IMPORTANT INFO: RSS Feed Changes

So, RSS feed mergers won't work like I thought they would. Since a merger of two feeds eliminates/overwrites all the tags iTunes needs in order to publish a podcast, I won't be able to use that method.

The good news: since I give iTunes the Feedburner URL (instead of the source RSS URL), once I swap feeds everyone currently subscribed to Bakacast will automatically get the new episodes. There will be no effort required on your part to keep up with the new stuff.

The bad news: all the old, Libsyn-hosted content will disappear from the iTunes feed. If you ever want to listen to older episodes, you can use the media player or directly download links available at Project Haruhi; also, I will also provide the URL for the old Libsyn RSS that you can manually add to whatever podcast software you use (like iTunes or Pocket Casts).

Episode 322 - Finally Free from Our Orphan Prison

Not only does this episode of Bakacast mark the end of the Winter 2017 season, but it also marks the end of me hosting these things on Libsyn. Starting at the next episode, we'll be part of the Audio Entropy podcast network. I will, however, still be posting shownotes like this on Project Haruhi in addition to Audio Entropy; and assuming an RSS feed merger works like I think it should, there shouldn't be a need to swap RSS subscriptions. Ultimately, this change will save me a whole lot of money each year and (hopefully) bring in more listeners for both Bakacast and the podcasts my friends are doing over at Audio Entropy.

This week, some shows improve, others continue to reveal their shortcomings, and some surpass expectations. Also, ACCA leads to the most heated disagreement we've had on Bakacast for a while...which pretty much amounts to me and Ben saying, "Your opinion makes no sense to me," to each other before moving on. That's right, you can always count on us for the compelling drama. Just like you can always count on me to find a way to talk about social justice, even when the context is monster girls.

Now that the winter season has begun in earnest, we dig into what it has to offer us. Which is...a mixed bag, honestly. Some good, some dull, some bad. And then there's Hand Shakers, a show that must be watched to truly understand how thoroughly and magnificently terrible it is. I do my best to articulate the sights and sounds one experiences when subjected to Hand Shakers, but human language can only communicate so much. Please, watch Hand Shakers and understand my suffering.

Also that Maid Dragon show is a very early contender for surprise of 2017, so that's certainly something.

Episode 306 - Where The Gundams At?

Due to scheduling difficulties and life interfering, we were forced to skip a few weeks of recording. So of course the logical thing to do was to recap, like, four episodes of each series we're watching, because we're a group of people who make great life choices. Long story short: Drifters loses its appeal but everything else stays pretty much on course. Overall this has been a pretty impressive season; and judging by the what I'm seeing for winter, we're about to face a pretty steep drop in watchable shows.

Also, there was a bit of an unavoidable technical problem with this episode. Megan's computer fan caused a noticeable high-pitched buzz in the recording, but one can't simply turn off a computer fan (it tends to end badly for the computer). I did my best to remove as much as I could, but it will likely still be noticeably when she talks. I apologize for any bother this causes.

Episode 301 - Fangs for the Memories

On this episode of Bakacast, I debut our new opening song composed by Mitchell Dill. It's not the final version, but I figured it'd be fun to switch things up post-episode-300. Also, I reveal my plans for what the next season will bring. Basically, I'll be taking a brief hiatus from the normal Bakacast schedule (since I've been watching, recording and editing for 6 years straight now). Instead of doing weekly reviews, I'll instead be going through the first two arcs of JoJo's with three people who've never watched the show before (plus Megan). These episodes will go up in place of the weekly episodes we'd normally put up for the summer season, and we'll return to the normal Bakacast stuff when the fall season starts.

Now, this doesn't mean you won't get ANY summer reviews from us. Whether it takes the form of posts on this blog or short, additional recordings with Ben and Larry every three weeks or so, we'll still be giving our thoughts on whatever summer shows we decided to watch.

Since most shows from fall were done and the majority of winter shows hadn't aired yet, we padded the episode out a bit with reviews of the first two episodes of Yamato 2199 and the first Mobile Suit Gundam: Thunderbolt OVA. Considering all of us on Bakacast are sci-fi nerds, both of those shows being very good made us quite happy. It certainly makes up for KyoAni going from the critically-acclaimed Sound Euphonium to the dreck that is Musaigen no Phantom World.

This ended up being a pretty jam-packed fall season. To the point where--if Heavy Object is the only show we drop--it'd take around 6 hours to watch everything. That's...a little insane, so we'll probably end up making cuts to shows that aren't bad but also aren't quite interesting enough. So I apologize in advance if I make an executive decision to stop reviewing your favorite show; but in my defense, I would probably go insane doing this every week.

