Remember the excitement that birthdays used to evoke? The thrill of funfetti frosting, the ecstasy of ALL THOSE PRESENTS and knowing that, probably, maybe, a Spice Girls CD was in there somewhere? These days, birthdays are more of a trigger for anxiety than excitement for us, but improv group IRTE wants to bring back the fun. Birthday cake, games, and prizes abound in this improvised birthday party for grownups.

Solutions for design problems get plenty of attention. That basically describes the function of every TED Talk you’ve ever watched. But what about solutions to design problems that don’t exist? Sat 14: Brooklyn Bike Rave

Two things you should know about me. One is obvious, one is not so obvious. First: I am an avid cyclist. I have the road bike (Warrior Princess Xela- don’t you judge me) and I have the padded shorts. Second: I used to be a raver. I had the UFO pants and the shitty plastic bracelets and the ability to dance until 5:00 AM. While the idea of doing that now sounds like an absolutely barftastic proposition, this bike “rave” sounds awesome. The money goes to supporting Brooklyn Greenway Initiative, which connects bikers and pedestrians to the waterfront. It’s only a seven mile ride (a veeeery slow hour-long trip) so put on your craziest outfit, listen to some party music, and get riding!

Sat 14: The Bowery Cannabis Club Storytelling Session

The Alchemist’s Kitchen, 21 East 1 St, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, $5 advance/$10 door
I really wanted to call this event “Weed Stories!” but I decided to be ~professional.~ You know how a lot of the stories you tell a group of people start with “oh God, I was so high…?” Well, I have news for you. Those stories are not so great. I get that you thought your roommate’s bed was your bed, but at the end of the day it was still a bed. These storytellers, however, have real stories of adventure, of mayhem, and of the ups and downs of that sort-of-not-quite-smell-it-everywhere plant we all know and love.

I am not a car person. As I have written in this post and elsewhere, I am a bicycle person, and sometimes a kayak person. Occasionally I am a ski person. These things, however, are rarely featured in vintage shows, for a very good reason. Vintage cars are way, way cooler. Check out awesome vehicles ranging from across the decades and check out a neighborhood you might not have known existed before this Sunday. AwOOOOga!

Holy frijoles, have you BEEN outside this week? I went on a date with a dude who said he spent the entire last weekend inside playing Civilization and I basically dumped him on the spot. This week’s events will get you out into that spring air, from a night market in Queens to a daffodil party in the Bronx. Enjoy, and put that computer away for a while!

Queens, that place Prince Eddie Murphy famously went to find his bride in Coming to America, celebrates its amazing diversity with this astounding night market that you absolutely must check out. Foods from places like “Korea, Tibet, Brazil, Indonesia, Malaysia, Morocco, Portugal, Guatemala, China, Vietnam, Trinidad, Chile, Japan, Peru, Canada, Jamaica, Myanmar, Hong Kong, the Philippines, Colombia, Romania, and others” will be represented, so even your pickiest friends will find something to love.

Sat 23: The Cast: Game of Thrones Edition

OMG, Game of Thrones is coming back. Time to find that one friend you don’t talk to anymore and shamelessly invite yourself over so you can watch the premier on their HBO. In preparation for this glorious event, check out The Cast’s sendup of some pretend-medieval madness. The Cast is comprised of eight(ish) incredibly talented women, who present a dual-sided performance of what goes on behind the scenes as well as the show itself. Don’t miss it.

Sun 24: Daffodils and Wine at the NY Botanical Garden

It’s daffodil season, something I know for certain because I rescued a daffodil plant from a hotel garbage area and it’s now blooming gorgeously in planty thanks. Staring at my menagerie of plants is a good way to celebrate spring FINALLY being here in full force, but drinking wine and enjoying the daffodils of the NY Botanical Garden is a much better way! Evens include tastings, wine talks, tours, and live music.

Sun 25: Travelogue: Free Storytelling Event

Sure, you’ve seen the picture of him giving a thumbs up in front of Machu Picchu. Sure, he’s seen that picture of you bottle-feeding a doped up baby tiger. But have you ever told each other the stories behind those experiences? In addition to enjoying hearing from seasoned storytellers, attendees also get the opportunity to share their own poem, photo, essay, song, or whatever that reflects their stories of travel. Also, drink specials!

