It’s been a while. I hate having to report that there’s not much to report, or that I’m trying out some solutions and don’t have any good description of what’s up just yet. So I don’t. That’s about to change, though.

Obstacles to your progress can be sorted into three categories. Yeah, yeah, you can subdivide them until the cows come home, but at the biggest level, there are a trio of options that you absolutely must sort things into, and do it honestly.

I have, and have dealt with, all three, so I’m not getting high and mighty with you. This is real, and ignoring it will prevent any sort of progress.

The jumble of crap between you and where you want to be is made of distinct, but probably interrelated, obstacles. Weakening any of them will help weaken and remove the others. The removal of some of them can pull the support from a network of others, and you go roaring through the debris. Your problem and mine is that their interwoven nature lets them support each other. It looks like an unbreakable wall. Where do you start?

Start with sorting them. Isolate each from its neighbors, ignoring for now their connections to other issues. Each can be put into one and exactly one of these categories:

  1. Unchangeable. You have permanent heart or lung damage that prevents normal cardio exercise. Your metabolism was destroyed early on by lithium to treat your bipolar disease. You are bipolar. You are very short. You are too young. Whatever it is, and it may not be something that gets in the way of others who have it, it gets in the way of you, and it can’t be changed, just endured forever or until it slowly changes on its own.
  2. Impeding. You have a (healable) injury. You hover at the poverty line. You weigh way too much. You don’t know how. Whatever it is, it exists between you and your best self, and it must be removed mostly or completely in order for you to proceed.
  3. Inconvenient. You’re tired. You’re hooked on potato chips or a video game or beer. Your demanding friends or TV series list or consecutive sports seasons to watch takes up your time. You haven’t found a course or learning that you like or an exercise method or good eating habits you can stick to. Whatever it is, it pretends to impede your progress, but in truth it’s bad habits and dodging what you know to be right and good.

All of these pretend to be more of a problem than they are. Inconvenience whines to you that it’s a real problem, and if you give in, it suddenly is one. Impediments present themselves as unremovable issues, but if you take the panic from them and look at them directly, they will almost always reveal themselves as something that can be knocked down, and often a linchpin to removing other problems. Even unchangeable things can usually be worked around. Yes, a height of 5’8″ will preclude one from a career in professional basketball. Yes, the nonexistence of midichlorians or any of their effects pretty much prevents you from being a functioning Jedi. The fully realized version of you won’t have a problem with that, though: you will become what you are made to be.

Here’s an example I know pretty well: Me

That bloody-eyed picture is of my eye, and taken maybe an hour before I posted this. Looks better than it did on Friday. The headaches I mentioned before got worse and more frequent, and to make a long story short, after several tests and trials, no one knows what’s causing them. And then the blood vessel burst in my eye. That’s happened before a couple times, always when I’m under an unusual amount of stress, but this was by far the worst. The sum of the symptoms suggested a few things which would be pretty dire: a growing aneurysm, auditory nerve tumor, cyst, carotid blockage. Any of those would be bad, and some could actually kill me in the middle of a set. I didn’t even know if push-ups would cause the eye problem again and horrifyingly worse.

That prevented me doing more than low-grade exercise for over a month, halting my progress, clobbering my goals, and showing me just how much I’ve come to enjoy lifting. It was a serious impediment that threatened to actually be a permanent, perhaps unchangeable problem that I had no idea how to work with.

Many tests later, the problem is definitely none of the items I just listed. Exercise won’t kill me, mere push-ups are known as safe, and I can get back to it at last.

Still don’t know what the cause is, though, and the splodey-head effect is still there. The current medical guess is high blood pressure, in spite of my numbers being better than they once were when I didn’t have headaches from it. A couple days ago I asked what I should do about my circular problem: blood pressure spikes cause headaches/blood vessel bursts; to lower blood pressure I need to lose weight; to lose weight I need real exercise; serious exercise causes a blood pressure spike. They gave me a drug for the problem, and while I like neither having to take it nor how it makes me feel, I’m on it until I can get things under control by better means. Hey, whatever motivates you makes you stronger. Unless it kills you, of course.

So here we have an impediment-level obstacle that puffed itself into I’m Gonna Kill You scariness to look unfixable. It’s not gone, but the method of knocking it down is known, and taking it down will advance several other goals into the bargain.

