Nearly 100 golfers gathered in Wisconsin for the eighth annual ‘run because’ Golf Outing, helping raise more than $15,000 for Ménière’s disease research through the American Hearing Research Foundation (AHRF).
The weather could not have been better as approximately 100 golfers gathered in Wisconsin for the eighth annual ‘run because’ Golf Outing.
Across the course, groups of longtime friends, relatives and first-time participants prepared for the day. Some had traveled from as far away as California and North Carolina. Others return every year, knowing this may be the one day when they reconnect with people they have come to know through the outing.
For Katie and her family, seeing everyone together was a reminder of how much this event has grown and how many people continue to show up for a cause that is deeply personal to them.
By the end of the day, the outing had raised more than $15,000 for Ménière’s disease research through the American Hearing Research Foundation, its strongest result yet.
The ‘run because’ Golf Outing began with a suggestion from Katie’s father.
Katie had already started raising money for Ménière’s disease research in honor of her mother, who has lived with the condition for approximately 25 years. Her father saw an opportunity to bring more people into that effort.
What began as an idea for a golf outing has grown into an annual family tradition.
Katie’s father continues to coordinate much of the event. Katie and her mother help bring the details together, while Bobby makes sure signs, printed materials and other behind-the-scenes pieces are organized and ready.
“It’s a real family affair,” Katie said.
Like hosting a small wedding or large family celebration, the outing takes significant planning. But on the day of the event, that work becomes something much bigger than a schedule, a registration list or a round of golf.
It becomes a gathering of people from nearly every part of the family’s life.
As golfers moved through the course, additional guests arrived to participate in the silent auction, wine pull and other activities.
Generous donors contributed auction packages that included stays in Florida and Door County, Wisconsin. With more people attending and bidding, the excitement surrounding the auction continued to build.
The golf outing typically raises approximately $10,000. As this year’s totals came together, it became clear that the event had reached a new level.
More than $15,000 had been raised.
For Katie, the result was both exciting and humbling. She believes the increased support reflects the momentum the outing has developed over eight years.
“A lot of people could make it this time, or made it happen that they could be there,” she said. “There were more people bidding, and we had really generous donors.”
The success was not the result of one contribution or one person. It came from golfers registering, families traveling, donors providing auction items, guests bidding and volunteers giving their time.
Each contribution became part of the final total.
The day also delivered a moment the group will likely be talking about for years.
One golfer was participating in the ‘run because’ outing for the first time. He stepped up to his first hole of the day, took his first swing and recorded a hole-in-one.
The unexpected achievement immediately became one of the most memorable moments in the event’s history.
It was the kind of story that added even more excitement to a day already filled with celebration.
But when Katie thinks about what she enjoys most, it is not one golf shot or auction item that stands out. It is looking around and seeing people from every part of her family’s life gathered in one place.
“People from all parts of my life and my family’s life come and support by donating, golfing and bidding,” Katie said. “We’re so lucky to be surrounded by people who show up and support.”
The spirit of the ‘run because’ Golf Outing is perhaps most visible after the final hole has been played.
People do not immediately collect their things and leave. They stay.
They sit together, have a drink, talk about the day and catch up on everything that has happened since they last saw one another. For some, the golf outing is the only time all year that they are together.
What began as a fundraiser has become its own community, one that returns each year because its members care about Katie’s family, enjoy being together and believe in the purpose behind the event.
That willingness to stay, reconnect and keep showing up is what makes the outing meaningful.
The amount raised measures the event’s financial success. The conversations, relationships and people gathered around the family reveal its heart.
Katie’s commitment to Ménière’s disease research began with her mother.
Her mother has experienced the hearing loss, tinnitus, dizziness and severe episodes that can accompany the condition. At times, those episodes affected her ability to work or drive home safely.
As Katie learned more about Ménière’s disease, she began looking for an organization that could help her raise money specifically for research into the condition. She connected with the American Hearing Research Foundation and established a fundraising relationship that directs support toward Ménière’s disease research.
That partnership gave Katie and her family a way to turn a personal experience into action.
Through research grants and other scientific initiatives, AHRF works to expand understanding of Ménière’s disease and encourage more researchers to investigate its causes, diagnosis and potential treatments.
“The American Hearing Research Foundation has been a great partner,” Katie said. “The impact of what we have raised goes way beyond the amount itself, and that matters.”
By the time the last conversations ended and the final guests left, the eighth annual ‘run because’ Golf Outing had accomplished something remarkable.
Approximately 100 golfers and a much larger community of relatives, friends, donors, sponsors and volunteers had helped raise more than $15,000 for Ménière’s disease research.
It was the outing’s most successful year yet, but its story is about more than a record total.
It is about a father who offered to organize a golf outing for his daughter’s cause.
It is about a mother whose experience with Ménière’s disease inspired her family to act.
It is about relatives traveling across the country, friends returning year after year and new participants finding their place within the community.
It is about people who golf, donate, bid, volunteer and stay long after the event has ended simply because they care.
The American Hearing Research Foundation is deeply grateful to Katie, her family, Bobby and everyone who helped make this year’s outing possible.
Their generosity is helping create new opportunities for research and bringing hope to people and families affected by Ménière’s disease.

