In light of the platform we're building, I'm going over some of the a speech given at a meeting of the Internet Society's New York branch on Feb 5, 2010, entitled: "

Design. Perpetually celebrated and criticized, it supports our sense of style and function. When charged with conceiving of a new design, we are guided by a list of rational requirements - the design must accomplish A, B & C. But the process of design is far from rational. Whether creating or engaging with a design, it is our unique personal lived experiences, be they mindful or latent, that determins the outcome of one's engagement, be it positive or negative, with a design.

The Archive is Everything

Archinodes is having daily chats about the perfect archive; how it would host and display collections, manage and facilitate a discussion around its contents, and how this entire process would be made visible and integral to the concept of archiving. The archive for us remains the central theme of our creative endevours.

We're currently brainstorming ways to rethink and repurpose the archive online -- a move toward collaboration and community...

Responding to People

There are plenty of ways to tell a story, but through each means there is a consciousness about who will be listening. The trick is to figure out how to expand that consciousness beyond just the storyteller.

Responding to Technology

Simply put, responsive design for the web involves writing CSS so that the elements on the page are displayed differently depending on the size of screen displaying it. Through the use of CSS media queries, the page asks, "what size is the screen?" The layout and styling then responds accordingly to display the page optimized for that size.

While developing a design interface for a new project, we're discovering a real world tension between guiding users towards content while fostering opportunity (and freedom) for exploration. We're charged then with creating an interface that is both compelling and clearly functional. But this ain't Al Gore's old internet anymore. Today's user is more interface savvy and increasingly impatient. Interfaces that obstruct will be circumvented or simply avoided.

Over the past few years, most of the development projects we've worked on have been built on some sort of content management system. When a project comes across our desks, one of the first things we do is take a look at the goals, strategy, and requirements, and begin a discussion of what kind of tools we need to use to best get the job done. Having often used Drupal and Wordpress in the past, this has typically been a discussion of what type of CMS is best suited for the project.
