I use NiSi and Benro Filters. My Filter Holder is the NiSi V7 Holder, because of the design of the polarizer and how easy it is to attach and remove.

If properly applied the polarizing filter can be one of your most used and valuable filters. As many people know the polarizing filter will darken blue skies and bring out clouds. Notice on these examples (non-polarized is on the left, polarized is on the right) that the polarized example not only has a darker sky but the colors are richer and better defined, particularly in the grass and red roof.

In this example the glare on the surface of the water has been removed resulting in better definition of the tide pool.

Here we see an example of glare on the leaves (caused by moisture or oils on the foliage) even though it was a cloudy day the polarizer removes the washed out appearance of the leaves resulting in a rich green image.

In the last example is a demonstration of what to look for that might go wrong when using a polarizing filter. This may happen on clear blue sky days (it can also happen on cloudy days but is harder to notice). If you are using a wider angle lens and aiming the camera about 90 degrees from the sun you can get this effect of a dark band in the middle of the sky. Be careful to watch for all the effects that the polarizing filter applies when using it.
This ‘wonky’ effect can happen in many different circumstances and requires careful evaluation of the image whenever you apply a polarizing filter. My note on the very bottom is to remind me to explain that Variable Neutral Density filters are a combination of two polarizing filters which cancel out light and hence act like a Neutral Density filter. The problem is that using one polarizing filter may result in ‘wonky’ effects–using two at the same time has just doubled your chances! My recommendation is to use a filter system and the square type of ND filters.

While this article is a comparison, it is not a “versus” comparison. Both lenses are finely designed and built pieces of equipment. Both Tomy and I can say with complete confidence after using these lenses extensively for over a month and photographing birds under a wide variety of conditions and situations, that both lenses performed exceedingly well.
This review is also not a technical test of either of these lenses, there are other sites that are far more technically oriented which can give you those results. What this review does is reflect upon the performance of the lenses after extensive use in the field for over a month.
On paper the 150-400mm has some clear advantages:
The 300mm has a couple of big advantages of its own:
But looking at specifications of a lens on paper can only do so much for you—it’s like trying to compare a stereo system by specs, it can’t be done. You have to work with a lens to understand it and gain an intimate understanding of how the lens really works. In fact I would submit that it takes at least a few thousand images over the course of several weeks or even months to really understand a lens.

What John says about the 300mm f4
I’ve owned this lens for over a year. I recently bought the OM-1 body and now I feel like I’m getting the full potential of the lens. Shooting with this lens every day for a month in Colombia and Yucatán, Mexico has given me a lot of field time under a wide variety of conditions and situations.

