The Society for East Asian Archaeology (SEAA) is pleased to announce that the Ninth SEAA Worldwide Conference will be held in Daegu, South Korea from 29 June to 3 July 2022. The conference will be hosted by Professor Sungjoo Lee at Kyungpook National University (KNU) in Daegu, South Korea in HYBRID format.
All sessions will be available both online and in person to all conference registrants. Anyone who wishes to participate but is not yet a SEAA member will have to sign up for membership and can then access all sessions online as a non-presenting participant.

Résumé de l’intervention :
Anthropology is an innately comparative discipline and yet, it has been noted, contemporary anthropologists are generally squeamish about explicitly comparative work. There are good reasons for this—from the naïve generalizations of the discipline’s Victorian forefathers to the overly mechanistic generalizations of structuralism. What is proposed here is more modest, something in the manner of a dialogue that brings things learned in Korean shaman shrines into conversation with other popular religious traditions where gods/spirits/energies become visible through their material realization in the corporeal bodies of spirit mediums and shamans and via ensouled statues, paintings, and masks. In Hindu and Buddhist worlds (including Korea), such objects are produced in commercial workshops where knowing craftsmanship entangles (what we commonly call) technique with what we might (more cautiously) call magic to produce an efficacious or agentive image. In Korean shaman practice and among spirit mediums in Vietnam, Myanmar, and Bali, these statues, masks, and paintings are intended to facilitate the presence of otherwise unseen entities in ritual settings. This presentation describes a comparative project that became Kendall’s recently published book, Mediums and Magical Things. As a work of comparison, the discussion reveals how questions derived from ethnographic encounters in one place may yield surprising answers in another and sometimes enrich an understanding of the point from which one began.

This is the sixth session of the webinar series 2021-2022 of the ERC project team, “Aftermath of the East Asian War of 1592-1598”. In this session Prof. Rebekah Clements (ICREA/Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona) and Dr. Seung Yeon Sang (Universitat Autònoma de Barcelona, Visiting Scholar), will introduce their forthcoming online exhibition “Stories of Clay: The Lives and Works of Chosŏn Korean Potters in Tokugawa Japan”.
BACKGROUND
The “Aftermath of the East Asian War of 1592-1598” project is a five year, European Research Council Starting Grant project (2018-2023) run by ICREA professor Rebekah Clements at the Department of Translation, Interpreting, and East Asian Studies at the Autonomous University of Barcelona. The project seeks to understand the legacy of the East Asian War of 1592-1598, also known as the Imjin War and Toyotomi Hideyoshi’s invasions of Korea. Aftermath will be the first large scale investigation to combine Japanese, Korean, and Chinese sources in order to understand, not the war itself, but something which is arguably even more important: the aftermath and its implications for early modern East Asia. Our research focuses on three themes; Social change / Environment and economy / Diffusion of Technology.

Prix Découverte Louis Roederer 2022
Les Rencontres d’Arles associent le Prix Découverte Louis Roederer aux galeries, centres d’art, espaces associatifs, lieux indépendants et institutions.
En effet, par leur travail de défricheur, ces structures sont souvent les premières à accompagner les artistes émergent·e·s. Elles peuvent proposer un projet d’exposition d’un·e artiste qu’elles défendent et dont le travail a été récemment découvert ou mérite de l’être auprès d’une audience internationale.
Accompagnés par une commissaire, dix projets seront retenus et exposés lors de la prochaine édition des Rencontres d’Arles. Cette année, la commissaire invitée du Prix Découverte Louis Roederer 2022 est Taous R. Dahmani.
Pendant la semaine d’ouverture, un jury décernera le Prix Découverte Louis Roederer qui récompense un·e artiste et la structure porteuse du projet à travers une acquisition d’un montant de 15 000 euros et le public décernera le Prix du Public à travers une acquisition d’un montant de 5 000 euros.

The American Council of Learned Societies (ACLS) announces the ninth year of an initiative supporting research and teaching in Buddhist studies, funded by The Robert H. N. Ho Family Foundation. In cooperation with the Foundation, ACLS offers an integrated set of fellowship and grant competitions supporting work that will expand the understanding and interpretation of Buddhist thought in scholarship and society, strengthen international networks of Buddhist studies, and increase the visibility of innovative currents in those studies.
The Foundation offers five competitions to support teaching and basic research in the humanities and related social sciences.

We welcome two types of proposals. One from contributors who have studied women art dealers in Asia, Africa, and South America, as well as in the Middle East and Eastern and Central Europe and another one that highlight women gallerists who have focused their practice on women artists and traditional marginalized groups, such as African American, First Nations and Indigenous artists as well as Outsider Artists. This session hopes to illuminate how through their selection of artists or from the geographical space they operated from, these women gallerists brought to the center art that is now considered key to today’s contemporary art market.

