I have been experimenting in making my own moisturiser. The criteria was that it needed to be organic & not contain any chemicals & it needed to be quick & simple – no more difficult than going to a shop or ordering online.
I used 3 tablespoons organic shea butter & 1 tablespoon of organic hemp oil which filled a small glass jar 6.5 cms diameter x 8cms high.
Make sure you wash your hands thoroughly before starting to prevent bacterial contamination.
Mash the shea butter with a fork to soften it & break it up then whisk until fluffy. Gradually add the oil whisking all the time until you get the texture you like.
Any oil combination will work. You could try coconut oil, jojoba oil, rosehip oil, apricot kernel oil or almond oil.
I prefer my cosmetics unperfumed but if you like essential oils you can add a few drops of your favourite.

I use it instead of the many harsh and toxic household cleaners & get great results. Sprinkle some on half a grapefruit & clean the bath!
Baking soda is also used for cleaning teeth & as a deodorant too. As a a natural beauty solution it is effective in treating acne & can correct the skin’s pH balance & help to heal breakouts.
The combination of bicarb & coconut oil is great for getting deep into your pores to prevent acne and blackheads & removing excess dirt, oil and exfoliating dead skin.
Coconut oil is antibacterial & moisturising but you can use any oil you prefer. I use hemp oil or rosehipseed oil…
Baking Soda and Coconut Oil Facial Cleanser
Only make enough for one treatment at a time & wash your hands beforehand just as you would when preparing food to prevent bacterial contamination.
Mix 2 tspns of coconut oil [or oil of your choice] with 1 tsp of bicarb to make a paste. Apply to your skin & massage in. Leave for 5 minutes & rinse with luke-warm water. Pat dry. You may not even need to apply moisturiser afterwards.

Palm oil is in roughly 50% of all packaged goods. from cookies, peanut butter, and breakfast cereal to cleaning products, laundry detergent, lipstick, and body lotion.
Are you wondering how that’s possible, because you don’t see the words “palm oil” on many of the ingredient labels in your pantry?
Here’s the scoop: Palm oil is often disguised, hidden behind many different ingredient names you probably don’t recognize when you go to your pantry or bathroom to check. To make things even more confusing for you as a consumer, sometimes companies will only disclose ingredients like “vegetable oil,” and though that vegetable oil blend likely contains palm oil, it’s not always a labeling requirement.

Priority species impacted by forest clearing are the Asian elephant, tiger, Sumatran rhinoceros and the orangutan. I hear people raving about Younique Mascara saying how wonderful it is so I thought I would take a closer look…
The Ingredient list can be found here on their website. They claim this mascara increases average lash volume by up to 400%! Since I wrote the rough notes for this blog some time ago they have changed the formula so I wonder if it is actually a kinder product now.
There are two tubes to be used as follows:
1. Apply an even coat of Transplanting Gel to lashes
2. Immediately apply Natural Fibers while Transplanting Gel is wet
3. Seal the fibers with Transplanting Gel. Repeat until you’ve reached desired fullness
I wonder how many layers people apply? Does it come off easily? The mind boggles, hilarious! I wonder if natural lashes fall out with too heavy an application?

It possesses a multitude of functions and can work as a film forming agent, hair fixative agent, suspending agent and antistatic agent. It’s also sometimes used as a waterproofing agent in cosmetic products, as well as an adhesive for nail binding products. It’s widely used by the cosmetic industry in products such as hair dye, mascara, nail polish, lipstick, hairspray, body wash, sunscreen and anti-aging treatment.

Carnauba comes from the leaves of the carnauba palm, a plant that grows in northeastern Brazil. In hot, dry weather, the palm secretes wax to protect its leaves from damage. To collect the wax, the leaves are dried and then beaten to dislodge the yellowish to brown waxy coating, which usually flakes off. The wax is refined and bleached before it’s used. It’s a hard substance, so it’s used to make durable coatings for floors and cars. It’s also used in polishes, varnishes, and beauty products like mascara, deodorant, and lipstick. Their advertising says “Iris Pallida Leaf Cell Extract: helps provide a more youthful appearance” I have never thought about getting my eyelashes to appear younger!
Now I have had to compare the old formula with the new – my verdict? The old formula actually was more user friendly & contained fewer potentially harmful ingredients!

