Carlitos, the last boat built in Arenys

The scooner Carlitos was the last ship built at the shipyards of Arenys de Mar at the beginning of the 20th century and stranded on the beach of the town. It was quite an event in the late fall of 1918. The last shipyard in operation at that time was the one belonging to Dotras, who was the person who led and make the latter ship, mainly of two masts.

The distinguishing features of the ships in Arenys de Mar were:

1.- Their solidity, since they were made of good wood. They lasted about 50 years, which is a strong evidence of this. Now, even though the weight, they had slender lines, with good finishes and rich ornaments.

2.- At the bow: the piece that forms the spur and the part that allows to fix the downhaul, among others. At the stern: the characteristic fan, semicircular, elongated and slightly draped at the ends.

3.- The low tonnage -about 164 tonnes-, although they had come to build ships of all kinks.

Alba wins the Classic boats Panerai Trophy 2013

The 10th edition of the Copa del Rey of Classic and Vintage Boats Panerai Trophy has just finished in Mahon. For two days, the bestshaped vintage and classic yachts have duelled in Menorcan waters. The last race, reserved for Saturday 31st, was suspended as a consequence of the strong North wind, with an intensity of up to 30 knots and waves of two and a half meters, very hard conditions for boats of this category.

Alba (1956), owned by Damián Ribas, commodore of the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona, was the fastest classic boat (built between 1950 and 1975), getting the first and second positions.

The Copa del Rey of Classic and Vintage Boats Panerai Trophy closed its 10th edition with an amazing sporting success and fully consolidated as one of the reference events of the classic sail Mediterranean calendar. The organization has been able to gather, from August 27th to the 31st, fifty vessels built between 1903 and 1975 coming from 12 countries. This regatta enjoys a very significant popularity among ship owners and sailors, and it is one of the most crowded races in the calendar. The island’s waters and weather, they explain, meet the ideal characteristics for sailing. All this adds up to the beauty of the Mahon natural port, which turns port entrances into a stunning show.

Launched in 2003 by the Club Marítimo de Mahón (CMM) and the Real Club Náutico de Barcelona (RCNB), the Copa del Rey de Barcos de Época -- Vela Clásica Menorca has, over its seven years, attracted hundreds of "Ladies of the Sea" with their owners and crews to the enchanting Balearic island, whose natural harbour has been one of the most strategic in the whole of the western Mediterranean since antiquity. The variety of winds, the crystal clear waters and the breathtaking scenery together with the classic and vintage boats that flock in great numbers to the island to take part in the Spanish stage of the Panerai Classic Yachts Challenge, a part of the Mediterranean Circuit, turn this event into an unforgettable spectacle.

Launched in 1956, the Alba is a Yawl designed by Philip Rhodes in his study in New York. It was moved to Germany with a freighter to keep on its construction in Abeking & Rasmussen, the prestigious shipyards frequented by the Americans during the post war years, when the medium size regatta yachts became on fashion, n 1978 the yacht became property of a Swiss man who sailed mainly by the Mediterranean. Until 1989 when Ugo Baravalle, a ship collector who even had his own shipyard; became its owner and restored the modifications that the Alba’s suffered during its last 22 years of navigation.

In 2000 was purchased by a Spanish man residing in Monaco. Finally in 2003 Damián Ribas became its actual owner.

Comet's refurbishing

The refurbishing of the boat named Comet has been carried out in keeping with the original aesthetics. All the elements have been maintained, restored and reproduced (where there is no alternative) in keeping with classic aesthetics and original materials. The restoration was intended to preserve the original details adapted to current needs.

She is a Sparkman & Stephens yawl designed and builded in the mid 1940s

The vessel has been in the Mediterranean Sea since 2004.

II Classic Trophy at the Arenys de Mar Yacht Club

This trophy will be held on Saturday April 9 at the Arenys de Mar Yacht Club with the participation of ships from the age of 31 December 1949 and classic boats, launched between January 1, 1950 and 31 December 1980.

The race will take place in waters between Barcelona and Arenys de Mar.