Ask anyone who has been watching Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt this week (it’s finals week at my university so I haven’t been on the Season 2 boat yet), Jane Krakowski is one of the highlights of any show involving a bunch of weirdos. Fearless and possessing an intense mastery of timing, this is an actress you shouldn’t miss the opportunity to hear speak, especially for free!

Tues 26: Astronomy Live at the AMNH

At! The stars! The most romantic thing of all to look at, next to the ocean and a lover’s semi-clothed body. Unfortunately, we live in a (wonderful) city where the stars cannot be easily glimpsed. Ah! But great fortune! We also have one of the best planetariums in the g-d WORLD, and we get to hear fancy-shmance scientists like Jana Grcevich and Irene Pease explain it to us. Join this week as these speakers delve into the “various dangers of space that could destroy us” (ooh!) and how our gravitational and magnetic fields protect us (aah!)

There’s a theme to this week’s events: comic books and acting out in toddler-like defiance to the “storm of the century” (so shut up about it, Mom.) Strap on your winter boots, grab a flask of something warming and LET’S GET OUT THERE!

Alongside the… crawfish boil… (I’m sorry, I really can’t stop looking at that picture and fainting with hunger) there will be 2-for-1 drink specials, dancing, and a New Orleans-style brass band playing long into the night.

Sat 23: Free DIY Comics Workshop

Are you an artist? Do you think your ideas are interesting enough to put to paper? Do you just like comic books and want to know more about the production side? Come to “Vulnerable Paper, Loud Speech Bubbles,” a free DIY comics workshop!

This class, led by Vienna-based puppeteer, sculptor, and comic book artist Nina Prader, is part of the amazing-looking exhibit Our Comics, Ourselves: Identity, Expression, and Representation in Comic Art, which you should absolutely check out after you and your date enjoy learning about bookmaking techniques, printing, and distribution.

Sat 23: 90’s Bar Crawl

Ace of Base. Nirvana. Green Day. Being relentlessly bullied. Oh what wonderful things the concept of the 90’s conjures! Ignoring that last bit, this bar crawl sounds like a lot of fun. Sick of hearing how it’s gonna snow all day on Saturday? Stick it to the snow! Get out there and crawl it up, NYC!

Sun 24: Game Day! at Freddy’s Bar and Backroom 

Freddy’s Bar and Backroom, 627 5th Ave, Brooklyn, 4:00 PM – 8:00 PM, Free

Look, Freddy’s is just a place you should be going to, and this is a really fun excuse to get over there. Not only is the bar itself a trip- it’s been around for over 70 years, has super yummy burgers and fries, and it’s got a damn fish tank FULL OF FROGS in the back- but it’s also the host of a ton of great live music, comedy, and performances.

They also host Obsolete Cinema, a group who shows old movies monthly along with their happy hour specials, which sounds like the perfect thing to do on a snow-covered, chilly Sunday afternoon. The theme for this month is “Game Day!” and boy do they have some late 70’s doozies planned for it. Remember when Paul Newman was more of an actor than a face on salad dressing? Neither do I, which is why this event sounds so enticing.

Mon 25: Go Antiquing 

Demolition Depot and Irreplaceable Artifacts, 216 E 125th St, 10:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Free to Look

When I saw that the Park Slope Armory was having a big fancy antiques event, I wanted to let Mesh Blog readers know about it… buuuut I don’t know if you all have $2,500 to spend on priority coat check, so I decided to find something a bit more humble.

Not too much more humble, though- despite its wacky exterior, Demolition Depot can be very expensive, so take your time wandering its 4 (!!!) stories, see if you find something you absolutely must have, and let the experience be the experience rather than expecting to find something you can afford. If you’re lucky, you might get to spot one of the multitude of cats that wanders around the store!

Tues 26: Crisis: an Improvised Comic Book 

PIT Loft, 154 W 29th St., 9:00 PM, $5

Two things New Yorkers love: improv and comic books. At least, that’s what the insane sell-out attendance of Comic Con and the fact that a FIFTH improv company offering classes just opened (welcome to the family, Reckless Theater!) leads me to believe.

Well, it’s finally time to enjoy these two phenomenal art forms together. Crisis has been around for over a year now, and they’ve come to master the art of creating a fantastic new comic book story based on an audience suggestion.

Spoiler alert: one of the members looks and sounds almost exactly like Ghostbuster-era Dan Aykroyd. WHICH ONE? You’ll have to check out the show to find out!

