Show Transcript:
The Disney Baby has been born. By now you have probably heard that the Disney corporation has launched a new line of products geared towards newborn babies. In doing so they claim to and I quote "create magical moments from the start."
The center of the website for these products reads,
"We just love to see the way families connect and grow. But it's those special moments with Dad and your baby (your baby!) that we hope to make even more magical."
To the right of the text is a box with the heading Meet Other Moms.
Given this little bit of information I have given you what discursive practices are holding in place which dominant systems of meaning? Clearly the target audience is new moms in conjunction with the dad or father figure, inspite of the growing number of families with two moms or two dads.
You can imagine the flurry of responses to the new line that range from delight to disgust from excitement to being horrified.
So the question to Disney or not to Disney comes up once again and I urge us to consider one more time the ways in which the perspective from which you enter into any event or experience impacts what you come away with. Not buying Disney products in and of itself is not critical literacy. The critical piece comes through being able to unpack the hidden ideologies that stem from the world of Disney and therefore not buying into those ideologies. The critical also comes through understanding the position from which you enter into readings of Disney and so forth. It comes from the recognition that the language you encounter is not natural or neutral and that it does particular life work.
But this is not just about Disney of course. A short time ago for instance my family and I visited a store where we discovered a barrel full of stuffed toys. These furry creatures were particularly interesting as they had no body or legs. I'll post a photo in my show notes. This is how the toy is advertised. acirc;euro;oelig;Inspire your child's imagination by adding a new friend to the playroom or bedroom wall! This Plush Deer Wall Head mount resembles the real thing, but its soft fur and harmless stuffed rack makes it much more approachable! Perfect for the young outdoorsman who wants to become a hunter like his dad or mom! Makes a fun gift for the hunter-to-be! I'm glad to see mom added to the advertisement. Note that the toy is geared toward the young outdoorsman who wants to be like his mom or dad. Not so glad to see the camouflage baby bib or camouflage onesies located right by the stuffed wall mount animal heads. I haven't heard much resistance or disruption of this text in spite of the fact that like Disney this product works to induct children into particular ways of being, into a particular lifestyle.
So the issue at hand goes beyond to Disney or not to Disney. What do you think? What are some things we can do in schools and at home to disrupt dominant ideologies and discursive practices? Weigh in by leaving a comment on the clip homepage at www.clippodcast.com .

Welcome to Show 64 of the CLIP Podcast. Tonight I have for you another multi-modal text set which is a combination of print based, music, media, art based texts, amongst other kinds of text, that focus on a particular topic or issue. What I like most about these text sets is that they provide for us opportunities to think about certain issues in multiple ways and often from multiple perspectives. When we read any text, listen to any song, view any piece of art or film, and so forth , we do so from particular ideological positions, we canacirc;euro;trade;t avoid this because the experiences weacirc;euro;trade;ve had, the discourses or the ways of being, talking, doing that weacirc;euro;trade;ve lived become tools that we use, whether consciously or not when making meaning in the world. So these discourses inform the positions from which we are able to communicate in the world. They also influence the ways in which what we communicate positions others in the world. Text sets therefore better inform our thinking on particular topics or issues because they allow us to read one text against another or to rub one text against another.
In tonightacirc;euro;trade;s episode is Marissa Campos talking about Disrupting Gender Stereotypes.

Andy, my partner and I recently took our 4 year old to Disneyland for somewhat of a family reunion and it was great to meet up with our relatives from the West Coast. To Disney or not to Disney, I know is a question many people have struggled over. Here's what I think. The perspective from which you enter into any event or experience makes a difference in what you come away with. Not going to Disneyland in and of itself is not critical literacy.
Disney background noise:
Andy : ldquo; Did you hear that?
Vivian :ldquo; What ?
Andy :ldquo; That woman over there with her daughter dressed as Cinderella just said "Will you hurry up! you're not being very princess-like"
Now see what is problematic about what Andy overheard while we were in Disneyland, is the way the woman, caregiver, mother, positioned Disney as an authority on life or the way things should be. Specifically the way girls should be. Disney of course cuts up the world in a particular way.
I doubt, however, if staying away from Disneyland would have disrupted that mother's problematic representation of what it means to be a girl. So the issue at hand goes beyond to Disney or not to Disney. What do you think? What are some things we can do in schools and at home to disrupt dominant sexist ideologies and discursive practices? Weigh in by leaving a comment on the clip homepage at www.clippodcast.com or by leaving me voice mail at the number listed in the show notes.
To wrap up tonight's episode, here is Deirdre Flint and Epcot USA.
Epcot USA song:
That was Deirdre Flint and Epcot USA. I hope that Deirdre and I have given you at least a couple of things to think about from a critical literacy perspective.
Until next time!

