For Black History Month 2026 BAICE Students will be celebrating and honouring the communities of Black and African scholars who have had significant impact on our own work, knowledge and thought in educational research and practice.

Scholars from Black and African communities are persistently and systematically underrepresented and undercited at all levels of the Western Academy (Asubiaro et al, 2024). Structural epistemic injustices continue to shape how we source knowledge, from which theories are selected in educational research (Chilisa and Ntseane, 2010), which research gets funded and who contributes to creating this knowledge (Grieve and Mitchell, 2020), who gets published (Kang and Medie, 2018) and who is selected for inclusion on our reading lists and university course content.

We therefore invite you to engage with us in honouring the communities of African and Black who have inspired and shaped your work by highlighting their contributions and impact through working with us towards citational justice. Our aim is to bring lesser known, undercited Black and African education scholars to the attention of the BAICE community, both to celebrate and acknowledge their work and the impact it has had on our own, and to share it with others.

We invite submissions that reflect on the personal and academic impact that Black or African scholars have had on your own research and thinking. Pieces should include:

  • A personal reflection (less than 200 words) explaining how scholars’ work has affected your own;
  • A citation link / citation to the piece(s) you would like to share,
  • Your photo (if you would like to share this).

Please submit your reflections and contributions using this Google Form.

We will publish a series of contributions throughout October on our student platform, showcasing a range of scholars and their work. You will also be invited to expand on your reflection in a potential panel discussion and celebration later in the month.

If you would like to discuss an idea before submitting, please reach out by emailing us at students@baice.ac.uk.

The Compare Journal: Editorial Board positions available https://baice.ac.uk/the-compare-journal-editorial-board-positions-available/ Mon, 05 Oct 2026 13:27:01 +0000 https://baice.ac.uk/?p=49133 The British Association for International and Comparative Education (BAICE) is seeking expressions of interest (EOIs) for a range of positions on the Editorial Board of Compare: A Journal of Comparative and International Education.

BAICE publishes Compare in association with Taylor & Francis. It is one of the world’s leading journals in international and comparative education. It publishes research on the role of education in development and the interactions of local, national and global debates about education systems and practices. It seeks analyses of educational discourse, policy and practice, and their implications for teaching, learning and governance. It has an impact factor of 2.1 (2025).

Compare also runs a number of initiatives to promote more inclusive and equitable knowledge production and exchange in the field of comparative and international education. These include a podcast, the Compare Forum and Special Issues, writers’ workshops, and the prestigious Compare Fellowship. Unlike many journals, Compare’s royalties are returned to BAICE to fund the Association’s grants, awards, fellowships, bursaries and to subsidise its conferences and events.

The following roles are available:

Editorial board member (up to three positions)

The Editorial Board act in an advisory capacity for the journal. It meets three times a year (twice online, and once at the annual away day which is in person/hybrid). Board members commit to reviewing four articles a year for Compare and contribute actively towards one of the journal’s initiatives. We welcome expressions of interest from people in the field of comparative and international education, based at academic institutions anywhere in the world, who are at any stage of their academic career. This is a voluntary position with a term of up to three years.

Please submit an EOI (max 1 page) and CV (max 2 pages). Your EOI should reference which of the initiatives you would like to contribute to, and how you would support this. Deadline: 5pm, Friday 30 October.

Book reviews editor (one position)

The Compare Book Reviews Editor Dr Aizuddin Anuar is coming to the end of his term, and we are seeking expressions of interest for his replacement. The Book Reviews Editor manages the book review process for the journal. This includes commissioning reviews (selecting books and assigning them to qualified reviewers) and managing the workflow of reviews for each issue of the journal. The Book Reviews Editor works closely with the Co-Editors, the board, Taylor & Francis, as well as book authors and publishers. We welcome expressions of interest from people in the field of comparative and international education, based at academic institutions anywhere in the world. You could be at any stage of your academic career, but you must have experience of writing book reviews, managing projects and people and working to deadlines. The workload is approximately 3-5 hours per week.  This is a voluntary position with a term of up to three years.

Please submit an EOI (max 1 page) and CV (max 2 pages). Deadline: 5pm, Friday 30 October.