Wed 27: Jürgen Klauke: Transformer: Photoworks from the 1970s

Koenig & Clinton, 459 W 19th St, 11:00 AM – 6:00 PM, Free 

This exhibit, comprised of experimental photography by German Jürgen Klauke, shows the artist in various subversive forms, questioning ideas such as androgyny, sexuality, and identity. This is a great opportunity to check out one of the many excellent small art galleries in Manhattan. You can make an artistic afternoon of it, also checking out the gorgeous Hiroki Tsukuda exhibit at the Petzel Gallery a few blocks away.

Your date not so into free, contemporary art? Chelsea Market’s a few short blocks away. Anyone can be tempted into sophistication with the promise of a lobster roll.

Thurs 28: Bronx International Film Festival

The Studio Theater, 250 Bedford Park Blvd, 6:00 PM – 10:00 PM, $7

$7 doesn’t get you a lot anymore. It gets you an IPA at most bars, not including the tip. It’ll get you most of the way to a Crunch Wrap Supreme meal at Taco Bell. It’ll get you two 2 Broz “2 slices and a coke” specials.

(sidebar: does anyone know why my pants don’t fit me anymore?)

It will also get you in to a night of really innovative, interesting film in the Bronx. Thursday’s fare illuminates the brain life of a dancer with Parkinson’s, the work of a landscape artist, and a Spanish take on Hitler’s invasion of Leningrad.

Sat 9: Learn about Herbs at Wave Hill

One thing about the winter: its dry as hell. I’ve invested in some Vaseline Body Spray for the winter, but it might just not be enough. For the cost of what you’d spend on the products themselves, you and a friend can learn about the herbs and oils that go into your favorite products.

Make sure you get there early to spend the morning at Wave Hill, a gorgeous park with 28 acres of land overlooking the Hudson.

SAT 9: Trapped In The Room With a Zombie

“Escape the Room” outings have become incredibly popular, and it’s obvious why. Fun clues lead teams to discover a way to get out of their trap, and teams that do so in a fixed amount of time win the game. What could be more fun than that?

A zombie.

Every few minutes, a zombie lurches closer to you… unless you get out of the room in time. Hug your date close but don’t take too much time. You gotta get outta there!

SUN 10: No Pants Subway Ride

It’s finally here: the day you and some buddies can show off the cute underwear you’ve been hoarding. Literally all you have to do to participate in one of the quirkier New York City traditions is take off your pants, though Improv Everywhere would appreciate an RSVP.

I had an ex who claimed the only tough part about No Pants Subway Ride is when you’re the only one in your undies on the train, but I think he enjoyed it. A bit of an exhibitionist, that one.

MON 11 Check Out the Against the Run Clock

If you don’t look closely, you can miss a lot of what our beautiful city has to offer. Polish artist Alicja Kwade has created a clock that runs on its side, forcing us to look at it from a different angle if we want to get what we need from it.

We can make the same connection to Central Park as well. It’s not it bursting, spring self, or it’s sultry summer self, or even it’s festive Christmas self, but it’s still a remarkable, gorgeous place to spend a few hours strolling along on a Monday afternoon with a loved one, and the Against the Run clock is a great place to start that stroll.

TUES 12 Sign Up for a ZogSport

Alright, this one’s a bit of a cheat as you could do it any day, but really, you can’t go wrong with signing up for a ZogSports league in these cold winter months when the sun sets early and physical activity is hard to come by. Are you and your friend or date interested in indoor soccer? Okay, casual or competitive? Is dodgeball more your thing? Looking for something a little less sporty? Alright, how about corn hole?

This one definitely falls under the category of “great with a date, even better without.” Make new friends, stay in shape, and have a great time- even in the bitter cold season!

WED 13 Mega-Team of Improv: Pod Luck of Conversation

Pit Underground, 123 E 24th St, 7:00 PM, $5

Brian Hansbury stars in this one-man improv show that just about every improviser I know who’s seen it has told me I must see. I had Brian in my Level 3 Musical Improv class, and he was one of those guys who everyone mentions with an air of “Oh that guy? Yeah, he’s getting on a team. It’s only a matter of which one.” He’s that mixture of talented and attractive that would make you really angry if he wasn’t so goshdamned nice.

I will be in the audience for this show myself, so I can’t give a much description description that Brian’s own words: “Brian Hansbury presents a one man show about how to deal with fear. He couches his argument in the voice of a charismatic Floridian evangelist who dropped acid at the same time he was finishing an improv class.”