Show 52
Intro
Hello Everyone,
Yes - I am back after an unexpected absence so thank you to those of you who have hung in there and who have kept subscribed and welcome to those of you who are joining me for the first time.
This is show #52 of the CLIP Podcast!
Bumper from Jeff Roney
Some of you may have heard that I co-organized a Podcamp with Andy from the AndyCast Podcast.
Podcamp EDU held at American University on Dec. 10 focused specifically on intersections between podcasting, new media, and education. It was deliberately a smallish conference of 70 or so people, podcasters and non-podcasters, educators and those interested in education and educational issues.
There were some really great sessions and presenters including Andy Carvin from PBS, Joel Witt from Maryland Zoo TV, Steph Stockman. from NASA and Nick Guzman and Rebeca Logan who founded Red Bloguera, home of the first Spanish language podcast. There were so many amazing presenters and participants.
Weeks after the event, Andy and I continue to find blog posts, twitter tweets and other online conversations regarding the success of buzz going. We look forward to seeing you all again next year.
I believe this was the first podcamp with a very specific focus on the ways in which social media technology can be used as tools in educational settings. It was a great opportunity to think about what these technologies can afford teaching and learning and in terms of critical literacy, a great opportunity to think about how social media can be used as tools in our critical literacy work. This podcast, CLIP podcast, is an example of how a social media tool can be used to do critical literacy work. In the case of CLIP, Iacirc;euro;trade;m using podcasting as a tool to make accessible critical literacy issues and demonstrations of critical literacy practice. So social media does not constitute critical literacy but social media has vast potential for furthering critical literacy work.
I believe it would be useful for us to think about Lankshear and Knobelacirc;euro;trade;s distinction between Web 1.0 and Web 2.0
They begin by saying that we need not only to think about new technologies but also new ethos, a new way of thinking about and being with new technologies. A Web1.0 Mindset focuses on the question how do I technologize my existing practice? Tools to do this include more traditional websites, Ofoto, or Brittanica Online. A Web2.0 Mindset asks the question what might new technologies afford the work I do? Tools to do this include, podcasting, blogging, flickr and so forth.
So, to shift mindsets we need to first consider what technology can afford the particular work we are doing rather than finding ways to technologize our existing classroom practice. At PodcampEDU we had a collection of presenters who created spaces for participants to engage in this shifting of mindsets if they hadnacirc;euro;trade;t done so already.
Andy and I will begin to start releasing audio of the presentations from Podcamp EDU as soon as possible so keep tabs on that.

Welcome to show 48. Thank you for hanging in there and continuing to listen. This show is so long overdue. Lots of family stuff and work related matters to take care of but finallyacirc;euro;brvbar;here I am.
People used to ask me, when I was a classroom teacher of young children, acirc;euro;tilde;how do you do it?acirc;euro;trade; I never thought much of the question, mostly because I never found teaching to be that hardacirc;euro;brvbar;that is until I stopped teaching young children full time. Now I ask myself the same question. How did I do it? My answer is the same each time. And no, I didnacirc;euro;trade;t do it for the love of the children. Donacirc;euro;trade;t get me wrong, I love working with kids itacirc;euro;trade;s just that use of the phrase acirc;euro;tilde;for the love of the childrenacirc;euro;trade; has been a great way of positioning teachers to work long hours without getting paid overtime and spending their own money on classroom materials and professional development that really ought to be provided by school districts. But I digressacirc;euro;brvbar;enough of that. Back to my answeracirc;euro;brvbar; I was saying that whenever I ask myself how I did what I did as a teacher of young children my answer is always the same. I surrounded myself with a group of colleagues, not from my own school but other schools in the area, with whom I did my thinking. We worked to support, and encourage one another. Not too long ago I met an incredible group of teachers in Winnipeg Manitoba who also have supported one another through the ups and downs and the ins and outs of teaching. I was fortunate to be able to spend some time with them talking about critical literacy while we enjoyed a lovely dinner and shared some wine at an incredible restaurant in Winnipeg.
Conversationacirc;euro;brvbar;
Thanks to Wayne Serebrin, Tracey Douglas, Chris Wigglesworth, Cora Campbell, Denise Murphy, and Tannis Nishibata-Chan whose voices you heard in todayacirc;euro;trade;s show and whose voices you will be hearing in upcoming shows, one that focuses on creating spaces for families to engage with critical literacies, and another that focuses on popular culture and everyday text . It was absolutely energizing to be in your company. I canacirc;euro;trade;t wait for us to get together again.