Associate Editor (up to two positions)

This is a new role for the journal. It is designed to be a developmental position for colleagues who have experience working on editorial boards but would value a stepping-stone to a full editorial role. It combines editorial and administrative responsibilities. The Associate Editor will provide a first-stage review of submitted articles and shortlist submissions that are passed to the Co-Editors. They will work closely with the Co-Editors and Chair of the Editorial Board to support intellectual and strategic discussions about the journal’s activities and outputs. Administrative tasks include coordinating the board meetings and keeping a record of these meetings, maintaining the journal’s records, and being the liaison between the journal, the publisher and BAICE. We welcome expressions of interest from people in the field of comparative and international education, based at an institution in the UK. The workload is approximately 6-8 hours per week but our intention is that this would be split across two roles. This role has an honorarium attached which will be allocated according to the number of appointments made. The term is for up to three years.

Please submit an EOI (max 1 page) and CV (max 2 pages). Deadline: 5pm, Friday 16 October.

Co-Editor (one position)

The Compare Editorial Board is led by the Chair (currently Professor Alison Buckler) and six Co-Editors (currently Professor Catherine Montgomery, Professor Julia Paulson, Professor Uma Pradhan, Dr Peter Sutoris, Dr Tingting Yuan and Dr Benjamin Mulvey). Catherine is coming to the end of her term, so we are seeking expressions of interest for her replacement. Co-Editors for Compare operate through a collective leadership model. On a rotating basis, Co-Editors take the lead in reading and screening papers that are sent through from the Associate Editor. They manage the peer review process for these papers including allocating reviewers, assessing and mediating reviews, and responding to authors. Co-Editors have overarching responsibility for the intellectual and strategic evolution of the journal, and each leads on one of the journal’s core initiatives. We welcome expressions of interest from senior academics who have significant experience of contributing to a journal. You can be based anywhere in the world.

The workload is approximately 4-8 hours per week. This role has an honorarium which is currently £3000 per year. The term is for up to three years.

Please submit an EOI (max 2 pages) and CV (max 4 pages). This is an open call and we will accept and process applications at any point up to 5pm, Friday 27 November. If we are able to appoint, we will close the call before the deadline above.

For all positions:

  • Compare board members are expected to be members of BAICE for the duration of their term.
  • Compare board members are expected to attend two online board meetings per year, and the annual away day (in person/hybrid).
  • Travel expenses to attend Compare events within the UK are reimbursed.
  • Full training will be provided.

All expressions of interest should be sent to supportofficer@baice.ac.uk by the deadline indicated for each position. Please state the position in the subject heading of the email.

Shortlisted candidates will be invited to attend an informal interview with members of the Editorial Board and the BAICE Executive Committee.

If you would like more information about the roles and Compare’s editorial process please contact Professor Catherine Montgomery (catherine.montgomery@durham.ac.uk), Professor Alison Buckler (chair@baice.ac.uk) or the Compare office (compare@baice.ac.uk).

CALL FOR PARTICIPATION

Welcome to the 2025 BAICE Annual ECR Hybrid Conference entitled “Knowledge, Power, and Possibility: Rethinking Education in the Memory of Dr. Arif Naveed”. This year’s conference honours the memory of Dr. Arif Naveed, whose work on inequality, education mobility, and social justice in the Global South continues to inspire critical and transformative scholarship. In his spirit, we invite early career researchers to question dominant paradigms, explore alternative ways of knowing, and imagine more just educational futures.

Drawing on Dr. Naveed’s spirit and ideas, this conference blends conferencing, un-conferencing, and collective gathering with the aim of fostering bold, innovative, and thoughtful conversations. Dr. Naveed was a tireless advocate for emerging scholars. He founded the BAICE Student Committee, helped launch the Student Fieldwork Grant, and co-hosted the 2016 Student Conference, which saw the publication of the piece ‘Understanding, embracing and reflecting upon the messiness of doctoral fieldwork’ along with his colleagues, an idea conceived from the Compare Forum. To learn more about Dr. Naveed’s legacy, read this tribute by his colleague Peter Sutoris. Further reflections from the international education community can be found here.

