]]>“The worst, riskiest and most costly defence decision ever made by an Australian government”, that’s the conclusion from a community-led, crowdfunded public inquiry into the $368bn AUKUS nuclear submarine agreement.
Lead Commissioner and Midnight Oil’s Peter Garrett spearheaded the intensive 10-day inquiry, which received 1000 submissions and heard from a former prime minister, experts, advocates and citizens from cities across Australia since its June kick off.
The report, titled Surrendering Australia: the Aukus Deception, points to several priority areas of concern including environment, waste management, foreign policy, national security risk and cost. It urges the termination of Australia’s involvement also calling for a Royal Commission into the agreement signed by the former Morrison government in 2021.
According to media reports, Federal ministers have ‘brushed off’ the public inquiry.

]]>Australian creators are facing complex issues as generative AI companies use their creative works, such as art, music and writing, without expressed, written consent or providing fair compensation to the original owners.
To combat these concerns, researchers from the University of New South Wales have given the federal government a proposal, Copyright Plus.
This policy suggests that companies should have to disclose their data sources, honour the rights of creators to opt-out of their work being used for the purposes of AI and a fair payment scheme for those who have had their work used previously without permission.

]]>UN special Rapporteur Dr Albert K Barume, expert on Indigenous peoples has arrived in Australia to examine human rights issues affecting First peoples.
He will meet with government officials, the Australian Human Rights Commission, Indigenous Peoples’ organisations and communities, civil society, and academics.
But, it’s been reported that Dr Barume has already been denied access at two youth prisons in Queensland and Northern Territory and had multiple meetings with government officials cancelled. Advocacy groups say they aren’t surprised at the lack of access, as the conditions inside are allegedly not to human rights standards.
CEO of Sisters Inside and Founder of Incarcerated and Formerly Incarcerated Women and Girls Debbie Kilroy hoped Dr Barume would have been given access to properly assess how indigenous people are treated in our prisons.

]]>The election results several hours into counting already indicate the extent to which the American public have soured on Donald Trump with the Republican Party losing both Congress and the Senate,
As we head towards 4pm, it is apparent that the Democrats are headed for a comfortable majority in Congress, with the gavel moving from the hands of Mike Johnsen to Hakeem Jeffries, who will be the first African American to become the speaker of the house. While in the Senate, despite a hefty advertising war-chest and an array of deceptive AI advertisements, the Democrats have succeeded in picking up at least seven Senate seats to obtain the majority.