Once again, Iacirc;euro;trade;ll be releasing two shows this week. Todayacirc;euro;trade;s show will feature another quotable quote but before sharing that with you I want to invite you to celebrate my 50th show, which seems to have snuck up on me, by sending in e-mail or audio comments regarding what clip has meant to you. You can reach me at clippodcast@gmail.com or leave a voice mail at 206-984-1778. There is a catch here though because my 50th comes up next week! So if you could send your thoughts by Monday, July 2, Iacirc;euro;trade;ll be in good shape to put those together.
Bumper
Andy and I recently returned from attending Podcasters Across Borders in Kingston, Ontario. We had an amazing time. Iacirc;euro;trade;m so glad to have become part of an incredibly supportive podcasting community. Iacirc;euro;trade;ll be posting photos on my Flickr page so you can see for yourself what a terrific time we all had. During his presentation, Neil Gorman used the analogy of podcasters as seeking out new frontiers as in the days of Star Trek , the original episode, to boldly go where no-one has gone before. This weekacirc;euro;trade;s quotable quote fits nicely with this line of thinking.
...the more a literacy practice privileges participation over publishing, distributed expertise over centralized expertise, collective intelligence over individual possessive intelligence, collaboration over individuated authorship, dispersion over scarcity, sharing over ownership, experimentation over "normalization", innovation and evolution over stability and fixity, creative-innovative rule breaking over generic purity and policing, relationship over information broadcast, and so on, the more we should regard it as a "new" literacy.
The quote comes from A New Literacies Sampler by Michel Knobel and Colin Lankshear.
Stunning and breathtaking are words I would use to describe some of the work Iacirc;euro;trade;ve seen produced by fellow podcasters, and thatacirc;euro;trade;s no exageration. Thanks to Mark, Bob, Andrea, and Cat and all the other attendees for an amazing weekend. I look forward to seeing you all next year!
Keep an eye out for my next show where Iacirc;euro;trade;ll take you to the Canadian Prairies for a conversation with a group of friends who are exploring critical literacies in Winnipeg, Manitoba.

Welcome back. Iacirc;euro;trade;ll be releasing a couple of shows back to back this week so keep listening. The other day Kathleen King co-host of Podcast for Teachers with whom I did a session at Podcamp New York sent me an e-mail to touch base, which I very much appreciate, and also to congratulate me on the upcoming 50th episode of CLIP. Iacirc;euro;trade;ll have more for you regarding how you might participate in the 50th show in an upcoming episode.
For now, hereacirc;euro;trade;s your quotable quote to jump start your day.
"Critical literacy, on the other hand, foregrounds the role of language in establishing and maintaining taken-for-granted, business-as-usual. It closely examines the ways in which language practices carve up the world according to certain socially-valued criteria (and not other sets of criteria); draws attention to inequities; and calls for a rethinking of theories considered "natural" or unassailable."
This quote is from Critical Cyberliteracies:What Young People can Teach us About Reading and Writing the World by Michele Knobel and Colin Lankshear This was a keynote paper presented at the National Council of English Teachers' Assembly for Research Mid-Winter Conference. New York, February 22-24, 2002.
If you have a quote that connects with critical literacy in some way Iacirc;euro;trade;d love to hear from you. You can e-mail your text to clippodcast@gmail.com
Or if you are able to call in your quotes that would be even better.

Natasha, a student in a course on critical literacy that I taught this past spring had a post on her blog titled "quotes to inspire critical literacy..." She said that she tries to pick quotes that have some reference to education or math, the subject she teaches, or some life lesson. She also invited students to bring in quotes and offer them up for class discussion. Inspired by Natasha's post, I decided to try a new segment on CLIP using Quotable Quotes.
Thank you so much to Sonia Nieto for sending the following quote to get this segment started...
"To study is not to consume ideas, but to create and re-create them."
Paulo Freire (1985) author of The Politics of Education: Culture, Power, and Liberation.

