of our podcast is to give voice and visibility to families like ours who are typically not a part of the adoption conversation.   So we are pretty geeked that, today we have two foster parents that are affiliated with the Foundling, a New York based charity that empowers thousands of children and families to live independent, stable and fulfilling lives.   Our guests today are Stephanie Lopez and Daryn Eato, welcome to the Add Water and Stir Podcast

May is National Foster Care Month in the US.  More than 400,000 children in the United States are in foster care; usually with the goal of being reunited with their birth families or being adopted. The families who provide safe and healing homes for foster children are a special bunch and on this episode of Add Water and Stir, ABM and Mimi take some time to explore one example of an NGO that provides support for foster and birth families.

On the second segment, reveal their mutual ambivalence about Mother's Day. The holiday triggers memories of personal loss, their children's' losses and those of their birth mothers. Although they are grateful for the opportunity to be mothers, their respective journeys to motherhood shape the way they view the holiday devoted to this role.

In the Wind Down, Mimi and ABM reminisce about when they were little girls. Before you know it they are in a time machine back to when they were cheering and wearing

AWAS 037: Wrestling with Parenting Guilt AWAS 037: Wrestling with Parenting Guilt Tue, 26 Apr 2016 18:00:00 +0000 Parents often feel guilty about all kinds of things. We question whether we spent enough time with our children, whether we are able to provide enough opportunities for them, whether we are using the right kinds of consequences and motivators for our children. During this episode, ABM and Mimi talk about their own experiences with parenting guilt as well as adoption guilt. It turns out, that the guilt is tied very closely with shame and depression. The big takeaway? Go easy on ourselves and practice more self-care.

On the second segment, the ladies discuss the use of respectful/positive adoption language (RAL). Prompted by a birth mother's request not to be called BM in a social media support group and subsequently being accused of being "too sensitive," ABM and Mimi explore adoption language and whether it really meets the needs of the community. Although RAL is designed to promote respect and dignity in the adoption community, this language has been criticized for being dismissive of unethical practices sometimes present in adoption.

In the Wind Down, Mimi and ABM chuckle about singing gospel spirituals to deal with the stress of child-rearing. They also briefly chat about Mimi missing a possible hall pass opportunity with Don Cheadle.

They discuss the need to embrace and teach Black history to provide children with lessons in inclusive history, as well as the need to provide children of color with narratives that include people who look like them. All families must be deliberate in teaching Black history since traditional schooling may not provide sufficient opportunities for such learning. The ladies wrap the segment with some of their favorite resources for teaching Black history to their girls.

AWAS 033: Hope Shares Her Script AWAS 033: Hope Shares Her Script Fri, 13 Nov 2015 13:28:31 +0000 On the 33rd episode of the Add Water and Stir podcast, the ladies observe National Adoption Awareness Month and the #FliptheScript movement by featuring ABM’s daughter, Hope, as this week’s guest.

Hope talks about her time in foster care.  Having stayed in 7 homes in a four year period she’s a bit of a kid expert on foster care. She describes homes where she was treated well and felt safe, and homes where she just looked forward to being moved to the next home. She also talks about her life with ABM, and their struggles with placement.  Everything, everything, everything (!) was new and different and it was kind of hard and overwhelming.

Hope drops the science on what she thinks prospective foster and adoptive families should know about foster kids. She also provides some advice and encouragement to other foster kids who need loving, permanent homes. Hope and ABM also discuss the support that first/birth families need to keep their families together and keep kids out of foster care.

As she wraps up, Hope urges families going through tough times with their kids to remember to stick with it. She says despite the fact that kids can act out, don’t give up because they “could get a really cool kid! Don’t refund the kid!” Stick with the kid no matter what.

ABM is bursting with pride because, indeed, she got a *really* cool kid!

They may have been moved quickly, be overwhelmed with emotion and have physical and emotional needs that require immediate attention. This can make very a pretty stress inducing scenario for parents as well. Angela walks the ladies through resources available to foster families who may need assistance with back to school shopping, the paperwork hurdles associated with registering kids in new schools and how to craft responses to the inevitable questions about your child’s back story.

