This Work Your Way episode takes place in the outer London village of Lewes, where we talk with the mind bending sculptural artist Sophie De Oliveira Barata. Sophie creates hyper realistic prosthetics for everyday use and hyper-futuristic alternative limbs for amputees, with a creative portfolio that combines functional sculpture and an activism which reframes disability and identity. Exhibiting and speaking around the world and with a huge online following, Sophie expands her creative process by living in ways that creates flexibility and freedom in her routine and environment and in turn her creative thinking process. Sophie does this while coparenting her 2 young kids with her former partner. A story that goes to show that working your way can also bring expansion to those you take along for the ride.

In my 20s my career was going gang busters. Where many of my friends were still working out what they wanted to do and who they wanted to be I was making films, touring with my band, playing festivals, consulting on arts projects, presenting at conferences and generally obsessively following my very ambitious and passionate working nature. By my early 30s I had 2 small kids and 3 step kids and my career and creativity was limping along in last place compared to the role of motherhood.
Being a mum cost me a lot career wise and financially but it’s a price I consciously chose to pay. Today is my final time volunteering on the running carnival cake stall. As my youngest winds up his primary schooling, I’m winding up 15 years of being heavily involved in the early childhoods of my boys, their preschools and schools, volunteering and connecting to a vast and wonderful community of families I’ve met during this season of my life.
As a woman leaping into midlife with total abandon and excitement this is a bittersweet time in my mothering. I’m relishing the lasts and welcoming in the freedoms that come with the heartbreaking relief of being ditched by tween and teenage boys for their mates (in the wake of my mortifying uncoolness). I am finally able to consolidate my careers that I have chosen to date. One of them my role as a very committed mum.
This second career was the hardest by miles but one I’m so glad I chose to prioritise. Memories like this are just as important as memories of my cranking 20s career. And what I have learnt through this process is just as vital in informing the next chapter of how I contribute to the world through my coaching and consulting work.
No regrets on this life choice. No regrets at all.

Regional creatives this one is for you! The regions are great for developing new creative ideas and establishing your practice. If you are an established artist who creates work that is for a regional market or regional tourist market, yee hah you get to work and sell in the same market. BUT if you make work that has national or global appeal you need to think OUTSIDE of the regions and understand how who that market is and how to connect with them.

Grounded spirituality in business part 2.
As humans we have material, financial, relational, physical and physiological needs. As business owners we need to be across the practical realities of what does and doesn’t work to generate results. You can be a deeply spiritual human doing spiritual, creative and purpose fuelled work in a way that is also deeply practical and grounded into earthly reality. More to come I’m sure on this topic! High achiever not achieving? If you are a high achieving doer and you feel overwhelmed and like you’re getting nowhere. If you’re working hard and not getting the results you want. If you’re working even harder to get the results and it’s still not working. Then the solution is going to feel very very uncomfortable and counter intuitive. You will need to press a pause on everything and allow yourself to zoom out and get perspective and to zoom into your self and get connected. Then we can find simpler, aligned, strategic solutions to move you forward with greater ease and better results. PS if you are a workaholic or perfectionist you will probably need to do some really deep work (as in with a therapist) to allow yourself that space to breathe and reevaluate.

Grounded spirituality – part 1
I am a big fan of grounded spirituality. Spiritual connection and experiences that help us to ground down into the very practical and tangible everyday life in this earthly experience. Spirituality is embedded and interwoven into the work that I’m doing on many levels as a tool to help us ground down with a sense of something greater than ourselves supporting the process. A very feet-on-the-ground version of spirituality.
