It’s easy to forget that websites can disappear, so it’s great to learn about initiatives like ASC using Archive-It to preserve digital history. I didn’t know the Purdue Alumnus is now only online—it’s reassuring that it will still be accessible for future researchers. Kudos to your team for keeping our community’s history alive.

Comment on The Search for Miss Webb by Rebecka L Hardy https://blogs.lib.purdue.edu/asc/2020/04/23/the-search-for-miss-webb/#comment-67457 Fri, 30 Jan 2026 20:40:20 +0000 http://blogs.lib.purdue.edu/asc/?p=3251#comment-67457 I am the great niece of Ms. Webb. Although she never married, she was engaged at the time of her death (due to tuberculosis). Her full name is Rhoygnette Allegra Webb (pronounced Roynette). She had two other brothers, one of which is my grandfather who in his own right accomplished many firsts as an African American. Extremely proud and as my grandad would often say: “it was expected”

Thank you for shining a spotlight on her, it is indeed a credit to the spirit of excellence of our community!

The detail about the hands-on training really highlighted how much dedication it took to master a Naval trade and the way that skill provided a unique window on the world. Did the author’s research uncover any particularly surprising contrasts in the places Navy sailors encountered?

From what I understand, Franklin didn’t patent his inventions, because he believed that innovation should benefit humanity rather than serve personal financial gain.

I can see both sides though. It’s hard to dedicate so much of you life to the kind of effort that inventing takes without seeing a financial benefit from it.
