CNN Hero of the Year Stephen Knight Expands Dogs Matter to Southern California, Partnering with Project Street Vet to Connect Pet Families with Foster Care, Veterinary Care and Recovery Resources

DALLAS, TX  & LOS ANGELES, CA  (August 2026) –  Dogs Matter, the Texas-based nonprofit founded by 2024 CNN Hero of the Year Stephen Knight, today announced the launch of Dogs Matter SoCal, marking the organization’s first expansion outside of Texas. The new Southern California program will bring Dogs Matter’s established model of temporary foster care, recovery coaching, Aftercare, and pet-inclusive treatment support to unhoused pet owners who are ready to begin substance use treatment.

Since 2015, Dogs Matter has worked to ensure that no one has to choose between seeking recovery and keeping the pet they love. Through temporary foster care, recovery coaching, Aftercare, and pet-inclusive treatment options, the organization has helped more than 3,500 pets and their people while achieving a one-year sobriety rate of more than 70% among participating clients.

The first phase of Dogs Matter SoCal will focus on Los Angeles’ Skid Row community, connecting unhoused pet owners with addiction treatment, temporary foster care for their pets, recovery support, and other resources. As a local partner, Project Street Vet will support the initiative by providing veterinary care and helping connect Dogs Matter with pet families who may benefit from its recovery services.

Project Street Vet is a national nonprofit founded by veterinarian and 2023 CNN Hero of the Year Dr. Kwane Stewart that provides free veterinary care and support to pet families experiencing homelessness and housing vulnerability. The organization has deep roots in Southern California and years of experience providing street veterinary care throughout the Los Angeles region.

Project Street Vet has spent years delivering free veterinary care and support directly to pet families experiencing homelessness and housing vulnerability throughout Southern California and across the country. Through this collaboration, veterinary care and recovery services will now work hand in hand.

The partnership grew from a connection between Knight and Stewart through the CNN Heroes community, where they recognized a natural alignment between their organizations’ missions. Dogs Matter’s expertise in foster care and recovery support complements Project Street Vet’s work providing veterinary care to pet families experiencing homelessness and housing vulnerability, creating new opportunities to connect Southern California pet families with additional resources. 

The Dogs Matter SoCal initiative follows Dogs Matter’s proven three-step approach:

RESCUE: Offers a free, safe and healthy environment for a client’s pets while seeking inpatient treatment. 

REHAB: Ensure the welfare of the pet and their owner, reuniting them once the client has successfully completed treatment and is ready to be a healthy and responsible pet owner again.

REUNITE: Provides a 12-month Aftercare Program to ensure clients and their pets remain together in a safe and healthy environment while staying clean and sober. After reuniting, Dogs Matter lends a helping hand with a certified recovery support peer specialist for check-in calls, and visits if necessary.  

The initiative also incorporates Dogs Matter’s Companion Recovery model, helping clients access pet-friendly treatment facilities and sober living environments whenever possible, reducing unnecessary separation between people and their pets.

Much like the juveniles who cycle through the program at Gainesville State School, Spike was living at the residential dormitory until his life, actually the life of his owner, turned around.

Temporary Care For Permanent Change

As a participant in DPA’s Positive Alternatives to Shelter Surrender (PASS) program, his owner temporarily handed Spike over to foster care while he got his life back on track. The goal of PASS is to reunite pets with their families after the crisis has passed and they are once again able to properly care for the pet. Everything went to plan, until it didn’t.

A Very Popular Resident

After arriving at the BARK Dorm, Spike quickly became a popular and beloved companion and was scooped up and carried around by staff and students alike. His small but mighty personality quickly served as inspiration for all who knew him as an example of perseverance and making the best of things always. Spike is truly the poster child for the saying, “good things come in small packages,” and inspired residents to strive to overcome any hurdle or struggle with bravery, and a wag of his tiny tail.