Just trust me. It’s gonna be good.

THURS 14 Zhang Hongtu at the Queens Museum

Queens Museum, New York City Building, Flushing Meadows, 12:00 PM – 6:00 PM, $8

There’s something so incredibly fascinating about China, even as it’s opened itself to the Western world through tourism and political machinations. I lived in Korea for five years, visited visited China twice, live a short bus ride from one of the biggest Chinatowns in the United States, and have taught Chinese students for three years now, but I still feel like I know almost nothing about the country.

This exhibit shows us a peek of China’s immense history through the lens of a man who lived through the Cultural Revolution as an artist. Even a quick glimpse at some of his art shows how complicated and intense that journey must have been.

Head over to Flushing’s Chinatown afterward for some of the best Chinese food your taste buds have ever experienced.

Anyone who owns a light saber (Facebook calls this a BYOL event) is welcome to come and mingle in bonkers, frenzied joy with other fans, gently bashing one another with plastic swords. This blog promises nothing regarding spoilers so you should probably go out and see The Force Awakens before you head over to THE BATTLE, but the group will mosey on over to a theater afterward to watch the movie, so maybe you can just fight while wearing ear plugs?!

Either way, may the force be with you!

FRI 18: You Are Not Alone for the Holidays! An Uplifting Show about Depression

The holidays can be rough, right? Although statistics show that suicides actually do not go up during the holidays, this is a season when stress triggers can be immense and loneliness acute. This show addresses issues of mental health through essays read by those who have suffered from depression, anxiety, and a host of other often stigmatized conditions, and responds to them with humor and love. It starts from a difficult place, and ends in a group hug.

If this all sounds too intense (it’s not- it’s actually very funny) you can always stick around for a hilarious night improvised musicals,  fast-paced audience interactive comedy, and yelling jokes at TV.

FRI 18: Bierhaus NYC Ugly Christmas Sweater Contest

SUN 20: The Amazing Holiday Scavenger Hunt

You always hear that people fall in love more readily while doing exciting things. While just day-to-day life in NYC is already pretty exciting (does that man have a pet pigeon? Did his pet pigeon just attack me?!?) it’s a pretty good bet that a 3-hour scavenger hunt all over Manhattan is gonna get that endorphins flowing and seratonin pumping. I once did one of these NYC scavenger events with an ex and while we fought rather tensely about the most efficient strategy for completing the tasks, the photos we got once we were finished were worth every snippy word.

The gift package includes all sorts of cool events-related prizes like tickets to a Quiet Clubbing event, so there’s every reason to hope for even more exciting activities!

MON 21 ITP Winter Show

This is one of those events that, were I not writing this blog, I simply would never have heard of. Now that I’m scouring the Internet for events, though, I am filled with a mad need to attend this show. It sounds amazing. I mean, take a look at their project list. There’s a singing plant, a homemade robotic hand, and something called BoomChaCha, where “three players will fight together against monsters, with magical weapons in their hands.”

On an embarrassing note, it took me a full 6 minutes of internet research to figure out that ITP stands for. It stands for Interactive Telecommunications Program. Come this Monday and make fun of me for my poor Wikipedia skills.

TUES 22 Santa’s Corner at Bryant Park

I know, I know, we sent you to Bryant Park last week, but Santa wasn’t there. Look, we’ve got to do all we can to get into the Christmas spirit with bros walking around in wife beaters in December. There’s a Santa parade with Christmas carolers from 1:00- 1:45, so you can sing your little jing-jing-jingely heart out before you get a present with the big guy.

Stop by the vendors when you’re done to buy all of those Secret Santa gift exchange I know you haven’t gotten to yet. Don’t be stingy about tax. Yes, that $20 box of chocolate truffles is gonna run you around $22 when you’re done, but don’t go hunting for some $18 tchotchke to compensate. Your Santa will know, and your Santa will seek revenge.

WED 23 Soup Kitchen 2015

Open Source Gallery, 306 17th street, Brooklyn, 7:00 PM – 9:00 PM, free

There are some idealistic, insane people who think that this holiday is about something other than madly chucking gifts at one another. For those of you who feel this way, Soup Kitchen 2015 might just be you. This month-long event is meant to draw together a community of “artists, cooks, friends, and neighbors” for a one-pot free meal with free conversation. Every night, the cook of the evening also incorporates an artisic performance, which can range from a performance art piece to a play to a one-night exhibit.