As an additional problem, I pulled the lower tendon on my left bicep shortly before the headache problem became preventative. I have to be careful and actively work to heal it, but it’s an impediment to remove, and I’m removing it.

Sort Correctly

The biggest mistake people make in looking at why they aren’t moving toward the life they think they want is mistaking inconveniences for impediments. “I don’t have time” is sometimes a valid problem. And by sometimes I mean rarely. Almost never. The time you spend keeping up with some show or team is time not spent advancing your cause. “But I’m tired,” comes the whine, “I need a mental break.” No, you probably don’t. In fact, not taking a break means you’ll be less likely to even want one the next time.

Everything in your life will improve if you simply disallow inconvenience to masquerade as impediments. Your self-discipline will almost automatically improve. You’ll get more done, and be more satisfied with your life. You’ll feel like you have more elbow room in your own brain. The ripples expand in ways hard to believe for those who haven’t done it.

For the past few months, my progress with both fitness and house improvements has been hampered by headaches: If I do any major efforts – and literally, any major lifting – I get a thunderous headache that stays around for a fair while and usually requires Tylenol to return me to usefulness. Not a problem when doing basic carpentry, but shifting large amounts of dirt or gravel will eventually invoke its wrath. It’s pretty reliable as an effect of doing deadlifts, though whether that’s due to the lift itself or its place at the end of the routine, I don’t know.

Headaches have also become part of my general daily life, though usually far lesser and more annoying than hurtful. My main complaint is that they damage my ability to think clearly.

By now you’re probably wondering why I haven’t asked a doctor about this. I wondered the same, and yesterday finally got looked at. The conclusion was inconclusive. I’m to undergo a battery of tests next Tuesday, including an MRI, which is one of my favorite things in the world to not have to do. In the mean time, no heavy lifting for me. This is not going to do my burgeoning gym habits any good. On the up side, it might prevent an aneurysm, so that’s something.

It could be a symptom of something else entirely. Could be a circulatory issue. Could be stress. Could be something I’ve never heard of.

The one thing for certain is that it needs to be taken care of quickly. It’s interfering with my fitness plans. It’s the opposite of being in my health plans. And it seems wisest to fix the thing before I succeed in changing employers. That change itself is being dramatically slowed by the frequent cloudiness of thinking the pain brings.

Taken as a whole, it’s hard not to be depressed about yet another something getting in the way of advancement. It’s definitely stressing me out.

So now my head hurts.

It looks like I’ve wandered away from my work here. Nothing could be farther from the truth.

It’s true that I haven’t posted anything in a while, and I owe you some explanation for that. I haven’t been hibernating, or giving up, or any nonsense like that. The truth is that I’ve been updating and developing my philosophy and plans so quickly that every time I begin to write about them, I discover they’re changing underneath the post itself.

The months of November, December, and January have been spent in a variety of ways:

  1. Several projects have been done around my house, major, time-consuming, necessary, and very boring to read about. They represent a fair bit of the clearing of the decks I began some time ago, finishing off a variety of commitments and promises, establishing personal infrastructure and easing the “overhead” of life, and so on.
  2. Family holiday season involves a lot of holidays. And family. And gifts and such.
  3. I’m increasingly aware that I need to change my work situation before some of my real goals can be achieved, and no small amount of time and energy has gone toward finding a solution to that.
  4. My philosophy continues to codify itself, becoming more practical as it builds, and shifting direction somewhat in the process. The things I want to tell you keep getting overwritten (so to speak) with better versions, more complete outlooks, and a way of living that becomes more and more closely aligned with reality – which is, or should be, the goal of any philosophy. The one that makes the most productive use of reality wins.

I now have pages and pages of notes and references, ideas and observations. Getting that into something coherent is taking a certain amount of time, too.

But in all this, I promise I haven’t forgotten the premise of this blog, to document my journey from frustration to power. Recording every quibble with myself over how to approach things isn’t going to be very useful, though. Best to show and tell.

I’m also not going to pretend I’ve always had all the answers. There’s no question that this journey is one starring someone whose inertia, whose frustration at being screwed over by doing The Right Things, has become too painful to ignore, but who sees a way out. And if I can do it, you can do it.

At this point, I think I can tell you how. Specifically.

Better: I’m about to show you.