What Tomy says about the 150-400 f4.5
I have owned this lens since my Santa Claus account bought it for me just before Christmas. I also own the 300 F4.0. I wanted more reach without fumbling with TCs in the field. I bought the big white for my winter birding trips to Colombia and Mexico. I have been a professional photographer for 40 years and I have enjoyed some of the best lenses that Nikon and Canon and Olympus have made. This is my first super-telephoto, but I have owned the Nikon 300 F 2.8 and the Canon 100-400 vii. Both are part of superb systems. All long lenses require the best we can bring to this art form to bring out the best pictures. Why? Well, birding involves photography under often really tough conditions. Call me a dilettante, but I want to walk through a landscape and see a bird and swing my lens towards it and take a picture. I’ve walked with tripods and gimbals, I’ve sat in blinds. I love a good tripod/monopod with a camera on it…. but, you can’t swing either of them quickly enough to follow a bird through a tangle of branches or across the sky or through grasses to catch them well enough. And when the birds, as they often are, are 40 feet up in a tree, I can’t maneuver a tripod mounted camera at all. In great birding locations there are so many fast occurring opportunities that I treasure the swing and shoot response. Hence, my election of a camera and lens that is light, stabilized, and sharp. OM Systems fits the qualifications.
John 300mm:
What impresses me most about this lens is how the auto-focus, focus-tracking, and image stabilization work together to snap the bird into focus and track the eye focus. Many times while using this lens and seeing the birds I would react by swinging the camera round and seemingly before my eye and mind could fully comprehend what was in the frame I was pressing the back-focus button and shutter button almost simultaneously resulting in a sharp capture of the bird. On a few occasions the camera had a difficult time finding the subject for focus. Sometimes these occasions were due to interference of branches or foreground elements, and sometimes due to low or very flat lighting. These situations were rare and generally understandable given the conditions. The 300mm is equipped with a feature that allows you to easily disengage the auto-focus by simply pulling back on the focus ring. Once disengaged it is very easy to spin the focus ring and obtain a good focus. Many times once the bird is focused I could re-engage the auto-focus and the camera/lens system would then lock in the auto-tracking focus and follow the bird.
Tomy 150-400mm
The many auto-focus and tracking features of the OM1 body give you an almost limitless number of options. There are more on the 150-400 than on the 300. I shoot with aperture priority and auto ISO a lot. I often shoot with the single point bird tracking. The 150-400 has a much better manual focus override than the 300. It’s a one finger operation with my left hand on the lens barrel and is light and fast. The clutch mechanism of the 300 naturally pulls your lens down and out of focus when you engage it. You have to refind the bird and then focus. With the 150-400 this simply does not happen. Is this frequent? No, but I am not frequently looking for birds in tangles, but when it is a lifer, and I have flown 6000 miles to see it – well, I don’t want to lose it with a clutch. Plus, it has the internal 1.2x TC. Conveniently located next to the right index finger one can engage it in a moment.
John 300mm
The lens is very small and lightweight. This translates into a very pleasurable experience using it in the field. I could carry this lens all day and not get fatigued. I believe this makes a difference in the quality of the images you are able to get. Sore muscles are distracting and limit your creative energy. The lens is very well balanced with the camera body and I have no trouble holding it steady, even for fairly long periods of time. The image stabilization at 5 stops is 3 stops shy of the stabilization of the 150-400 but it always seemed to perform just fine and I never felt like it let me down, in fact most times it was pleasantly surprising how slow I could go with the shutter speed and still obtain a perfectly sharp image.

The 8 stops of the image stabilization this lens and body provide is unchallenged in the photography world. I have made hand-held, 1/20th of a second exposures that are perfectly sharp. In the burst more than 70% of them were in focus and some of the others were a blur because the bird moved. I have also enjoyed the 1/25,000 infrequently. The weight is more than the 300, ’tis true. Frankly, I can’t hold either of them in place for three minutes waiting for a bird to jump from a perch. “Hey! Get a tripod, Tomy!” LOL!

