Loot Crate

If you love Bungie’s Destiny, then this one is most definitely for you. Loot Crate is prepping a fresh offering box for November that’s actually pretty packed. And this sounds like some cool stuff too.

Inside of the box, you’ll find:

• an exclusive Tower Hoodie
• an exclusive European Dead Zone Glass
• an exclusive Cosmodrome Dopp Bag

But that’s just the beginning, as LC also says that there’s more inside. Just what that might be is still under wraps, though LC does add that it also will be exclusive to the Crate. So you won’t find anything that’s include elsewhere.

The company also adds that this is going to be a pretty limited offering. There’s no ‘edition number’ or anything, but Loot Crate says it will be “extremely limited and will sell out fast”. So take that for what it is.

The Crates are priced in at $49.99 USD, and ship quarterly. Interestingly, there are a few bonus items too. If you buy just one (and not the subscription), you’ll actually get an “exclusive emblem and bonus in-game content”. Buy a whole year, and you’ll get an exclusive bonus item as well. Presumably those are different items, though there’s no description either way in the press release.

It’s your Destiny

Eight years ago Bungie struck out on their own, leaving the Halo franchise to Microsoft and 343 Industries. It was a gamble that saw them fall in with one of the biggest publishers in gaming – Activision.

Their first project was a game that looked an awful lot like Halo, though differed significantly in the details. Destiny was received pretty well by players, who took to the new multiplatform and multiplayer series well.

Now two Destiny releases in, several expansions deep, and in the middle of what was a 10 year deal, the developer has decided its finished. Not all together mind you, just with Activision.

We don’t really know what actually led to this decision, but nevertheless the deal is done. Activision and Bungie are divorcing, and shockingly the latter company is hanging onto Destiny as a brand. Actually, maybe it’s not that shocking.

Though Destiny sold well, the latest expansion (Forsaken) didn’t sell well enough to meet Activision’s expectations. So perhaps the publishing house wasn’t all that keen on hanging onto it.

What does the future hold?

While the reasons for the split are unclear, both companies seem to be handling the breakup well, publicly wishing each other well. Activision has also announced that Blizzard.net will still be the online home for Destiny 2, at least for the foreseeable future.

Again though, any future Destiny games (or expansions presumably) will be published directly by Bungie. Also, the direction that the series takes now is totally up to them. Will there be new exclusivity agreements? A shift to single player? An arena shooter? Where their baby goes now is all up to Bungie.

Maximum detail

For a good long time now, McFarlane has mainly made its rep on the level of detail that they included in their figures. Articulation has been sadly something that they haven’t really concerned themselves with. It does seem, from some of the recent announcements, that they’re stepping that game up a bit.

That’s great to see, since McFarlane hasn’t always been this way. The 90s version of the company, which focused on Spawn, used to have both great detailing and articulation. So here’s to that, I hope it’s a trend that continues for the company.

Another thing that they’ve gotten very into lately, are licenses. Video games have provided a plethora of new opportunities for McFarlane, including some monster licenses. Call of Duty, Borderlands, Destiny and more were all on hand for the Con.

As you can see in the above gallery, there were some non-gaming properties included in McFarlane’s booth too. Star Trek, Attack on Titan and others rounded out the collection of figures alongside Stranger Things. McFarlane has bought into the Netflix show in a big way, with a continuing series all its own.

You gotta love sports

Of course, NBA and Madden offerings were plentiful as well. Two of McFarlane’s newest additions to it’s formerly “Sports Picks” series, the pair of sports figure series’ now have that tertiary level of licensing.

Don’t deal with the devil

Then there was Cuphead. There wasn’t a whole lot to see featuring the side-scrolling video game, but there was a sampling of mini-figures. Basically, just enough to see that these are going to be some pretty neat sets.

Toys and games

We already told you about one big new property at McFarlane with Call of Duty. Click here for that story. But to briefly fill you in, Ghost and Soap from Call of Duty: Modern Warfare are heading to plastic. That’s not even remotely the only property that the company is showing off at Toy Fair 2018 however.

McFarlane has a number of them at the convention, from gaming, television, and of course sports. Pretty much everything below is in the 6 – 7″ scale, and comes with 12 points of articulation. Yes, I know that’s not a ton these days, but it kind of is when you’re talking McFarlane.

Let’s break it down with some very nice official imagery from the company.

We Happy Few

Not yet officially released, We Happy Few is a sorta-horror game that’s been in pre-release “trial” mode for a while. We’ve previewed it here, and it’s so far looking solid. It’s also got a very interesting, trippy 1960s aesthetic. McFarlane isn’t doing a whole line or series based on the game, but they are doing a bobby (cop), one of the enemies you’ll face.