CLIP 42 Partial Transcript
Intro
Welcome to show 42 of the CLIP pocast. This show is dedicated to Carol Felderman and the 100%Kids group.
On tonightacirc;euro;trade;s show I focus on critical literacy in a second grade classroom in Virginia. For years, the second grade classes in the school had gone on a trip to the Baltimore Aquarium. It was an excursion children looked forward to as they left first grade and moved into second grade. In fall 2006 this changed as the second graders were told it was too expensive to go on the trip and that they wouldnacirc;euro;trade;t be going. Carol Felderman, a very inspiring and passionate teacher, who youacirc;euro;trade;ve heard from previously on CLIP, had at the time been framing her teaching from a critical literacy perspective so her students were not foreign to problematizing the way things are. As a group they decided to find a way to get the second grade kids to the Baltimore Aquarium. One of the things they first did was to ask for a meeting with the school principal. Encouraged by his openness to their proposals regarding ways to raise funds for the trip, the children moved forward hosting popcorn sales, bingo and pizza nights and so forth. On May 8, 2007, after months of fundraising all the childrenacirc;euro;trade;s hard work paid off as they boarded a bus to the Baltimore Aquarium.
Following is audio from the children talking about their trip. This audio is part of a podcast that Carol, her second graders and I have been releasing since the beginning of the year. The podcast is 100% Kids a show that focuses on kids affecting change in different ways. Have a listen. Iacirc;euro;trade;ll link to the show in the shownotes. Enjoy!

Partial Transcript
Show 38 already! Can you believe it! Welcome back. Tonight I have a treat for you.
When I first started podcasting I did so with the particular intent of sharing what I know about critical literacy and engaging you in sharing with me and other listeners your thoughts, comments, questions, connections, issues and teaching practices with regards to critical literacies in and outside of school.
As time went on and more and more of you started commenting and offering suggestions from which I have created shows and as I started to develop some wonderful friendships with others in the podcasting community, I began imagining different ways that podcasting could find a place in the world of parenting, teaching, learning and researching.
So, for the next while Iacirc;euro;trade;ll be sharing work Iacirc;euro;trade;ve done with classroom teachers, in the courses I teach as well as in my work with Carol Felderman and her second graders. This is actually where I want to start by sharing with you a podcast created by a group of second graders who call themselves 100% Kids. In this show Iacirc;euro;trade;ll play one of their earlier podcasts and then in a subsequent show Iacirc;euro;trade;ll take you behind the scenes to meet Carol and some of her students so that you can hear first hand about how the show was born.
Thanks To:
Before I go I want to say thank you to the following people for contributing to the show, participating in the show, commenting on the show or contacting me regarding the show;
Erin , John Sparrow, Caroline Petrow, Andrea of Just One More Book, Will, Collette, Lara, Charles of Mostly News, Whittney of LD Podcast, Andrew, Bayonle, Chris Brogan, Sue, Sharon Greene, Rachel, Jenn, Kristina, my good friend Brec Cooke. And of course a special thank you to Carol Felderman and 100%Kids and of course Frank for the station ID.

An Interview with Mini Grey _ CLIP 34
Intro
Hello Everyone! Here we are with show #34 of the CLIP Podcast. Tonight I have for you a long-awaited interview with Mini Grey author of Traction Man and The Adventures of the Dish and Spoon amongst other books. We did the interview using e-mail so this evening Andrea Ross of Just One More Book very graciously agreed to read Miniacirc;euro;trade;s responses. So thank you very much to Mini for the interview and to Andrea for helping me with tonightacirc;euro;trade;s show!
What I like most about Traction Man and Adventures with Dish and Spoon is the way both texts offer different perspectives on familiar characters such as superheroes and nursery rhyme characters. Traction man is also packed with a number of social issues that create space for taking up notions of gender, war, identity construction, positioning, and so forth.
Midtro
What are three things you think we should know about you?
I have a nearly four month old son called Herbie, a partner called Tony and a cat called Bonzetta who is sitting next to the computer keyboard right now. I live in Oxford and love walking up hills and along rivers.
What motivates or inspires you to write books like Traction Man or The Adventures of the Dish and the Spoon?
I love picture books acirc;euro;ldquo; with picture books you can use words and pictures as a double act, even tell two different versions of a story at the same time. Because even very young people are expert readers of pictures, you can convey very complex and subtle messages through pictures that youacirc;euro;trade;d need loads of words to explain. Making a picture book is also a bit like making your own film acirc;euro;ldquo; and you can make ANYTHING YOU WANT happen, however impossible!
In Traction Man the environment is actually very ordinary acirc;euro;ldquo; so the fun is in inventing all the objects that will be there acirc;euro;ldquo; or trying to imagine ordinary objects seen from a slightly different angle. For example, when I was trying to work out the underwater world of the Sink, I was trying to imagine a sink that Jacques Cousteau might explore, and what sort of undersea creatures could soggy cornflakes and tomato peel and bacon rind turn into, and how in that environment a dishcloth could become like a lethal giant squid acirc;euro;ldquo; so itacirc;euro;trade;s perhaps trying to give ordinary objects a secret life.
I think sometimes it is more inspiring to take a quite ordinary situation and introduce one extraordinary thing into it acirc;euro;ldquo; than it is to imagine a whole amazing world where absolutely anything can happen. I think it can encourage creativity to begin with a few limitations. And itacirc;euro;trade;s about seeing the analogies between things, using your imagination acirc;euro;ldquo; how a trainer could be a bit like a spaceship, and kitchen unit could be a bit like a cliff, a bit of lateral thinkingacirc;euro;brvbar; If you imagine being about 30cm high, just about everything in a house turns into an adventurous environment acirc;euro;ldquo; a bath becomes an ocean, a shrubbery becomes a jungle acirc;euro;ldquo; and just imagine if you met the house...

