We’re delighted to announce that we’ve just been named as the Dealer of the Year at Hörmann UK’s 2024 Partner Standard Awards.
Having won in three categories in 2022 (Best RollMatic T Installation, Best Social Media Presence and Best Dealer Finder Page), we added two further successes in 2023 with our Best Customer Service victory and another Best Dealer Finder Page win. The main prize, however, had eluded us until now. After being runners-up for the past couple of years, we’re thrilled that it’s a case of third time lucky!
Put simply, the Dealer of the Year is awarded to that year’s best all-round ambassador of the Hörmann brand. The eight-person judging panel were tasked with finding the company that provided great customer service, possessed excellent knowledge and ensured all their fitters were fully trained to install the full product range.
It’s hugely validating to everyone here at ABi that we’ve been judged to meet this criteria, and it’s an honour to pick up such a prestigious accolade. The values that represent Hörmann are the exact same values that are important to us, so to receive the recognition from them specifically means a lot to the entire team.
As a result of the win, we’ve been gifted with a trip to Alton Towers and hospitality at next year’s Cheltenham Festival. We’re looking forward to celebrating with our dedicated staff, who we’d like to thank for their tireless hard work.
Last but not least, we’d also like to thank all our customers for placing their trust in us. As we get ready for 2025, we’ll continue to put your satisfaction right at the heart of our organisation.

]]>
Sectional and up and over garage doors use springs to balance the door when opening and closing. Some roller doors use a spring, but it is solely for the safety mechanism. Side hinged, side sliding, and overlap doors do not use springs.
Understanding which type of spring is used on what type of door is not a straightforward task. In the UK, most garages are not built to a standard size, resulting in few garages using standard garage door sizes.
Useful tip: With that in mind, if you are currently considering building a garage, it’s worth speaking with a garage door expert to allow the garage to be built to accommodate a standard-sized garage door, as it will help keep the cost down.
The type of springs used on your garage door is determined by the brand, door type, and door weight, which, in turn, depends on the material used and the size of the door. Each garage door brand uses its own type of spring mechanism to allow the door to be opened and closed.
With this in mind, the type of door (e.g., Hormann up and over garage door) will have a completely different opening and closing spring mechanism than another type (e.g., Henderson up and over garage door).
We must also understand that there are currently two types of up and over garage door gear: canopy and retractable.
Canopy doors have a long spring across the top of the door (standing inside of the garage and looking out), while retractable doors have springs located on the left and right sides of the door.
Once we have determined the brand (e.g., Hormann), the type of door (up and over), and the door gear (retractable), we now understand that it is a Hormann up and over retractable garage door.
Now that we have this information, we can identify the spring required. Most brands will either have an engraved number on the spring or on the spring bracket to identify it. For example, Hormann up and over retractable doors use a multi-cluster spring down the sides of the door and have an engraved number on the spring bracket, such as 001, 002, or 003, depending on the weight, size, and material of the door.
Canopy door springs don’t usually have a spring identification number; they’re based on the size of the door. The label on the back of the door should state the door size along with the brand information. You can then contact a local dealer with this information, and they will be able to contact the manufacturer and find out which spring is required for that sized door.
Please note: Not all brands will have a spring identification number located on the spring. There should be a label on the back of your door with information regarding the door type. If it does not list the springs on the label, the only way to work out which spring you require is by taking a photo of the label and sending it to the manufacturer or a local dealer, and they will be able to confirm the spring required for the door.
In certain scenarios, if the door is very old or a discontinued brand, that information may not be available on the door. Sometimes the spring may be painted in a color to identify it (e.g., Henderson uses a green spring for its double up and over retractable door).
In the worst case scenario, if no information is present, you can measure the length over coils, count the number of coils, as well as measure the spring diameter and wire diameter to work out which spring you require.
Need help? We regularly identify springs for customers. If you gather all the information you can and contact us, we will be more than happy to help in any way we can. We also have a dedicated spares website selling garage door springs.
Sectional garage door gear can be mounted to the front, side, or rear of the door. The front and rear mounted springs usually consist of two torsion springs on a single shaft bar. The side springs are located on the left and right sides of your door. Again, these can be identified using the same methods as mentioned above, through a spring identification number tag on the spring or the label on the back of the door.
You can identify the left or right handed spring by standing inside the garage and looking out. Although not an exact science as some older models of sectional garage doors had the left and right handed springs mounted in the opposite way. Usually the spring tag identifier will have L or R on the spring plate, in other cases the spring numbers might be listed on the manufacturer label on the back of the door. That’s why photo’s are always best practice.
Most brands that are discounted offer replacement pattern springs.
However, not all brands have pattern springs available. For example, Wayne Dalton springs may not be available in the UK, but they can be imported from the USA. Nevertheless, considering the cost of shipping and labor involved in replacing the spring, it may not be economically viable.
In general, retractable springs are easier to replace than canopy springs, as you may need to replace the entire shaft and assembly for a canopy spring, while only the spring or spring arm needs replacement for a retractable door.
If your garage door is old and in poor condition, it’s worth considering buying a new garage door.
You have the option to purchase a new door gear with springs. In this case, the original gear would need to be stripped from the door and replaced with the new one. However, this procedure can be quite expensive and might end up costing a similar amount to buying a new garage door, depending on what’s involved.
When in doubt, it’s best to contact a local garage door specialist to carry out the required work. We offer a garage door repair service accross Yorkshire if you need expert help and advice.