This landmark decision was made in direct response to an unprecedented number of high-quality applications received this year, and the AHRF now anticipates awarding over $850,000 in grants—nearly double the previous amount—with funds scheduled for distribution in January 2026.

This symposium is sponsored by the American Hearing Research Foundation and Hearing Health Foundation. Hosted by the Association for Research in Otolaryngology (ARO), it will be held on the Friday before – and at the same location as – the 48th Annual ARO MidWinter Meeting in Orlando.
The goal for the symposium is to boost research that eventually will ease the challenges of Meniere’s disease and lead to improved quality of life for hundreds of thousands of people worldwide. Talks and panel discussions will be research-focused, intended for investigators and clinicians. Many – but not all – individuals who have Meniere’s disease are able to bring their symptoms under control. As Lauren Hedrick describes her grandfather’s experience, we’re reminded why it’s so important for AHRF to support and promote Meniere’s disease research.

Like many disorders, the symptoms of Meniere’s disease – which may include vertigo, tinnitus, and hearing loss – can affect a person’s life to varying degrees. Lauren Hedrick’s grandfather, Samuel “Sammy” Weavil (“my papaw” as she says), lived to age 75, and he struggled with the symptoms of Meniere’s disease for about 55 of those years. In fall of 2023, Lauren and her friend Kenzi Reddick hosted the first “2Morrow Needs You” run with proceeds going to prevent suicide, which took her grandfather’s life. Lauren made sure a third – $6,500 – went to AHRF for Meniere’s disease research. Laura explains, “I wanted to do something in his name, because he was one of the most wonderful people I’ve ever known.”
Lauren’s grandfather’s vertigo episodes began at age 21 after he finished his stint in the U.S. army in Germany and returned home to North Carolina. Sammy’s hearing diminished permanently with each episode. He also developed a ringing in his ears. By the time Lauren knew him in his 40s, she recalls him “saying it was roaring inside his head.”
Sammy eventually was diagnosed with Meniere’s disease by the nationally known neurotologist, Michael E. Glasscock III. Lauren noted, “My papaw really respected him” and tried many treatment options under his care.

One of Dr. Glastock’s suggestions was to focus on a hobby. Lauren explains that her grandfather “took up video. He dove into having the best equipment and was interested in technology advancements.” Lauren describes how he enjoyed weekend visits with his grandchildren, and videotaped everything from their activities to simple breakfast conversations like the one with Lauren pictured above. He worked hard to keep physically fit, using his at-home gym “when the noises weren’t too bad. He had six-pack abs into his 50s.” And his religious faith became deeply important.
But losses began to take a toll. Sammy missed the music he loved as a teenager. He had to quit his job in the furniture manufacturing industry due to disability. He and his wife divorced, and he struggled to communicate with family members. Eventually he stopped seeing Dr. Glasstock when treatment options didn’t help.
In his 60s, Sammy had cochlear implant surgery. “I was there when they turned on the CI,” Lauren recounts. “He said he could hear me, but I sounded like a chipmunk.” The audiologist explained that his brain would need to be trained. “As much as she tried to help, and as much as he tried, when he knew he wouldn’t actually hear what our voices sounded like, he gave up. He’d turn the CI device on in his later years because it would cancel out the tinnitus. Sometimes he’d turn it on just to take a nap.”
Throughout her childhood, Lauren saw firsthand how her grandfather “loved our family more than anything” and how his life was impacted by his Meniere’s symptoms. Now she wants to make the 2Morrow Needs You 5K an annual event. She explains, “I hope anything I can say or do will play a part in research to find help for these people” who struggle with Meniere’s. This year’s race takes place September 28, 2024, in Archdale, North Carolina.