The Society for East Asian Archaeology (SEAA) is pleased to announce that the Ninth SEAA Worldwide Conference will be held in Daegu, South Korea. The conference will be hosted by Professor Sungjoo Lee at Kyungpook National University (KNU).
The conference offers an opportunity for researchers to present the results of their work on any of a broad range of topics relating to East Asian archaeology. We look forward to receiving proposals for presentations, posters or short films as individual proposals or in organized sessions. Contributions in all aspects of archaeology in relation to the East Asia and adjacent regions are invited. Examples of possible topics include, but are not limited to, archaeological scientific approaches to East Asian topics, theoretical themes that crosscut geographical boundaries, and papers or posters that focus on a particular site, region, or culture. We also encourage submissions focused on adjacent regions such as Southeast Asia, the Pacific, and North and Central Asia.

À quoi pensez-vous lorsque vous entendez «Corée du Nord»? – Une équipe de film du Musée Alpin Suisse a parcouru la région montagneuse de la péninsule coréenne durant la brève période de dégel (2018/19) du pays. L’équipe a accompagné des groupes de randonneurs au sommet des montagnes, observé des artistes au travail, visité des exploitations agricoles dans la province vallonnée et a séjourné dans la plus grande station de ski de Corée du Nord.
Les petites séquences filmées racontent un quotidien qui n’apparaît dans aucun journal télévisé. Quarante entretiens donnent l’occasion à des femmes et des hommes de faire entendre des voix qui risquent de disparaître dans le système politique et les représentations que nous en faisons. Certaines rencontres sont spontanées, d’autres arrangées – elles nous touchent et nous incitent à nous interroger sur la signification de ce que l’on nous montre, si l’on cherche à comprendre ce qui se cache derrière les images. L’exposition est accompagnée d’un magazine qui approfondit la réflexion sur les images du film et leur contexte.

Exposition : Minhwa « Chaekgeori… de la beauté des livres »

Peinture populaire coréenne d’autrefois réinterprétée par 47 artistes d’aujourd’hui
« Beaucoup pensent que la nature morte est exclusive à la peinture occidentale. Toutefois, ce genre pictural était également populaire sous la dynastie Joseon en Corée, avec, entre autres thématiques, celle du livre. Diverses natures mortes ont été dépeintes dans de nombreux pays à travers le monde, mais celles représentant des livres comptent parmi les plus rares.
En Corée, le mot « livre » (chaek) est présent dans le nom de chaekgeori, style de nature morte représentant des ouvrages et divers objets liés à l’écriture, sous forme d’objets en porcelaine, en bronze, de papeterie ou d’autres objets courants, harmonieusement associés à des éléments naturels tels que des fruits, des plantes, des animaux et tant d’autres. »
C’est par ces quelques mots d’introduction que s’ouvre la nouvelle exposition du Centre Culturel Coréen, « chaekgeori… de la beauté des livres ». Inédite en France, celle-ci s’inscrit au cœur du style minhwa. Faisant partie intégrante du patrimoine culturel de la Corée, celle-ci signifie « peinture populaire » et tire ses racines du quotidien des Coréens les plus modestes de la fin du 18e siècle à la première moitié du 20e siècle. Se jouant des différences de classes, la peinture minhwa a indéniablement gagné le pari d’être appréciée de tous, de la cour royale aux quartiers les plus pauvres. Ce style pictural continue de véhiculer la passion qui anime les artistes spécialisés, encore très nombreux aujourd’hui.
Haute en couleurs et volontiers réhaussée d’une bonne dose d’humour, la peinture minhwa se compose le plus souvent de représentations florales et animales – le plus souvent tigres, pies, pivoines et lotus – mais aussi humaines et symboliques. Cet art populaire comprend le chaekgeori ou chaekgado, peintures sur paravent représentant des livres et accessoires divers utilisés par les lettrés de la Corée d’autrefois. Particulièrement apprécié du roi Jeongjo (22e roi de Corée ayant régné durant le 18e siècle), le style chaekgado a ensuite traversé les classes sociales pour devenir un genre très prisé par les gens du peuple. Ainsi, en se popularisant, livres et objets de calligraphie ont laissé la place à des peintures mettant en avant la faune et la flore, sujets davantage aimés des classes plus modestes de la société coréenne d’antan. Vieux de plusieurs siècles, l’art du chaekgeori ou chaekgado a su rester à la fois authentique et moderne. De nouveaux objets et des thématiques plus récentes ont été ajoutés au fil de l’histoire, permettant ainsi au genre de rester de tous temps proche de son époque.