The bobby that you see here includes a nightstick, “masked face” head and alternate gas mask head. Look for him this spring.

Stranger Things

A bit of a Netflix phenomenon, Stranger Things has been a runaway hit. The 1980s-flavored horror show just completed its second season and seems to be a lock for season 3. Not to mention action figures, which is just what McFarlane has on tap. These are also some pretty awesome looking toys.

I especially have to mention that Demogorgon, which is 10″ tall and looks just so freaking great. It’s also the only one that’s boxed, as the rest are carded. How cool is that?

Star Trek

The venerable Star Trek franchise makes its debut at McFarlane with a pair of characters that you no doubt know. Captains Kirk and Picard kick things off for the fresh line, which will include staple Trek accessories like phasers and phaser rifles.

There’s also a replica phaser from the new Star Trek Discovery show, which looks pretty cool and includes lights and sounds.

Destiny

Activision and Bungie’s FPS series Destiny has fast become one of the biggest lines of figures and role-play items at McFarlane. It seems to be a hit with fans too, as it’s spawned a second series of figures. This new set includes heavy-hitters from Destiny 2 like Zavala and actor Nathan Fillion’s Cayde-6. Neat stuff.

Borderlands

Gearbox’ FPS lootfest is getting the full treatment from McFarlane, with a few really cool renditions of classic characters. Kreig, Zero, Lilith, Claptrap, Tiny Tina, and -yes- Handsome Jack are all included in this first wave, and they all look really neat.

As cool as these look, they’re not all of the more traditional scaled figures from McFarlane. The company also has a number of additional lines ready to go for 2018, including The Walking Dead, Attack on Titan, and more. Have a peek at the best of the rest in the gallery below.

Building sets return

In addition to the above, McFarlane is also continuing its building set series’ whcih has grown to include some impressive IPs. Gone are the days of The Walking Dead and Game of Thrones. Those licenses have given way to Rick and Morty, Stephen Universe, Hello Neighbor (yes, really), and South Park. Oh, and of course, Five Nights at Freddy’s is still very much in the mix too.

Bungie and Activision have released a free trial of Destiny 2 on this day of Now. 28. The free trial is available on PlayStation 4, Windows PC (via Battle.net) and Xbox One.

Destiny 2’s free trial includes campaign missions which are available on two of the five locations you can explore. First is the European Dead Zone (EDZ) on Earth where players have access to the Farm social space as well. Second is the moon of Saturn, Titan a space consumed by hive and the dark blue oceans that submerged mankind’s monuments.

While players have access to those two full worlds, they will also have the ability to join in PvP multiplayer but restricted to only the Crucible Quickplay Playlist.

Players will also have access to joining clans and earning experience from their chosen clan. With all this time and experience growth players will have a cap when they reach level 7, plus their progress will carry over to the full game if they purchase it.

Bungie did release a similar trial version for the original Destiny a few months after that game launched, but they included a secret to an exotic gun which would be eventually known as the ‘Necrochasm.’ I would keep an eye open.

“What drives a Warlock to madness,” mentioned in Destiny’s Grimoire card (Osiris). “I watched as you grew tired of strike missions and the grueling, unproductive sessions with the Cryptarchs. How much had been fabricated by their Ghost? Osiris might seem crazy, but he almost feels like us, “the player.”

Seasons and the Future of Destiny Content

With armor, weapons, and other gear to earn (Ie. Ships, Ghost, etc.) Bungie will be providing constant updates within what they call “seasons.”

Taken from a Kotaku article (Bungie Explains How Destiny 2 ‘Seasons’ Will Work):

We are currently in season one of the four seasons that are happing this year of Destiny 2, meaning that Destiny 2 resets its yearly calendar in September.

Seasons will also reset your Clan progress, so everyone starts from zero. Currently, must of the more prominent clan groups are hanging around at rank six for a while now. Clan’s will be getting better loot as the seasons go on; If you do not have a clan now make your own here.

As the Seasons change from fall to winter and so forth Bungie will be dropping more substantial tweaks to the overall game. That usually relates to weapon balance and expansions like the “Curse of Osiris.” Think more significant changes to the overall meta but also smaller changes coming during the seasons as needed.

With these new seasons, they are also adding ornaments which are new to Destiny 2 but not Destiny. In the original Destiny, they would go on armor and make them pop, glow, or just otherwise look better than its original armor. How to get these ornaments is different though, you’ll have to complete a challenge the gear itself to unlock them.

