Galiano Island harnesses iNaturalist to detect historical changes in the local bumble bee community

Three bumble bee species have disappeared from Galiano Island, where they have not been seen since 1990: the Western Bumble Bee (Bombus occidentalis), the Indiscriminate Cuckoo Bumble Bee (Bombus insularis), and Suckley’s Cuckoo Bumble Bee (Bombus suckleyi).

The Yellow-faced Bumble Bee (Bombus vosnesenskii) is a new arrival on Galiano Island, having largely replaced the Western Bumble Bee in parts of its former range.

We recently conducted a systematic survey targeting bumble bees, and, combined with data from the community science platform iNaturalist, we’ve found strong evidence documenting historical change in this island community. Our results are reported in the paper “Evidence of bumble bee extirpation and colonization: Galiano Island, British Columbia, Canada” published in the journal Northwest Science, available open access through Research Gate.

Baseline data are rare for many insect groups, making population analysis difficult. As a result, important pollinator species may undergo dramatic declines unnoticed. The emergence of community science platforms such as iNaturalist holds promise to address this challenge, as a novel approach to tracking biodiversity change. In this paper, we present evidence for historical change in an island bumble bee community, documenting the probable extirpation of three bumble bee species and a recent colonization event. Data from both intensive sampling using blue vane traps and from iNaturalist observations converged on the same estimate of species richness in the present data community, which significantly differed from our estimate of richness in the historical community. These results demonstrate the potential for community science to aid in the detection of biodiversity change through a comparison of historical collections and crowd-sourced biodiversity data. Looking forward, where collections data are lacking, data from iNaturalist may provide the baselines we need to understand future change.

Jeannine Georgeson is Coast Salish and Sahtu Dene. Galiano Island has been her home for most of her life. When her son Austin became involved with Biodiversity Galiano, his learning reminded her of what she was taught by her grandparents growing up. She was intrigued by the complementary aspects of Indigenous knowledge and ecology. Through IMERSS, Jeannine leads several initiatives that weave biodiversity together with the cultural importance of place and species, preservation of knowledge for future generations, action against climate change, community engagement and participation, and transboundary connections. Jeannine lives with her partner Laurie and two of her three children, plus their cats Lilo and Stitch, Cronk the bearded dragon, Pug the Pug, some fish, as well as Austin’s collection of ants and a couple of spiders.

Toward a Flora and Fauna of Galiano Island

Our community is formalizing the results of the last century and a half of biodiversity research on Galiano Island, BC, with a series of taxonomic data papers summarizing the island’s flora and fauna. The first instalment in this series was published in the Biodiversity Data Journal in 2022, demonstrating the potential for community science to contribute to the global biodiversity research community.  Today our work continues, as we review records for over 4,000 species, across most major phylogenetic branches of the tree of life. As we progress in this initiative, we are at once advancing an inclusive, open-source framework supporting community-based biodiversity research and monitoring in the Salish Sea.

Galiano Island is part of the San Juan Archipelago, which spans the Canada-USA border in the rain shadow of the Olympic Mountains and Vancouver Island Ranges. This sheltered subregion of the Salish Sea has a Mediterranean-type climate that supports some of Canada’s most imperilled ecosystems, including the highest density of threatened species in British Columbia. The need to foster more meaningful expressions of community-based biodiversity research is especially important in regions such as the Salish Sea, where high biodiversity meets the threat of growing human populations and development. Evidence suggests that more coordinated approaches to biodiversity research, which strengthen connections between professionals and non-professionals, can help to mobilize significant amounts of biodiversity data at a time of critical need. Through this work, we aim to set an example for a localized biodiversity monitoring effort that can be adapted to the bioregional scale, encouraging a paradigm shift towards more inclusive biodiversity research practices.

This initiative has enlisted a multidisciplinary, cross-cultural, and transboundary community of practice, including more than 30 taxonomic specialists in a review of the island dataset.

Spring 2017 Bee Survey Preliminary Results

In the spring of 2017, with the support of melittologist Lincoln Best, Galiano community members participated in a coordinated effort to document the bees of Galiano Island.

Our surveys took place during the months of April through to July and yielded a total of 628 bee specimens, representing 8 different genera, from 8 different localities. These include mining bees (Andrena spp.), bumblebees (Bombus spp.), long-horned bees (Eucera spp.), mason bees (Osmia spp.), cuckoo bees (Nomada spp.), sweat bees (Halictus & Lasioglossum spp.) and blood bees (Sphecodes spp.). Sampling was conducted with pan traps at roughly 3-day intervals, during periods of (mostly) blue skies and sunshine.

These findings have added to the record of Galiano Island’s known bee diversity, which now numbers at 82 species of bees and sphecoid wasps belonging to the Apoidea. Forty-six of these species are new to the project since the Biodiversity Galiano Island project first began in January 2016. The remainder were documented by S.G. Cannings, J. Heron, L. Parkinson, and G.G.E. Scudder, with records going back to 1973. Our knowledge of the island’s bee fauna has doubled since the Biodiversity Galiano project began in 2016!

