Ways to Feed Your Soul

We all have those days. If you're a mother, you know the feeling of sensory overload. That "If-one-more-person-touches-me" feeling. Motherhood doesn't end at 6pm. Motherhood is a 24 hour job. It doesn't end on the weekend. There is always another "can I have", always another fight to break up and always another "what's to eat?". The circle of life seems to begin and end with you. Nourish them, nurture them, but don't forget to make sure they learn independence. It's a hard never ending battle that sometimes feels like it robs all of you into it. And as stressful and dirty and messy as it is, we still keep pouring ourselves into these people.

Because it is worthy.

We know it is worthy. We know the value that it has. Because behind every little dirt smeared face is a heart that loves us unconditionally and with a strong amount of bias. We are THAT person for them. They just want to touch us one more time. Just want to give us one more hug before bedtime, just want us to serve them a little longer. Just one more glass of water.

It's ok to replenish our souls.

"You can't pour from an empty glass" - every mother knows that feeling. That feeling of having nothing left to give and we give anyway. But what are they getting from us once all the love is poured out? If you feel the sting of guilt upon pondering that question, you are not alone. It isn't our best. Our children don't need us to be perfect. They need us to be their peace and in order to be their peace, we must pour some peace back into our glass.

What do you will your glass with?

Meditate or Pray. Spend the first ten minutes of everyday in meditation or prayer. Anxiety is trying to control something that isn't ours to control for too long. Let. It. Go.
Take a walk, sit in your garden, bird watch or go for a scenic drive. Breathe in the beauty that surrounds you. Marvel at nature and the beauty in it. Deeply observe something that you didn't create.
Take a bath - and LOCK THE DOOR.
Lose yourself in a book of your choosing. Not a "how to parent" book - Choose a worthwhile subject and feed your soul! Something you love. Something you've always wanted to learn. Some novel you've been meaning to get to. Preferably while doing number 3.
Throw the schedule out the window for just one day. Spend time with your children. Just sit and talk, cuddle and be present with them. Not rushing to the next thing on your schedule. Cancel it all.
Create - There is a hobby, a craft, an artistic endeavor that you have been wanting to learn, itching to pursue or already have and your heart secretly pines after having the time to just sit. So... just. sit. down.
Forgive someone - dig deep and find something robbing energy from you. Energy that would be better directed in a positive way. Energy that would be better used in your glass as positivity. Let. It. Go.
Journal - write it all out. Get the gel pens out, girl. If poetry interests you, then play with words. If you don't finish, who cares? Write a journal entry, a novel, a recipe. Anything. Use words. Spend some time cultivating a passion within your heart. YOUR passion. Not. someone. else's.
Music has healing qualities. Whatever music speaks to you - lose yourself in it. Put on headphones -- while you're sitting on the couch, while you do the dishes, turn it up loud while you clean.
Serve someone else. Choose one thing you can do this week that helps another person that is not your family. I don't mean feeding the homeless - or maybe I do. It's your heart, not mine. Only do this one if it truly replenishes your soul - really dig deep and make sure it isn't another drain. But sometimes serving someone else doesn't have to mean time or effort. It can mean you checked on another mom who is going through chemo or you offer a shoulder to another mother when you are up -- and she is down. This might be the most important soul-feeder on this list! Build a circle of moms who uplift you - and uplift them back.
Go on a picnic or go for ice cream. Mom dates with our kids. No friends. Don't put a picture on Facebook. Just you and your children. Make it a regular thing. The goal is to enjoy time in the sunshine and realize that it's ok for moms to live in the present, not in anticipation for the future or dread for the past. Really enjoy this moment. Right now. Hint - Your children likely already are - It's YOU who is lost in time. Get on their wave-length.
Late night star gazing. There is something about looking up at the stars to make us realize how small we truly are - and in comparison, how small our problems truly are. Let. It. Go. Even if it is just 20 minutes.
Fitness - Yoga, running, walking, Tai Bo, Zumba - just move and get those endorphins pumping! It's literally God's happy juice.
Dream. Spend time with yourself. Ask yourself one question. What do I want to accomplish? I always felt guilty for admitting that I do this, but it is read wrongly sometimes. This doesn't always mean we are thinking for selfish gain - but sometimes it is. It is goal setting. Ask yourself what you want to accomplish today, this week, this month. Have a plan of action. Organize your thoughts. Brain dump. Get a pen and a journal and dump it all into the journal. Then organize it. Then organize it some more. How can you make your dream into a reality?
Go to bed. I know that as mothers we are raring at the bit for that 1-2 hours after everyone else goes to bed. It really does further a vicious cycle of going to bed late and waking up tired. Make sure that you're getting enough rest.