When it comes to selecting the perfect entrance doors for your home, there are numerous options available in the market. Each type of door has its own set of features and benefits, designed to enhance the security, aesthetics, and functionality of your property. In this article, we will delve into the differences between various entrance door types, including aluminium entrance doors, Hörmann steel entrance doors, composite doors, timber doors, and UPVC doors. Let’s unlock the world of front doors, back doors, and side doors to help you make an informed decision.
UPVC (unplasticized polyvinyl chloride) doors have become increasingly popular among homeowners for their affordability, low maintenance, energy efficiency, and versatility. These doors are constructed using a rigid plastic material that offers a range of benefits and advantages.
One of the primary advantages of UPVC doors is their cost-effectiveness. Compared to other door materials such as timber or composite, UPVC doors are generally more affordable, making them an attractive option for budget-conscious homeowners. The lower cost of the door does not compromise their quality or performance, as they still provide excellent functionality and durability.
They’re highly resistant to weather conditions, including rain, wind, and UV exposure. Unlike timber doors that may warp, rot, or require regular painting, the doors are designed to withstand the elements without deteriorating. They are resistant to fading, cracking, and peeling, ensuring that the doors maintain their appearance over time with minimal maintenance.
Another significant advantage of UPVC doors is their low maintenance requirements. Unlike timber doors that may require regular staining or varnishing, the doors simply need occasional cleaning with a mild detergent and water to keep them looking fresh and clean. The smooth, non-porous surface of the door makes them resistant to stains and easy to wipe down, saving homeowners time and effort in upkeep.
Energy efficiency is a crucial consideration for many homeowners, and UPVC doors excel in this area. These doors offer excellent thermal insulation, helping to reduce heat loss and improve energy efficiency in the home. the frames can be fitted with insulation materials and multiple chambers to enhance their thermal performance. By minimizing heat transfer, UPVC doors contribute to maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature and potentially lowering heating and cooling costs.
They come in a wide range of styles, designs, and finishes to suit various architectural preferences. Whether you prefer a traditional, contemporary, or minimalist look, there are door options available to match your desired aesthetic. Additionally, they can be customised with different glazing options, panel designs, and hardware to create a personalised entrance that complements your home’s overall design theme.
In summary, UPVC doors offer an affordable, low-maintenance, energy-efficient, and versatile option for homeowners. With their resistance to weather conditions, ease of maintenance, thermal insulation properties, and design options, the doors provide a practical and attractive entrance solution for those seeking a cost-effective and hassle-free door material. Whether you’re looking to enhance security, save on energy costs, or add a stylish touch to your home, UPVC doors are a reliable choice.
Timber doors have long been cherished for their timeless beauty, natural warmth, and classic appeal. These doors are crafted from various types of wood, such as oak, mahogany, pine, or walnut, and offer a range of benefits that make them a popular choice among homeowners.
One of the most notable advantages of timber doors is their aesthetic appeal. The natural grain patterns, rich colours, and warmth of wood create a sense of elegance and charm that can enhance the overall character of any home. Timber doors have a unique ability to blend seamlessly with both traditional and contemporary architectural styles, adding a touch of sophistication to the entrance.
In addition to their visual appeal, the doors provide excellent insulation properties. Wood is a natural insulator, which helps to minimize heat transfer and maintain a comfortable indoor temperature. Timber doors can contribute to energy efficiency by reducing heat loss during colder months and limiting heat gain in warmer seasons. This insulation benefit can potentially result in lower energy costs and a reduced environmental impact.
Durability is another significant advantage of timber doors, especially when constructed from high-quality hardwoods. Well-maintained wooden doors have the potential to withstand the test of time, maintaining their structural integrity and beauty for decades. It is important to note that regular maintenance, such as staining or varnishing, is typically required to protect timber doors from weathering and to preserve their appearance.
Wooden doors offer versatility in terms of customisation. They can be crafted to suit various architectural styles, with options for different panel designs, glazing choices, and decorative elements. Homeowners have the flexibility to choose a design that complements their home’s aesthetics and reflects their personal taste. Additionally, timber doors can be stained or painted in a wide range of colours to match or contrast with the surrounding decor.