Also, during listener questions I end up rambling about the various sources I get my remixes from.Some of them come from me discovering them randomly through social media channels, but I also list off a few sources I regularly turn to for ending music. In any case, Dragon Ball Super reminds us that some characters should just be forgotten about (and that the English dub is way better), Ranpo Kitan completely fails at the "mystery" part of a murder mystery, Shimoneta ends with an exciting twist, Gatchaman Crowds ends with an infuriating twist, and God Eater moves so slowly that it forces Aaron and me to come up with ludicrous theories to keep ourselves entertained.

On this episode of Bakacast, Luke gives us our long-awaited review of Triage X. Unfortunately, it is not nearly as ridiculous as Highschool of the Dead. But then, how many shows truly are?

As far as the reviews of the (mostly) not-terrible shows go, we love Jotaro playing tag with a vampire, we hate Shirou continuing to harp about ideals in the middle of a much more interesting battle, we're divided on how well Arslan is telling it's story, we have no idea what Punch Line is doing anymore, we're afraid that Sidonia is going to some very dark places soon, and we're as super-stoked as the Logicomas to be hanging out with Makoto Kusanagi again.

Episode 251 - Wet and Ready

I don't know why I'm watching anything other than Blood Blockade Battlefront. Like, what's even the purpose of anything else? JoJo's is cool, I guess, but the only characters worth a damn are Jotaro and Dio (and I guess we can count Joseph for his meme potential). Fate/Stay Night has decided that endlessly repeating a stupid argument is way more interesting than, you know, plot development, fight scenes, and its only remaining female characters (who happen to be the best ones it has). Sidonia has fallen into the abyss of endless fanservice. And Arslan is...well...it definitely ain't Legend of the Galactic Heroes.

Next week, I'll just skip all the other shows and watch BBB eight times.

I chose the image for this episode largely because I like seeing Shinji in physical distress, which happens to be the only satisfying thing about F/SN right now. Thankfully, JoJo is finally out of the doldrums and back to being ridiculous in an entertaining way. Punch Line surprises us by finally showing us its true power level (and revealing something about its main character that I really hope I have the correct interpretation of, because it'd be really cool). Nanoha Vivid, however, has started to make me feel uncomfortable while watching it. And Paranoia Agent finishes by leaving us somewhat baffled and mildly unsatisfied.

And I am also very happy that Nanoha Vivid has finally gotten around to showing its titular character fighting. Took it long enough. Meanwhile, Fate/Stay Night continues to mistakenly believe that anyone cares about Archer and Shirou's mutual angst, Blood Blockade makes even filler episodes entertaining, I still hate that asshole bard in Arslan, and Punch Line is actually really interesting now? Huh.

So Luke finally got around to watching Isuca, which he colorfully described as a "gas chamber." Which I guess means he liked it? Yeah, that's how metaphors work. By the end of his segment, I felt a little bad about what I did, so I gave him a much easier assignment for next time: Triage X. I'm a good friend.

In other news, we find that Nanoha Vivid is much better at being shounen than it is at being slice-of-life, Blood Blockade vampires are way better than most vampires these days, and Yamada-kun might secretly be the best rom-com this season.

Episode 244 - The Disappearance of Good Shows

Now, I know what you're going to say. "Dustin, did you really expect some of these shows on your list to be good?" No, of course I didn't. But I was also hoping that some of the less-obvious-stinkers would be, well, slightly above mediocre. Or at least not insulting. So hey, hats off to Shokugeki no Souma and Denpa Kyoushi for failing to clear my low expectations even harder than I thought they would. That was a hell of an achievement.

On the plus side, Kekkai Sensen is everything I hoped it would be and more. So yeah, just watch that show, I guess. Everything else is superfluous.

Honestly, my body forcing me to take a nap sounds more enjoyable than watching another episode of JoJo that tries to convince me that Boingo is a funny and entertaining antagonist. He's not. And Hol Horse can only do so much to salvage this arc. I love you, Araki. But sometimes I really hate you.

On this episode, our load finally lightens a bit as Yona and Parasyte have their season and series finales, respectively. If there's any justice in the world, Yona will get another season. Also, Luke reviews Gundam Build Fighters Try, which he didn't watch many episodes of simply because he didn't feel it deserved to be mocked very much. So...I guess all you people who kept talking about Build Fighters weren't just crazy. Let no one say I'm not willing to admit when I'm wrong.