The specimens collected in 2017 are still being identified. Yet so far eighteen species have been added new to the list for Galiano Island thanks to this community-based sampling effort. Kudos to Ed Andrusiak, Karen Harris, Michael Hoebel, and Rob and Mary Greenwood for their participation in this survey. Special thanks go out to Lincoln Best, and to Mark Webber, who provided lab space for processing specimens. As a legacy of this project, our community can look forward to a reference collection being prepared by Lincoln Best. Meanwhile, the following list provides a summary of the species identified to date, along with the names of those who helped find them. Check out the gallery on the right for photographs of some of the documented species.

Dana Ayotte is an artist, designer and activist who is grateful to live as a settler on the unceded, traditional territory of the Musqueam, Squamish and Tsleil-Waututh First Nations also known as Vancouver, BC. She is a Senior Designer at the Inclusive Design Research Centre at OCAD University (Toronto, ON), where she works to make digital technology more inclusive and accessible to all. Her art practice utilizes printmaking and pattern design as a means to question power and privilege from a feminist perspective and to try to find meaning in an increasingly chaotic world. She holds a Masters in Mechanical Engineering (MIT), a BSc in Engineering (Queen’s University) and a Studio Art Diploma (Capilano University). Dana recently spent a year living on Galiano Island and feels a heartfelt connection to this magical place.

Andrew’s workshop will focus on illustrating and learning about various phyla of marine worms, and will take place on February 22nd, at the Yellowhouse Art Centre, from 1-4pm.

1. When and how did you become involved in art?

I’ve been drawing and creating for as far back as I can remember, but I think my big push into becoming “an artist” was probably when I was in Ontario, playing in bands in the early 2000’s. I had been creating logos, promo designs and album covers for my own bands and branched off into doing work for others that we played with or knew in the scene. I also started selling prints of my drawings at shows, before branching off into painting and graphic design. A few years later I decided to attend the Ontario College of Art & Design, majoring in Drawing & Painting, with minors in Art History and Material Arts.

2. What mediums do you usually like to work in?

My paintings are all done in acrylics, which I often accent with markers and aerosols, and my drawings are often a combination of graphite, ballpoint pen and conte chalk. I sometimes like to throw in found objects like seashells, encyclopedia pages and other ephemera and I employ Adobe Photoshop both for graphic work and digital preliminaries of concepts.

3. As an artist, what do you draw inspiration from?

That’s a pretty broad scope. My own experiences and interests often come in play through metaphor or reinterpretation. Some influences that I draw elements from when creating include wildlife, surrealism, Art Nouveau, science-fiction, the supernatural, history, music and wordplay.

4. Can you talk a bit about the EnVision Gallery?

EnVision Gallery was initially opened 20 years ago by a co-op of Mayne Island artists, who each promoted their own work through it. In the years since, it had been mostly run by Darrell Perfumo of West Coast Gnomes, who made contact with a plethora of other artists from around BC, ranging from pottery, jewellery, paintings, photography, woodwork, textiles and more. My partner Kat Ferneyhough and I both have extensive backgrounds in all manner of artistic mediums and purchased the gallery from Darrell 5 years ago when the demands of his own work started to really take precedent (every artist’s dream). We continued with several of the artists who already had work featured there, have taken on 30 new artists since taking over, and are always keeping an eye out for new talent. We currently showcase the works of 75 BC artists, focusing mostly on Mayne and the Southern Gulf Islands. We enthusiastically took it upon ourselves to support artistic efforts within the community and have been involved in the Southern Gulf Islands Arts Council, the Mayne Island Fall Fair, the Chamber of Commerce and Festival Active Pass in different capacities to name a few. Two years ago, we started curating and hanging work at the Springwater Lodge, with rotating shows every two months, either focusing on 1-2 local artists at a time or themed group exhibitions, which have been received very positively on Mayne.

5. When did you come to the Gulf Islands?

I had been visiting Mayne for about 15 years before making the move out here. My partner’s mother, Jen O’Shaughnessy had moved out several years prior and ran the Dragonfly Gallery Art Supplies store and we had come to visit several times and absolutely fell in love with it. I grew up in Southern Ontario and for a brief period, the United Arab Emirates, and had involved mostly in working screen-printing jobs, attending college, and playing in bands before making the move; still think it was the best decision.

6. What about the Gulf Islands has drawn you to staying here?

There is a wonderful, kind & welcoming community here and it’s a fantastic place to be an artist. We don’t have to ever go far to be out and about in nature and surrounded by beauty. Personally, I like the pace as well, it’s fairly quiet and laid back and doesn’t have the energy of living in a city. The island has been very accommodating and I’ve been able to skirt the line of making art that people here seem to appreciate while also being a little out there. Now that we have EnVision Gallery, I’m here for the long haul.