If there is one short-coming of this lens it is because it is a fixed focal length lens. The only way to change your composition is by getting closer or further away from your subject, or by using teleconverters. Most of the time in bird photography, however, you are cropping your images in post process so I’d say reach is more of an issue than zoomability. There were a couple of occasions where I brought both my 1.4 TX and 2 TX converters and found myself juggling them to switch what was on the camera, or removing one to use just the lens and no TX. Most of the time I used the lens with the 1.4 TX converter attached. I found no difference in performance of the lens, either in the field performance of speed of focus, tracking, and IS, or during the post processing of the image files with a TX used. I found no degradation of quality performance in image sharpness while using the 1.4 TX. The image files that used the 2 TX may have resulted in an ever so slight degradation of sharpness, but I would say it was not a major concern.
Whether you use the lens with no TX (600mm reach equivalent) or with the 1.4 TX (840mm reach equivalent) or the 2 TX (1200mm reach equivalent) that is a pretty narrow view of the world. Finding a tiny little bird in a mass of branches or following the erratic flight of a very swift flying bird can and is a real challenge. One advantage of a zoom lens to get a wider view of the scene and then once locating the bird, zooming in to compose the final shot. This technique can be a real help, however, after using this fixed focal length lens for over a year I’ve become quite adapt at locating and tracking birds through the narrow view. Developing this talent took me quite a lot of practice. Birds in flight can still create a challenge for me. There is a device that Olympus makes called a Dot-finder which is designed to help you locate and track subjects with a long telephoto lens. I own this device but somehow never seem to remember to use it.
In short, I would rank the in-field handling of this lens very high.
Tomy 150-400
I never wish I had a wider field of view. I have one! I use it all the time. I never wish I had more reach. I have more reach. I use it all the time. Pixels on birds are important. Let me swing into that for a moment. As a pro I have owned a lot of digital cameras since 1998? when they first came out. We all used to sell 16×20’s to our clients when the cameras had 6 mbs and they were delighted. I sometimes crop to a third of the frame for social posts. Heyy! I am back to 6mbs! But my reach is 40% more than the 300/600 of the 300 F4 so I am happy! Without the internal TC I am shooting an 800 equivalent f 4.5. The bokeh is outstanding. At 25 yards the DOF is .2 meters. At the close focusing range of 4′ I am shooting at my feet or cropping a flower with a butterfly on it. I have a dot finder. At 600 mm it never finds the bird. Yes, I know how to adjust it. It doesn’t adjust far enough. I have used this lens with the 1.4 TC. OMG! 1400mm with the same sharpness, speed of focus and stability
John 300mm
The image files from this lens are exceedingly sharp. It renders a great fidelity of tonal quality and handles low light very well. In fact, the brightness of the viewfinder in low light in the field is very good. There is very little apparent chromatic aberration and no apparent vignette issues either with blur or light fall-off. The bokeh or background blur on this lens is superb! Personally for quality of image I don’t think you can beat a prime lens. I also think I can squeeze a little bigger crop out of the image quality on a fixed focal lens over a zoom because of the superior image quality.
Tomy 150-400
Perfect color, perfect sharpness. Both the 300 and the 150-400 have some vignette when shooting against a solid sky. Easy to correct with the profiles and gone by F 5.6
John 300mm
I purchased my Olympus 300 f4 from Alan at Hunt Photo & Video used for about $1800. It was in mint condition. For a professional level bird photography lens that is very in-expensive! Even the brand-new price of $2800 is very reasonable for a lens of this quality and reach.
Tomy 150-400mm
I explored all the options from new to used in the big lens space. $7500 is more than the value of my 2007 Lexus RX 350! It is a lot less than the new 600 F 4 lenses from Canon and Nikon. I supposed I could have bought something else. But there was always a problem. Too heavy, needs a tripod, too big for international travel – needs its own seat, too costly, too old, too slow, too short. I love my 300 f4 but it stayed home this trip. I wasn’t using it at home once I had the new toy. Will I ever again? Hmmm. I think I will give it to my girlfriend if I can convince her to give up the binoculars. Good glass holds its value. I could sell this lens for a significant percentage of its retail cost.

This lens has performed very well for me over the last month. Even photographing side by side with Tomy who has the 150-400 I never felt wanting or disappointed with what I was able to capture versus what I saw Tomy capturing. (Yeah there might be just a little competitiveness here!) I believe that the 300 f4 might be just a tad quicker with the focus and focus tracking than the 150-400, but Tomy may not agree with me! I would say if you are looking for an upgrade from the Olympus 100-400 or you are in the market for a really good birding set-up that won’t break the bank buy the OM-1 with the 300mm f4. You won’t regret it. I will add one caveat with this recommendation, this is a fixed focal length lens, if you are unaccustomed to using a fixed focal length lens you should know that if takes some practice to get good at handling one.
Tomy 150-400mm
This lens is the bomb. I know John has missed shots I have got because he has told me he has. I have missed shots he has found. I have been able to get closer. We agree the half stop of aperture has not mattered in ISO. I will use the 4.5 in dark conditions and eschew the TC 5.6. I love that! It is as fast as the 300 to focus. It is heavy at the end of the day. During the day that weight contributes a bit to stability. I can’t move it as fast. It has a certain inertia. Perhaps part of that is the IBIS and ILIS. It seems to hold ME still! I bought the 150-400 because of the incredible reviews online. It has never disappointed me.