In This Show:
CLIP 31 is short, sweet and fun.
Welcome to this special edition of the CLIP Podcast. I had no plans on putting together this show until I received a comment from Julie a second grader from Virginia. So a big hello to Julie and her classmates as well as her teacher Carol! In any case Iacirc;euro;trade;ve been working with Julieacirc;euro;trade;s teacher, Carol on creating spaces for critical literacy in her classroom and one of the tools that weacirc;euro;trade;ve talked about for doing this, is podcasting. Julie and her classmates have had a chance to listen to some podcasts created by children as well as CLIP to help them figure out if podcasting may be of interest to them and today in her e-mail she excitedly shared that in class earlier this week, they chose a name for their show. It will be called 100% Kids. Awesome. I canacirc;euro;trade;t wait to get started on this project with them.
So this show is for you 100%Kids Group! I thought Iacirc;euro;trade;d put out a special show to share with you some possible tools for your podcast site.

The first is the use of video. You can find the video on the CLIP Podcast site. This one is a video that my husband and I did with our three year old just for fun. I hope it gives you an idea of how you can easily create short videos as one way to show your audience what you are thinking.
The second is spell with Flickr which I really like. You can go on the site and create all sorts of words using letters taken from different places. So you can decide on what letters work together and talk about how your audience might react to different combinations of letters.
The third is Artroom. Itacirc;euro;trade;s on the website for a famous gallery in England, the Saatchi Gallery, where kids can make display art online. You could create some artwork for your audit trail or for your podcast site using the Artroom.
So there are some ideas for you! Enjoy and Iacirc;euro;trade;ll see you soon.

Welcome to show# 30 of the CLIP Podcast. Today I have for you the second half of a conversation with Heather Jopling author of wonderful books on same sex parents and alternative lifestyles, specifically Ryan's Mom is Tall, Monicka's Papa is Tall, and The Not So Only Child. Today my conversation with Heather focuses on getting these books into the classroom and creating a dialogue regarding the issues raised in the books.

One of the topics Heather and I talked about had to do with children's books and educational settings, specifically, the classroom. In this first segment Heather shares insights on why books like The Not So Only Child belong in the classroom.

In this final segment Heather talks specifically about The Not So Only Child. What I like most about her comments is the perspective on diversity from which she speaks.

Transcript for Acts Of Kindness And Social Action_CLIP 23
Intro
Hello Everyone. You are listening to show 23 of the CLIP podcast which I would like to dedicate to my friends and colleagues in Hawaii especially those who are connected with Kamehameha Schools. Congratulations again on a favorable court decision regarding the John Doe lawsuit.
Tonightacirc;euro;trade;s show focuses on a powerful text set on acts of kindness and social action submitted by Andrea Ross of Just One More Book, a wonderful podcast and resource on childrenacirc;euro;trade;s books. The idea for the show resulted from a comment by Andrea on a previous clip episode after which time I encouraged her to send me audio expanding on her thoughts. Iacirc;euro;trade;m so pleased she agreed to do the show and I know you will truly enjoy what she has to say as much as I have. I thought it was especially appropriate as we enter the holiday season.