I don’t rant and rave. Certainly not in the usual social media circles where such things are the norm. I don’t cry, hyperventilate, wring my hands, retire to a fainting couch, or angrily assume the worst in others’ thoughts, and if I did any of that, and did it publicly, I sure as hell wouldn’t claim to be Strong while doing it.

This is partly because I’ve learned not to let things get to me – I react, medically, very badly to some forms of stress – but partly because I don’t come from an assumption of weakness. And, by the way, claiming strength while demonstrating weakness is frankly pathetic. Several times in the past day I’ve had to remind myself not to troll my friends and acquaintances when they’re being foolish. Better to demonstrate a better way, as a teaching method, and even better to not endanger my legend. (This is, by the way, an example of having one motivation for your goals/policies for when you’re wearing a white hat, and another to support the same policies when the hat’s black.)

In case it’s not clear what’s happening here (or you’re reading this some time down the road), the United States has just held a very contentious presidential election, and people seem to have, collectively, lost their minds. It’s even worse than 8 years previous, when Obama was elected, and that was a new low for my lifetime.

Don’t be pathetic.

I was unfazed then and now. Am I a superior breed of human, immune to the tides of emotion and easily objective beyond the ken of my overreactive species? I’m tempted to joke, “Well, perhaps,” but the truth is entirely the opposite: my nature is very passionate and strongly emotional. Serenity does not come to me easily, let alone instinctively. But it was that very tossing about of emotions that showed me I absolutely needed to get ahold of the situation. The problem was that as soon as any sort of fervor arrived, the swirl of emotion blew away even the clear memory of how I was going to tamp it down or deflate it.

It took a while to realize that the solution was to set up a proper frame of mind that doesn’t lend itself to the problem in the first place.

And by “a while” I mean it took an embarrassingly large number of years. One reason I’m recording all this here, remember, is that I don’t want you to slog through a problem if I can hand you a tool to get past it a lot faster.

In this case, the tool is an application of the core of my Jovian philosophy, which I’ll be laying out pretty shortly. The aspect I wish I could convey to people today – though they’d have to wait until they calm themselves, because it’s preventative, not curative – is that coming from a default position of fear will cause a regular, predictable loss of self-control. Panic. The basic point of view of “what’s trying to kill me now?” is valid enough if you’re a rabbit or a rodent; but you aren’t. And what do you think homo sapien means, anyway? You have the ability to examine your thought processes and change them.

So change them.

No one is saying it’s easy. It’s certainly not automatic, and it’s rarely if ever instant. You’re retraining long-trodden neural pathways, and they will resist. Moving a bad habit to a good one is a notorious challenge. It’s not as hard as many seem to think, though. When you see the change happening, it is so freeing that you’ll want more of it.

What needs to happen is this:

  1. Notice when you have a lot of negative emotion. Don’t make excuses for it.
  2. Look closely at what prompted it. Find the fear and panic behind the storm.
  3. Show yourself the presumption of weakness/helplessness that lies behind the fear.

You need to look squarely at that presumption, though it will not want to be looked at directly. Repeat every time it happens. You will, at first, only be able to shame yourself into restraining visible outbursts. But hey, that’s an improvement. External, yes, but an actual, tangible improvement. Once you have your actions more under control, a self-reinforcing cycle will begin between that process and an ability to inject objectivity to your point of view (real, calm objectivity, not the hysterical ravings the fear tried to tell you were objective before), showing yourself that you are not nearly as helpless as you believed.

This is not strength, but it is the beginning of it. It will allow it to develop. It may be, for you, the start of the removal of a strait-jacket that’s kept you from who you actually are.

It’s making me crazy that I’m so busy right now that I can’t write very much, when I am stuffed full of things to tell you! Here’s the general run-down, and a taste of the revelation I had.

This past (long) weekend was spent at the Tall Ships Festival in Dana Point, California. It’s a lot of fun every year, with big, gorgeous sailing ships and great people and amazing experiences. I play a pirate (naturally, I suppose) in the show on the brig the Pilgrim which reenacts some historical battle. There are tales to tell, and I’ll get to them as fast as I can, starting with a video in the next day or so on my YouTube channel.

My plan was to take a few days away from things, from the deranged, overbooked, crashing madly mayhem which is my normal life, and switch to something easy and fun and almost completely unconnected to anything else. So I did.

