This week a reporter from the activist media outlet DeSmog contacted me asking for comment on a CSIS briefing note from 2022. The briefing note contained factually incorrect information, and an out-of-context quote from a newsletter I had sent to constituents in early August 2021. It is troubling to see misinformation coming from CSIS. More troubling is the source of the misinformation was a Liberal Government funded foreign think tank report, which itself sourced the disinformation from the Liberal Party of Canada’s X account. Canadians expect higher standards from CSIS.

During a week when Steven Guilbeault announced his intention to resign from the Liberal Party over his objections to the Prime Minister’s approach to addressing climate change, and the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change discontinued the use of the doomsday forecast, RCP8.5, it is unsurprising the climate activists at DeSmog would try to dig up old news as a distraction. As DeSmog was thanked for contributing to the foreign think tank report, it raises more questions about these activists’ involvement in spreading Liberal disinformation.

Taxes on Ontario beers are the highest in Canada. The Carney Liberals plan to increase taxes on beer, wine, and spirits on April 1st. The Liberals have increased taxes on alcohol every year since 2017. Carney’s plan to increase the industrial Carbon Tax will make matters even worse for local breweries.

Craft breweries are a vital part of our community, offering unique products and catering to visiting tourists as well as the local crowd. We need to ensure they have a level playing field and aren’t burdened by excessive taxation or restrictive trade policies that favour large corporations over local producers.

Our local lumber industry has been hit hard in the absence of a Softwood Lumber Agreement, by the Liberal Carbon Taxes, and tariffs will only make matters worse. After ten years of the Liberal Government failing to secure a softwood lumber deal with the US, fewer jobs are available in the working forest.

One local mill had paid nearly $300,000 in Carbon Taxes but only received a $50,000 rebate because the rebate was based on the number of employees instead of actual costs. The lion’s share of the money went to big outfits. The additional costs are passed onto consumers. A trade war will have a devastating impact on our local lumber industry. Many of the parts for logging and sawmill machinery are manufactured in the United States. That means repairs will cost 25% more. New tariffs on top of the existing unfair U.S. tariffs will force the closure of some operators.

While our local mills and plants seek new markets in India and Pakistan, the best action for the government to take is to reduce taxes overall so more homes for Canadians are built.

Only Canada First Conservatives have a real plan to spark a home building boom. We’ll cut red-tape and taxes on homebuilding. We will build the homes and protect local lumber jobs.

On Friday, March 7th, 2025, I hosted a town hall at the Royal Canadian Legion Branch 72 in Pembroke to discuss justice issues impacting the Ottawa Valley. The event featured Mr. Larry Brock, M.P., Member of Parliament for Brantford—Brant and Conservative critic to the Minister of Justice, as a guest speaker.

The town hall was attended by nearly 100 residents from Pembroke and across the Valley, including notable figures such as Mayor of Pembroke Ron Gervais, Councillor Ian Kuehl, Mayor of Whitewater Region Neil Nicholson, and Mayor of Greater Madawaska Rob Weir. Newly elected M.P.P. Billy Denault took notes to bring to the Ontario Legislature.

The purpose of the town hall was to listen to concerns about crime and public safety, particularly in the Ottawa Valley, and to discuss nationwide security matters.

After ten years under the Trudeau-Carney Liberals, crime has skyrocketed in every community across Canada as a consequence of soft-on-crime policies driven solely by ideology.

Mr. Brock provided valuable insights into the rising crime rates and public safety concerns felt throughout the country. Drawing from his extensive legal career, which includes over 33 years of experience and 17 years as a Crown Attorney in Brant County, Ontario, Mr. Brock highlighted the changes in the justice system under former Prime Minister Stephen Harper and the subsequent shifts under the Liberal government led by Justin Trudeau and now Mark Carney.

Mr. Brock pointed out that the crime surge has affected the quality of life for nearly all Canadians. He noted that Pembroke, with a population of just over 14,000 residents, has a crime rate 118% higher than the provincial average and 60% above the national average.

I was encouraged listening to Municipal councillors who are focused on housing affordability, infrastructure, and community safety. As a result of Trudeau’s Carbon Taxes, reckless spending, and lost border control, Canadians are facing a cost-of-living crisis. We need every level of government focused on real solutions to real problems.

The councillors are advocating for better use of existing tax dollars, so municipalities can support Canadians with the infrastructure and services they need and deserve.