Audio from Andrea Ross
This is Andrea Ross, devoted CLIP listener and one of the children's book fanatics behind the Just One More Book!! Podcast.
More often than not, Vivian's CLIP episodes leave me buzzing with ideas, inspiration and feeling a bit like I've fallen out in the middle of a lively, engaging conversation. And... more often than not... the result is a long and rambling email to Vivian from me, filling her in on all the thoughts and ideas her show has brought up for me.
A few weeks ago, Vivian decided to cure me of this post-CLIP rambling email habit by suggesting that I put some of those thoughts into a segment for her show. This is my attempt to do that. I think I'm cured.
In CLIP Episode 16, entitled "Acts of Courage and Acts of Kindness", Vivian presented A multi-media text set of children's books and audio exploring the idea that children can make improvements in the world.
This inspiring show brought to mind two fabulous books and two organizations that can help children see the power and possibility of relatively small, tangible gestures.
Beatrice's Goat, written by Page McBrier and Illustrated by Lori Lohstoeter, tells the true story of a 9 year old Ugandan girl whose life is changed for the better by the gift of a goat. This gorgeous book, with its warm, earthy illustrations and simple narration effectively illustrates how the education, income and nourishment provided by the goat slowly and steadily improves the health and wellbeing of the entire family -- and eventually ripples outward to neighbouring families. The story is accompanied by a description of the Heifer Organization:
Instead of providing hungry families with a temporary source of food, Heifer International provides a "living loan" of an animal and training in animal care. Each family in turn passes these gifts to another family in need, creating a chain of hope that lifts entire communities.
The second book on this goat-giving theme is "The Goat Lady", by Jane Bregoli. What an amazing book. What an amazing story. Filled with gorgeous grey/blue paintings and a striking example of the power of understanding, this book is too great a masterpiece to do justice here. The r...

Intro
Aloha. You are listening to show 22 of the CLIP podcast. Tonightacirc;euro;trade;s show is the final installation of a three part series, which was recorded on the beautiful island of Hawaii, at the International Reading Associationacirc;euro;trade;s Regional Conference which was held there a few weeks ago. In Todayacirc;euro;trade;s show I build on a text set I had started in a previous show as well as talk about Podcasting in general. If you havenacirc;euro;trade;t heard the previous two installations I would urge you to at least listen to Show# 21 prior to listening to tonightacirc;euro;trade;s show.
And as the sun sets on my memorable and heart warming experience in Hawaii, I urge you to please visit my blog post regarding supporting Kamehameha Schools.
One thing I hope you can take away from the three part series is the need to always ask ourselves why weacirc;euro;trade;re doing what weacirc;euro;trade;re doing and what literacies are produced through our teaching, as educators, parents, and caregivers, as well as consider how those literacies play out in the real world.
Consequently, we need to think about how our teaching positions our students and children , in particular ways along with understanding the position from which we teach.
Liana Honda Station ID/ Midtro
When this incident took place there werenacirc;euro;trade;t many books available that would support the work we were doing. So I relied primarily on books that created space for talking about issues of social justice, fairness and equity. Nowadays however there are so many wonderful books that can be used to create space for talking about the issues raised by my students in the French CafAtilde;copy; story.
Iacirc;euro;trade;m thinking here of books like Si Se Puede, Yes We Can, a bilingual book about the justice for janitors strike in LA as told from the perspective of a young boy whose mother becomes a leader of the strike or
The Streets are Free by Kurusa and Monika Doppert which is a story based on the experience of children in a low income neighborhood in Venezuela who fought for the right to turn an empty lot into a playground. So itacirc;euro;trade;s about organizing to defend your rights.
Another book is Selavi, Thatacirc;euro;trade;s Life which is a true story of Selavi, a street child in Haiti who shares food and a place to sleep with other street children who eventually contributes to opening a home for children and starting Radyo Timoun, Childrenacirc;euro;trade;s Radio, a station run by and for children, which, until March of 2004, was still in operation.
At Radyo Timoun, the questions and suggestions of children were broadcast for all to hear. In March, 2004, however, the station was destroyed in the midst of the incredible unrest in Haiti.
An article appeared in yesterdayacirc;euro;trade;s USA Today that would fit nicely with this text set.
Another text that would be a wonderful fit with this already powerful text set is a song performed by a group of Kindergarten to Grade Six children at Se...