As I’ve been photographing quite a few birds lately I thought I’d review how I program or set up my camera to maximize my success for bird photography.
Birds are without a doubt one of the more challenging subjects for camera technique. Having the proper settings can make all the difference between joy and utter frustration on a bird photography outing. Every camera make and model can be a little different so you need to cross check my suggestions with what might be proper for your particular camera brand. In some cases the settings are more or less universal in others knowing the best setting for your specific camera make and model can make a difference.
These days I am shooting my Olympus OM-1 (Mark 1) camera for bird photography. I use a Olympus 300mm f4 lens, most of the time I have the 1.4X teleconverter attached. Occasionally I will use the 2X teleconverter or remove the teleconverters, but for probably 80% of my images it is the 300mm with the 1.4X attached. The result is a 420mm f5.6, or in full frame camera terms I have the reach of a 840mm f 5.6. This focal length means I have the reach to capture small birds at a considerable distance. The first rule of bird photography is: “You need the longest lens possible.” The second rule of bird photography is: “It’s not long enough…” Even with the 840mm reach I find that most of the time I am cropping my image file to get the proper composition. Post processing tools these days have greatly assisted in these needs but more on that later.

Generally speaking prime lenses have some advantages over zoom lenses. They have some disadvantages too. First the advantages of a prime: they tend to be sharper, they tend to be faster focusing, they tend to be brighter in the viewfinder. All of these things are important for bird photography. Put a teleconverter on a prime lens and you may not notice any degradation of performance or image quality. Put the same teleconverter on a zoom lens and that may or may not be the case. The disadvantage of a prime lens vrs a zoom is that you cannot pull back to reveal a wider view. While this is handy see the first two rules of bird photography above—it is rarely needed.
I am giving you this information not to make you nervous about your set up but for you to understand how I work and why I work the way that I do. Also on the assumption that you like me are always looking to spend some more money on new toys…
Here are the basics of how I set my camera to go out photographing for birds.
ISO—set to auto. You may want to set a limit on how high your ISO can go in the auto setting mode. This is typically done in camera function menu settings. I don’t worry too much about high ISO settings—certainly not as much as I did even a few years ago. Camera manufacturers have made great strides in image quality relative to ISO, combined with the tools available in post processing for denoise (either in Adobe Camera Raw or a secondary plug-in program like Topaz) and noise issues are pretty much a thing of the past.

Image stabilization—turned on. If you have a mirrorless camera you have In-body camera stabilization in addition to lens stabilization make sure both are turned on. The benefits of In-body stabilization are one of the great technological advantages of the mirrorless generation of cameras. Typically in conjunction with image stabilized lenses these combinations can give you anywhere from 5 to 8 stops of stabilization. This means with a telephoto lens you can walk around handholding and shooting at shutter speeds of 1/100th of a second (in some cases even slower!) and still get very sharp results. The limit is usually determined by the movement of the bird and not the shake due to hand-holding a long telephoto lens. More on shutter speed below.
I use shutter priority for the exposure mode. This means that the aperture will most likely be at the widest possible setting and that is ok because in most cases you want the background to be as soft as possible. This allows the likeness of the bird to pop in the image and not blend into the sticks, twigs, leaves, or branches in the image. In most cases I maintain a selected shutter speed of at least 1/2500th of a second. I vary this on occasion. If I am photographing hummingbirds I might want to increase the shutter speed to 1/3200th or even 1/4000th of a second in order to better freeze the wings. On occasion I will lower the shutter speed too, for instance if I am photographing perched birds or larger birds with slower wing beats then I can drop the shutter speed to 1/2000th or 1/1600th of a second, but remember the typical reason that an image is rejected is because of movement blur. (Yes you can run the image through a post-process program like Topaz to remove some of this blur but typically I don’t like doing that because the result has a ‘processed’ look to it.) So I grudgingly lower the shutter speed only when the camera is flashing the ISO or aperture at me to indicate that the image is being under-exposed. As I lower the shutter speed I am careful to make sure I’m holding the camera steady and trying to photograph only those situations where I won’t get image blur from subject movement (unless of course I’m using that movement for artistic expression.)

