It contained a message about a Dropbox folder being shared with me. This was weird because I hadn’t talked to this person in years, and the documents appeared to be important.

1

Let’s proceed with caution…

So right off the bat, Google thinks this is spam. That’s great, except about once a month it false positives and puts something I care about into the spam box. I opened the original message up to see if there was anything interesting…

2

Now we’re getting somewhere! If you can’t tell, this was a huge block of html that was made to look like a real Dropbox email. Except instead of linking you to Dropbox, it linked you to this other site:

3

Whoa! The copyright is even up to date (just kidding—it’s not 2015).

In looking at the dropbox area source code I found this: <div id="canadaprovinces">. A google search on that string brings up this tutorial on how to create an image slider. It’s nice to know these guys Google stuff just like the rest of us when they want to make their first phishing site.

So now I have to pick which service to use to log in. Good thing I still have a Yahoo email account!

4

Beautiful.

I filled out the form. No, I didn’t use real info. After pressing Sign In I was redirected to a corporate website for some company. I couldn’t find any reason why it was dumping me onto this site, and it was unrelated to everything else I saw. Weird.

I tried the other login types. Each one submitted through a different form like “aol.php”. But the Google one was special. It brought me to this page:

5

From there if you put a phone number or email address in and hit submit, it would bring you to that same company website. Super weird.

Although I didn’t fall for this scam, I could easily see how others might fall for it. Stay safe out there and be careful when you fill out login information!

A good song was playing on the radio. Some things had happened that day—although I don’t remember if they were good or bad—but none of that mattered in that moment.

I was feeling good. I was happy. Content. Relaxed. And then I started to think about how this moment, and all its good feelings, would end. I would get home, eat dinner, fall asleep, and wake up to a new day with a whole new set of experiences.

Would they be good? Bad? What about other possibilities? I mean, I could die at any moment. What if I died tomorrow? If I did, then these experiences I am having, good or bad, will end.

At this point, I was no longer feeling content and at peace. I was sad. My thoughts about life and the meaning I attached to it had driven me into thinking about how it will all inevitably end.

And then I realized that what I have—experience itself—is the most precious thing anyone could ever have. The fact that I can take in the world around me and form ideas, opinions, and judgements about it and interact with it, which in turn impacts other people, is incredible.

Most of what I do today won’t matter tomorrow. The projects I complete at work won’t matter in a few months. Years from now, I will likely not remember a single thing I have done today. A century from now pretty much all of us will be dead and forgotten. The Earth will eventually be torn apart and the heat death of the universe will occur.

Those are the facts. And yet, sitting in my car with the radio blaring and the wind blowing past my face, this line of fresh thoughts didn’t phase me. It gave me peace. I can be sad that I will die someday, and being able to experience that feeling is part of something much bigger than myself or my fleeting moment in time.

The so-called “vertical video syndrome” is seen as a problem with cellphone users who are infected by it. I want to clear up a few things about the issue, why it’s probably not a problem (most of the time), and when it’s actually better to record videos in a vertical frame.

“Content is horizontal! You’re missing out on the action happening out of frame when recording in portrait.”

Not necessarily. Check out this video of a squirrel bomb diving a baseball dugout during a game.

Note the buildup and tension. The whole effect would be lost if this video was recorded in landscape and we could only see one bit of the picture. Instead, we are able to see the sky, squirrel, players out on the field, and parts of the crowd, all at the same time.

The reason we don’t see very many vertical videos like this is because up until a few years ago, everything was viewed in a landscape orientation. Now, companies like Snapchat are paying big money for vertical format ads, and seeing a 9x increase in completed views. And Youtube updated their app to better support portrait video playback. All because they took note of how people were using their devices, consuming content, and reacting to it.

“Videos are meant to be taken in landscape! Our eyes are designed to view things in a wide field of view.”

Are we meant to watch millions of tiny light bulbs flash in order? Just because our eyes are placed horizontally on our face doesn’t mean we are supposed to watch things in only a horizontal fashion.

The fact that a video can take up a larger field of view in landscape doesn’t make it a better format. There are many situations where a video that takes up less of your view could be advantageous. And even then, the distance we hold a phone from our eyes is far enough away so that we don’t have to move our eyes more than if we were watching something in a landscape orientation.

“Vertical videos look bad on my laptop. The black bars on each side of the video is a huge waste of space.”

Maybe the video wasn’t meant to be viewed on a larger device? With the advent of mobile video sharing apps like Periscope, Snapchat, and many others, the odds of someone looking at a mobile-recorded video on a desktop computer are getting smaller.

Imagine a world where you had to constantly rotate your phone back and forth every time you swiped to a new video, viewed it, and gave a reaction. Vertical videos allow for a more seamless user experience in social apps.

Sure, there are situations where recording in landscape makes sense and it would be stupid to record vertically. But this isn’t a rule that should be followed everywhere. If you are a content creator, be conscious of how your videos get viewed. If you are an app developer, understand your audience and how they use their devices.

And the next time you go to record a video on your phone, ask yourself: “Is the content I’m about to capture better framed in a vertical or horizontal video? What device or screen do I think the video will be viewed on? Will I have to deal with some jerk telling me to turn my phone as soon as I press record?”

