Typh is clearly annoyed at Faden because of the interference with the scientific method in an experiment supposed to have carefully controlled variables.

Especially interference with the p-values (belated warning that a statistics joke is incoming) to the point where the confidence in the confidence interval is all but zero (and there’s another one).

Well, this ends this current run of non-main story pages. We hope you enjoyed them. On what we hope was an upside, had there been a regular Monday page between the last one on the 16th of December 2019 and last Monday on the 6th of January 2020, there would have been three pages over this interval. Instead, including this one, there’s been 18 over this time period. We hope most people liked most of them at least.

So, with any luck that’s been a net positive. Now, one way or another, we’ve been able to provide some kind of new page at least every week just about without fail since Exiern started going on 15 years ago (possibly bar some strange historical goings-on back in the first year or two if the dates on the archive page are anything to go by).

However, the aim is to get back to a new story page every week and ultimately even more than that to get the story moving along. These are the two main goals to aim to reach at least the former no later than the end of the year, first weekly at the very least and then more than that beyond 2020 and furthermore sustain that pace.

In the meantime with this high volume high output hiatus that has now just passed, we did talk about a few of the challenges such as the costs and raising revenue and of course there’s availability of the artists and how fast they can work – as of late there has been some scrambling such as the last few weeks and we’re not completely out of the woods there just yet. With any luck we’re close and getting closer all the time.

We’re always mindful that even if the main webcomic is free, people are still spending their time reading it and that’s a cost in itself; also that it being free is not an excuse to in any way aim for lower standards in the writing or artwork. We appreciate all the feedback, so please keep it coming – be it advice on anything that might help us with the finances to thoughts on the storyline – from any individual pages to larger story arcs.

Well, on that note this marks the end of the changeover period of our main artists and regular pages are back weekly for now from tomorrow (Monday, the 13th of January 2020).

We hope to see you again tomorrow!

We kept the Rxiern life advice as short and simple as possible because even though there’s literally thousands upon thousands of money saving ideas, it’s not terribly practical to keep track of them all right out of the gate.

So even though these bonus pages were originally inspired by mattresses, it’s not really about mattresses. In this case mattresses are being used to illustrate the multitude of ways we’re actually being separated from our money in greater quantities than we really should be but quite possibly never even knew to think about.

Plus, it was a chance to do another gag featuring the gang, of course.

So without any further ado, here’s an article about price fixing and mattress cartels in Australia and the take home lesson here is to in general think about all the areas we can save money. Cutting excess unnecessary spending is potentially a greater opportunity to raise money than trying to boost income.

I admit it can seem quite deflating that our corporate overlords are trying to find increasing numbers of way to separate us from as much of our cash as possible (take the global dominance of one company who seems to have the world’s supply of sunglasses all but locked up as one example) as per one of many examples in this article.

However, I guess our objective here is to make us think about every facet of our spending and seeing how we can improve and save on it. The amounts might surprise us!

… and then we hope even an extra dollar or so can be kicked our way to help us make Exiern.

At the very least, we hope to have a discussion about the future of Exiern and what your ideas are about everything from the direction to the funding going forwards.

And in the meantime, if you’re in Australia and you want a cheaper mattress from someone who’s come along to disrupt the industry with some cartel busting and 120 days free trial (at the time of writing) to boot, well you could at least consider giving these guys a look at koala.com.

We have in no way been asked for an endorsement, just happened to stumble across their ads like I stumbled across the entirety of the secret world of Australian mattresses …

Anyway, we hoped you enjoyed this tongue in cheek approach to trying to start a discussion about the future of Exiern and also a not-in-any-way stalling to buy time for the artist changeover which couldn’t happen straight away because of other projects you’ll be seeing soon already in progress.

We were hoping the sheer volume of content at least kept you distracted if nothing else. We also promise we were at least trying to make it good or at least adequate, too!

Regular story pages start again on Monday, the 13th of January 2020 but before then, there’s one more bonus page for Sunday to go (there might just have been a hint of that in the title for this one).

We hope to see you then, then!

Our artist on this page did remark “Interestingly, each of these options, as well as saving money, are small but effective changes that are beneficial for the environment.”