Preferred Yarn: Hobby Lobby I love this yarn!

(I have also used Caron Simply Soft with an I hook to meet gauge. I find that softer yarns are better suited for charity donations as they are more complimentary to soft skin types like babies, but I have met gauge with Red Heart Super Saver and Caron One Pound with an H hook as well)

A Note about Technique (The Golden Loop Method): This is not just for amigurumi items; it will help in ALL areas where crochet is involved. (Although, it helps most with amigurumi because of the nature of tight stitching.) I know I often hear of people having trouble “making their stitches tight enough” or they frequently have problems matching gauge (even if their items turn out okay on sizing, it doesn’t necessarily mean there isn’t improvement to be made.) I too had many problems when learning to create amigurumi objects when I first started out. Cosmopolitan 6 Inch Granny Square

Materials:

K Hook

Preferred Yarn: Hobby Lobby I love this yarn

(I am usually able to meet gauge easily with Caron Simply Soft – To use Caron Super Saver or Red Heart Super Saver, go down to a J hook to try and meet gauge.)

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Measuring tape (to check gauge)

Skill level: Beginner

Gauge:

With K hook:

2’’ x 2’’ square = 6 dc x 3 rows

Tips: THIS IS ONE OF THE ONLY PATTERNS YOU WILL SEE FROM ME IN WHICH THE CH 3 AT THE BEGINNING OF A DC ROUND DOES IN FACT COUNT AS THE FIRST STITCH IN THE ROUND. PLEASE TAKE NOTE OF THIS!

HOWEVER, THE CH1 FOR THE SC AND HDC EDGING DOES NOT COUNT AS THE FIRST ST. SO YOU WILL CH1, AND SC OR HDC IN THE SAME STITCH AS YOU COMPLETED THE CHAIN 1.

With K hook and Dark Pink.

Ch 5, join to form a circle.

Round 1: Ch 3 (Counts as first st here and throughout pattern) 2dc in circle, ch2,

(3dc, ch 2), RPT () 2 more times, and join to top of chain 3.

St count: [(4) ch2 sp corners and (4) 3dc sides)

This is what it should look like up until here.

Then sl st in next 2 dc sts with dark pink.

To color change for the next round: Begin to sl st in ch 2 by inserting your hook into the ch 2 sp and complete the sl st with white by pulling up white yarn when you pull your hook back through the ch 2 sp and through. This allows you to color change almost seamlessly.

To weave in ends: Cut Dark Pink yarn about 2 to 3 inches long at the back of the work to make sure you have enough room to weave in ends. Make sure to leave about 2 to 3 inches at the beginning of the white yarn as well. (So at each yarn beginning, and each yarn end, you should have about 2 to 3 inches of unused yarn to weave in so that the work does not unravel – tying a knot or just crocheting over ends may unravel at some point. Then sl st in next 2 dc sts with dark pink.

Color change to Light Pink in ch 2 sp corner the same as you did in round 1, making sure to leave

both beginning and end yarn ends 2-3 inches long so that you can weave in ends properly.

Round 3: Ch 3, 2dc in ch2 sp, ch2, 3dc in ch 2 sp, ch2, 3dc in side ch 2 sp, ch2,

([3dc, ch 2, 3dc] in ch2 sp, ch2, 3dc in side ch 2 sp, ch2),

RPT () 2 more times and join to top of chain 3.

St count: [(4)-(3dc, ch2, 3dc) corners and (4)-(ch2, 3dc, ch2) sides]

Then sl st in next 2 dc sts with light pink.

DO NOT Color change – Continue on with Light Pink.

Round 4: Ch 1, 3sc in corner ch 2 sp, (sc in each dc, 3sc in each ch 2 sp),

Then begin a sl st in next sc st and finish the sl st with Dark Brown to color change.