Liberal policies force rural municipalities to compete with larger cities for infrastructure funds. It is time to end Trudeau’s Hunger Games competition for critical infrastructure funding.

The municipal representatives also called for action from the federal government to address the crime and chaos plaguing our once safe streets. Changes to the Criminal Code will end the Liberals’ catch and release approach to dealing with violent dangerous offenders. The Federation of Canadian Municipalities (FCM) is also seeking meaningful consultations with the federal government on the future of policing in Canada.

Canadians need to have a debate about the best approach to law enforcement in jurisdictions without a provincial police force. Canada needs a dedicated national police force to tackle cybersecurity, terrorism, and organized crime, which cut across municipal and provincial borders.

I was also pleased to hear from municipal leaders that their focus must remain committed to reducing home building roadblocks, maintaining essential infrastructure, and making our neighbourhoods safe again.

I’m asking Prime Minister Justin Trudeau what he has done with over $100,000,000 taken from rural Canadians. This comes after the Liberal Government released the updated number of Canadian families receiving the Rural Supplement, that had previously been added to the Carbon Rebate, declined by 828,150 this year.

Trudeau bragged about doubling the Rural Rebate. Now we know how he paid for it – by claiming 800,000 fewer Canadians live in rural Canada.

According to Statistics Canada, in Ontario there are 2,514,731 rural residents living outside a Census Metropolitan Area. Last year 1,705,560 Ontario families received the rural supplement. This year, according to figures released by the Canada Revenue Agency, only 1,060,670 were eligible to receive the rural supplement. Following changes to the legislation establishing the Liberal Carbon Tax made in June, Canadians, who lost their rural status as a result of updates following the most recent census, will continue to receive the rural supplement, but only for the remainder of the current fiscal year.

Trudeau’s policies made housing in Canadian cities unaffordable. Now, more and more Canadians must move outside those cities, and outside the range of municipal public transit, just to find a home. Trudeau’s plan is to punish those Canadians by increasing taxes on the gas they need to drive to work, while cutting their Carbon Rebates by 20% at the same time.  Residents in those rural communities welcomed the Canadians who had become refugees of the affordability crisis. Now those communities will be punished for the sin of having affordable housing policies.

The NDP-Liberal Government promised to increase the rural supplement from 10% to 20%. Instead, the government secretly cut thousands of Canadians off from receiving the supplement altogether.

The rural supplement to the Carbon Tax Rebate is paid to Canadians, who live outside a Census Metropolitan Area (CMA), so long as they completed a 2023 tax return, and checked the box indicating they live outside a Census Metropolitan Area.

Forcing Canadians to opt-in to the rural supplement is another way for the Canada Revenue Agency and the Liberals to discriminate against rural Canadians. That CRA can deny people living in rural communities the rural supplement only proves the purpose of the checkbox on the tax return is to reduce the number who opt-in.

The boundaries of a Census Metropolitan Area are determined by economic criteria that has almost no impact on the amount of Carbon Tax a Canadian pays. The expansion of the metro boundaries may be a signal that people living on the edges of a metro area are in fact paying more in Carbon Taxes. Arnprior was added to the Ottawa-Gatineau Census Metropolitan Area after the 2021 census revealed that over 50% of Arnprior residents were now driving to Ottawa for work. McNab/Braeside was included because more than 50% of residents already worked in Arnprior.

Trudeau’s high tax, high deficit agenda fueled inflation, and drove up home prices. This forced many people to move further and further from the city. Now that they have to drive to Ottawa for work, they pay even more in Carbon Taxes than they would if they had been able to find an affordable home in the city.

I ask residents of McNab/Braeside and Arnprior to check their bank statements and report how much they received in climate rebate payments. You can contact me by phone at 613-992-7712, by email at cheryl.gallant@parl.gc.ca, or online at cherylgallant.com/rural-rebate.

Members of Parliament learned more than 90 percent of all Federal Government departments are at an increased risk of cyber-attack, according to testimony given at Defence Committee yesterday.

In response to a question I posed, Yana Lukasheh, Vice-President, Government Affairs and Business Development with SAP Canada Inc. said:

“Less than 10% of government departments have adopted innovative technologies in the cloud. That leaves them susceptible to cyber security attacks and threats, and we have seen these threats in public media lately with Canadian Revenue Agency and Global Affairs Canada.”