Wood has natural sound-dampening properties, which can help reduce noise transmission between rooms and from the outside environment. This is particularly beneficial for homeowners seeking a quieter and more peaceful living space.
When selecting timber doors, it is important to choose high-quality materials and consider professional installation. Proper installation ensures a precise fit, proper sealing, and optimal performance of the door. Regular maintenance, including periodic staining or varnishing, will help protect the timber from moisture, pests, and other potential damage.
In summary, the doors offer a combination of timeless beauty, insulation properties, durability, customisation options, and acoustic benefits. Their natural appeal, warmth, and versatility make them a popular choice for homeowners looking to add a touch of elegance and character to their home’s entrance. Whether you prefer a classic or contemporary style, timber doors can create a welcoming and visually pleasing focal point that enhances the overall aesthetic of your property.
Composite doors have gained immense popularity in recent years as a versatile and practical choice for front. back and side doors. These doors are engineered using a combination of materials, typically including a solid timber core, glass-reinforced plastic (GRP) skin, and insulating foam. The unique composition of composite doors offers a range of benefits that make them a popular option for homeowners.

The combination of materials used in their construction makes them highly resistant to weathering, warping, cracking, and fading. This durability ensures that composite doors maintain their appearance and functionality over time, even in harsh environmental conditions. By reducing heat transfer, these doors can contribute to maintaining a comfortable indoor temperature and potentially lower energy costs. Homeowners can benefit from improved thermal efficiency and a reduced carbon footprint.
Another notable advantage of the door is their low maintenance requirements. Unlike timber doors that may require regular sanding, painting, or staining, composite doors are designed to be virtually maintenance-free. The GRP skin is resistant to fading, and the doors can be easily cleaned with a mild detergent and water. Additionally, it is important to ensure that the glass used for side elements is of high quality and meets security standards to maintain the safety of your home.
In conclusion, glazing for doors is a design feature that adds beauty, natural light, and architectural interest to the entrance of a home. Bolton Gate manufactured the ‘Bolton Berry’ – a retractable up and over garage door and the ‘Bolton Georgian’ which was a nine panel Georgian style door also using retractable door gear. Bolton Gate also distributed the ‘Filuma’ sectional overhead door. The Filuma doors originated in Canada and the United States and from the early 1970’s to the late 1980’s were branded as ‘Bolton Filuma’ in the UK. There were two types of Filuma doors available. A translucent fibreglass model which was available in a range of tinted colours and a stipple finish aluminium model.

]]>Apex Garage Doors were manufactured up until 1998 and originally formed part of the Bolton Gate Company. During the late 1980’s the Bolton name was dropped and the full product range was marketed under the Apex brand name.
Apex continued to manufacture and distribute the original Bolton range under the new brand; this included the Apex Berry and Apex Georgian retractable garage doors and the Filuma range of sectional overhead doors, which were marketed as the Apex Filuma range.
Apex then introduced a canopy door gear option, using the more modern overhead torsion spring system, increasing the product range and appealing to popular market demand.
The Cardale Group took ownership of Apex Garage Doors in 1998 and proceeded to modify and expand the product range, combining their own door gear systems into the existing Apex products.
Parts and spares for the original Bolton Gate and Apex doors are quite hard to source; however, there are a number of universal parts such as locking bars, spring adjuster bolts, handles and locks that will fit. The later Cardale Apex doors use the same parts as the rest of the Cardale range which are readily available. For major part failures, there are also complete door gear kits available that will fit the original Apex doors, though with the fitting time involved, this is not always a cost effective solution.

]]>P C Henderson Ltd was a British company founded in 1921 by Percy C. Henderson. Initially manufacturing hay carriers and sliding door gear for the agricultural sector, they went on to develop their Dolphin and Merlin Steel range of garage doors in the 1950’s. Sales of these new steel garage doors proved to be very popular as the more traditional timber doors, which were the common type of garage door installed at the time, were becoming more and more expensive. Henderson went on to refine their designs and a large number of their garage doors were installed throughout the UK in the following years. Unfortunately, Henderson stopped manufacturing domestic garage doors in 2008 but a large number of their doors are still in operation. We are often called out to repair Henderson Garage doors which are over 20 years old, which is a testament to the quality of their product and Percy’s original vision.
Unfortunately Henderson no longer manufacture spare parts for garage doors but here at ABi we have sourced a number of suppliers that can manufacture and supply most of the replacement parts for Henderson garage doors going back to their early Dolphin and Merlin doors. We also recondition and keep parts we recover from old doors we replace. Henderson also manufactured a number of automation systems over the years and although a lot of the hand transmitters are now obsolete, we can supply some of the more recent transmitters or even replace the receiver on some of the older models which allows us to supply you with new compatible hand transmitters.
A well maintained garage door can often operate quite happily for well over 30 years. You may find that the odd roller or spring will need replacing but with a little attention and lubrication the mechanism should continue to operate safely and smoothly.
ABi Garage Door repairs have many years of experience repairing Henderson Garage Doors and with access to a full range of parts we can usually have an old Henderson garage door running like new in no time at all.