Then begin a sl st in next hdc st and finish the sl st with Light Brown to color change.

**If for some reason you would like an 8 inch square, simply complete one more round between rounds 3 and 4 in another color,

Key Lanyards for Teacher or Nurse

Lots of different jobs require you to wear a lanyard for security and identification purposes. However, often these lanyards can be boring. Some businesses and institutions require you to wear one of their custom branded lanyards, but others will allow you to use whichever lanyard you please. So I thought I would post a tutorial for how to make your own lanyard so you can make something a bit more personal to you.

Materials:

H Hook

Preferred Yarn: Red Heart Super Saver

Tapestry needle

Scissors

Measuring tape (to check gauge)

Key Chain Ring

Key Clip

Pearl for flower center if desired

Skill level: Beginner

Gauge:

With H hook:

2” x 2” square = 7hdc by 5 rows

Tips: Ch 1, Ch 2, or Ch 3 turning chain at the beginning of the round does not count as first stitch. First stitch in the round will be in the same stitch as the turning chain.

PICK UP THIRD LOOPS OF HDC FOR ENTIRE PATTERN.

(This makes the lanyard more sturdy, so that it can hold more weight.

You may also just do a regular hdc if you feel more comfortable doing that and it will work.)

Neck Length:

Insert hook and yarn into circle of key chain ring. 3sc in circle, turn

Row 1-100: Ch 1, hdc in each across, turn (3)

FO and fold like picture and then sew to back of first row.

You may also sl st to attach back across last row if you don’t want to finish off.

Whichever you decide to do, make sure it is attached to through the 1^st row of sc.

This was written for an average sized woman. (Should fit comfortably around a woman’s neck who has a 22 inch head) You may want to add more rows for larger women or men. Remember, it must fit over their head and you want it not to be tight around the neck. It is better to be longer than too short!

Wrist Length:

Insert hook and yarn into circle of key chain ring. 3sc in circle, turn

Row 1-30: Ch 1, hdc in each across, turn (3)

FO and fold like picture and then sew to back of first row.

You may also sl st to attach back across last row if you don’t want to finish off.

This was written for an average sized woman. (Should fit comfortably around a woman’s wrist who has a 7 inch wrist) You may want to add more rows for larger women or men. Sl st in circle with contrasting color, then sl st into side of lanyard and sc around

(Do this on both sides of lanyard)

Large Flower for neck lanyard:

With light color

Round 1: 6sc in mc, join (6)

Color change to dark contrasting color in join

Round 2: Ch 1, (sc, ch2), RPT () around, join to first sc (6 ch2 sps)

Sl st into next ch 2 sp

Round 3: (Ch2, 3dc, ch2, sl st into next ch 2 sp), RPT () around (6 petals)

Sew pearl to center and attach to lanyard.

Small Flower for wrist lanyard:

With light color

Round 1: 5sc in mc, join (5)

Color change to dark contrasting color in join

Round 2: Ch 1, (sc, ch1), RPT () around, join to first sc (5 ch1 sps)

Sl st into next ch 2 sp

Round 3: (Ch1, 2dc, ch1, sl st into same ch 1 sp, sl st into next ch 1 sp), RPT () around

(5 petals)

First Live Video – Package Unveiling 5/27/16

Today was a special day. I got a message from my Dad’s favorite aunt on Facebook the other day. I was excited to talk to her anyway because I never really have, and she is quite special to my father. But she offered me some of her mother’s crocheted items! I was so excited to open it, but I decided to wait and share this special moment with my followers and fans. So this is the unveiling of my GREAT AUNT’S work. When I pass these on to my daughter, they will be her GREAT GREAT AUNT’S work, and HER baby’s GREAT GREAT GREAT AUNT’S work. So that’s pretty unique to have a generational line of crocheters like that and I was proud to share them with you guys.

She never followed a pattern, so these were of her own making. I want to pick them apart and share the pattern with you guys because they are just beautiful. When I have that available you’ll know!

Also, I shared my intentions on having a father’s day giveaway to honor our men crocheters (really because I felt bad about leaving them out since I talk so much about empowering women through crochet). I know of a few who are always there to support us and I feel like they should be honored as well for father’s day because I feel like maybe we forget them or they don’t get included sometimes!
