Munster Technological University (MTU) has launched a new Master of Engineering in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering, developed in response to growing demand across Ireland’s manufacturing sector for advanced engineering skills in sustainable manufacturing, industrial automation, artificial intelligence, data engineering and Industry 4.0 technologies. 

The new Level 9 programme marks a significant milestone as the first taught Master’s programme in engineering to be delivered from the MTU Kerry Campus. 

Designed in collaboration with industry partners, the part-time programme will support engineering professionals to develop the technical, research and leadership capabilities needed to lead digital and sustainable transformation within modern manufacturing environments. 

The launch comes at a time of continued pressure on Ireland’s engineering talent pipeline. According to Engineers Ireland, Ireland will require an additional 22,300 engineers to meet future economic and industry needs. Engineers Ireland’s Barometer Report 2025 also found that 53% of employers identified a shortage of graduate engineers as a major recruitment challenge, rising to 79% for experienced engineers, with 90% expecting skills shortages to remain the same or worsen in the coming years. 

Delivered over five semesters through a flexible blended learning format, the MEng in Integrated Manufacturing Engineering combines online delivery, immersive masterclasses and applied workplace learning. A key feature of the programme is a substantial industry-aligned research project, enabling learners to address real-world challenges within their own organisations while continuing to work.

The programme has been developed by MTU’s Rethinking Engineering Education in Ireland (REEdI) team, following consultation with industry partner companies across manufacturing sectors including MedTech, Pharma, Food, Electronics, Automotive and Engineering Services. This consultation identified strong demand for expertise in sustainable manufacturing, digitalisation, automation, artificial intelligence and Industry 4.0 technologies, with employers highlighting the need for advanced engineering skills to support the twin green and digital transitions shaping the sector.

“Ireland’s manufacturing sector is evolving rapidly, and employers are seeking engineers who can combine deep technical expertise with the ability to lead research, innovation, digitalisation and sustainable change within their organisations. This new Master’s programme was developed in direct response to those needs, providing a flexible pathway for engineering professionals to advance their skills while remaining connected to the workplace.”

The Intelligent Mechatronics and RFID (IMaR) Research Centre at Munster Technological University (MTU) has been awarded €1.5 million in funding under the highly competitive Enterprise Ireland Capital Equipment Call to establish a cutting-edge Adaptive Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing Cell.

This significant investment will enable IMaR to develop a state-of-the-art manufacturing platform that integrates advanced automation, digitalisation, and sustainable production methodologies. The new facility is designed to support Irish industry in enhancing productivity, improving resource efficiency, and accelerating the transition to low-carbon manufacturing systems.

The Adaptive Sustainable Advanced Manufacturing Cell will combine robotics, smart sensing, AI-driven decision-making, and real-time data analytics to create a flexible and responsive production environment. This will allow companies to rapidly adapt to changing market demands while minimising waste, energy consumption, and environmental impact.

Speaking on the announcement, Professor Joseph Walsh, Vice Dean of Research and Innovation in the Faculty of Engineering at MTU, said:

Rethinking Engineering Education in Ireland (REEdI), a project developed by Munster Technological University (MTU) in partnership with University of Limerick (UL), has been awarded the national Disciplinary Excellence in Learning, Teaching and Assessment (DELTA) Award by the Higher Education Authority (HEA).

The award recognises the project’s leadership in transforming engineering education and advancing innovative approaches to teaching, learning and assessment. MTU received the award at the National Leaning Impact Awards at a ceremony on Thursday, 26th March in the Ashling Hotel Dublin.

Funded by the Higher Education Authority under Human Capital Initiative (HCI) Pillar 3, REEdI brings together higher education institutions and industry partners to co-design modern engineering curricula that better reflect the needs of employers and the future of engineering practice.

The project addresses the ongoing national challenge of ensuring a strong pipeline of engineering graduates with the capabilities required to support Ireland’s innovation-driven economy.

A key output of the REEdI project is the flagship Bachelor of Engineering in Mechanical and Manufacturing Engineering with additional programmes being offered and developed in partnership with industry. These include new courses in renewable wind energy, a Master of Engineering programme and micro-credentials in the areas of Integrated Manufacturing Engineering, and Polymer 3D printing, among others.

Commenting on the award, Dr Fiona Boyle, Director of REEdI and Head of Department – STEM at MTU Kerry Campus, said: “Employers require access to engineering graduates with the right blend of practical, technical and professional skills to ensure that talent does not become a barrier to growth for their businesses. Product development to monitor and manage cattle methane emissions

Groundbreaking Technology

AgriData Analytics, a company founded in Daingean, Co. Offaly, is dedicated to revolutionising agricultural engineering by creating innovative solutions to monitor and manage methane emissions from cattle. To support their goal of developing cutting-edge machines that accurately measure methane production, they partnered with IMaR Technology Gateway to help develop their product and automate the capture and recording process.