While the event is happening all month, Wednesday’s meal of curry pumpkin soup sounds particularly delightful, so head on over and meet some new friends. While you’re there, get some information on this small but impressive gallery’s 2016 season. I know the soap box derby is eight months away, but I got unnecessarily excited when I read about it.

THURS 24 Christmas Eve Caroling

It’s gettin’ real Christmasy around here, you guys. This is partially because Christmas seems to be winning the war against itself, and partially because there just weren’t so many Hanukkah or Kwanzaa events I could find in my extensive activity search. Please! If you know of any, let me know! I would go to a latke party every day of the week.

In the meantime, let’s enjoy a magic show, some ice skating, and some festive parties!

FRI 11 A Christmas Carol Entirely from Memory 

TaDa! Theater, 15 West 28th Street, 8:00 PM, $10

I am full of Scrooge-like rage that I was not invited to perform in this insane-sounding Christmas fiesta. Eight actors perform A Christmas Carol based on various film adaptations, including A Muppet Christmas Carol and Scrooge McDuck. The audience gets to play along, too, writing lines that the performers must use and using a horn that forces the performers to spontaneously create a new scene. Be sure to get your tickets in advance, or the Ghost of Christmas Future will show you a night shivering in a Korea town restaurant, slamming soju and eating barbeque with Scrooge-less tears running down your face. That actually sounds pretty fun, but still, go see this awesome show.

FRI 11 Brooklyn Comedy Festival and Coat Drive

Knitting Factory Brooklyn, 361 Metropolitan Ave, 8:30-?, $10 in advance, $15 at the door

This show sounds amazing, and not just because I had to google what a chambong was to fully understand it. There’s a live reenactment of holiday stories by a 6 year-old, which I simply cannot even imagine, stand up galore, and a holiday rendition of “Your Love, The Musical,” a show that often sells out for tickets that cost more than what you’ll pay at the door for this and a score of other seasonal entertainment. Want more incentive to go? By bringing your gently used coat to donate, you can win a very strange novelty drinking apparatus. Okay, I’m not so sold on that aspect, but holy crap, everything else sounds amazing. Give the coat cuz you’re a good person, ya schmuck!

Also, their poster for this event is so cute it hurts my insides.

SAT 12 2nd Annual Sip & Shop 

Brooklyn Artists & Fleas, 70 N 7th St, 5:00, Free until you see a clock made from a book 

I love this place so much. The last time I went to Artists and Fleas, I walked out with a gorgeous, locally-made leather work backpack for around half of what I had seen at any other place. The first hundred folks who show up get a free “swag” bag, which sounds great, but really, the reason for the season is finding cute gifts made by folks who work hard to do something they love.

Also, drinks! Drinking and shopping! Drinking and shopping and crafts, ho ho!

SAT 12 MoMA PS1 Night at the Museum

MoMA PS 1, 22-25 Jackson Avenue, 9:00 PM – 12:00 AM, $12

When I read the description for this event, I was a bit surprised. For a minute, I dated a very sweet, severely hipster artist who lived in LIC who described PS1 events as being pretty insane- dancing, mass crowds of people, all that. This event promises to be “cozy” and “festive” featuring music and Quebecois fine dining, which I didn’t realize existed. Bottom line: for $12 each, you and a date (or good buddy) get to feel cultured and refined as hell. Go get it!

SAT 12 Santacon

Manhattanish, Saturday, Free till your friend has to bail you out of jail for getting wasted and beating up a flock of pigeons 

“Umm…” you whisper, “Jessica… isn’t a flock of sweaty humans wearing Santa suits getting wasted and packing into bars together something approximating your worst nightmare?”

Yes. You are right. But this is an events blog, and you have to know that this is happening. Whether you wear a red suit and haunt my nightmares or go do one of these other events is up to you. Mostly, I guess this post is just to let you know that you haven’t suffered a psychotic break if you see a sea of beer-soaked red polyester floating your way.

SUN 13 Best Friends Super Adoption

BestFriends.org’s description for this event reads, “Picture this: You’re surrounded by hundreds of adorable dogs, puppies, kittens and bunnies.” Here’s the thing. I cannot picture this, because my head will explode out of terminal cuteness. An ex of mine once casually stood in front of me, blocking my view of the street. When I asked him why, he explained “there’s a disabled dog in a wheelchair over there and we don’t have time for you to go nuts over it right now.”