Lukasheh added, “Technology adoption in the cloud is going to be extremely important in safeguarding our Canadian organizations.”

“If we compare that to other jurisdictions and global allies, they are far ahead in adopting innovative and safe and trusted technologies in the cloud.”

After 8 years, it is clear the NDP-Liberal Government cannot be trusted to manage cyber security. Cutting the Defence Department’s IT budget will leave Canada even more vulnerable to cyber attack.

Last year, the Auditor General of Canada issued a scathing report on the Federal Government’s use of cloud services. The report read:

“Overall, we found the requirements the government had in place to reduce the security risks of storing information in the cloud were not always followed by the departments we audited. In addition, these requirements and their corresponding roles and responsibilities were not always clear, resulting in inconsistent implementation and increased risks.”

Members of Industry associations, representing hundreds of thousands of businesses across Canada, are urging extension of the Canada Emergency Business Account (CEBA) repayment deadline.

According to Trade Association Restaurants Canada, “Bankruptcy filings in foodservice have increased 116 per cent since 2022 and Trade Association Restaurants Canada is expecting more restaurants to close their doors as a result of the federal government’s failure to take action.”

“We are nearing our sector’s summer high season. However, with half of all foodservice companies currently operating at a loss or just breaking even and 80 per cent making less profit today compared to pre-pandemic (2019), many of our members are weighing their options to either remain open and continue incurring further debt, or close their businesses and file for bankruptcy;”

As I visit communities like Whitney, Barry’s Bay, Eganville, Renfrew and Calabogie that rely on tourism, I get the same message, “People can’t afford to travel.”

The majority of Canada’s foodservice sector is still struggling to recover from the financial shocks caused by the lockdowns. The situation has been made worse by a punishing interest rate policy due to excessive government spending, and inflation-fuelling carbon taxes.

The Parliamentary Budget Officer confirmed that 40 percent of borrowed spending had nothing to do with the pandemic.

As the December 31st, 2023 repayment deadline approaches, a Restaurants Canada survey has revealed that nearly 20 per cent of the restaurants that have yet to reimburse CEBA will not be able to repay it in part or at all given the state of Canadian foodservice, findings that are unsurprising given:

  • Canada’s foodservice industry has hit the 100-billion-dollar mark, yet when adjusted for inflation, in comparison to all other Canadian business sectors, restaurants have experienced a 12 per cent drop in economic activity (GDP) from 2019 to 2022, second last to the arts, entertainment and recreation industry which is down by 19 per cent; and
  •  nearly every operational cost is on the rise due to inflation; utilities have increased by 6 per cent, proteins have increased by 9 per cent (beef), 11 per cent (seafood), 13 per cent (chicken), and cooking oil (up 40 per cent), as well as rising labour costs, and restaurateurs have been forced to absorb as much as they can to avoid impacting consumer traffic.

For many small and medium sized businesses, the December 31st, 2023, repayment deadline is simply impossible to meet – which reflects the poor fiscal record of the federal government. Post-pandemic operational challenges like inflation, labour shortages and supply chain hurdles are further diminishing the profitability of businesses and lengthening the recovery process entirely.

It is time to throw our entrepreneurs a lifeline.

Only a Conservative Government will axe the carbon tax, which is what is really needed to tame inflation and lower interest rates

During a visit to St. Francis Herb Farm in Barry’s Bay, I voiced my opposition to the federal government’s proposed new regulations for natural health products.

Existing regulations on health supplements already keep Canadians safe. These unnecessary new regulations put Canadian businesses at a disadvantage.

New regulations being placed on health supplements are extremely burdensome, to the point that some supplement-makers say the Canadian market is simply too small for it to be worth the investment.

Canadians will lose access to the health supplements they choose due to more red tape and fees to the federal government, rather than improve health impact. This new red tape is about pushing small and medium-sized manufactures out of business instead of protecting Canadians.

Paul Rivett-Carnac, owner of St. Francis Herb Farm, said: “The new regulations will drive up costs to consumers, cut availability for people with rare health conditions, and prevent new products from being developed.”  According to the Canada Health Food Association, the new requirements make it more difficulty to read labels, create environmental waste, and cost consumers more.

Common sense Conservatives will ensure Canadian businesses are competitive and that Canadians’ access to safe supplements is protected.