Release and Return

After two years of dedicated service, Spike was scheduled to return to his family but it became clear his heart belonged to the BARK Dorm. His presence was greatly missed by all at the BARK Dorm and he also seemed to miss the staff and residents, as well as the attention that comes along with having lots of caregivers. 

Spike has been adopted by one of the employees at the BARK Dorm and is now permanently on staff to teach the youths responsibility, patience, empathy, and the importance of making the most of a second chance. His paws tap happily through the hallways of the BARK Dorm every day, lifting the spirits of everyone he encounters. 

A Very Special and Mutually Beneficial Program

Spike is just one of many dogs in the PASS program who have resided at the BARK Dorm and been cared for by the juvenile residents. In many cases, these foster dogs offer the first opportunity the boys have had to care for a pet and feel the enormity of a dog’s unconditional love. This program is truly a win-win for all involved as the dogs are able to live there temporarily rather than being surrendered to an overcrowded shelter and the boys learn vital skills for leading successful lives after graduation.

We All Need a Little Help Sometimes

To be accepted into the PASS program, pet owners complete an application describing their personal challenges and what help they require. Sometimes it is merely help with food, vaccinations, medicine, or veterinary care, but occasionally it involves temporary foster care for the pet. If a pet owner is facing housing issues, financial hardship, domestic violence, medical treatment, or moving into a treatment facility for substance abuse, sometimes a longer- term solution is needed. That is where the BARK Dorm steps in and takes in these dogs until their families are in a position to resume their care.

In the case of Spike, the PASS program was able to offer foster assistance and potentially save his life while his pet parent saved his own. In the process, Spike was able to help the kids at the BARK Dorm get their lives back on track. 

And now he is back on the inside leading the pack at the BARK Dorm and continues to inspire countless young men to find their way back to a good life on the outside.

Across the U.S., mental health challenges are more common than many realize. More than 1 in 5 adults are living with a mental illness, and millions experience anxiety or depression symptoms every year. Even in day to day life, the impact shows up quietly about 1 in 8 adults report regular feelings of anxiety, and nearly 1 in 20 report ongoing depression.

Through our PASS program and through Dogs Matter, we see every day how deeply mental health and the human animal bond are connected. For many, a pet is more than companionship, they are comfort in anxious moments, purpose in uncertain seasons, and a steady presence when everything else feels unsure. That matters more than ever in a world where, in recent years, nearly 1 in 5 adults reported experiencing symptoms of anxiety or depression in a given year. Pets can help decrease feelings of loneliness, lower blood pressure, and increase opportunities for exercise and social connection, all of which play a role in overall mental wellbeing.

This month, through our PAWSITIVE SUPPORT campaign, we’re honoring the impactful role pets play in mental health.

Noah & Nash: Finding Stability in the Midst of Recovery

When Noah reached out to Dogs Matter, he was at one of the lowest points in his life. Facing eviction and struggling with addiction, he was also trying to care for Nash, his husky.

He found a treatment center that would accept him, but not Nash. Without a safe place for his dog, Noah made the impossible choice to leave treatment early. Like so many who don’t receive the support they need at the right time, he relapsed.

But then, he found Dogs Matter.

For the first time in a long time, Noah felt something he hadn’t felt in a long time, hope. While Noah focused on his recovery, Nash entered our Bark Dorm program, where he received consistent training, structure, and care. When they were reunited, Noah didn’t just get his dog back, he had stability. 

Their daily walks to the dog park became more than routine. It was there that Noah found space to breathe and reconnect with himself. Even in the midst of PTSD and social anxiety, the park became a place of peace and connection.

When the hard days come, Nash is the reason Noah keeps going. In his words, “I probably wouldn’t be sober if it weren’t for Nash.”

Today, Noah is not only sober, he’s been accepted back into his master’s program in Clinical Mental Health Counseling. In just one year, he’ll be helping others navigate the same path he once walked.

Reina: Choosing Help Instead of Goodbye

When Reina’s owner arrived at Dallas Animal Services, she believed she had no other option but to surrender her beloved dog. She was struggling deeply with her mental health and wanted to make sure Reina would be safe while she sought the care she needed.

