Over BioBTX

Press Release – BioBTX Zeopore – EN – 8 January 2026_v02

]]>By converting plastic waste and biomass into renewable aromatics, BioBTX is spearheading the
creation of a circular chemical industry, significantly reducing carbon emissions and reliance on fossil
fuels. Aromatics, essential for producing every-day products like insulating foams, coatings, PET
bottles, batteries, and pharmaceuticals, will now have a sustainable alternative to fossil-based
sources, presenting a major opportunity for circular business models.
The presented study explores a novel valorization pathway for PAH-rich aromatic oil, by transforming
them into battery-grade graphite and sustainable aviation fuel. The research was performed together
with North Carolina State University, the National Renewable Energy Laboratory (NREL), Birla Carbon
and BioBTX. Through the upcycling of the PAH-fraction into products for high value applications, not
only the circularity level of the plastic waste and biomass recycling increases, also the strategic
dependence of graphite can be decreased.
Ton Vries, CEO of BioBTX, says: “We are excited about this novel production process and additional
use of the aromatics. This not only increases the overall application of our aromatic oil, but can also
significantly contribute to achieving a circular economy. We are looking forward to explore the next
steps for realizing a circular graphite value chain.
By converting plastic waste and biomass into renewable aromatics, BioBTX is spearheading the creation of a circular chemical industry, significantly reducing carbon emissions and reliance on fossil fuels. Aromatics, essential for producing every-day products like insulating foams, coatings, PET bottles, batteries, and pharmaceuticals, will now have a sustainable alternative to fossil-based sources, presenting a major opportunity for circular business models.
As a leading technology developer since 2012, Groningen-based BioBTX aims to scale up its revolutionary technology at the PETRA Circular Chemicals Plant in Delfzijl. The PETRA plant will convert 20,000 tons of mixed plastic waste annually into renewable aromatics, replacing fossil resources and recycling low-value plastic waste into high-value chemicals. Once production is proven, the company intends to roll out the technology to chemical industry customers world-wide.
The € 80 million investment round includes € 42 million in equity from new shareholders Invest-NL, Infinity Recycling, and Covestro, alongside existing shareholders Carduso Capital, NOM and Groninger Groeifonds, and others. Additional funding comprises of € 15 million in debt financing from the Polestar Capital Circular Debt Fund and € 4 million from the Province of Groningen, a € 14 million grant from the Dutch Government via RVO, and other subsidies. Invest-NL’s investment is partly backed by InvestEU, a European Commission program that supports initiatives aligned with EU policy priorities.
Securing such an amount with new partners mentioned above is impressive, looking at the current investment climate, and highlights the confidence in BioBTX’s innovative approach.
Ton Vries, CEO of BioBTX, says: “We are extremely proud welcoming this unique consortium of investors and finance providers. A milestone like this is only achieved when parties come together to contribute to a greater goal. This funding is a crucial step in creating a sustainable pathway for the chemical industry – and we are excited to take the lead from Groningen.”