You don’t have to be in the market for an animal to attend this squeal-inducing event. There’s a lottery, a bunch of gifts to buy, and pictures with Santa!

Plus… c’mon. You know your landlord wouldn’t really mind if you had a dog.

MON 14 Monday Night Magic

Knife-throwing, tattooed ladies in high heels, disappearing doves- yep, folks, this is old school magic, none of that winkwink Penn & Teller business we tend to see today. To get a feeling for the throwback goodness of this presentation, just check out the website, linked above. Be prepared to take a trip back to the year 1998!

I would categorize this event as being “perfect for out-of-town parents who want to see a show but aren’t that fond of musicals.” It would also be great for “that date who’s a little jaded and wants to see something adorable and fun.” I mean, check out the lineup for this week!

I’ve sung this piece. Picture me, wearing suffocatingly tight black pants in a church in Korea, rolling my classical R’s and simultaneously melting at how gorgeous the soloists were and plotting ways to murder them so I could take over their parts and sing them so, so much worse.

Look, you don’t have to be down with Jesus (I’m not) to agree that this piece is pure Christmas perfection. Check it out by professionals, or you could always head over to Immaculate Heart of Mary with me this Friday for a sing-a-long.

I’m agnostic, but I’m about to spend the entire day shouting this entire thing to passersby. “The Q train arrived just as I got to the platform! KING OF KINGS!!! AND LORD OF LORDS!!!

Look, Bryant Park has a frickin’ winter village. The only other place that has that is the North Pole and it’s too cold to ice skate there. Eat some food, hold hands, buy some crafty presents, and head out on the ice! Did you know that it’s ~free~ to skate? They getcha on the skate rental, but heck, ’tis the season.

If you’re super baller, spring for Fast Passes ($22-$28,) which gets you VIP admission (I assume they kiss your skates,) skate rentals and bag check for two.

THURS 17 Picture with the Rockefeller Christmas Tree

Picture this. All the above nonsense, only you and some cutie honey with your arms around each other in the forefront. A warning: unless you get there at some odd hour (5:30 AM would be an odd hour- can you believe it opens at 5:30? Those poor chilly guards.) you’re gonna be fighting for space. Get in, get the picture, get out.

Your friends are posting pictures of the first snowfalls of the season, but New York remains unseasonably warm. Take advantage of the above-zero temperatures and sunny skies with a walk around the New York Botanical Garden or Dyker Heights for some Christmas Lights, or retreat into the Natural History Museum for some educational fun!

FRI 4 First Friday! Transitions

Music and dance performances combine with a photography exhibit titled Transitions: New Photography from Bangladesh. Curator Ayesha Akhtar leads tours through the exhibit. Free refreshments are served and visitors are welcome to join in a moderated discussion. Worth the trip just for a glimpse at some truly gorgeous outfits!

SAT 5 – SUN 6 Etsy New York’s 8th Annual Holiday Handmade Cavalcade

Do you have a pillow with a bird on it? How about a tote bag with adorable little squares on it? Etsy is an unstoppable juggernaut of charm and whimsy and you might as well give in to your need to have more cute things in your home… or more cute things to casually gift that cute temp you’ve been eyeing. Hey, better yet, bring that temp along take advantage of this unseasonably warm weather we’ve been having to pop on your new artisanal hat and take a walk on the High Line. Cutely.

SAT 5 The Cast: Soap Opera Edition

Magnet Theater, 254 West 29th St, 10:30 PM, $10

In a city clogged with improv, it can be hard to find something truly innovative. The Cast‘s premise is simple: it’s a group of very talented individuals who dive into a specific genre every week, and destroy it with complete dedication. Their Wrestling Edition show featured women doing full body slams posting pictures of their bruises afterward. Their Dance Company edition featured gymnastic contorting. Other “editions” have included Children’s Theater, Mamet, and Stand Up Open Mic. This week’s promises “the live taping of a soap opera,” and the Facebook event hints at ghosts, fake Spanish accents, and adopted daughters. Come early- this one gets crowded.

