If everyone had access to affordable housing and mental health care, crime rates would drop, and people would be less likely to experience homelessness, drug misuse, abuse, loss of community ties, and violence from the police. The millions flowing to the Ottawa police should be redirected to housing. As a taxpayer of Ottawa, I would like to see the value for money for all these cops…or really I should be saying all these officers on leave. The tide can turn with violence prevention programs and poverty reduction where everyone can have a good chance for success, love, and a sense of belonging. We could be putting funds into youth outreach workers, free food initiatives, access to popular education, and transformative justice case workers. But the capitalist elites wouldn’t want that because their positions of privilege relies on the continued oppression and criminalization of Black, Indigenous, and People of Colour.

Another stirring post with sentences like below describing Elmira Castle to thinking about Ottawa, “standing there, I found myself thinking the Ottawa Police Service whose budget we’re campaigning to freeze…
The over-policing of Black and Indigenous people directly contributes to generating the data the OPS uses to justify yearly budget increases. The OPS is making money – and lots of it – just like the slave catchers did.”

Great read as always. Very informative and descriptive. Sounds like an amazing trip which your kids will remember for a lifetime.

Wow! As always Mr. Browne hit the mark. I live in a country where the Sports Machine originated and two incredibly powerful Professional Sports Leagues- National Football League (NFL) and the National Basketball Association (NBA). Most people are obsessed with the home team in these leagues and “trained” if you like to simply think about the game itself only and nothing about who is behind “the curtain” or team owner. Loved it and got me thinking. I love the NBA but will watch with a critical eye for sure. Great read!

Well argued Robin. Perceived reputation should not be the basis of determining an individual is a good or bad person. People that have great reputations ending up doing some really bad things in private but in the public eye he or she always seem the perfect citizen. Too many examples happen all the time especially with high-profile politicians on the right or left. Nicely put together Robin! This post made me think…

Given these challenging times with respect to the OPS and the community, I find Robin’s letter both timely and speaks truth to power. For me, Chief Sloly is, among other things, a “leader”. In the words of John C. Maxwell, ” a leader is one who knows the way, goes the way and shows the way.” Skof, on the other hand, may want to emulate Chief Sloly rather that act like a demagogue.