BioBTX, seen as a pioneer in circular technology development, is proud to announce that together with
the Technische Universiteit Eindhoven (TU/e), the Rijksuniversiteit Groningen (RUG) and with the help of
ASQA Subsidies, they received a subsidy of €2.8 million from the Just Transition Fund (JTF) for the
implementation and execution of their project, titled: “Production of Renewable and Biobased BTX and
Other Sustainable Chemicals from Combined Organic and Circular Inputs.” This grant will be used to
develop the next stage of the BioBTX technology, to convert mixtures of biomass and plastic waste into
valuable drop-in chemicals. The JTF recognizes BioBTX’s potential to drive innovation in sustainable
practices, contributing to Europe’s transition to a climate-neutral future.
The project focuses on the possibilities of developing new technology that allows for the processing of
varying input streams of both biomass and plastic waste streams in different compositions and ratios into
BTX and other high-value chemicals. Together with the research groups of Professor H.J. Heeres of the
University of Groningen, Professor J. A. M. Kuipers and Dr.ir. K.A. Buist of the University of Eindhoven,
this unique project will make it possible for BioBTX and its partners to set the next steps in the
development and improvement of the BioBTX ICCP technology, both operationally and fundamentally.
The project aligns with the vision of the Ministries of Economic Affairs and Climate (EZK) and Social
Affairs and Employment (SZW), as well as the support of municipalities in the Groningen region.
Together, they aim to accelerate the energy transition, create a resilient labor market, and promote
sustainable practices.
“We are very pleased to be one of the first recipients of the Just Transition Fund grant, which is a
significant milestone in our mission to develop state-of-the-art technology for renewable chemicals. This
will enable us to contribute actively to the circular economy and make strides in reducing waste while
creating sustainable employment opportunities,” stated Cor Kamminga, CEO at BioBTX.
Making circular chemistry possible
Beckers is working in collaboration with BioBTX and the research institute Symeres to create a supply
chain for sustainable aromatic monomers made from plastic waste. BioBTX has developed a method
for turning waste plastic into BTX (benzene, toluene and xylene) which Symeres then take and oxidise
the xylenes into aromatic phthalic monomers which Beckers can use to create resins.
Phthalic anhydride is very important for polyester resin production as it is the most commonly used
aromatic acid and makes up 40-50 percent of the resins in which it is present. The phthalic anhydride
produced by this route can be used as a drop in for existing phthalic anhydride produced from
petroleum.
The pilot involves processing mixed plastic waste into sustainable chemical building blocks and finally
high-value products, using multiple advanced sustainable chemical conversions. This includes the
unique Integrated Cascading Catalytic Pyrolysis (ICCP) technology to convert mixed waste plastics and
biomass into aromatics such as benzene, toluene and xylenes. Beckers is particularly interested in
xylenes, which can be oxidised to produce monomers, such as phthalic anhydride, to be used in
polyester resins for coatings.
A world-first circular resin
“Nobody has ever created a coil coating containing phthalic anhydride made from plastic waste, so this
world first is an important step forward in terms of producing more sustainable resins and paints,” says
Julien Marquiant, Resin Lab Manager at Beckers. “It really is a game changer for us and our ability to
incorporate high-quality materials made from plastic waste.”
Ton Vries, Managing Director at BioBTX: “In order to reach a fully circular economy, we will need to
make use of all different types of carbon resources to substitute for all the fossil resources used
nowadays. The collaboration with Beckers proves that circular solutions can already be realised if
parties from different industries join forces. In this case it does not only prevent the plastic waste from
growing, it also simultaneously substitutes the need for fossil-based resources.”
The pilot is still being developed but can have significant sustainability benefits. Besides upcycling
thousands of tonnes of waste plastic into high-value products, early estimates suggest that the process
has the potential to reduce a white coating carbon emissions by at least 10 percent using such recycled
material compared with virgin raw materials. Beckers will validate the quality and suitability of the
phthalic anhydride produced by Symeres using the BioBTX xylene. Symeres is actively looking for a
potential partner to develop and license this technology over the next 3-5 years.
The full press release can be accessed here.
]]>Multilayer packaging materials are challenging to recycle using traditional methods, such as mechanical recycling, because they consist, as their name suggests, of multiple stacked layers of plastic with different properties. These layers are difficult to separate, therefore a recycling strategy that is able to handle mixed plastics is required. Here the BioBTX technology, ICCP (Integrated Cascading Catalytic Pyrolysis) comes in.
With ICCP we are able to recycle mixed waste plastic into the platform chemicals benzene, toluene, and xylene. During our collaboration with Solvay Italy, we successfully showed that the BioBTX technology can be applied to multilayered materials containing PVDC without compromising the BTX yield! We published these positive results in the Scientific journal of “Sustainable Chemistry for the Environment”. You can (open) access the paper via this link!