Then the most amazing little events happened. Again, I don’t have time to properly go into it just now, but here’s the important bit: I wasn’t expecting a thing. Just having some fun. Using some skills I don’t get to bring out very often. Playing with people and bringing some silly happiness.

Along the way, one of the biggest blocks in my mind, one of the most crippling doubts I carry, got shattered. I still need to haul away the debris, but it’s definitively broken. There are images, sensations, I can recall to mind from now on if I doubt the core of my worth, and the fears of the id return. The id is the most primitive part of the personality, and gets very little respect, but unless it’s solid and secure, everything built on it – which is everything else – will be unsure and unreliable.

In other words, this completely out-of-the-blue validation gave me the key I’ve been looking for to crystallize the Jovian philosophy and make it totally functional and repeatable. It lit the fuse.

Now to fly.

It’s one of the best feelings in the world: You’re motivated, excited, blasting into an amazing future that you built yourself. Success builds into success and the virtuous spiral sends you into the stratosphere. You are the king of your domain, and your domain is whatever you cast your steely gaze upon. You know why lions roar.

Oh, you’re not there yet?

Motivation is a lot harder to come by before things are going well. You can get excited about a new idea, a new fitness program, whatever sparks your mind… for a while. Inertia sucks the most out of your efforts when you’re just getting going. If you’ve ever pushed anything you’ll know that once it’s begun moving, once the inertia and friction have been at all overcome, things become almost magically easier.

It’s exactly the same with your mind, your motivation, your self-discipline. Only the inertia (and friction) tends to try to bring you to a halt again once you’ve made your initial push. And this time there’s less of the excitement animating your efforts to keep going.

This is probably not news to you, unless you’ve been in motion toward your goals for so long that you’ve forgotten what it’s like to start. If so, hey, good for you. Remind yourself once in a while so you have patience and don’t get too high-handed with those just building their first momentum, and to remind yourself just how far you’ve come.

Odds are, though, you not only remember but have experienced it recently. It’s horrible. It’s the thing that knocks far too many into a life of mediocrity. It’s failure predicting and then producing itself. Then it gets to torture you about it for the rest of your life.

So what are my options?

The easiest way to defeat inertia is to be launched into successful action by circumstances aligning with your talents. It’s a lot easier to keep going once you’re in motion and can look back at evidence that you can and have done well. This situation is also kind of rare and depends on things you can’t depend on. Odds are against wandering into success. Grab it if it comes by, but don’t wait for it.

The most effective way to get moving and never stop is to restructure your essential philosophy to see the world for what it really offers, and build from that a mindset that naturally moves you forward. Changing your mindset is crucial to changing your circumstances. Supporting it with the right mental framework, the right foundation, will allow you to maintain it indefinitely and without cognitive dissonance. Admittedly, this takes a while. We’ll discuss this in depth in later articles and with very specific actions to make it work for you. For now, though, we need something to get us moving now.

The fastest way to start doing what needs to be done and get you past the annoying mental blocks that keep you in your place is to set up little motivations and behaviors that directly subvert or dodge them. We’re not talking about good habits, which are necessary, but the things that will allow you to develop those habits in the first place.

Have you ever tried to “get in the habit of” one thing or another, only to give up for no visible reason? You might try again and again, and eventually give up entirely, deciding you don’t have the self-discipline, mental capacity, or basic worth as a human to manage it. Though it is true that self-discipline is vastly important – one of the key parts of the Jovian philosophy – there is a reason one of the biggest hurdles to developing it is the lack of self-discipline, itself. It’s a catch-22. It’s also not exactly true.

Imagine that the problems you want to get rid of, whether bad behaviors to kill or missing good behaviors, are creatures living in your head. We’ll talk about this more some other time, because it’s very nearly a literal truth, but for now consider what such a parasite would do to preserve itself: it would find ways to derail your desired good habits. There are endless ways it can do so, but they all look like a lack of willpower. Yes, of course straight willpower can overcome it – that’s why self-discipline is part of the core, here. But these things in you have done everything they could to make sure you have as little of it as possible. You have to develop it as you develop the better behavior.