Triclosan… is found in many personal care products, household cleaners & cosmetics. It was invented to be used as a surgical scrub for medical professionals, not for putting on your face or brushing your teeth.
“Studies have increasingly linked triclosan (and its chemical cousin triclocarban), to a range of adverse health and environmental effects from skin irritation, endocrine disruption, bacterial and compounded antibiotic resistance, to the contamination of water and its negative impact on fragile aquatic ecosystems.
When introduced to the market in 1972, triclosan was confined to hospital and health care settings. Since then triclosan exploded onto the market place in hundreds of consumer products ranging from antibacterial soaps, deodorants, toothpastes, cosmetics, fabrics, toys, and other household and personal care products. Triclosan’s success on the consumer market has been aided by the false public perception that antibacterial products are best to protect and safeguard against potential harmful bacteria.
However, an article in the journal Clinical Infectious Diseases, entitled “Consumer Antibacterial Soaps: Effective or Just Risky?” (2007), concludes that antibacterial soaps show no health benefits over plain soaps.
In 2010, FDA stated that, “Existing data raise valid concerns about the [health] effects of repetitive daily human exposure to [triclosan]” and announced plans to address the use of triclosan in cosmetics or other products.”

I have had problems with MCS [multiple chemical sensitivity] & have a severe allergic reaction to some perfumes, after shaves, air fresheners & laundry/ & cleaning products so I was particularly motivated to investigate this.
One problem for big perfume brands is that their label sells a dream which is incompatible with the message “this product may cause allergies”
“Manufacturers are not required to disclose any ingredients in cleaning supplies, air fresheners or laundry products, all of which are regulated by the Consumer Product Safety Commission.
Neither these nor personal care products, which are regulated by the Food and Drug Administration, are required to list ingredients used in fragrances, even though a single ‘fragrance’ in a product can be a mixture of up to several hundred ingredients”. Source Science Daily
The Cancer Prevention Coalition has previously warned that consumers are being exposed to fragrance ingredients that may cause cancer or foetal, hormonal or reproductive problems. But these fragrance ingredients are still unregulated – they don’t even need to be listed on the label.
The ramifications of this lack of regulation are fairly obvious. According to Science Daily, about 20 percent of Americans suffer adverse health effects from air fresheners, for example. Sensitivity to perfumes and other kinds of fragrances is a very common problem.
Perfumes and fragrances are the single largest category of cosmetic and personal care products,especially products used on your hair, face, and eyes.
Fragrances are also extensively used in a wide range of household cleaning products.
This latest study analyzed 25 commonly used, scented products, including:
- Air fresheners (oils, sprays and solids)
- Laundry products (detergent, fabric softeners, dryer sheets)
- Personal care products (soaps, hand sanitizers, lotions, deodorants, shampoos)
- Cleaning products (disinfectants, all-purpose cleaners, dish detergents)
About half of the products claimed to be green, organic, or natural.
Amazingly, the products tested emitted an average of 17 chemicals EACH, but only ONE compound was actually listed on the label.

It is beyond comprehension that perfume manufacturers are a class apart. Why are they free to concoct what they please & inflict it on the trusting public. It does look as if the EU are waking up but not the US. I expect it will take years & years for any great amendments to be made.
Maybe before you spray yourself in a cloud of glamour you will also think of the castrated beaver [see earlier post]