The initial project saw IMaR identify best-in-class product capabilities for measurement of greenhouse gas emissions from livestock, in terms of both what is measured and the accuracy of the measurement. These capabilities were then prioritised as actions for consideration for product integration.

The next stage, again supported by an Enterprise Ireland Innovation Voucher, was concerned with control of the measurement cycle. The cow tag, used for electronic identification by way of an RFID tag, initiates the cycle, triggers feed release and starts the air intake to capture the cow’s breath output. The read sensor obtains methane level measurements and stores these measurements for later analysis.

Product Development

Through a directly funded project element, IMaR produced an optimum design for a unit to house the electronics and sensors, accommodate cow approach and feed release, and funnel air to the methane sensors. The resultant design was shared by way of CAD drawings, simplifying production of the housing.

The system captures multiple readings per cow visit. A cow can visit the machine several times per day, and multiple cows have access to the system, generating significant volumes of data. To understand average readings per cow, herd averages and comparisons between animals, detailed analysis is required.

Working with the IMaR Technology Gateway and MTU has been a hugely valuable part of the development journey for AgriData Analytics and our Bovine Breathalyser system. From the outset, the team at MTU brought strong technical expertise, practical problem-solving and a collaborative mindset to the project. Their support in areas such as RFID integration, 3D product design and backend software development was instrumental in transforming our concept into a functional, field-ready technology. The ability to combine engineering design with software development under one roof significantly accelerated our progress.

The IMaR Technology Gateway provided an ideal bridge between academic expertise and commercial application. The structured approach, access to specialist facilities and clear focus on real-world outcomes allowed us to de-risk critical stages of development and bring an innovative product closer to market.This collaboration has played a key role in advancing our mission to deliver accurate, scalable methane measurement technology for ruminant livestock, supporting both environmental sustainability and data-driven farming. Overview:

The IMaR Research Centre at Munster Technological University invites applications for a number of fully funded postgraduate Masters and PhD scholarships aligned with strategic research priorities in advanced engineering, digital innovation, skills provision and societal impact. IMaR is a dynamic, industry-engaged research centre comprising 50+ researchers and staff, delivering over 441 industry projects with more than €20million in total collaborative research funding awarded in recent years. The centre has secured over €7.1million in industry collaborative research projects and produced 85+ peer-reviewed research publications. Working at the intersection of research excellence and enterprise collaboration, IMaR provides postgraduate researchers with a highly applied and impactful research environment.

The scholarships available provide opportunities for motivated graduates to undertake applied research within a collaborative environment that connects academia, industry, education, policy makers, regionally and nationally. Research activity at IMaR is strongly industry-connected, with collaborations spanning advanced manufacturing, AgriTech, MedTech, automotive, general manufacturing, pharmaceuticals, electronics and automation. Industry partners include organizations such as Tricel, Liebherr, Dairymaster, Stryker, Johnson and Johnson, Alps, EPS,

Successful applicants will join interdisciplinary teams working across engineering, manufacturing, AgriTech, intelligent systems, industrial automation, and public engagement, helping to shape how emerging technologies are designed, developed, adopted, and understood.

IMaR Thematic Research areas included in this programme:

Post-graduate researchers will contribute to one of several thematic research areas within the IMaR Research Centre:

1. Engineering and Public Engagement (EPE) – Exploring how the public engages with STEM and engineering research, examining communication strategies, participation models, and the societal understanding of innovation.

2. Intelligent Skills Mapping and Trustworthy AI Systems – developing rule-based and AI-enabled approaches to skills recognition, progression pathways, and value creation for individuals, enterprises, training providers, regions and policy makers.

3. Automation and Integration of Industrial Machines – supporting the research, design and deployment of advanced automation solutions linked to new equipment investments, enhancing productivity, integration, and smart manufacturing capability.

4. Vision Systems for Agriculture – applying sensing, imaging, and intelligent analysis technologies to support innovation in agricultural processes, sustainability, and data-driven decision-making.

5. Engineering Education – exploring the potential of immersive technologies such as Virtual Reality (VR), Augmented Reality (AR), and Mixed Reality (MR) to transform engineering education by creating interactive, experiential learning environments that replicate real-world engineering scenarios. Immersive platforms can enable students to visualise complex systems, conduct simulated experiments, and engage in practical problem-solving without the constraints of physical laboratories. The project will also examine how Artificial Intelligence (AI) tools can complement these technologies by providing adaptive learning pathways, intelligent tutoring, automated feedback, and data-driven insights into student performance. By integrating immersive environments with AI-supported analytics and personalised learning systems, engineering programmes may enhance student engagement, improve conceptual understanding, and increase access to high-quality laboratory experiences. The study will evaluate the pedagogical benefits, implementation challenges, and cost-effectiveness of such integrated digital learning ecosystems for the future of engineering education.