Yes! Most of the time you want the auto focus on. There are some exceptions noted below. These days most mirrorless cameras have some pretty amazing features built into the auto focus features of the camera. In fact there are so many settings that can and should be set you will want to check the settings used by a noted bird photographer who uses your specific make and model of camera. For me to try to go through all the setting variations here, even just for the Olympus OM-1, it would merit an entire article.
One of the universals about the auto focus settings is to program your camera to use the back-button focus. When I first tried this feature it seemed clumsy and hard to use. Once I mastered it (which did not take much) I cannot imagine going back to not having it.
There are occasions when the camera is fooled or unable to focus. When a bird is perched in a thicket or the back side of a tree or bush. In this case there are so many branches or leaves in the way that the camera cannot isolate the bird. One of the features that I love on the Olympus 300mm lens is the slip clutch. This feature is built into the lens, with a simple pull motion disengage the auto-focus of the camera and twist the manual focus ring to give a precise focus on the bird. Some lens and camera set-ups allow for a “manual assist” setting in the menu to achieve the same result. Check your menu.

The drive settings allow you to determine how many frames per second you want the camera to take. Typically I like to have this set on a high-speed setting. Mirrorless cameras allow you to set this to some very high settings—Olympus for instance allows up to 120 frames per second! Typically I use 20 frames per second. There is another setting which comes in handy for bird photography. It is called either Pro-capture or Pre-shot depending upon your camera brand. Not all mirrorless cameras have this feature and with some cameras it only works in jpeg mode. Check your camera manual. The Pro-capture or Pre-shot settings allow you to buffer images of a subject and then complete the capture of these images if you depress the shutter button all the way. This feature comes in very handy for capturing birds as they take flight or land on a perch. The drawback is that you can record up to 90 or 120 images with the simple depress of the shutter button!
If you master these settings you’ll greatly improve your success in bird photography. Good luck and good shooting!

]]>During the eclipse I had two cameras photographing. One with a long lens to create the close ups of the eclipsed sun and one with a wide angle photographing the scene during the eclipse. One of the functions of the wide angle shots was to document the path of the sun across the scene.
When the eclipse was at totality I removed the eclipse filter on the wide angle lens and made a few photos of the overall scene. Here is one of those images

Importing the image into Photoshop I removed the sun and evened out the tonality of the sky

I then selected 10 images of the close-up of the sun depicting regular intervals of the eclipse. The image below shows one of the close ups.

I cropped all of these images equally. With some experimentation I determined the pixel size of the overall image so when I pasted them into the wide angle background they looked “believable”. The resulting size of these sun images is somewhat arbitrary. It is larger than the actual sun size in the original image but not so large that the overall composite looks fake. I then used a selection tool to grab only the sun portion of each close up of the sun. I copied this content and pasted it as a layer into the background of the overall wide angle view. I carefully aligned these layers to replicate the path of the eclipse.

Once I had everything in place I flattened the image to remove the layers and saved it in the final format.

