This month’s PS+ freebies aren’t brand new, but they’re all recent games and good to great with Tony Hawk, the latest Yakuza, and Little Nightmares.

Happy gaming

A lot has been made of the shift from PS+ being a general subscription, to a tiered system. And yes, there are some big changes there, that do impact subscribers across the boards.

But be that as it may, the base level of Plus is still something worth your time, even if you’re not into multiplayer gaming. Take this month for example, as it’s pretty well stacked with a trio of good to great titles.

Leading off is Activision’s excellent Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 remake from a few summers ago. This awesome floor-up recreation of the original titles brought back more than good memories when it arrived back in 2020, as it plays flawlessly, and is loaded with stuff to do. Nostalgia? Yes, but it’s got more than enough to shake off the ‘retro’ tag.

Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 | PS4, PS5

Check out our review of Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 and 2 on the Xbox here.

From there, things get a little scary with Little Nightmares. While it would have been nice to get the game’s sequel, which is way more current launching last year, 2017’s creepfest is still worth your time if you’ve yet to play.

Little Nightmares | PS4

Check out our review of Little Nightmares on the Xbox here.

And now for something completely different! Yakuza: Like a Dragon rounds out the month’s offerings, and brings the most recent of the sometimes-silly, crime-fueled, open-world titles to Plus subscribers.

Yakuza: Like a Dragon | PS4, PS5

All of the above should be available on your platform of choice (PS4 or PS5) from today, August 2nd, 2022.

Another slow month. We actually skipped this feature in March because of a lock of games to report on, but April is set to be another drag for those looking for new gaming experiences. There is only one really big game release to talk about, and it’s the PS4’s God of War.

War on boredom

This year’s not been quite as exciting as I would have hoped. There was Far Cry 5, Kirby Star Allies, and a few other things, but not anywhere near enough for me. And honestly, nothing to catch my attention. Well, maybe Burnout, but that was about it.

Here we are in April though, and it’s more of the same, with one exception. The first real “big” game of the year arrives this month with God of War on the PS4. Not that GOW is without its detractors (I’m one of them), but it’s a legit big name in the gaming universe and it’s been hotly anticipated since its announcement.

So this is the high-water mark for the year thus far. I’d include the aforementioned Far Cry 5 in that statement, but doesn’t seem to have made much of an impact. Other than some critical acclaim, I haven’t really heard anyone talking about it, and I’m not sure what kind of numbers it’s done at retail. God of War though, should be a big seller.

Other than Kratos’ latest though, there ain’t much this month outside of niche-y stuff. And I’m including the Nintendo Labo in that by the way. I still can’t see what the excitement is with folding cardboard for gimmicky motion-play.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 has an official Western release date. Players will return to the city of Kamurocho on August 28th, 2018.

Check out Yakuza Kiwami 2‘s official trailer from Sony’s YouTube channel below.

Yakuza Kiwami 2 is a complete remake of 2006’s Yakuza 2 in the Dragon game engine.

The story focuses on fan-favorite Kazuma Kiryu after the fallout of the first Yakuza game. When Kiryu’s attempt to build a life out of the ruthless Tojo Clan’s shadow falls apart, he returns to Kamurocho after a high-ranking clan member falls to a rival organization. Intent on discovering who’s behind the latest conflict in his city. Kiryu discovers a tale of intrigue and ambition and must prevent an all-out war between the Tojo and Omi Yakuza families.

The brutal open-world beat-em-up is a popular series back in Japan. The nation sold the bulk of the series’ 10.5 million lifetime sales. The Yakuza series has enjoyed a niche following here in the West for the past decade. But shifting marketing strategy from SEGA gave the series a massive Western push in January 2017. Likewise, the series attained greater market appeal with the Western release of Yakuza 0 in January 2017. Yakuza 0 released to critical acclaim and sold over half a million copies the first month after its Western release. The game was many newcomers first foray into the quirky open-world series. In light of its Western success, SEGA appears driven to popularize the series in the West. With the team’s release of the first Yakuza Kiwami in the August of 2017, it’s clear they’re confident in having the series succeed to its newly inducted Western audience.