Whilst projects will differ in technical focus, all scholarships share a common aim: to advance impactful research that supports industry transformation, regional skills development, and broader societal benefit, including alignment with UN Sustainable Development Goals.

Researchers will undertake structured postgraduate study embedded within IMaR’s applied research environment, gaining experience in interdisciplinary collaboration, innovation translation, and industry engagement.

Innovative Irish company Squadron Six Aerospace is an Irish company focused on developing drone swarm and immersive control solutions for Search and Rescue (SAR) operations. IMaR Technology Gateway, through the Enterprise Ireland Innovation Voucher programme, supported Squadron Six Aerospace on four vouchers over six years, in its development work.

From originally implementing an off-the-shelf flight controller system to developing mesh and encrypted mesh for communication, our latest work enables the use of vision over optic fibre.

Innovation Process

For video streaming and to make drones safer in the presence of flammable gas and immune to electromagnetic interference and connectivity issues, Squadron Six identified fibre-optic communication between a drone and its ground station as a research topic. IMaR identified and tested a detailed method of achieving fibre-optic communication from a modern drone control module (a flight controller) to a ground station computer. This is also useful for “first person view (FPV)” low-latency live transmission, immersive drone control.

The Squadron Six Aerospace & IMAR Technology Gateway partnership

IMaR has provided four detailed state-of-the-art reports to Squadron Six Aerospace as the basis for custom drone development. The evolution was from off-the-shelf flight control systems, through mesh communication configuration strategies and kernel building methods, to encrypted mesh and alternative build mechanisms. The fourth voucher provided detailed information on how to achieve communication to a drone over a fibre-optic cable. Weekly meetings and joint archived chat records provided continuous knowledge transfer over the duration of each project.

Innovative Irish company

Agri IoT Ltd, an Irish company specialising in rumen monitoring solutions through their Moonsyst brand, collaborated with the IMaR Technology Gateway at Munster Technological University (MTU) to advance its electronic bolus technology. This partnership, supported by an Enterprise Ireland Innovation Partnership Programme (IPP) grant (IP/2023/1039E), was focused on developing cutting-edge capabilities for real-time monitoring of rumination and eructation in cattle.

Project Development

As part of the project, the IMaR team utilised bolus accelerometer data to create a novel algorithm designed to identify key patterns in cattle’s rumination behaviour. As rumination is a critical indicator of animal health, welfare and productivity, its accurate real-time monitoring enables farmers to detect early signs of illness or stress, optimise feeding strategies, and improve overall herd management.

In parallel, the project also established the feasibility of detecting eructation (belching) events, which serve as key indicators of methane emissions. The study developed a roadmap for the continued refinement and integration of methane monitoring into Agri IoT’s existing bolus technology.

Project outputs

The project findings were published in the Journal of Agriculture under the title “Advancements in Real-Time Monitoring of Enteric Methane Emissions from Ruminants”, and shared at the European Association for Animal Production (EEAP) conference in Florence, Italy. The project was also recognised for its impact, earning a nomination for the “Best Environmental Research Project/Programme” category at the FBD Better Farming Awards.

Professor Joseph Walsh, Head of the School of STEM and Director of the IMaR Research Centre at Munster Technological University (MTU), Tralee and Co-Principal Investigator at Lero, the Science Foundation Ireland Research Centre for Software, has been awarded the prestigious Lero Director’s Prize for Innovation at the sixth annual Lero’s Director’s Prizes. Established in 2005, Lero aims to position Ireland as a global leader in high-quality software research and development.

The award ceremony, hosted on December 11th at the University of Limerick recognises academic excellence across Ireland. Professor Joseph Walsh was recognised for his contributions to intelligent mechatronics, robotics, and bio-instrumentation, which has secured more than €20 million in research funding over the past five years. Since receiving the funding, Professor Walsh has published more than 200 scientific papers which has resulted in numerous industry collaborations and intellectual property agreements with prominent companies like Dairymaster, McHales, and Tricel.

The Lero Awards were presented to nine top academics and researchers from leading Irish universities and institutes of technology. The Lero Director’s Prizes are presented annually to exceptional Lero members from the Lero 12 partner universities and institutes of technology, recognizing their outstanding work and achievements throughout the year.

Commenting on the Lero Director’s Prize for Innovation, Professor Joseph Walsh, said: “I’m honoured to receive the Lero’s Director’s Prize for Innovation. This award reflects the hard work and dedication poured in by my research team and collaborators at MTU over the last five years. Together, we strive to push the boundaries of intelligent systems and develop technologies that make a tangible difference in society.”

Congratulating the winner, Lero Director, Lionel Briand, emphasizing  the importance of their contributions to the field of software research, stated, “The Lero Director’s Prizes highlight the dedication and excellence of our  members in advancing software engineering, information systems, and human-computer interaction across various cutting-edge areas.”