SAT 5 Sixth Annual Battle of the Belgians 

Jimmy’s No. 43, 43 E 7th St, New York, NY 10003, 1:00-4:00 PM, $65

Treat yourself (and your partner, if you’re feeling generous) to this all-inclusive Belgian beer event, featuring over 20 beers to sample and judge along with whole roasted hogs and vegetarian options. East Village staple Jimmy’s No. 43 has lots of fun events happening this holiday season. If you’re interested in their $25 unlimited servings Christmas Lunch you’d be wise to order early.

SUN 6 Milstein Science Series: Ocean Locomotion

The American Museum of Natural History, Central Park West at 79th Street, 11:00 AM-4:00 PM, $17-$22 suggested admission

There are two excellent reasons to go to check this American Museum of Natural History’s special exhibit. One, it’ll be an exciting and educational romp featuring “performances, live animals and presentations.” Two, you get to hang out with Fabien Cousteau, unnecessarily sexy grandson of famed oceanographic explorer Jacques-Yves Cousteau. Keep in mind that the AMNH is “pay what you will,” but you don’t want to look like a cheapskate who hates science in front of your date (or Fabien, who could be watching.)

MON 7 Holiday Train Show

New York Botanical Garden, 2900 Southern Blvd., 10:00 AM-6:00 PM, $20

I have it on good authority that model train shows are not just for kids. Feel free to shove Little Skyler out of the way as you and some hot squeeze marvel at NYC’s most famous landmarks made out of bark and leaves. If you get tired of this (though frankly, I don’t see how you could) you can feel free to tromp around the garden’s 250 acres, incredibly charming even without their signature leaves (taken for the model landmarks, I presume.)

TUES 8 Brooklyn Christmas Lights

Dyker Heights, apx 79th St to 86th St, from 11th Ave to 13th Ave, Free 

There is no such thing as subtlety in Dyker Heights during the month of December. Although some houses won’t begin decorating until this weekend, there are already houses bedecked with angels who enjoy frolicking with snowmen. Make a night of exploring this old Italian neighborhood with a chicken parm from New Corner.

As your food coma starts to wear off, we’ve got some of the coziest and cheeriest events around town this week to get you back on your feet and into the holiday spirit. From whiskey tours and bazaars, to gingerbread villages and origami trees, snuggle up with a date and raise a hot toddy to the season.

FRI  27 Kings County Distillery Tour

Kings County Distillery, 299 Sands St., Brooklyn; 3pm; $8

We know you’re probably still full of turkey (us too.) How’s warming up that belly with some whiskey sound? For just $8, head to the Brooklyn Navy Yard for a tour of the city’s oldest operating whiskey distillery. See how the folks turn New York grain from the on-site corn and barley patch into homemade moonshine and bourbon. And after you’re done checking out the cooper whiskey stills crafted in Scotland, sample three special spirits including a toasty chocolate whiskey.

With so many holiday markets popping up, how do we pick just one? Hint: we don’t. But in honor of #smallbusinesssaturday, we’re all for checking out the 3rd annual Brooklyn Holiday Bazaar. Curated by Brooklyn Makers, this 2-day event brings over 40 local vendors under this Gowanus roof for artsy, vintage gifts galore. Fill up on food, cocktails, cider and kombucha, jam to a live DJ and get yours hands on a photo booth and craft workshops for the young ‘uns.

SAT 28 The Rub

If you’re ready to get wasted and dance like everyone’s watching (and loving it), we got you. Don’t miss what the Village Voice has deemed the “best party in Brooklyn to dance sweatily to smart music” this weekend ringing in all music lovers and leave-me-alone-I-just-want-to-groove folk. Since 2002, this bash has been beloved for its cheap drinks over bottle service, no dress code, and mix of hip hop, disco, funk and soul. Arrive before midnight to get in for $10.

SUN 29 Give a toy, Go to the zoo!

MON 30 Gingerbread Lane @ New York Hall of Science

Sweeten up your week with this real-life candy wonderland. Breaking his own world record for the largest gingerbread village, Chef Jon Lovitch presents his cookie creations, one year in the making. Stroll over 500 square feet (that’s more 1050 gingerbread houses) of Eggnog Bay, Rum Drop Row, Peppermint Central Park, Toffee Blvd. and even a recreated, candified version of the historic Coney Island carousel. Then, come back on January 10th as Lovitch and the museum turn the edible village into a free for all where guests are welcome to take home pieces of the display.

TUES 1 #GivingTuesday

After your pockets have run dry from Black Friday and Cyber Monday, return the favor this Tuesday at the 4th annual global celebration of giving.