Negotiating Social Action Projects_CLIP21
Partial Transcript
Hello Everyone. You are listening to show 21 of the CLIP podcast. Tonightacirc;euro;trade;s show is part two of a three part series, which was recorded on the beautiful island of Hawaii, at the International Reading Associationacirc;euro;trade;s Regional Conference which was held there two weeks ago.
I focused my talk on particular critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. In todayacirc;euro;trade;s segment you will hear me talking about the second move, which I refer to as Negotiating Spaces for Critical Literacy. Some of you may have heard me share this story in show number 1.
My experience in presenting this work has sometimes been met with skepticism regarding whether or not my students really were able to participate in projects dealing with such deep and often difficult social issues. So today, what I will do is take you on brief journey to familiarize you with some of the sights and sounds of the classroom.
The School Site
The school was located in a very diverse, multi ethnic, middle class community just outside Metropolitan Toronto in Ontario, Canada. Although the socio economic context has been designated acirc;euro;tilde;middle classacirc;euro;trade;, this was not straightforward. Within this area, there were homes occupied by more than one family. The class was a half -day pre school group that met from 8.45am acirc;euro;ldquo; 11.15am, M-F.
Physical Environment and Resources
-The physical space of the classroom was flexible enough to incorporate changes and provide room for innovation and improvisation.
-A wide range of rich resources such as videos, news articles, music, books, everyday texts, art posters and web sites were available. Along with materials needed to support the study of the different issues that interested the class.
-Observation was an important feature of practice, as it enabled me to build on childrenacirc;euro;trade;s interests in important and reflective ways.
-The carefully constructed environment offered children physical, social, emotional and cognitive spaces in which to engage in their critical projects and, to become co-researchers and participants in collaborative activities.
The Curriculum
The curriculum emerged in an organic way from the cultural and social practices in which my students and I engaged.
Classroom practice was the result of a complex dynamic of theorized practice, each one informing the other. Critical literacy theories impacted approaches to teaching, but the effects of these approaches and the issues raised in practice also affected the theories and understanding of them. The curriculum was not free from curricular mandates and the threat of standardized testing. The School Board dictated specific programs to follow. As the classroom teacher, I made sure that I understood what was expected of me through the mandated curriculum in order to demonstrate to parents, colleagues and administrators that our negotiated curriculum surp...

From Kid-watching to Podcasting _ CLIP20 Transcript
Aloha! Welcome to show 20 of the CLIP podcast. Although I am no longer in Hawaii the audio for todayacirc;euro;trade;s show was recorded at the International Reading Associationacirc;euro;trade;s Regional Conference which was held there last week.
Before going any further I first want to say from the bottom of my heart , mahalo to my Hawaiian colleagues and friends especially Liana Honda, JoAnn Wong-Kam, Anna Sumida, Alice Kimura, Joyce Ahuna-Ka'ai'ai, Meleanna Meyer, Kathy Wurdem, Avis Masuda, and Malia Chong. This show is dedicated to you! I left Hawaii in awe of your passion, and commitment to stand up for the rights of the children with whom you work and the communities in which you live. You are amazing, and you are inspiring and I am thrilled to have, together with you, created a space for us to carry on the much needed conversations that we started.
Todayacirc;euro;trade;s show is part one of a three part series of my presentation at the Regional Conference in Hawaii. I decided to do this in three parts for ease of downloading as well as to give you a bit of breather between sections. This also makes it possible for me to add some editorial bits.
In a nutshell, I focused my talk on particular critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. In todayacirc;euro;trade;s segment you will hear me talking about the first move, which I refer to as Kid-watching a term popularized, I believe by Yetta Goodman.

From Kid-watching To Podcasting:
Negotiating Critical Literacies in School Settings
My plan for today is to create an opportunity for you to think about critical literacy as it is talked about and practiced in different spaces and places. To do this Iacirc;euro;trade;ve organized my talk using what I consider to be critical moves in my life as a literacy educator. By critical moves, I mean those moments in time that represent particular shifts in my teaching or practice. The three moves in particular that I will use to guide my talk are kid-watching, negotiating, and Podcasting.
In particular I will share two stories of life in a classroom and a podcast that represent for me the critical moves I mentioned earlier.
Kid-watching as a Critical Move
The first story took place, in fall 1986, when I was assigned, my first group of students, a grade one class of 29 children. That was when I met six-year-old Kevin. Little did I know how Kevin would impact my life as an educator. Why? Because of an incident ,that happened...

CLIP #16
Intro
Welcome to CLIP 16 everyone. I'm going to play around with the order of things today so rather than doing acknowledgements and thank you's up front I'll wait till later and jump right into the show. Let me know what you think of this format.
Before I get going though I want to extend a big hello to member of the Toronto Reading Council and folks from OISE with whom I had a wonderful time talking about critical literacy this past weekend.
Today, I pick up on last week's show and the topic of taking action to change things that are problematic in our communities and beyond. I couldn't get the voices of the children from Selsted Primary out of my head and so spent a number of days imagining what other texts might work nicely with the Save Our School song. So, what I have done is to put together a multi-media text set of children's books and audio that focus on acts of courage and acts of kindness. I really do believe that in combination, the texts I will share work very well together to enrich and inform discussions and work on the issue of taking action to change inequitable ways of being.