Anyone who has ever planted something from seed knows it takes time for the resulting plant to bear fruit. AHRF’s seed grants take time to bear fruit, too.
In 2018, AHRF awarded a grant to Anna Lysakowski, professor in the Department of Anatomy & Cell Biology at the University of Illinois at Chicago (UIC) and co-PI Jose Antonio Lopez-Escamez, MD, PhD, then at Granada University in Spain (now at the University of Sydney), for a study addressing familial Meniere’s disease (MD). Although reports vary, the percentage of Meniere’s disease that is familial – that is, where there is a family history of the disorder – is estimated to be between 5-15% of all Meniere’s cases.
With results in hand, they and their colleagues pursued a larger grant from the National Institutes of Health (NIH). Study results were published in the August 2023 issue of European Journal of Neuroscience.
Here, Dr. Lysakowski explains where the AHRF-funded study led.
1) Why did you focus on familial Meniere’s disease (MD)?
My Spanish colleague, Jose Antonio Lopez-Escamez, MD, PhD, is a world’s expert on familial MD. He has discovered 8-9 new genes that are mutated with single nucleotide variations (SNPs) in MD patients and not in their unaffected siblings. I’d previously published two papers with him where my lab localized three of these gene products (proteins) in the inner ear, with immunohistochemical methods. The two genes, FAM136a and DTNA, had been found to be mutated in three generations of the same family, so it was unclear if they were each responsible for a different aspect of the MD. Meniere’s is more of a syndrome, like Down’s Syndrome (meaning that there are multiple components to the disease, balance disorder, progressive hearing loss, tinnitus, nausea, aural fullness, sudden vertigo or falling attacks), so there was likely not just one cause or mechanism involved.
2) What was the aim of the study?
So we had localized the proteins in the inner ear (first step, because it wouldn’t make any sense if these proteins were in the stomach instead of the inner ear), but we didn’t know if they actually caused vestibular or hearing problems. Hence, we looked for mouse models in which two of these specific genes were knocked out and tested them for vestibular and hearing problems.
The way we tested the mice in this study was to place them on a slowly rotating rod and then slowly speed up the rotations until they fell off (a short distance to the bottom of the enclosure), in a behavioral test called the RotaRod test. We compared wild type (WT) mice, those who didn’t have the gene knocked out, with the knockout (KO) mice, to see how long it took them to fall, the so-called “Latency to fall”. We also tested their hearing, in a somewhat crude fashion, by using a clicker to elicit a so-called “acoustic startle reflex”, which is a little jump when they heard the click. If they didn’t jump, then they didn’t hear the noise, so they were deaf.
3) What results did you get, and what do they mean?
We tested the same mice monthly, both males and females, once a month for 24 months (the mouse equivalent of a human 70 years old) to attempt to distinguish the effects of vestibular and hearing loss in the KO mice compared to normal aging.
The results were that sex, age, and genotype were significantly correlated with shorter “Latencies to Fall” for male DTNA KO mice, while only age was a significant factor for FAM136a KO mice. FAM136a KO mice, on the other hand, lost their hearing months before WTs (9–11 months vs. 15–20 months).
So, we concluded that the vestibular loss may be due to the DTNA mutation and the hearing loss to the FAM136a mutation. DTNA is found at synapses, the connections between hair cells and their nerve endings, and FAM136a is a mitochondrial protein of unknown function (there are lots of mitochondria in both hair cells and their nerve endings). So the two genes were responsible for different aspects of the disease.
4) How can these results shed light on MD in general?
These results highlight the idea that MD has multifactorial causes. Familial MD, as far as we know now, is responsible for 5-15% of MD cases (about the same proportion of the population as Huntington’s Disease, with the higher numbers being found in Asian populations). And it is a disease that usually manifests in middle age, so it’s not as if children get it, but rather adults in the prime of their working life, thus the economic affects can be devastating. So in addition to the genetic aspects, there are also autoimmune causes, MD cases related to vestibular migraine, MD cases related to stroke, and MD cases caused by endolymphatic hydros (excess fluid accumulation in the tight inner ear spaces). Some cases can be treated by giving the patients diuretics, but finding genetic causes raises the hope of gene therapy as a cure.
5) What could follow from these results? What’s next to investigate?
As mentioned above, gene therapy is a possible treatment, once we know the possible genetic causes.
What I would like to investigate is other genetic and/or sporadic causes. There are sporadic cases that may have genetic origins, for example, the gene OTOG (otogelin), a known hearing loss gene, has been implicated in familial MD as well. We wanted to study OTOG KO mice in the same manner, to characterize the disorder in this genetic mutation.
But other avenues of investigation would be to get at the actual mechanisms involved, for example, the FAM136a gene codes for “a mitochondrial protein of unknown function.” Colleagues of ours in Switzerland who study mitochondrial biochemistry asked us for tissue samples from the FAM136a mice and they are now studying these tissues to determine what the function of this protein might be.
Mouse studies with other genes could also shed light on other aspects of the disease, like the tinnitus, the vertigo, or the fluid imbalances leading to endolymphatic hydro’s.
6) How did this collaboration develop?
My collaboration with Dr. Lopez-Escamez developed from a chance encounter we had at the European Brain Prize Meeting in 2012, honoring two famous inner ear female colleagues, one French and the other Israeli, for their outstanding contributions to genetic hearing loss.
I gave a presentation on a hair cell structure called the striated organelle. Dr. Lopez-Escamez approached me afterwards, suggesting a potential identity for a protein component of the striated organelle, that he thought was also involved in MD. It turned out not to be involved in MD, but it was a component of the striated organelle, so he asked us if we wanted to collaborate on localizing some of the gene products he had identified as possible fMD genes in the inner ear. We did localize three of them (FAM136a, DTNA and PRKCB) and published two papers with the Lopez-Escamez laboratory (2015 and 2016).
After the American Hearing Research Foundation came through with funds to purchase the FAM136a and DTNA KO mice and we published last year’s paper with behavioral and biochemical characterizations of those two genes that we had worked on characterizing during the pandemic, we thought that we might be able to get NIH funding for the collaborative work. Most recently, we tried to get NIH funding to create SNP KO mice with more specific mutations, rather than just the global KO mice that we used in our 2023 publication, but so far that has not worked out.
Dr. Lopez-Escamez has since moved from Spain to Australia to become Director of the Center for Meniere’s Disease Research at the University of Sydney. We see each other at international meetings (most recently in Shanghai in April) and continue to consult with each other as much as possible, most recently on the Swiss collaboration. I think that he may have access to more funding and colleagues now in Australia, but we’ll see what the future holds.