Unless you're dissing Tari Tari. That show was pretty good, and I don't care what anyone else says.

Also, I'm certain we reviewed Yuri Kuma 11, but even after listening to the podcast to edit it I have no idea where our review of it actually is. So yeah. It's somewhere in there, probably.

We also learn that JoJo's still has some spunk left in it (thank you Darby); decide that Yuri Kuma is probably a dream Ikuhara had that he decided to adapt faithfully; break down the final themes of Parasyte; and discover, thanks to Aaron's love of manga, that Maria gets even more ridiculously pretty when she gets older. Some people are just lucky, I guess.

I swear to God, I've had to make so many shakes that by this point I could make them while blindfolded and sleep-walking. You know who else was probably blindfolded and sleepwalking? Durarara's in-between animators.

That is probably the longest and most forced setup I've ever done for a joke. I'd say I'm sorry, but I'm too tired to care. So deal with it, I guess.

It turns out Luke's willpower was not quite as bottomless as I imagined, since his review of "Testament of Sister New Devil" clearly shows signs that his soul is being heavily damaged. I'm hoping my next assignment will bolster his spirits (or at least won't make him feel like he should be monitored by the FBI). I've also decided that this will be the last week we'll be reviewing every show weekly, so after reviewing some of these shows I ask the other co-hosts if they feel it should go on the ever-three-weeks schedule. Finally, we take a break from retro-reviews to finally watch "Time of Eve," a movie we really shouldn't have put off for as long as we did. You see, the benefit of having close friends is that you can convince them to subject themselves to terrible things for your amusement. This is how Aaron has always used me, and now I'm using Luke for the same purpose. Every week, I'll assign Luke an anime to review. Because I am a merciful person, I have allowed him to watch as many or as few episodes of the show as he desires. Even a single episode would be good enough. Just when I thought Sword Art Online wasn't going to bog down its new arc in clumsily-handled drama, it goes and proves me wrong. Hopefully it won't be quite as migraine-inducing as Sion's childhood trauma. That's not the end to this week's disappointment, either. Gundam finally wears out its welcome, which means I once again have no good mecha shows to watch this season. My only hope now is for Shingeki no Bahamut to somehow end with Favaro and Kaisar piloting giant, steel golems. You laugh, but Rita already has a pseudo-rocket-punch.

So, this week is the week where we finally lose our patience with some shows. Gundam has one more shot to find its footing and become something that isn't mediocre. April Is Your Lie has failed to capture the attention of anyone besides Ben, and even he's not enthusiastic about all of us covering it. While Shirobako isn't bad (I actually think it's quite good), its style of humor just doesn't mesh well with me, which makes it painful to watch. And though Garo is still enjoyable enough for me to forgive its flaws, if it stays in its current holding pattern for much longer I might give it the boot.

I'm starting to struggle to figure out what to write here, because this fall season has been alarmingly stable. There haven't been any egregious episodes for typically good shows (yet), nor have their been fantastic episodes for shows that are kinda okay (yet). To use a strained nautical metaphor, it's steady as she goes with not a storm in sight. That said, there have been some warning signs. Our interest in Gundam and Garo is starting to wane, because we're not really sure what the shows are working toward. And Pyscho-Pass is beginning to push me away with how much it feels like it's been retreading from the first season. I'm crossing my fingers that these shows don't end up taking a slow descent into Terribleville.

It's a bit of a depressing week on Bakacast. JoJo is merely mediocre, Argevollen and Zankyou no Terror are downright stupid, and the artists of Gun Gale Online have taken a sudden interest in really making sure we notice Shinon's butt. And despite our reticence to drop shows this late into the season, there has been at least one casualty. I'd tell you to try and guess which one, but my rigid formatting standards require me to spoil it in the timestamps below; so it would be a bit pointless, wouldn't it?

On the other hand, we also get to watch Hanamonogatari, so it ain't all bad.

Bakacast - Flying into the Sunset

Also, after much prodding from Ben and all you guys, I finally got around to checking out Gekkan Shoujo Nozaki-kun. Turns out that show is good. Who would have thought.

This week on Bakacast, I jinx it by saying we're breezing through the reviews around the 11-minute mark. Turns out that was just a fluke, and it's just as long as all the others. We forget to mention it during the show, but we are no longer reviewing Barakamon; not because we don't like it (in fact, it might be our favorite series this season), but because it's a comedy, so there's really not a lot to say about it other than, "There sure were some pretty great jokes again." The same thing will probably happen with Sabagebu.