All sub-themes are intentionally framed through a decolonial lens, signalling our belief that every topic in education can be rethought from ‘an-other’ perspective. Presenters are empowered to define their own sub-themes within the broader framework, allowing you to determine how your work best fits and contributes to these critical conversations.

Compare Fellowship 2025-2026: Call for Applications https://baice.ac.uk/compare-fellowship-2025-2026-call-for-applications/ Mon, 10 Mar 2025 14:12:08 +0000 https://baice.ac.uk/?p=44008 Updated: 19/05/2025

Compare is a leading journal of international and comparative education, publishing eight issues a year of high-quality articles on diverse issues of educational policy and practice around the world. It is the official journal of the British Association of International and Comparative Education (BAICE), which works to support activities of research, teaching and collaboration in the field. In order to maintain its significant global standing, one of Compare’s missions is to develop the diversity of its authorship, and support underrepresented groups, in light of the significant inequalities of global academic publishing. For this reason, in 2017 it established an annual Compare Fellowship, to support early career academics from the Global South in disseminating their research and scholarship to a global audience.

The fellowship will run from 1 September 2025 – 31 August 2026 and provides full financial support (including travel, accommodation and subsistence) and guidance from an academic mentor for the following activities:

  • Attending and presenting at the BAICE conference 2026 (date and venue to be confirmed)
  • Attending the Compare writers’ workshop at the conference (a full-day course for early career researchers)
  • 1 – 2 week stay at an institution in the UK following the conference (to carry out library research, attend academic events, interact with colleagues and develop publication ideas with the guidance of a mentor)

While in their country of origin, the Compare Fellow will be expected to engage in the following activities:

  • Participating in e-mentoring
  • Developing an article for Compare
  • Facilitating the organisation of activities to support academic writing for other academics in their institution/country
  • Participating in Compare as a reviewer

Requirements of applicants

  • To be based currently in a university in a low-income country (according to the World Bank classification [1])
  • To have completed their doctoral degree within the last six years
  • To be teaching or researching in the field of education

Application procedure

All applicants should send the following documents via email to compare@baice.ac.uk

  • CV / resume (including qualifications, professional experience and publications)
  • Supporting statement of approximately 1000 words (outlining research interests, publication trajectory to date and future plans, and potential benefits of the fellowship for themselves and their institutions/countries)
  • Abstract for a conference presentation (for BAICE 2026) on a research topic of their choice (300 words)

If contact has already been made with a potential institution and mentor in the UK, then candidates should state this; however, it is not essential to have arranged this beforehand as support will be given for this.

The deadline for applications is Tuesday 3 June 2025.

A tribute to Keith Watson https://baice.ac.uk/a-tribute-to-keith-watson/ Mon, 27 Jan 2025 12:29:45 +0000 https://baice.ac.uk/?p=43771 At the end of last year, the BAICE Executive Committee learned of the death of Keith Watson. Keith’s working life preceded that of many of us on the Executive Committee, but his influence is central to BAICE’s existence, and his intellectual legacy is evident in how our field thinks and writes about comparative education today.

Keith Watson

Keith was the outgoing President of BCIES (the British Comparative and International Education Society); in 1998 BCIES and BATROE (the British Association of Teachers and Researchers in Overseas Education) merged to form BAICE as we know it. Keith also played key roles in the establishment of the International Journal of Educational Development (IJED) and UKFIET.

BAICE recently contributed a chapter to a book edited by the World Council for Comparative and Education Societies (WCCES). We were asked to reflect on the relevance of BAICE in this current period of global instability and uncertainty. With somewhat grim reassurance we drew on Keith’s contribution to BAICE’s inauguration, in which he referenced the unprecedented period of global instability that was the backdrop to BAICE’s launch. We agreed with Keith’s perspective that uncertainty does not diminish the potential for comparative work, rather it strengthens the need for more openness to different practices and ways of knowing.

Keith was well-known and well-respected by many. He published individually and in collaboration with other leading colleagues, and supervised and supported early career researchers who went on to have distinguished careers across academia and politics. He will be remembered as an influential scholar, a generous colleague and an inspiring mentor.