On the wide angle image we were fortunate to have arranged a back-country tour of Monument Valley. What this meant was we had an awesome setting to view and photograph the eclipse. It also meant that other than another group of photographers which were set up some 200 yards away we were all by ourselves, and that made the event even more special and intimate.
The wide angle shot establishes the context of the eclipse and provides a backdrop to place the close up images. I took some photographs of the scene at the very beginning with out a solar filter on. I then placed the solar filter and set the camera for an overall exposure pretty close the equivalent of the close up camera. What this meant was that the resulting images with the solar filter in place only recorded the sun as a dot in a field of black. That is fine as really all these images do is to record the path of the sun and the eclipse through the sky. During the total portion of the eclipse I removed the solar filter and made a couple of exposures of the scene with the sun in total eclipse phase. As this was an annular eclipse there was still a fair amount of light on the scene. I bracketed these exposures. Afterwards I replaced the solar filter and let the camera’s intervalometer finish the sequence of picture taking.
During most of the eclipse we were standing around with little to do other than adjust framing occasionally and tell stories. It was a very pleasant experience and we got to listen to stories from our guides who had grown up in Monument Valley. When the eclipse was over we collected our gear and I knew that the work of creating photographs of the eclipse was only partly done.

]]>This last week on October 14, 2023 there was a total Annular eclipse of the sun. It originated in Oregon and passed through the SW of the US, into Mexico and South America.

I lead a workshop in Monument Valley where we were fortunate enough to view and photograph the total eclipse. I used two camera set ups for this photography. I used my Fujifilm X-T5 Aps-c sensor camera with a 100-400 and 1.4 teleconverter which resulted in about an 840mm equivalent on a full frame camera.
The second camera set up I used was my Fujifilm GFX medium format camera with a 20-35 @ about 25mm or about the equivalent to a 21mm on a full frame camera.
On both camera set-ups I used a Haida 20 stop solar filter. This protected my eye and the camera sensor from harmful solar rays during the eclipse.
As part of the workshop prior to the actual eclipse event, we went out a couple of days prior at about the same time of the day as the eclipse. Everyone set up their cameras just as if we were photographing the eclipse and practiced photographing the sun. This proved an invaluable exercise. When the day of the eclipse came, everyone was familiar with what they needed to do and how to do it.

The long lens set up was mounted to a tripod with a standard ball head. I placed the solar filter on the lens and composed the sun in the frame. I used manual focus to focus on the edge of the sun. I selected an exposure of f8 @ 1/250th second, ISO 400. This exposure setting was about 2-3 stops below what the camera indicated was a proper exposure. This is because the camera is reading an average of the sky around the sun as well as the sun surface. For a proper exposure you want to only give a proper exposure of the surface of the sun. I could have used the spot metering function to give me the proper reading, but I used the average and adjusted from there. Same result in the end. Once you set your exposure settings you’ll want to leave them at that for the entire duration of the eclipse, with the exception of during the 4 minutes or so of the total portion of the eclipse when there is the “ring of fire”. You will want to try some brackets around your exposure settings as during a total eclipse you’ll not see any of the surface of the sun but only the aura around the sun and that will have a slightly different exposure.
I then set the camera’s intervalometer to take a photograph every 30 seconds for 2 ½ hours. This was more than the approximately 2 hour duration of the eclipse. If your camera doesn’t have a built in intervalometer or sequence shutter settings, you’ll want to purchase an external intervalometer which connects via the cable release port. This makes the process for capturing the eclipse much easier. I also think in hindsight that every 30 seconds was over-kill. A setting of every 2 minutes would be fine. I would turn the intervalometer off during the 4 minutes of totality and shoot in a more continuous mode so you are able to bracket the exposure and have more image files to select from during the critical totality portion of the eclipse. Turn it back on for the portion of the eclipse that is coming out of the totality.
Because I did not have a celestial tracker mounted to the tripod I had to manually adjust the framing of the images about every 2 minutes or so. This was not a big deal. Any adjustments to your set up during the exposure time of the eclipse should be done carefully so you don’t bump the focus or exposure settings.