Flip The Helplessness Script

If you listen to people who have trouble controlling their actions, you will hear some very odd things. They will express a feeling of helplessness and often say phrases like, “and then I find myself…” It’s like they’re outside their own body. It sounds bizarre and pathetic. It is, of course, but it is also real. They really have allowed themselves to be run by their self-destructive mental scripts, slaves to their own whims and most surface-level feelings. What is happening inside is a knowledge of what they should be doing (or not doing) getting set aside by a wheedling little child rejecting it with an obnoxious, “But I don’t wannoooooo!” And for lack of any idea that they’re actually in charge of their own actions, they go along with the child.

This is the sort of thing that needs to be killed with fire. If you find yourself with that sort of business going on between your ears, I will do my level best to help you get free. The change in your life will be immeasurable.

You can actually make use of it, though, in a reversed sort of way, and eventually remove the effects of that inner whiner. See, that “outside their own body” effect can be used against the behavior that spawned it, and it’s even handy for those who have never experienced it. You act exactly as though the resistance was a real brat in front of you. No, I don’t mean smacking it silly or using chloroform. I mean, you let it have its whine in your head and, without giving explanation to yourself or considering anything at all, do what you know needs doing. It says it doesn’t want to go to the gym, as your hands and feet get your shoes on. It warns that you’ll be tired and achy as you get in the car. It tries to get you to stop early but you just move on to the next lift, not even a word spoken internally to yourself. The mental parasite will throw everything it can at you, and you, without negotiation or even recognition, simply do it.

The power of this is hard to overestimate, when it comes to prying loose your ability to get things moving.

Get A Hero; Get A Villain

You’re going to need to have motivations, both when you start and as you go along. Obviously. You have some reason to be improving yourself, or you wouldn’t be doing it. The thing is, having only 1 motivation isn’t always enough. Sometimes the noble cause for which you labor is going to sound stupid, boring, or just really not enough to drag yourself to whatever needs to be done. Sometimes you’re just in a bad mood and don’t want to do the Right Thing. Sometimes the reward on the other side of your goal isn’t as interesting as completely ignoring the goal. When your main incentive isn’t helping, it helps to have something more low-minded to work with. Something people would look at as shallow, or questionable, or whatever. Something the bad mood will see as a good idea, to exactly the same effect, which is getting you to do what your most rational self knows needs to be done.

I call them hero and villain motives, but they don’t need to have that sort of moral judgement about them for them to work. Never hurts, though…

It’s easy to find different, even competing motivations, when you look honestly at it. People like to think they’re doing things for virtuous, long-term reasons like heart health, financial independence, helping their community, improving their house, etc. And they are, at some level. But if “healthy heart” sounds like a damned boring reason to hit the gym, thinking about the reaction of the hotties to your new and improved body could do the trick. Or looking better (and with a harder punch) than that smarmy sociopath who hit on your wife last year. Same regimen: your body will improve either way, and won’t if you don’t go. This is the time to ponder the idea of living well being the best revenge. This is the time to fantasize spending the new resources on your whims. This is the time to think of thumbing your nose at the ones who said you weren’t good enough. It’s the villainous side that will get you through the times when the hero makes you roll your eyes. That nobler goal will come along no matter how you get there, so long as you get there. And odds are you’ll be in a better mood by then.

Just For Now

If you’re breaking promises to yourself, flip the script on that, too. Maybe you want something you know you shouldn’t eat. Tell yourself you’ll get to it later. When it’s later, tell yourself the same thing again.

You don’t want to do the writing for your book, or the code for your site. Eh, just do some. Get some ideas down. Maybe work through and clarify a bit. You can always stop and come back later. And maybe you’ll find it’s flowing well enough to do a bit more. Then a bit more.

That new language’s vocabulary is not going to stick in your head. You know it. No problem: just go over it anyway, two or three times. You already know language is best studied in many smaller blocks of time than in one huge cramming session. Tell yourself that doing it now is really the lazy way, and after you’re done you can ignore it until tomorrow.

The thing is to slide through the defenses of the unwanted behavior so that it doesn’t object when you go and do something productive. Use the metaphor of the camel’s nose in the tent to your own advantage.

This also applies to screwing up, by the way. Someone trying to eat well has a muffin at the morning staff meeting. “Oh well, might as well have the pizza for lunch,” he concludes.

No.

That muffin, that mistake, was only for then. You can’t undo it, exactly, but you can halt the problem where it was. Lunch time is a new meal. This time you’ll do the right thing. The meeting is in the past.