Well, that wraps our advice for now. Of course there’s a multitude of potential money saving ideas that fall under the overall theme of looking at cutting expenditure in effect raising your potential savings but it’s much more practical to have a short simple list to start with. It’s easier to both remember and execute.

So, to recap the suggestions from this week:

To recap the recap, we tried to come up with some ideas that weren’t too many and weren’t too complex that would cause as little disruption as possible in execution so that people could save some money. At which point, maybe there’d be even a little more disposable income to perhaps send a fraction of in our direction to help us make this webcomic.
Finally, to go even deeper than that, this week more than anything was an opportunity to discuss with everyone about any ideas anyone might have about the future of this webcomic, how to raise the revenue to help pay for it and any thoughts on the future directions it could be heading. All feedback welcome!
See you tomorrow for a special bonus feature starting this weekend!

The first new story page of the year is going to be on Monday, the 13th of January 2020. Or if you can’t wait that long, it’s already up on Patreon right now!

OK, for something a little bit different as we talk about generating income even if just a little as opposed to saving money already earned. Depending on where you are, there might be the opportunity to make money through recycling. Of course, that option’s been around for a long time but as of late, the process has gotten readily more practical in some locations at least through automation.

We have the option of Tomra in Australia and it’s quite cool how if you have any items that qualify (bottles, cans and other things that meet criteria), I’m sure it varies by country but we here can make $0.10 and item.

It’s really cool, actually. You can log into the machine that looks not unlike the ones Typh and Peonie are using with an app on your phone and one option is that it immediately deposits the money into your Paypal account after collecting your recyclables. How’s that for progress?

Practicalities include how close is your nearest collection point (we also have the option of non-automated storefronts not connected with Tomra who pay you for bringing recyclables in) and being able to actually hauling in your collection (something I’m grappling with at the moment as I haven’t been able to make trips to a collection point and the items are piling up for the time being).

Also, I’d highly advise putting things for recycling in a solid bag or other container just in case what you’ve collected … isn’t quite empty. Speaking from experience here.

Anyway, in the practical sense, no-ones saying going out of your way to pick up recyclables and especially not suggesting trawling through trash cans or anything like that but if a recycling centre (be it a machine or be it a non-automated storefront) or other option you can get to easily and it’s recyclable material you’re generating at home you can store and then transport easily anyway … well, maybe it’s worth a shot.

Maybe now if we’ve planted that idea in your head and you can generate even $3 a month you didn’t have before without having to inconvenience yourself and say as a couple of possibilities for you to consider, send $1 of that our way via say a Patreon subscription or the occasional use of our Ko-Fi button, it all helps.

I mean it can add up and quickly at that, this entire page was paid for by the revenue raised from depositing recycled items … hence the title “The Art of Recycling”.

(Boom.)

Just as some background information and a point to ponder, that was just from the money I raised from what I was able to collect on my own, who knows what we could do collectively as a group all over the globe?

See you back here tomorrow for our gripping conclusion to this feature about helping us to raise revenue we can use to help make Exiern!

In the meantime, please feel free to make any comments and suggestions about what you think we could do to raise revenue because as we’ve said many times already, that’s what this feature is really all about!

There will be new images every day from now until the next story page on the 13th of January 2020. So, check in each day and be guaranteed to see something new! (We make no promises on the quality though we are at least trying to do our best.)

As a logical progression from resharpening your razors, the obvious next step would be looking at potentially cheaper alternatives to brand name shaving cream.

We’re going to throw this one out to the audience as there’s different views about what you should put on your face or legs depending on where you look.

For example, yes you can use soap versus no you cannot use soap.

You can apparently also use peanut butter or honey but I’d rather eat the peanut butter or honey. Plus, you end up smelling like peanut butter or honey, so I’m going to look at the other items on the list first.

Anyway, I’m sure there’s cheaper alternatives than the brand name specifically marketed items but since in practice the effects can vary on your skin and maybe not in a good way, has anyone in our audience out there got any ideas on what might work best or from experience has worked best for them?

If you want to read a more detailed explanation about what we’re really up to, you can read it in the text here and here.

Our series on asking our audience their ideas on how we can raise more money to help make Exiern under the guise of money saving ideas for them continues here tomorrow!