Safety
First and foremost, you must take precautions when viewing and photographing an eclipse. Failure to do so can result in eye damage or even blindness! As far as your camera goes you can severely damage your camera’s sensor without proper protection (see filter section below).
You cannot look at a solar eclipse without eye protection. You will want a pair of eclipse sunglasses; they are inexpensive cardboard frames with a strong filter mounted in them. Regular sunglasses are not strong enough!
Filters
In order to photograph the sun or the eclipse of the sun you need a special solar filter.
You will want a filter for each lens you plan to photograph the eclipse with. In other words, if you plan to shoot both a wide-angle and a telephoto shot of the eclipse make sure you order a filter for both lenses.
Solar Eclipse filters are specially designed filters to filter out the harmful wavelengths and enhance the image quality of the photograph. Typically, they are about 20 stops of neutral density. You should note that simply stacking 20 stops of regular neutral density filters doesn’t achieve the same protection as a solar eclipse filter and you can potentially damage your sensor by not using the correct filters.
Lenses
What sort of image you want to capture will determine what lens you’ll want to use.
If you want the spectacular image of the sun disk at full eclipse, you’ll want as long a lens as possible. The minimum would be 200mm, better to have something around 1000mm. For most people that means using a teleconverter.
If you have a second camera body (and tripod) you’ll want to set up a wide-angle context shot. Something that includes the surrounding landscape to give context to the eclipse. 24-70 or equivalent will be good for this.
Tripod
You’ll want a good study tripod for each setup.

Nothing depicts the soul of a place better than the faces that occupy it. Travel and Street photography can be some of the most rewarding and interesting photographs that we can make. It does, however, take a special approach and way of thinking.
In this article I will give some tips about how I work and the tools I use, both physical as well as mental, that help me get better images.
Many people who follow me tend to be landscape, nature, and scenic photographers. Street photography is a little out of their bailiwick, but if you have read this far, you are, at least interested in the genre. Many of my comments will compare, contrast, or point out the differences between the approach for landscape/nature vs. travel and street.

Perhaps the biggest difference between the two approaches is the use of a tripod. Most landscape/nature photography demands the use of a tripod, but most travel and street photography does not. The primary reason for this is that during travel and street photography the photographer is moving relatively quickly, and photographic opportunities present themselves and disappear in the blink of an eye, by comparison, the landscape photographer works slowly the methodically usually facing the same subject for a long time. The resulting photographs have very different objectives as well. It could be said that the landscape photographer tries to create “timeless images” whereas the travel/street photographer tries to create “timely images”.

This basic difference in camera technique and objectives means that the tools for one may not work as well as the tools for the other. In travel and street photography the old saying that the best camera is the camera you have in your hand is very true. The spontaneousness of many photographic opportunities is so random and fleeting that having a camera is half the battle. So carry a small “point & shoot” camera with you at all times. I have a couple that I use and really like. I use the Fujifilm X-70 and the Fujifilm X-100F there are newer models of both these cameras, but these do a great job. The X-100F is the most current camera and has a 24Mp sensor so it has all the resolution I need, in fact for my most recent exhibit in Mexico City several of the images were made with these cameras.

Using the smaller “point and shoot” style cameras achieves another objective for the photographer—they are less conspicuous than a typical full frame DSLR. This means the subjects frequently are less intimidated by the photographer. In fact, when I am not using one of my “point and shoot” cameras I strip my Fujifilm X-T4 down (removing the battery grip) and use a smaller wide angle prime lens. My favorites are the Zeiss 12mm f2.8, and the Voitlander 23mm f1.2. The primes lenses tend to be very sharp and usually are faster, which can make a huge difference when you are shooting after sunset, or in dark interiors.

Much of travel and street photography is done after sunset, after all this is when most cities really come alive. Handholding in low light presents some challenges. Neither of my “point and shoot” cameras has image stabilization but the size and relatively fast speed of the lens means I can still get great images. Shooting with my X-T4 with its 4 stops of IBIS (In Body Image Stabilization) while shooting with lenses that are 2.8 or faster means I can overcome many of the low light challenges. Street photography means you must get used to using high ISO settings. 1600 or even faster is not unusual. Most landscape photographers would cringe at these ISOs!