“Most of what we know about the human brain comes from technologies like F MRI where people are lying in this machine and their brains are being imaged. We don’t know very much at all about how the brain is activated in natural settings – when people are walking around, looking at a scene, moving their heads to orient.”
Imagine a crowded party. Over the music, you hear people talking, laughter, glasses and plates clinking… maybe a dog barks as the doorbell rings. Kamal Sen, PhD, explains that in this setting our brains usually can “focus on a single conversation despite numerous distractions.” He is using a 2023 AHRF Discovery Grant to investigate auditory scene analysis in humans (also called “the cocktail party problem”), where our brains have the ability to selectively attend to specific objects in a complex scene involving multiple sounds. He wants to explore why those with hearing impairment “find such complex scenes confusing, overwhelming, and debilitating even when wearing hearing assistive devices.”
From a background in physics, Sen followed mentors into neuroscience and then auditory neuroscience. He notes, “When I started in the field, the auditory system had been studied with sounds that are quite artificial – like white noise and pure tones.” Sen’s interest in auditory scene analysis grew out of studying how songbirds process sounds in their natural environment. He adds, “We know there is a lot of richness to sounds like animal vocalizations and [human] speech. There’s a difference in the physics of the sounds themselves. And they are behaviorally more relevant; this means we are more engaged when those sounds are presented. Both of these aspects really shape the brain response. Equally surprising was that the complexity of sounds themselves shapes the filtering in the brain.”
Sen uses computational modeling to understand how the auditory cortex contributes to the recognition of complex sounds. His work “morphed” into the cocktail party problem because “we’re always communicating in the presence of background sounds – whether it’s at a café or market or a train station. The question is how that impacts communication and representation.”

Sen’s AHRF-funded project uses innovative wearable technology for measuring brain signals developed in the laboratory of David Boas, PhD, at Boston University. These wearable caps measure both EEG signals as well as fNIRS – a measure of “blood flow and blood signals” – in the brain. Sen describes complementary strengths of these measures: “The EEG provides very precise temporal signals [electrical activity over time]. The fNIRS measure has good spatial resolution. So you can really tell the activity is coming from a certain part of the brain.”
Sen adds, “When I met David and talked to him about the cocktail problem, we knew we had found a good match between technology and a problem where you’re naturally engaging with people as you’re conversing, moving your head, looking at a conversation partner.” He adds, “When we start looking at these signals for the first time in humans, we should be able to see specific types of signatures, like which areas [of the brain] are activated, how they follow a target sound of interest, and how are other sounds suppressed. I think it will remarkably advance our understanding of how the brain is activated in these situations.”
In addition to David Boas, Sen’s co-investigators are Virginia Best, PhD, who specializes in psychophysics, and Laura Lewis, PhD, who is providing specialized analysis of the EEG data.
Sen sees many ways this work can be expanded. For instance, it might lead to improvements in the way hearing aids segregate sound, enabling attention-steered hearing aids. It also could have broader implications, for instance with autism or attention deficit issues, where individuals have trouble suppressing unwanted sound stimuli.