That’s when she was introduced to our PASS program. Although Reina was initially taken into the shelter due to the urgency of the situation, our team stayed closely connected working with both the shelter and Reina’s owner to find a solution that would keep them together in the long run.

Within just two days, a foster hero stepped in. Reina found a temporary home with Debbie, a DPA foster, where she spent two weeks surrounded by care, comfort, and even a new best friend, another foster pup named Jessie.

During that time, Reina’s owner was able to focus on herself, on healing, on getting to a better place. And when she was ready, Reina was right there waiting for her. Her owner later shared how deeply grateful she was, not just for the help, but for the feeling that she wasn’t alone in one of her hardest moments.

These stories are not rare, they happen everyday. Humans trying to hold it together and moments where an act of support changes everything.

While food insecurity is an ongoing issue, recent events at the national level have increased the need for assistance with free pet food for many Texans and their four-legged friends.  

Free Pet Food Drive 

If you can help provide free pet food to our neighbors in need, Dallas Pets Alive and Community Beer Co. are sponsoring a pet food drive until further notice. Stop by CBC every Wednesday to Sunday between the hours 11 a.m. to 9 p.m. with your donation to help those in immediate need of free pet food. As a special “cheers to you for helping”, you earn a free pint with each donation until November 30. 

Any brand of canned and dry food is needed to stock the shelves at our free pet food pantry.  Please be sure to check that your donated items are unopened and not expired before you drop them off. All donated food will be distributed immediately through DPA’s free pet food pantry.

Humane Society of Dallas County 

HSDC is part of the Dallas Pets Alive family and offers free pet food through our emergency pantry every day between 12- 5 p.m. at 2719 Manor Way in Dallas. No appointment is needed and food is provided on a first come, first served basis.  

SPCA of Texas 

The SPCA of Texas is sponsoring a drive-thru pet food pantry on November 16 from 8- 10 a.m. at Homeward Bound, Inc at 2535 Lone Star Drive in Dallas. You will need to pre-register the website before you go. They also have options for individual pickups if that day or time does not work for you.  

Operation Kindness 

The Operation Kindness Pet Food Pantry generously provides free pet food in a convenient drive-thru setting on Thursdays and Sundays from 11 a.m. – 1 p.m. They are located at 3201 Earhart Dr. in Carrollton, TX. Click the link for more information or to apply for assistance for up to 6 months at time. 

Dallas Animal Services 

On the 2^nd Saturday and 4^Th Wednesday each month, Dallas Animal Services offers a drive-thru pet food pantry at 1818 North Westmoreland Road in Dallas from 8 – 9 a.m., or until supplies run out. For more information, send an email to daspetsupport@dallas.gov 

Don’t Forget to Feed Me 

Don’t Forget to Feed Me is a network of volunteers and distribution partners in the Fort Worth area who provide free pet food to their clients. Visit their website for a list of participating partners near you.  

Sometimes Humans Need Help, Too

Of course we understand that pets are not the only ones who might need some help during this time. Since happy pet owners make for happy pets, here is a non-exhaustive list of food pantries offering support for our human neighbors as well. 

Tarrant Area Food Bank distributes food to many pantries and other nonprofits across Texas. Click the link to access their online search tool of local food pantries near you.  

Catholic Charities offers assistance in Collin, Hunt, Dallas, Rockwall, Kaufman, and Ellis Counties through fixed and mobile distribution locations. You can find pantry locations and schedules here. 

North Texas Food Bank offers a great tool on their website to find agencies and distribution centers convenient to you. They do recommend you contact any of their partners prior to visiting to confirm their hours and other information.  

Through their New Hope Center in Euless, 6 Stones offers emergency food in a client choice market. While there is limited walk-in availability, they recommend appointments for the best service. Check their website for times, location and to make an appointment.  

When Texans help Texans, we can fill the bellies of companion pets and their families across our area and help keep those beloved pets where they belong…in their forever homes.

