Richard Strozzi-Heckler says the ‘self’ is the leader’s primary source of power and effectiveness. The success or failure of leaders is more than a game of expertise and strategy. Presence and how we move in the world is key.

“It has become abundantly clear to me that we do not transform ourselves and our thinking through good ideas or hope. To make sustainable shifts in our behavior and way of thinking, we have to embody new schemas.”

Somatic Coaching was developed as a way to cultivate the self through the body. In somatics, the body is not just a physiological entity but is the center of our lived experience in the world. It is a way to move toward mastery in our lives, our leadership, and achieving our highest potential.

There is emotional and physical cost to being distanced from our bodies. Consider this: Richard posits that the body is a primary conduit for cultivation of self…and the ‘self’ is the leader’s primary source of power. If a leader is lacking deep self-awareness and sense awareness, they are likely missing out on higher levels of their own potential.

Growing up in Kenya Shailja experienced the impact of war on the lives and spirit of the people. Her path took her on a journey from working on Wall Street to living a monastic life, running non-profits, eventually finding her voice in poetry. She uses text, voice, body and critical thinking to delve for truth and dissect power.Today she is a performance artist bringing her work to people around the world. Her one-woman show, Migritude, unfolds hidden histories of women’s lives in the bootprint of Empire, from India to East Africa.

Shailja’s powerful performances bring her audiences to an introspective space of connection with the raw emotion and impact of war and oppression. The irresistible passion and eloquence of her words touches people at a core level and inspires them to take action. I saw Shailja on the main stage at a Bioneers Conference with a standing room only crowd of hundreds of people. Her performance was breathtaking, and we were all moved so deeply – it was as if we were in a trance, not able to move from the moment. Have you ever truly “heard silence” ? It was as powerful as her oration. Then at once, the entire audience leapt to its feet and began applause and cheers and tears that went on and on. Following that performance Shailja said, “The fifteen-second pindrop silence after I finished my performance was worth three standing ovations.”

Lyly was born in Nicaragua, a country of conflict with a long history of turmoil, and ultimately her family had to flee because of their political beliefs. “I was born into a political family and we were ‘living’ international issues. I was born into a family where people were always making choices about staying and leaving and asking the questions: Where is home? Is it time to go or stay?”

She has worked with and consulted to the United Nations; as an advisor to the Vatican in the trafficking of human beings; in war zones training diplomats, human rights workers, the military, and tortured women and children. The unifying theme for her work: compassion and dignity for self and others. Lyly says that we cannot begin to help others heal if we cannot heal ourselves. “How can you teach peace if you are not peaceful within yourself?”

She helps individuals, families, groups, corporations, and entire nations to connect with their inherent peace making capacities, teaching conflict resolution, non-violent communication, corporate social responsibility, and multicultural consultancy skills.