Think Less

The way I find that is most effective in clobbering any chance of improving myself is analysis paralysis. There’s a certain guilty relief in telling yourself that you’re just not quite ready yet. Not ready for starting that business, for doing free weights, for anything. Truth is, at a certain point you’re just spinning your wheels trying to be certain of the parts you’ll never be certain of. When that happens, it’s time to take action. Pretty much any action. You’ll come back to thinking about it later – and really, you’ll never stop.

We’ll discuss this in different ways here, because the pattern comes along in a variety of areas in your life. In fact, I think in the next article we should go into the upward spiral of learning and doing, and why it is the only way to really get anywhere.

Tiny Steps, Growing

About 2500 years ago, Lao-Tzu wrote, “A journey of a thousand li begins with a single step.” So often, discouragement comes when after a few of these steps you realize you haven’t gone very far.

For the first steps, you won’t. And that’s fine. Maintaining motivation isn’t as simple as Just Do It, at least in the early stages. The psychology is more complex than you just being a lazy, worthless slug who can’t hold it together. There are plenty of asshats who will tell you crap like that. Don’t be one of them. You can learn to hold it together. You must. Insist on improvement; forgive yourself, but do not allow a repeat of mistakes. You won’t do it perfectly. I know this because you’re human. But you must return to the right track immediately. The good news is that getting back on track is very satisfying.

There will be times when you leap ahead, and times when you pretty much fly.

The beginning, and especially the part right after the beginning, is almost never those times.

But as you get your stride, you will move with more speed and better determination, and in a more certain direction. What, you think Usain Bolt went from crawling as a baby directly to sprinting? Besides, no one said you ever had to sprint. You need to just move in a good direction and with the understanding that nothing happens in a straight line and perfect acceleration. By moving at all you’ll be ahead of most of humanity, and more importantly, ahead of where and who you were.

Alright, I have to admit something to you: I’m frustrated as hell.

That’s not why I haven’t been writing much – more the result of it. But sometimes that’s just the way it is.

Let me explain.

Actually, let me give some examples:

  • Experiments don’t go as planned, or take for stinking ever to give actionable, reportable results.
  • An injury in my neck that just won’t stay fixed gets in the way of exercise.
  • My microphone seems to have gone AWOL, and danged if I can figure out where it went.
  • Recurring obligations to others have not been finished off nearly so much as I need them to be.
  • A pile of serious expenses has seriously delayed pretty much everything I want to do.

Add to this the heat of summer at the edge of a desert, and the above troubles and more combine with a lack of energy to destroy any normal motivation. And speaking of heat, it’s over 80 degrees until at least 10pm. Even if I didn’t leave for work at 5:30am and return after 6:30pm, it would be a challenge to get much done around the house, where the most urgent, if least interesting, projects are. As it is, they tend to need both daylight and heavy lifting.

It’s very easy to become not just discouraged but despondent. The problems themselves form circles (or tangles) that reinforce each issue. Any one of them breaking free of the spiral could give the mental energy to blast through another, then another. Instead, they pile on and kill self-discipline, progress, and hope.

Does any of this sound familiar?

It’s hard sometimes to look at the bloggers who have their act together, have the time to schedule their workouts or projects whenever they like and give advice that only works if you do too, could drop everything and build their own business because no one’s depending on them and they’ve got no debt, or somehow have this well of self control that they assume everyone else has or can just switch on. You look at them and think, “Hey, some of us have a day job. Some of us are old before our time. We’re tired and don’t want to be tired any more, but are buried in crap and can’t struggle free. Some of us are really young, have very little life experience and no money and no freaking idea where to start and frankly we don’t want to go down the road everyone is insisting we take.”

This isn’t that kind of blog. Obviously. I’m telling you all the frustrations I’m slogging through, though I wouldn’t dream of telling people I know in person this sort of thing. We’ll get into why that’s the case another time, but for now, here’s the thing: I’m telling you because I want you to understand that I’m not someone who natively has it all together.

Yeah, I have a plan. I’ve seen and read and listened to and carefully watched hundreds and hundreds of people and their output. I’ve combined that with modern observations and ancient wisdom to arrive at a philosophy that I’m presenting here in this blog. I know it will work: it just requires breaking free of the horrible inertia that grabs hold and tries to convince you that more effort is just more effort that at best will yield nothing.