Approaching subjects in travel and street photography presents some special considerations. Unlike landscape photography where the subject never talks back, street photography requires the photographer to develop a relationship with their potential subject. This is typically the hardest part of making a transition from a landscape photographer to a travel/street photographer. But trust me, if I can do it, so can you. I was born and raised in a Minnesota/Norwegian family. Probably the most reserved bunch of people you could ever meet. Travel and street photography requires you to put yourself out there, you cannot be reserved! You have to engage people and communicate with them. Even when I can’t speak the local language, I find ways to communicate and put at ease potential subjects.

If this is an area where you struggle, consider these strategies to overcome your fears. One approach is to start by photographing details and subjects that don’t involve directly addressing people. Be aware, however, that in some cultures photographing someone’s animals can be more offensive than photographing people. So, start with details about the area that are interesting. After you’ve warmed up a little then try asking someone for a portrait. Even if you don’t speak the local language, you can make this request by gestures and eye contact. What is the worst that can happen? They turn you down? Go down the street and try again. Perseverance is key, did you create a masterpiece with your first attempt at a landscape photograph?
Some cultures are easier to photograph than others. Latin and African countries I have found to be very accepting of the camera, the Mid-east, and the US not so much. Photographing minors is best done only with the permission of the parent or guardian. Events, like parades, or street performances offer the opportunity for great photographs and the presence of a camera or photographer isn’t an issue.
There are two key requirements for great travel and street photography: always have a camera, and use it frequently! If you meet those two requirements, you will come home with some wonderful images.

]]>My latest equipment addition is the Olympus E-M1X (not the latest version) and the accompanying lens the Olympus Zuiko 300mm f4 also purchased used.
Those of you who know me know that for the last 5 years I’ve been shooting Fujifilm cameras. I love my Fuji gear. For what it is designed, I believe it is the best system on the market. There are no better cameras for Streetscapes, Landscapes, and Night Skies Landscape.

When it to came to my bird photography I was frustrated by the speed and accuracy of the Fujifilm autofocus system, so I looked around for a solution. Price was a concern and honestly with the prices that Canon, Sony, and Nikon are getting for a full-frame system it was more than I wanted to spend. I was lucky to come across a couple of very good deals, so I was able to purchase this system for under $3000 or less than what a full-frame body would have cost.

The other advantage is that with this camera and lens I have the equivalent reach of a 600mm f4! This camera has about 20Mp which is less than the big dogs. These images were made this morning in my backyard after just a few minutes of standing around and photographing the distant birds. When I downloaded the image files I was skeptical of how they would hold up to a crop so I didn’t crop much on the first round of processing. The resulting images looked so good that I went back and re-cropped the raw image files for better impact. I am very pleased with how they held up. The focus system is amazingly good. I’m going to like shooting with this camera! All images were shot at f5@ 1/640th second and ISO from 320 to 640

After enjoying Alamos, Mexico, for three days, we drive two and a half hours to El Fuerte through rich farmlands. El Fuerte is the second Pueblo Magico, or magic city, we visit. It is so designated because she was for three centuries the commercial and agricultural center of northern Mexico, and the former state capital of lands reaching well into Arizona.

Today, El Fuerte is a lush, colorful town with excellent hotels, desert gardens, a beautiful museum in the old fort, and delightful colonial architecture. We will be staying at the five-star Hidalgo Hotel that has a restaurant Anthony Bourdain claimed had the best prawns in the world, I don’t know about that, but they were terrific. In the morning we will rise early to board El Chepe – Mexico’s only remaining passenger train for an unforgettable ride through Copper Canyon.

This train ride explores for eight hours the largest and deepest canyon in North America. Yes, you read that. It is much bigger than the Grand Canyon and is just as impressive in a very different way. The geography of Copper Canyon is more of a plate tectonic fold structure than the erosion marvel that is the Grand Canyon. We get to see the side canyons, waterfalls, rivers, and indigenous villages twice. The day ends in Divisadero, Mexico, where we will sleep on the edge of the canyon with one of the world’s great views. These two days are full of sights, sounds, and photographic opportunities.