Weapons will also change form season to season. Some weopnes will be kinetic and some weapons will be energy but then they will switch one season. For intense if the new monarchy is selling a gun and its kinetic this seasons, it’s possible that next season it will be energy.

Microtransactions (aka Bright Engrams) will be refreshed between seasons. Bungie said they’d be changing “most of the content” in the Bright Engrams such as emotes, ships, and sparrows while more shaders will be added but they are not taking any away from season to season.

October gaming

Augment is the word of the month, and there’s plenty of properties in this Loot Crate that that applies to. The recently released Prey reboot, Borderlands, and Destiny all feature upgradable characters. I can’t help but be a little disappointed though, that this isn’t a horror crate.

It’s October, and that means Halloween, as well as horror. This is usually the month that everything out there has a spooky theme, but now so here. And I think, unless I’m mistaken, that there already was an “augment” crate at one point too, so… yeah.

Nevertheless, this is a Loot Gaming installment labeled Augment. So let’s dig in.

Don’t fight your way through Prey thirsty

Prey isn’t the first thing I’d be thinking of when imagining a water bottle, but I actually like this a lot. Number one, because I actually use water bottles quite a bit, but also because it looks neat and I dig Prey overall. Not that I’m crazy about the reboot, but it’s cool to have something (anything) “Prey”. It’s BPA-free too, which is nice. I always prefer my water to not be poisoned.

I could also easily picture this on board the game’s space station. Just be careful. As Loot Gaming points out on the poster included in the box, if you see two of these next to each other, one might be a Mimic.

The bot who launched Destiny 2, Cayde-6

Okay so, full honesty here, I don’t know if Cayde-6 is a robot. I don’t really like Destiny at all, and all I really know about “him” is that he’s voiced by Nathan Fillion. Well, that and that he was in the jokey reveal trailer for Destiny 2.

For that matter, I’m not a Borderlands fan either (man this crate really wasn’t for me). I do have to say though, this pin/patch set from Gearbox’ series is actually kind of rad. I’m also digging the pin of the month, which bears a Destiny design.

More Destiny (yay)

Well, still not a fan, but this Destiny tee is also pretty cool. Man, is there a lot of “Destiny” in this crate or is it me?

And a poster to round it all out

The included poster this month features… Destiny 2. Yow, that is a load and a half of Destiny. As usual, on the flip side of the image, you’ll find all of the descriptions of what was in the box. I’ve actually found this handy at times, since not every property is obvious, especially if you’re not an existing fan.

All in all though, this just was not my month in Loot Gaming. I don’t count myself a fan of any of the included properties (unless you count Prey). I will admit though, that everything is well done, typical for an LC pack. And I really do like the tee and the water bottle quite a bit, if just for their imagery.

Plasticized Destiny

Known for their licensed properties and attention to detail, McFarlane is a bit of a legend in the toy biz. The company originally combined detail with posability to create some of the best figures out there back in the 90s. Since then, they’ve become more of a “collector” company, producing semi-posable statuettes.

But that all changes with Destiny.

Not only do these figures look awesome, but they’re nicely posable as well. Each Guardian included in this opening wave sports 14 points of articulation, and also includes a Destiny display base, so you can get ’em looking pretty much however you like.

It’s a solid assortment too, with 7 figures in total appearing in the first volley. The majority of these are exclusives (4 of them) though, so you’ll have to do a little hunting if you want all of them. Not unlike searching for loot in the game itself I guess.

Past those, there’s also a jumbo-sized fig in the form of Lord Saladin (10″ tall), and a role-play “weapon”. A replica of the devastating Gjallarhorn is on the way, and will be exclusive to GameStop stores.

The Iron Gjallarhorn is 44″ long, and plays an assortment of sounds form the game. “Aiming, target lock, firing, rocket detonation and residual “Wolfpack Rounds” are all activated via the trigger. The Gjallarhorn will run you $149.99 USD, and will be available this Holiday. You can pre-order one here.

If, however, you don’t really want to buy one, you can always try to win a Gjallarhorn for yourself.

Innundation

If August kicks it off, then September has always been the first solid month of what is an annual deluge of big games for the Holiday Season. And true, it’s technically still the third quarter, but the biggest of these are titles that are expected to sell well into the all-important end-of-year. And some of what’s coming this month is absolutely massive.

Check this out: Destiny 2, Dishonored, Forza, Metroid, Marvel vs Capcom, Cuphead… and Knack 2 (for some reason). Those are just a few of the more hotly anticipated titles on the way over the next 30. There’s a little something for pretty much everybody too, including some console-exclusive stuff and NBA, NHL, and Soccer titles.

So let’s not waste too much time and dig right in.