Also, Yakuza 6, the newest release for the Yakuza franchise, drops this Tuesday, March 20th.

Yakuza Kiwami 2’s release this August marks the series’ fourth Western release in a two-year span.

A PSN leak has revealed the second game in the “Yakuza” series will also receive an HD remake in the near future.

The Facts

Revealed in a post to Neogaf, a remake of “Yakuza 2” was listed on Taiwan’s Playstation Store with a December 2017 release window. In “Yakuza 2,” players return to the role of Kazuma Kiryu following the events of the first game. With an all out war looming between the Tojo and Omi families, Kiryu must travel from Kamurocho to Sotenbori to broker a peace. This is easier said then done however, with rival gang members on his tail and a crime from his father’s past set to catch up with him at any moment.

In the listing, the game was touted as utilizing the same engine as Yakuza 6. The post has since been taken down.

The “Yakuza” series has seen a bevy of releases and remasters in the past year, with “Yakuza 0” releasing in January to high acclaim for its combat system and variety of gameplay. “Yakuza Kiwami,” a full remake of the original game, is set for release in North America on Aug. 29 for the Playstation 4, while “Yakuza 6” is set to come out early next year.

Author’s Take

It’s good to see more entries in the “Yakuza” series getting remasters, but maybe Sega should consider slowing it down. The series already has two titles marked for release in the next six months, and adding another one on top of that could hurt the sales numbers of one or all of them. In addition, the reviews for “Yakuza Kiwami” have consistently brought up how the remake fails to address dated design flaws that could and would bring down “Yakuza 2” as well, and a release at the end of this year doesn’t exactly show they stopped to take the time to fix them. The post was taken down though, so hopefully they’re already on track to make some changes.

North American fans of the Yakuza series can dive back into the original game this August with the release of Yakuza Kiwami on PS4.

The Facts

On April 12, Sega America announced that Yakuza Kiwami would be released in North America on August 29. The announcement was accompanied by an english subtitled story trailer.

Originally released January 21, 2017 in Japan, the game is a full remake of the original Yakuza game for PS2 with completely recreated graphics, capable of running at 1080p and at 60 fps. It will retain the Japanese language audio from the first game, which was unavailable in the original game’s western release. The game will also boast an improved combat system and the “Majima Everywhere” system, wherein series mainstay character Hiro Majima will now appear much more often throughout the story. Day one editions of the game will also come in an exclusive steel case while supplies last.

Author’s Take

It’s awesome to see Sega America continue to support the Yakuza series and its North American supporters. For long time fans or anyone who’s curiosity was peaked by the recently released prequel Yakuza 0, this may be the best way to experience the game that started it all.

Conspiracy, action, and an open world set in 1980’s Japan. Welcome to Yakuza 0.

Yakuza 0 is an open-world game set in rad 1980’s Japan at the boom of its economic reconstruction. The Japan in Yakuza 0 is one that lives in excess. It’s packed with yuppies who have so much money that they don’t know how to spend them all. Well, that is until organized crime gets to them with a conspiracy that spans two Japanese cities! Sound interesting? Well, read my review and find out if it’s worth it! (Spoiler: IT IS.)

Gameplay

If you’ve played Yakuza in the past, then rest assured that everything that you love the game is back. The twist however, is that some things are different- but in a good way! A lot of the quirky things that people have come to love about Yakuza return here. And I mean stuff like the various mini-games and relationship building with people.

And actually, before we talk about the main game, I’d like to talk about those mini-games. See, I’ve spent about 80 hours on Yakuza 0. And at least 10 hours in there were spent on rushing to finish the story.

I’ve been playing the mini-games since then. Yep. Yakuza does such a good job in immersing you in the 80s that you actually start to believe that you’re in the game. That goes a long way towards experiencing Kiryu and Goro’s journey for yourself.

That’s probably a good reason why I enjoy the mini-games a lot.