In the Wind Down, everyone talks about their fall TV addictions and their celebrity “hall pass!” There are some great giggles as we wind down the show!

So what happens when you’re just living your life and you need to pick up that one thing from the 7-11 and your kid is sleeping or chilling in the car, and you think your errand will only take a couple of minutes—do you leave your child in the car and risk something happening, someone filing a CPS report OR do you take your kid into the store risking a potential tantrum? The decision tree triggered in this scenario reminds us that the old school “village” is no more, and parents are feeling both alone and judged on their parenting journeys.

In the Wine Down, ABM and Mimi discuss the first Real Housewives of Atlanta reunion show and the new season of Love and Hip Hop: Atlanta.

According to the Child Welfare Information Gateway, approximately 10-25% of adoption placements are disrupted prior to finalization, and anywhere from 1% of 5% of adoptions dissolve after finalization.  Lack of preparation and support to cope with emotional and behavioral issues, social isolation, frequent changes in agency staffing all can play a role in adoption failure.  Data is unclear on the prevalence of rehoming (informal post-finalization placements); the practice is highly controversial due to the added risk to vulnerable children.

In the Wine Down, ABM and Mimi breakdown the season 2 finale of Being Mary Jane (what a mess!) and all the revelations of the final 10 minutes of the show.  The episode includes some parenting catch up and recommendations.

On this episode, the hosts Add Water and Stir, the ladies explore the Carefree Black Girls movement.  Launched on a Tumblr site, the movement initially simply focused on images of Black women being happy; the more complex evolution of #CarefreeBlackGirls advances a life for Black women that is unfettered and unbothered by critiques on their beauty, style, lifestyles, class or choices.  At least, that’s what AdoptiveBlackMom and ComplicatedMelodi’s Mimi wrestle with by the end of the discussion.  The Add Water hope to raise #CarefreeBlackGirls in both NaNa and Hope.

AWAS 017: Parenting in the News AWAS 017: Parenting in the News Mon, 09 Mar 2015 03:30:53 +0000

On this episode, the hosts of Add Water and Stir discuss a couple of recent parenting issues making national headlines. Mimi explored articles on being an older parent, “older” being defined as over 35. Older parents are thought to be be more emotionally and financially stable; but gosh are they tired and they worry about becoming a burden on their children.  ABM explored “Free Range Parenting” philosophy.  Is free range parenting really the opposite of helicopter parenting and how does it intersect with race and socio-economic privilege issues?  Throughout, they both chat about their parenting approaches in raising a toddler and a teen.

Mary Jane is messy and doesn’t really having any good girlfriends.  Meanwhile over on Empire, how can artists who should be under contract be stolen to another record company, why hasn’t a DNA test been performed on the cutie patootie child claimed by Jamal and finally, is the fact that no one noticed Andre was going off the rails a commentary on mental illness denial in the African American community?

This change can mean many things to everyone in the family and trigger all kinds of reactions. Adoptees may resent both the erasure of their birth parents and involuntary disclosure about the adoption.  Adoptive parents might feel odd having a document that says they gave birth to a child when they did not.  This document is an important tool in our lives; the post-finalization birth certificate becomes all the more important to the people who hold them.

In the Wine Down, ABM and Mimi talk about how they’ve abandoned the Real Housewives and Married at First Sight.  They recommend the scripted show Being Mary Jane on BET, along with a Season 1 recap from the ladies of Whisky, Wine and Moonshine.  Empire continues to look promising if ABM can ever remember what  night it airs!

During the Wine Down segment the hosts dish on Real Housewives of Atlanta premier and messiness of Apollo and Phaedra as Apollo heads back to the clink.

Listeners are invited to Tweet Mimi (@mimicomplex) and ABM (@adoptiveblkmom) with recommendations on how adoptive parents can be good allies to adoptees with the hashtag #addwater.