Note: I am not exaggerating. I am not intentionally letting myself settle into a hole because I know I can just hop back out of it to more impressive effect. I am showing you that this philosophy (observed structure of how things work) and praxeology (observed structure of how to make things work) can work for you because it’ll work for me, and I’m no different than you.

Now hang on a minute: Didn’t I start on this already?

Yeah. That’s the thing I’m trying to tell you, today. You’ve probably come across motivational memes and posters and whatnot that tell you that success is just a matter of getting up 1 more time than you fall. Sounds all very nice when you’re not in the process of your 14th fall.

Turns out, though, it’s true.

The troubles I listed above – and please believe me that it’s only a partial list – are not what needs to be overcome in order to move forward. They need fixing, but they’re not the point of origin of what might make me fail. The only thing that can actually torpedo my chance to pull things together is if I simply give up.

Consider this adage: “You make your own luck.” What does that actually mean? It probably deserves its own article, but the short form is that you learn and practice and prepare and build, knowing full well that your chance might not come along to make something of it.

That’s making luck? Yeah.

Because if you’ve done that, not only will you be able to take advantage of opportunities should they appear, but you’ll be much more attuned to the presence of opportunities in the first place. To the outsider, it looks like luck. It’s not.

You know the old saying, “If at first you don’t succeed…”? I hate that saying. It gets used without thought and as a dismissive bit of feelgoodery. Thing is, it’s true. And if you’re buried in crap, and the whole freaking universe seems out to prevent you from getting anywhere, it really is the only thing to do.

Are you going to fail again? Probably. Driving yourself to do when you see absolutely no point in doing, when one idiotic glitch after another gets in your way, when you’re tired and brain-dead and dejected, is one of the hardest things in the world. We’ll work on that together. Like with various health items, I’ve been experimenting on myself to find out what works and what doesn’t. I’m sure this can be dealt with.

Failing isn’t a permanent state unless you make it one. Everyone who’s a success has failed, and failed a lot. If you don’t consider yourself a success yet, expect to fail more. It happens. Get out there. It’s true that you can’t fail if you don’t try – but that’s the thought that keeps you in your miserable place. The deeper truth is the other side of it: You can’t stop failing until you try enough times, and learn from each.

I had planned to jump into my core philosophy and build things from there, but I see now that it won’t make much difference unless the will to use it can be got to. So instead we’ll next discuss killing that inertia.

Today it’s on the minds of a great many people. Maybe it always is, but today it’s conscious and open.

What do you choose? Will you be independent? Will you trust your ability to make choices, exercise power, do what is right?

Will you submit to another, trust that a measure of safety, uncertain as it is, will be given by those who control your actions at will?

Are you an adult? Will you give up that question’s relevance and submit to a life, not of ease, but at least without need for making decisions?

Choose carefully. Right now your chains are your choice. Hand them to someone else and reversing the decision may be very hard, even dangerous.

Everyone serves something or someone, make no mistake. Those who insist they do not – that they serve nothing but themselves – are often the most slavishly devoted to their unacknowledged masters. If you choose wisely, you can effectively live in the service of freedom.

Freedom, all freedom, comes at a price. The very smallest price is ownership of the consequences of one’s own actions. So many are unwilling to shoulder even that burden. They fear freedom for its costs, mouthing demands for it as they give it away. The freedom of the toddler is what they insist on, and receive. They claim to be powerful and strong and the equal of those who would be free, and demonstrate otherwise at every turn.

History is not kind to such foolishness. Reality asserts itself without regard.

You are given the choice between freedom and responsibility, or their opposite.

Choose freedom. Always choose freedom.

There’s a horrible backlog of articles building up in my head, and I need to get them going or they’re going to drive me around the bend.

One little problem, though: as I ponder these, and start making notes, it turns out that most of the time I’m not the only one thinking about them. More often than not, a few days after I assemble thoughts about something, someone else will write something either very similar or with observations that overlap mine by, oh, 30% or so. Not that I’m worried I’ll be accused of plagiarism: my thoughts are pretty distinctly my own, even if a lot of people come to similar conclusions when looking out over the same world. It’s just very strange that we should be covering such things pretty much at the same time. Ideas are universal, it seems.

So back to work for Nicholas. I need to get the philosophy out there so I can get more of the practical applications going. No shortage of things to say.