Some of the mini-games include a batting center, disco and bowling! There’s a lot more though. Not the least of which is a Sega arcade that allows you to play some of Sega’s classic arcade games. My favorite however, are the disco mini-games. I love Yakuza’s soundtrack and their faux 80’s songs are definitely fun to groove to. You know, if you like that sort of thing.

It is also worth nothing that some side-missions can only be unlocked through progressing through the various mini-games so do bear that in mind.

Speaking of side-missions, Yakuza 0 has a ton of them scattered around the venues of the game. Remember when I said that the world feels like its alive? It helps that most of the side-quests can only be activated when you walk past various events as you go around town.

One of my favorite side-missions is convincing a school girl to stop her Burusera ring. Burusera is quite simply the act of selling used underwear to the sort of people that like them. Of course, these people are depraved individuals so what happens next involves a lot of fighting and of course, Kiryu imparting an important lesson to the offending party.

Truth be told, majority of the time you don’t really even feel like a gangster because Kiryu is such a good guy that I just want to actually meet him and buy him a beer. That’s how bro he is.

Speaking of which, there are two playable characters namely Kiryu and Goro.

Longtime Yakuza players will definitely be excited to play as these two legendary figures in their younger years. The main difference between them lies in their fighting styles, which is an important component of Yakuza 0.

Kiryu is more of a brawler while Goro is a cerebral fighter. Both of them have access to 3 fighting styles with Kiryu having a balanced brawler, a power reliant beast mode and a technical rush fighting style which is essentially boxing. I will refrain from talking about Goro’s fighting style, because it might be a spoiler but it’s pretty similar to what he has in the future games.

Anyway, Yakuza 0’s appeal lies in its ability to convincingly portray a 1980s Japan that’s swimming in excess. The world is so alive that I sometimes lose myself whenever I run around doing errands for various shady people – and that’s a good thing.

Yakuza’s fighting system is simple and it will be sufficiently discussed in the many tutorials in the game, but I can guarantee that it’s fairly simple to pick up.

Sounds and Storyline

The storyline is fairly standard Yakuza as it centers around Kiryu who wants nothing but to become a respected member of Tokyo’s underworld. However he’s such a good guy that he’s pretty much better off as a Policeman or something.

But whatever he is, he definitely has a heart of gold – which leads him to be manipulated by the people around him. Goro on the other hand is on a journey for redemption. That’s all I’ll say but while Kiryu and Goro start out on opposite sides of the map, their journey will bring them together as they uncover the conspiracy that ties the both of them together.

Anyway, the best part about Yakuza is that, while there is a central story in play, it’s worth noting that the people around Kiryu and Goro have lives of their own. This is all realistically portrayed by Yakuza’s unique side missions. I can talk about how wonderful it is for hours, but it’s best to simply experience it for yourself.

And I have to mention that the music and voice acting is all top-notch! Yakuza 0 has an all-star cast of Japanese talents that even people who prefer dubs would be happy with. The music is quintessentially 1980s Japan and it helps shape the atmosphere that immersed me in the game for hours.

Fans of the Yakuza series such as myself are set to be disappointed, as the fifth game in the series will not be getting a localised version here in the west.

Creator of the Yakuza series, Toshihiro Nagoshi, had the following to say about a western release in an interview with Edge  “We don’t have a plan for that at the moment. The Yakuza Studio team is a fixed size, and we have to choose between forging ahead with the next game or localising the one that just came out. This time the size of the game was so large, so rather than localising that game we chose to focus our manpower on the new game. But we get asked about it a lot. We get lots of complaints!”

The new game he was referring to is Yakuza Isshin, a spin-off title, which is due to be a launch title on the PS4 in Japan and will be released alongside a PS3 version supporting Vita Crossplay. Set in the Meiji era, the game is set to feature the cast of the yakuza series re-cast as famous samurai from that particular era.

I personally feel somewhat disappointed after hearing this, especially as someone that has played through the whole series, from the first one on the PS2, all the way to Yakuza 4 on the PS3, and I enjoyed all of them. After the sadness of seeing Shenmue end prematurely, the Yakuza series filled that void and felt like a spiritual successor. I can only hope that one day it will get a western release.
