The idea for the platform came from lake residents who have been seeing bald eagles and ospreys. Ospreys, a fish-eating bird of prey, readily accept artificial nesting platforms, provided they are placed in favorable habitat. The marsh next to Waldeck Island Nature Preserve provides such a location. The birds naturally use dead trees and snags for their nesting sites, which frequently decay and fall over. Artificial platforms are safer and can be effective for encouraging nesting efforts by these birds.

Cadillac Area Land Conservancy has a wildlife viewing tower at Waldeck Island Nature Preserve near the nesting platform for public viewing. With any luck you’ll see one of nature’s great events, the successful nesting of an eagle or osprey.

The 11.5 acre Waldeck Island Nature Preserve is open to the public for quiet sports such as hiking and snowshoeing. It is located a short distance south of Cadillac off M-115. The entrance is off the end of Friedrich Strasse Court.

The Cadillac Area Land Conservancy has protected 2,500 acres in Missaukee, Osceola, Wexford, and northern Lake and Mason counties in northern Michigan.

one of the main reasons landowners choose to preserve their land is for future generations to enjoy as it gets passed down from generation to generation.

Did you know… there are about 9 species of bats that call Michigan home? White Nose Syndrome (WNS) on this sensitive species of mammal has had an impact. More than 1,300 species of bats make up a quarter of the mammal population on the earth. In an effort to assist this animal with alternative roosting for summer months, our Ecology Club designed two-chambered bat houses and four-chambered bat nurseries which need installing.

Location: Meet at the Waldeck Island Nature Preserve at Stone Ledge Lake. Go to our website for directions. Teams will leave from the parking lot to erect poles with bat boxes at our other preserves.

Bring work gloves and a desire to enhance our local wildlife diversity with a fun project!

After a brief meeting, Brad West will present and discuss fall mushroom hunting. Brad has been hunting mushrooms most of his life and it started with his grandmother and mother when he was young. Now living in the Kalamazoo area, he plans his free time exploring the state of Michigan for many different mushrooms spring through fall. Learn how to easily identify 5 to 6 of the fall edibles and enjoy a sample of Brad’s mushroom soup and dips.
