Muskoxen were reintroduced to the North Slope in 1969 and 1970. The population has expanded and declined over time. The current population estimate is 220 muskoxen which is below the management objective but there is still a harvestable surplus of bull muskox available for this limited registration hunt. There are three hunt opportunities for muskoxen in 26B; TX108, DX112, and RX110 but this Advisory Announcement is only in reference to RX110.

Valdez Crowns Halibut, Silver Salmon Derby Champions

Over the course of the summer, close to 30 weekly winners took home prizes in the Valdez Halibut Derby and more than 40 anglers took home daily Silver Salmon Derby prizes. Valdez Fish Derbies also awarded two anglers $500 for “Big Prize Friday”, awarded Halibut Hullabaloo tournament winner Shane Miller of Fairbanks $1,000, gave away cash and prizes to 12 winners in the Valdez Kids Pink Salmon Derby and crowned Tiffany Wells the Queen of the Silver Salmon Sisterhood during the Valdez Women’s Silver Salmon Derby.

The harvest quota will be determined by fall composition surveys and announced by advisory announcement prior to the season. To participate, hunters must be Alaska residents, possess a valid Alaska state hunting license and a state registration permit (RC504) available at the King Salmon ADF&G office beginning November 17 and in person in Igiugig, Kokhanok, and Levelock on designated days. The bag limit is two caribou; hunters must obtain two RC504 permits in order to harvest two caribou.

"This isn't how the law is supposed to work, the Board’s action falls well outside what ANILCA allows," said Jeremiah Williams SCI Alaska Chapter board president. "Congress gave the Secretaries, not federal staff, and not a board acting by email, narrow, specific authority to close federal lands, and only when it's necessary to conserve wildlife or protect a genuine subsistence need. That standard was not met in this case, and Alaska hunters will pay the price.”

Two bull moose were reported taken as of September 3 from a population of approximately 70 animals and hunters remain in the field. To maintain appropriate bull:cow ratios and to stay within the overall population objective for Unit 14C, the Department has determined harvest should not exceed three bulls.

ADFG Announces Closures For Two Unit 22 Moose Hunts

The Alaska Board of Game established a moose registration permit hunt in Unit 22D within the Kuzitrin River drainage and Unit 22D Southwest which is administered with a quota to prevent overharvest. The fall harvest quota of 27 bulls is expected to be met by the season closing date announced in this emergency order and no further harvest is warranted.

Seward Lagoon Youth-Only Coho Fishery Will Be Open Through October 5

“The Seward Lagoon is stocked each year with coho salmon to create additional sport fishing opportunities in Resurrection Bay,” stated Assistant Area Management Biologist Donald Arthur. “Since the lagoon is a terminal stocking location with little natural reproduction and is not generally used to collect hatchery broodstock, these fish are intended to provide harvest opportunity. Coho are just starting to show up in good numbers, so extending the youth-only fishery through October 5 gives young anglers more time to enjoy this unique opportunity. We encourage families to get out and take advantage of the late-season coho.”