7. I am very interested by your surrealist art depicting animals. Can you talk a bit about those paintings and your ideas around those?

Surrealism has always been my favourite form of expression, as it takes something familiar and explores the possibilities of what it could be, either by concept, shape or a desire to draw on the bizarre. I’ve employed several works which involve animals whose heads have been replaced by human hands, underlying the connection our touch has had on the ecosystems we all rely on to survive. I’m fascinated by the breadth and diversity of animal life on the planet and find there’s an endless well of new creatures and concepts to explore. While not all of my work dealing with surrealist takes on wildlife, it certainly is a theme I keep coming back to.

8. What about the workshop are you looking forward to?

I’m looking forward to meeting new artists and like minded people who appreciate natural beauty and form and want to spend some time exploring its intricacies. Even though the islands are fairly well-connected I still don’t get over to our neighbours often enough and it’s nice to have the opportunity to spend some time making art with others who are equally enthusiastic about it.

Like many people on the Gulf Islands, Susan Taylor came from the city in search of a quiet, simple place in which to create. “I had planned to stay for only a few months,” she tells me. “That was in 1997; Pender Island became my home.”

Two years after this transition, Susan and her partner Frank Ducote opened up The Blood Star Gallery and brought their love of art to the Pender Island community. The gallery is named for Susan’s favourite intertidal creature, the seldom seen Pacific Blood Sea Star. Which is fitting, because Susan’s art tends to focus on the seldom seen aspects of life. In close-up paintings of fruits, vegetables, sea shells, creatures, and microscopic life, Susan explores a realm of art inspired by the flora and fauna of the Salish Sea and beyond.

“My art has always been a close look at nature,” she tells me, and this interest of hers is especially captured in the paintings she has done of marine plankton, two of which she has submitted to the Web of Life art project.

Plankton are small, often microscopic organisms found inhabiting bodies of marine and fresh water. They include members of multiple kingdoms and phyla, including diatoms, protozoans, small crustaceans, and the eggs and larval stages of other animals.

“In 2019, I read the following: every second breath we take is thanks to plankton. I was immediately captivated and needed to learn more. After some initial research, I discovered what an alternative universe this microscopic world truly is! The infinite variety of shapes and forms of these organisms is a virtual gold mine for me as an artist.”

In her series The Importance of Plankton, Susan has depicted various plankton in acrylic paints on wood panels. Painted against a black background, the plankton are numerous and have a rather jewel-like quality to them, which wonderfully captures the magic of plankton’s sheer variety of shapes and sizes. Not only are they an endless source of inspiration for Susan (in one of her painting’s descriptions, Susan points out that there are estimated to be one million types of plankton in the world’s oceans), she also has a very important reason for depicting these little organisms:

“So much of the focus of environmentalism on the Gulf Islands is about protecting the resident orcas, the salmon and now, even herring. The knowledge I now have of the importance of plankton as the base of the ocean’s food chain has inspired me to contribute to the awareness of how integral it is to all life in the oceans and to humans as well.”

Susan’s art certainly draws attention to these overlooked, critical components of our Salish Sea ecosystems and we are very excited to have her work on board the Web of Life project! Because plankton include multiple groups of life, including plants and animals, her painting has assumed a place at the very heart of our interactive data visualization: representing life itself!

Emily is a PhD candidate in the Department of Zoology at the University of British Columbia, Vancouver, in the labs of Dr. Mary O’Connor and Dr. Laura Parfrey. Her research focuses on temporal and spatial variation of eelgrass (Zostera marina) communities and how climate change and other human activities affect important ecosystem functions.

Emily first became involved in the Biodiversity Galiano project during the 2019 BioBlitz and has since taken on a leadership role helping to expand the marine horizons of the project. She has contributed numerous marine observations through her underwater photography, adding the polychaete Platynereis bicanaliculata new to the list in 2019. Her contributions also include a rigorous review of the crustaceans historically reported for Galiano Island—a natural extension of her research focus on the marine invertebrates at home in eelgrass communities.

During her free time, Emily enjoys exploring the great outdoors. Hiking, backpacking, climbing, and photography are a few favourite hobbies. If she had to pick a marine species as her avatar, she would probably go with the hooded nudibranch (Melibe leonina)—that lover of eelgrass!

In this workshop, participants wove together science and art in a study of jellyfish, anemones, comb jellies and sponges.

The workshop began with an introduction by Roksan Kohen-Parfitt, and moved into Andrew Simon’s presentation, in which he introduced participants to the Web of Life project and dived into a study of the phyla Porifera, Cnidaria and Ctenophora. Then, we dove into the art! With Roksan advising those who had art-related questions and encouraging artists as they created their work, we had a meditative and fun time bringing these phyla to life on paper.