Signature fundraising gala returns November 7 to celebrate rescue, transformation, and community impact

DALLAS, TEXAS  (October 2025) Dallas Pets Alive (DPA) is a volunteer-based rescue organization dedicated to saving the lives of North Texas’ most at-risk pets. By working alongside fosters, adopters, volunteers, and community partners, DPA provides the resources and programs needed to give every pet the chance to thrive. We are thrilled to announce the return of its signature fundraising gala, the DPA Soirée, on Friday November 7, 2025. 

This year’s Soirée promises to be an unforgettable celebration of compassion, connection, and second chances. The evening will bring together animal lovers, community leaders, philanthropists, and advocates for a dazzling night of live entertainment, spirited auctions, dinner & dancing, and heart warming rescue success stories. 

Funds raised through the Soirée will directly support the lifesaving programs of Dallas Pets Alive, Dogs Matter, and Humane Society of Dallas County. These funds provide essential medical care, training, and safe shelter for North Texas pets in need, while also helping families in crisis keep their beloved animals at home. Trap-Neuter-Return is the most effective and compassionate method for managing these populations. It involves humanely trapping cats, having them spayed or neutered, vaccinated, and then returning them to their original location. This approach not only prevents the birth of more kittens but also stabilizes the colony and improves the overall health of all of the cats.

Don’t Be a Feeder Breeder

If you have outdoor cats in your neighborhood, don’t be a feeder breeder! Help the long-term health of the cats and the colony by learning about the Trap-Neuter-Return program. We understand the desire to feed community cats, but there is a better and more responsible way to help them.

A cat who has already been fixed as part of a Trap-Neuter-Return program will have the tip of their left ear cleanly snipped. If their ears are intact, they are candidates for neutering. Kittens in the colony need to be at least three months old and weigh at least three pounds to have the best chance to thrive after surgery and release. It is also important to wait to trap a nursing female cat until after her kittens have weaned, around 8 weeks post-partum. Waiting those critical weeks helps the mom cats have an easier and more complete recovery post surgery.

Appropriate traps should measure between 30”- 36” L x 10” W x 12” H. Line the trap with newspaper or pee pads and the food you regularly feed them, placed at the far end of the trap, beyond the trigger plate. If the cats are wary, you can skip feeding them for the day before so that they are hungry and more amenable to entering the trap to get a belly full. 

Check here for information on Trap-Neuter-Return programs in your area. You should make an appointment for the cats the day before you set out your traps and then hold them overnight in a safe place. 

The best times to trap cats are early morning, dusk, or the normal times you see and feed them. Keep an eye on your trap, especially if it is hot, or cold, or other inclement weather and never leave a trap overnight. 

The Neuter Part of Trap-Neuter-Return

Under no circumstances should you try to handle a cat in a trap. Be sure both doors are securely closed and cover the trap with a blanket or large towel to keep your fingers safe as well as a way to keep the cat calm. Bring the cat inside to a basement, bathroom, garage, or enclosed porch overnight where they will be comfortable.

On the morning of your appointment, place the trap on an old blanket or newspaper in your car where it is not in danger of rolling over and take the cat to the participating veterinarian for their surgery. 

Now for the Return

The day after the surgery, you will receive post-op care information. For males, they can generally be released immediately, whereas females should remain in the trap in a safe place for 24 hours more. 

It is vitally important that you release the cats in the same place you trapped them to minimize stress and risk to the cat.

Tiffany has spent the last decade in the animal behavior industry and is a certified canine behavior consultant. As the owner of Boss Babe Dog Training, she’s been a trusted DPA partner for several years. When she’s not helping dogs and their humans build stronger bonds, Tiffany enjoys hiking with her pups or competing in frisbee events with her Updog Dallas club.She’s excited to bring her expertise and compassion to help elevate the care and welfare of every dog in DPA’s program.