Already, you know one piece I would include in today's multi-modal text set is the Save Our School song which as I mentioned is a terrific demonstration of the power of music to shape political and social experiencel. So imagine, then combining this song with a book like Si Se Puede, Yes We Can, a bilingual book about the justice for janitors strike in LA as told from the perspective of a young boy whose mother becomes a leader of the strike. Another book that would be a powerful addition would be The Streets are Free by Kurusa and Monika Doppert which is a story based on the experience of children in a low income neighborhood in Venezuela who fought for the right to turn an empty lot into a playground. So itacirc;euro;trade;s about organizing to defend your rights. Another book is Selavi, That's Life which is a true story of Selavi, a street child...

Save Our School - Transcript CLIP 15
I was doing a search for songs having to do with children and youth on the Podsafe music network when I came across the song "Save Our School". Now given that so much of my focus on this show has been on issues of social justice and equity you can imagine how intrigued I was with the title of the song. So I downloaded it and to my surprise and delight, through my speakers came the voices of children singing. Wow acirc;euro;ldquo; I decided then and there to put aside the show I was currently working on and instead focus this show, #15, on the children and their song.
But first I want to thank Jeff Wood, Shannon Blaney, Wayne Serebrin, Yvonne Siu Runyan and Celia Oyler, for commenting on the show, contacting me regarding the show, or pinning my frappr map. And I also want to thank Allyn Kurin for the station id. Finally, congratulations to Jeff Wood and Wayne Serebrin for being the first two to respond to the Book giveaway. Jeff and Wayne, a copy of Getting Beyond I like the Book is on its way to you!

The setting is a small rural community in South-East Kent, where several generations of some local families have attended Selsted Primary School. The school has a student body of approximately 70 Reception or Kindergarten to Year 6 or Sixth Grade students.
Early in the summer of 2006, Selsted became one of 12 schools earmarked for closure because of falling pupil numbers in the county. In response The Save Selsted Action Group was formed. As one form of action, a song was written to protest the proposed closure. With lyrics like "Don't close our school, it's been here for many years, my mum and dad both came here too, its closure will mean tears." the children, their parents, teachers and with the help of Steve Howard who produced the song, were able to use music to take stand and send their message out into the world. Not only did Steve act as producer, he also created an indiestore account with 7 Digital to showcase the song where it was and still is available for download for a mere 99p.
Hearing of the Selsted plight, Jersey Todd from the Jersey Toddshow in the US, quickly contacted other podcasters, including Adam Curry, the US Podfather and soon Save Our School was being downloaded across the nation and around the world through 7 Digital and the Podsafe Music Network in the US.
A recent blog entry from the school reads "To all the podcasters around the world that have taken our small rural school around the world - thanks." They of course also thanked over and over again all of the folks around the globe who helped in some way.
When you hear this song, you too will understand what made people want to reach out and help the children of Selsted School. Here now is Save Our School.

Have you heard of Handy Manny?
Gary Marsh, President, of Disney Channel Worldwide states "Handy Manny is an exciting addition to our preschool programming line-up, offering an authentic multicultural perspective, humor, and valuable messages about friendship, community and working together,". "Led by Wilmer Valderrama , Fez on that 70acirc;euro;trade;s show, it is rich with creativity, heart and intelligence. Preschoolers, parents and caregivers the world over are sure to embrace this unique new series."
Disney claims that "Handy Manny" is designed to infuse preschool viewers with the confidence to take on challenges and try to work them out, most notably interpersonal relationships. Playful and filled with humor and quirky, relatable characters, the episodes reinforce core early-learning concepts while also emphasizing pro-social and emotional themes including getting along with friends and family, helping others, and trying one's best.
Disney further claims that,
"Handy Manny" teaches preschoolers simple Spanish words and phrases by putting them into a real-world context - such as Manny saying "abuelito" when referring to his grandfather. In addition, the series introduces everyday aspects of Latino culture, including certain holidays and the importance of family. "Handy Manny" will also resonate with young Latino viewers, thanks to its authentic portrayal of culturally-relevant characters and customs.
Now, of course I'm really hoping that this show is able to do all that Disney claims it is capable of doingacirc;euro;brvbar;time will tell. So let's keep tabs on the show and see how it unfolds.
From what I've Googled in each episode someone contacts Manny the Handyman to do some repair work at which time Manny formulates a plan of action and gets to work. While doing this work he apparently relies heavily on his helpers, a bunch of talking tools. There is Pat a bumbling Hammer, Turner a grumpy screwdriver, Felipe an ambitious screwdriver, Dusty who plays the role of the maternal Saw, Stretch a perfectionist tape measure. Then there is Rusty a fearful Wrench, and Squeeze, a curious pair of pliers.
If you or your kids or kids you know happen to watch the show, here are some things I'm wondering...