Irritated skin can be caused by a variety of factors. These include immune system disorders, medications & infections. When an allergen triggers an immune system response, then this is called an allergic skin condition.
Atopic Dermatitis (Eczema)
Eczema is the most common skin condition, which affects one in five infants but only around one in fifty adults. Some experts think it is due to “leakiness” of the skin barrier, which causes it to dry out and become prone to irritation and inflammation when exposed to some environmental factors. Some people also have a food sensitivity which can make eczema symptoms worse. Then again people with severe atopic dermatitis find that it is due to inheriting a faulty gene in their skin called filaggrin. The itch of eczema is not caused by histamine so anti-histamines do not control the symptoms. Eczema is often linked with asthma, allergic rhinitis (hay fever) or food allergy.
Allergic Contact Dermatitis
Allergic contact dermatitis occurs when your skin comes in direct contact with an allergen. For instance, if you have a nickel allergy and your skin comes in contact with jewellery made with nickel,[even a small amount] you may develop red, bumpy, scaly, itchy or swollen skin at the point of contact. This used to happen to me regularly; the back of wristwatches were often made with nickel.
Some plants like poison ivy, poison oak and poison sumac can also cause allergic contact dermatitis. The red, itchy rash is caused by an oily coating on these plants. The allergic reaction can come from touching the plants or even gardening tools that have come in contact with the oil. Touching clothing or pets can also cause a reaction.
Urticaria (Hives)
Hives can also be triggered by non-allergic causes like heat or exercise, medications, foods or insect bites. It is an inflammation of the skin triggered when the immune system releases histamine which causes small blood vessels to leak, in turn causing the swelling in the skin. You will be urged not to scratch the itch because that will causes more damage & more itching & swelling. Hives are not contagious even though they are often uncomfortable & in some cases, painful. Urticaria can be labelled as acute or chronic. Acute urticaria occurs after eating a particular food e.g. lobster or coming in contact with a particular trigger e.g. penicillin cream. Chronic urticaria is rarely caused by a specific trigger so allergy tests are not usually any use & it can last for months or years.
Angioedema
Angioedema is swelling in the deep layers of the skin & it is often seen together with urticaria (hives). Angioedema may occur in soft tissue e.g. the eyelids, mouth or genitals. Acute angioedema typically lasts for minutes or hours & is commonly caused by an allergic reaction to medications, foods or latex. Chronic recurrent angioedema is when the condition returns over a long period of time & does not appear to have an identifiable cause.
There are doctors who specialise in skin conditions, they are called a dermatologist, allergist or immunologist. These people are trained to accurately diagnose your condition and provide relief for your symptoms.
Unfortunately the medical system can only treat the symptoms with drugs & medications & not the underlying cause for the reaction – so if you can find out the cause/trigger for yourself you will be able to heal much faster.
Also in a previous post I discovered some of the potentially harmful ingredients e.g. propylene glycol are also in pharmaceutical preparations so to my mind going for the medical route in the first instance may actually be counterproductive.
I would use a kinesiologist if I couldn’t identify the cause of a reaction & boost my immune system. My thinking is that any reaction is an outward sign of a deficient immune system so my first course of action would be to use ice or a cool bath to reduce skin stress & up my mineral & vitamin consumption massively & see what happens over a few days.

Non Comedogenic: has a simple meaning – a product that will not clog pores. A clogged pore causes comedones which are white heads which in turn may become blackheads or pimples.
Another variation of the term is non acnegenic where a manufacturer has attempted to eliminate the chemicals that have been known, or tested on a laboratory animal to have comedones. Do animal skins react the same way as human skins do? If they don’t the results might not be accurate.
If a product passes certain tests it can be labelled non comedogenic but it may also contain oils that are comedogenic.
Alcohol free: Products labelled ‘alcohol free’ are believed to be gentler on the skin & hair & less drying. Cosmetic products claiming to be alcohol free generally do not contain ethyl alcohol [grain alcohol] which has a drying effect.
But…whether labelled ‘alcohol free’ or not, a product may contain other alcohols such as cetyl, stearly, cetearly or lanolin – all of which are known as fatty alcohols. I think ‘alcohol free’ is a misleading term
pH Balanced: pH [potentail hydrogen] is a measure of acidity & alkalinity. If it is balanced what is it balanced with?
The term pH buffered would make more sense; meaning that the product contains chemicals in it which will maintain it at the same pH.
Our skin is naturally slightly acidic so even if substances are applied to it that change it’s pH it will only have a temporary effect as the skin’s secretions will soon return it to it’s normal state.
