]]>Join us for an uplifting evening of sacred music in Cadenza’s annual Easter charity concert series — this year in aid of St Columba’s Hospice and St Michael’s Church, Linlithgow.
Spanning five centuries, the programme moves from Bach to Britten, Monteverdi to Mendelssohn, showcasing the full breadth of choral expression. Highlights include the purity of Byrd’s Renaissance polyphony, the expressive depth of Bach, the rich Romantic warmth of Rachmaninoff, and the shimmering contemporary voices of Caroline Shaw and Arvo Pärt.

- Fauré — Cantique de Jean Racine
- Franck — Panis Angelicus
- Caroline Shaw — and the swallow

From timeless carols like Once in Royal David’s City and O Come All Ye Faithful to exquisite choral gems such as Rorate Cœli by Jacobus Handl and Jesus Christ the Apple Tree by Elizabeth Poston, the evening spans centuries of Christmas music, celebrating its depth and warmth.
Richard Rodney Bennett’s evocative Five Carols form a centrepiece, and the rest of the programme is filled with a selection of other seasonal pieces, both familiar, and less familiar. Sit back, enjoy the music, and a glass of something during the interval, and get into the Christmas spirit with us.

If you have followed Cadenza for a while, you will know how much we all enjoy our Christmas concert. Which is why we were disappointed to have to cancel our 2020 performance and run a reduced-length (and capacity) concert in 2021, both as a result of the Covid pandemic. However, for 2022 we are delighted to say that our festive extravaganza returns to normality!
Our new Musical Director, Timothy Coleman, has programmed a wonderful mix of old and new, including music by Benjamin Britten, Hector Berlioz, John Tavener, Gustav Holst, James Macmillan and John Rutter, amongst others. Accompanying Cadenza on piano and organ, we are thrilled to welcome back the ever-present Morley Whitehead.
We welcome two guest soloists, mezzo-soprano Lea Shaw and baritone Andrew MacTaggart. We also invite you to enjoy some seasonal refreshments, enter our raffle and – of course – enjoy an evening of wonderful music too!
The concert is on Saturday 17 December, 7.30pm, at Polwarth Parish Church. Tickets can be bought from choir members, direct from our Concert Manager (07903 104 557) or via Eventbrite (note: additional fees apply for Eventbrite). We expect to have some tickets available on the door, but advance booking is always recommended to guarantee your space.

Previously a Fellow with the National Youth Choir of Great Britain, and a Young Conducting Scholar with Sing for Pleasure. As well as conductor of Cadenza, he is currently the conductor with the Colinton and Merchiston Community Choir, and assistant conductor with the Dalkeith Serenata Singers. He has previously conducted the Athenaeum Singers, Risca Choral Society and the Taffs Well Community Choir, amongst others.
Timothy is also active as a singer, currently as a lay clerk with the Choir of St Mary’s Cathedral. We look forward to what the future holds for us as he has hit the ground running, and we are now well into rehearsing for our upcoming Christmas concert.