Lauren Hayes, HR Assistant, Dallas Pets Alive

Originally from Minneapolis, Lauren has called Texas home for the past seven years. With over 10 years of HR experience and a recent Master’s in Human Resources, she brings valuable structure and support to our growing organization.
When she’s not ensuring smooth operations behind the scenes, you’ll find her exploring new restaurants, taking local classes, or spending time with her dog Lincoln, who never misses a car ride!

Ashley Morgan, Community Engagement Manager , Humane Society of Dallas County

A lifelong book lover and storyteller, Ashley’s imagination shines through her love for epic fantasy, Disney, and Marvel universes. When she’s not immersed in a good novel, she’s out hiking or camping with her two dogs, Teke and Emma.
As our new Community Engagement Manager, Ashley brings creativity and passion to deepening HSDC’s connections with our supporters and community partners.

Dallas Pets Alive (DPA) is proud to announce that our Founder & CEO, Leslie Sans, has been appointed to the Best Friends Animal Society’s Network Strategy Council (NSC).

The NSC is a volunteer committee of 16 animal welfare leaders from across the country who advise on how to best support the work of animal rescue groups and shelter organizations in the U.S. The council is part of the Best Friends Network, a coalition of more than 5,500 partners nationwide including shelters, rescue groups, and spay and neuter organizations. Together these groups share one mission: saving the lives of dogs and cats who can be saved and building communities where every pet has a chance at a loving home.

Leslie was selected because of her innovative approach to rescue, her proven record in building lifesaving programs, and her dedication to advancing the no-kill philosophy.

Leslie shared: “I am truly honored to represent Dallas Pets Alive on the Best Friends Network Strategy Council. This appointment is an incredible opportunity to share our innovative, community-driven approach to rescue. I look forward to working alongside leaders from across the country to advance lifesaving practices that will bring us closer to a no-kill nation.”

Why This Appointment Matters

This appointment is not only a recognition of Leslie’s leadership but also a reflection of how far Dallas Pets Alive has come in building community based solutions to lifesaving. By bringing DPA’s perspective to the national stage, we are able to share what works in Dallas and learn from other leaders across the country.

At the same time, being part of the council allows us to connect more deeply with the Best Friends Network and benefit from the resources, mentorship, and innovation that fuel no-kill progress nationwide. It is a partnership that strengthens both organizations and, most importantly, saves more lives.

As a member of the NSC, Leslie will work alongside Best Friends CEO Julie Castle and other council members to:

• Identify emerging issues, solutions, and resources to accelerate the no-kill mission
  
• Provide feedback on the needs of shelters and rescue groups across the country
  
• Mentor future leaders in animal welfare and help organizations striving to increase lifesaving

Together, they provide medical care, training, and safe shelter for pets in need, while also helping families in crisis keep their beloved animals at home. Every dollar raised ensures more pets, and the people who love them, have the chance to live healthy, happy lives.

You Are the Missing Piece To What We Do

Since 2012, DPA has positively impacted the lives of countless homeless pets by seeking out and saving the most vulnerable animals who are at the highest risk of euthanization in overcrowded shelters.

Although each animal and situation may be unique, each case has something important in common. None of the thousands of interventions would have been possible without the support of our generous donors. Without each of YOU, many beautiful lives would certainly have been lost.

Doing the Hard Work Every Day

DPA does not turn away from adoptable pets suffering from treatable yet overwhelming medical issues. By working with our community veterinary partners, DPA writes happy endings for deserving pets who would otherwise be deemed unsavable. More than a third of the animals we help are “major medical cases” and require at least $1,000 in medical treatments. In 2024 alone, DPA’s medical expenses topped in excess of $496,000 and included everything from basic vaccinations and heartworm treatments to all manner of life-saving procedures.

PASS, Dogs Matter, the BARK Dorm, the CAT Dorm, the Humane Society of Dallas County, and the award-winning Adoption Container by Cuddly, along with our more traditional adoption and foster programs, have led the way in North Texas for happy and healthy pets and people. Through the PASS program alone, DPA has assisted 8,730 pet owners and kept 4,040 companion animals out of shelters where they would face an uncertain future.