Every once in a while I get an idea that sticks with me until I code it up. The latest: What if I took a webcam feed and used it as a realtime mask over a second, looping video?

So, one afternoon I decided to code up a working example of this using your webcam feed as the mask over a looping video.

Check it out! (Chrome only)

Note: It works best if you have a bright light or background behind you. Feel free to rip the code apart if that’s your sort of thing.

You can find some more experiments of mine on my site’s labs folder.

As a result, it can be a challenge to navigate this dangerous terrain without putting at risk your deepest held beliefs about politics, religion, culture, the nature of reality, and so on.

What I offer is some advice on how to stay firm in your beliefs when facing other people in the world we, for better or worse, all share.

Find a like-minded group

Associate with other people who hold to the same set of beliefs as you do. This leads to an overall better quality of life for all involved and a strong foundation for future generations born into the group.

Reinforce your beliefs

When something happens in the world, interpret the facts in such a way as to further support your previously held views of the world around you. Ignore conflicting evidence, or, better yet, reframe the story into being unbelievable or worthy of question.

Be offended

Offense is a strong emotion and should be used whenever possible when dealing with people who argue against you and your beliefs from a critical view. It’s not your fault they don’t understand your position.

No two arguments are the same

When someone twists your own argument by replacing your situation with a different one, they are trying to deceive you. Do not let them dazzle you with illusory references to changed or flipped circumstances.

Take constructive advice lightly

If someone gives you critical advice, do not take that information to heart. They may think they know your personal disposition, but they can’t experience life from your point of view and as such have no business telling you what you ought to believe or how to do things.

Faith solves all woes

Faith is a virtue—use it as such. When conflict arises and your beliefs are put into question, your faith will always be there to dissolve any tension. We can’t know everything, but faith will always offer us the comfort to know that everything will be good in the end.

Never question core beliefs

Never, ever, question your deepest held beliefs about the world around you. These core truths are what ground you in reality and what you know to be true. To question them could put at risk everything you know to be true as a result. Bad things will happen.

UI Elements sometimes overlap

2014-11-12 20.43.10

Text strings appear in Spanish

2014-11-15 21.23.29

This has only happened once, but it made me laugh (jajaja?)

Game crash on map load

Number of players in match exceeds playlist limit

I have played multiple games where the total number of players is higher than what the playlist allows for. I have played a 7v6 game in the Team Slayer playlist, which seemed to run fine even though the BTB playlist only allows for 12 players.

Uneven teams

2014-11-16 15.08.17

This one happens a lot. Game starts as 3v7, or 3v5, or any unfair combination of that variety. Kind of fun when you’re on the team with more players, but depressing if you’re not.

“Rogue” teams

I only saw this happen the first or second day of release, but sometimes players would be put on a third team even though the playlist is for two teams only.

Party telephone game

I have joined a party of three where I could only hear one person, he could hear both of us, but the third guy couldn’t hear me talk. Funny but kind of frustrating!

Rank resets(?)

I know they have been resetting the rankings in the H2A playlist, but I have seen my rank go down to 1, then go back up to what I had it at, then in the next game go back to 1. Make up your mind game!

Joining incorrect party

This has only happened once, but I went to join my friend in his party and I got put into some random person’s party. Halo Roulette?

But why?

Sometimes I think I would prefer to tinker something to perfection in solitude rather than share something that’s partially broken. However, another part of me sees self-promotion as dirty, a cheap trick for getting traffic to your site, annoying, and overall a waste of time.

Is it possible to share your work in the open without being a jerk about it? I don’t know the answers to these questions for sure, but what follows is my experience so far with sharing Payoff.io with a larger audience online.

Self-promotion…with a twist

For a few months leading up to July 23rd, 2014, my debt calculator, Payoff.io, had been online. I originally wrote it in January that same year on a weekend. I thought it worked well, accomplished what I originally set out for it to do, and worked better than other sites.

I rarely got any visits to it. I think in the entire month leading up to sharing it on Reddit it got about 20 visits that weren’t me. It was a little discouraging because I found the site helpful and I thought others would too, but I had no way to get people to try it.

So, on July 23rd, while waiting for my train from Chicago to get me home, I made a post on the r/personalfinance community about my site. I didn’t want to just promote the site, so I made a self post and asked for feedback on how to make it better.

Posting stuff is very hit and miss on sites like Reddit and Hacker News. In fact, I had already made a Show-HN post a few weeks before with barely any hits or comments.

I knew that there was a good chance I would get a few hits, maybe a few helpful comments, and that would be it.

Fortunately, the response was great! I got well over 100 comments on how the site could be improved upon. I believe I received lots of attention because I phrased my submission as asking for ideas on making it better, rather than simply providing a link to the site. I also think it helped that I replied to almost every comment.

Since then I have been updating the site whenever I have free time. Was it wrong for me to ask for advice while simultaneously diverting a ton of traffic to my pet project? I’m still not sure. However, the feedback I got was excellent, so I know it was worth it, at least for me.

The splash page of the future?

This emerging design trend can be characterized by text overlaid on huge faded imagery or massive blocks of a site’s latest and greatest content, all of which appears before the site’s main navigation.

I’m calling this recent design trend above the nav.
