Harley Quinn continues to be one of DC Comics’ most promoted characters. And even though there’s going to be a rumored break, her appearance in director James Gunn’s Suicide Squad movie was just the latest of the villain’s main-event roles.

Of course, she was once again portrayed by actress Margot Robbie, who’s likeness has pretty much become synonymous with the character. And speaking of, all of that figures (no pun intended) directly into Sideshow Toys’ latest announcement.

Sideshow’s newly announced Premium Format Figure features the former Joker moll, and cuts an impressive silhouette. She stands 21″ tall, 11.25″ wide, and 15″ deep, so she should make a nice statement piece for any DC collection.

Based on the likeness of actress Margot Robbie, this Premium Format Figure is expertly sculpted and hand-painted with astonishing attention to detail.

Harley stands confidently atop a unique display base covered in melting psychedelic text, flashing a beaming smile, with fellow Squad member Javelin’s trademark weapon resting on one shoulder.

Her stylish cinematic costume is recreated in its carefully coordinated black and red color scheme with matching accessories and makeup, from the manicure on her nails down to the red laces in her boots. Harley’s outfit includes motorcycle goggles, a cropped biker jacket with the phrase “Live Fast, Die Clown” emblazoned on the back, a buckled corset top, zippered pants, and combat boots.

Let’s hope it doesn’t get cancelled

If you’ve been following the news, then you know that the coronavirus pandemic has triggered the cancellation of… well, everything. That included massive shows like the SDCC and Power Con, and events like Free Comic Book Day 2020.

Even with the virus seemingly tapering off though, we’re hearing that there are worries about a potential resurgence in the autumn. Might that mean that conventions like NYCC could get canned as well? Yeah, you bet it does. And it also might mean the cancellation of Halloween Comicsfest, the fall’s big comic book store event. Heck it could mean the cancellation of even Halloween itself for that matter.

Right now though, we’re going to go with being slightly optimistic. And with that in mind the fall’s biggest comic shop event is taking on new significance. Diamond Select Toys has all but confirmed that with this week’s announcement, revealing a selection of items timed for the day.

A pair of Vinimates (vinyl figures) and an awesome looking Carnage statue will be shipping just for Comicsfest. Obviously, none of these will be freebies, but they’ll be in stores just in time for the big day.

Getting animated

We first got a look at Mondo’s third Batman: The Animated Series collector figure a while ago. Catwoman was announced as far back as a year ago (if I remember correctly), though now we have a much better idea of what the figure will include.

Much like Batman and Mister Freeze before her, Selena will stand in at the 12″ scale (she’s 11.5″) and features a ton of extras. Those include extra portraits, hands, and accessories.

She’s also super-posable with 30 points of articulation, and will have some bonuses if you order direct from Mondo. Their exclusive edition will have an alternate unmasked head sculpt, and a second version of Isis the cat.

The dead rise, and other things

There really wasn’t a ton of stuff on hand in the DC Comics booth at NYCC. The usual film costumes were there though, with suits from the upcoming Birds of Prey movie being highlighted. So if you were looking for snapshots, there was your chance. Along with them was an art gallery, as well as a promo for a DC Comics credit card.

As for the actual merchandise showcases, there were only a select few. Though I have to admit, even with a lack of real estate DC Collectibles managed to cram a decent amount of stuff into them. This amounted to some clothing accessories, and the items that you actually want to see – statues and action figures.

Batman Black & White

Believe it or not, the Batman Black & White mini-statue line issues its 100th statue soon, so DC had a bunch on hand to show off. The centennial entry in the set comes from Todd McFarlane, depicting his heavy-caped, brooding Dark Knight. As we told you a few weeks ago too, number 101 is another from Frank Miller.

That line has been joined by a Harley Quinn Black, White & Red line, which was on display as well. And in the same case we got a selection of Bombshells, Cover Girls, and a Designer Series statue from Alex Ross.

DC Essentials

Aside from the above, there were some cool DC Essentials figures on display as well. That includes a new DCeased sub-line. That wave kicks things off with four figures.

I call it a sub-line since it’s kind of it’s own thing, though they’re technically just a part of the Essentials series according to DC. That main line got a few more figures too by the way, including a really cool “Speed Force” Flash.

Comic-al

Funko Pop!s, you either love ’em, hate ’em, or “only collect the ones from the properties you like most and then think about selling all of them on eBay every few weeks”. Cough.

Bottom line though, is that these little vinyl figures are pretty much everywhere these days. And sales don’t seem to be slowing down any, as Funko keeps pumping out new ones at an alarming pace.

Harley Quinn herself here has a whole bunch of Pop! figures already to her credit, and now she’s getting one more. This one though, is a little special. Not only is it a Previews exclusive, so it’ll only appear in comic shops, but it’s also based on a comic cover.

Harley Quinn #1 in the DC Rebirth era is a subject, and as you can see the figure actually captures it really well. In place is the hard-rocking hand gesture, as well as the now-signature duds, and a classic boombox.

All in all, a neat little exclusive. Harley will be shipping out this coming August, but can be pre-ordered right now at your local comics shop. She’ll cost you the usual, $11.99 USD.

Clowning around

DC Collectibles has been a roll the last few years. While there have been some misses like the Icons line (which I nonetheless liked a lot), there have been many more hits. Right there with those are the continuously excellent statues that the company produces.

From higher end stuff to the more inexpensive offerings, the quality is almost always as high as it can get. I have a few of the Batman Black & Whites myself and they have a permanent place on my shelf.

As for what’s coming up to start 2019, it’s a lot of cool Harley Quinn stuff.  Not that that’s it, but Harl makes up the bulk of the four statues announced today. Also included though, is a cool Nightwing & Batgirl based on the art of Ryan Sook.

Villainous

As LEGO games go, this one’s a fair bit different. Well, sort of. DC’s LEGO offerings so far have consisted of Batman and other superheroes. So this could maybe be considered a mirror opposite. That’d be fitting. After all, many of the biggest rogues in DC’s universe are polar opposite to their respective heroes.

We get a good look at some of them in this trailer too. A-listers Joker, Harley, Reverse Flash, and Poison Ivy are all present. Then there’s that last guy – who is that guy?

The answer of course, is that he’s whoever you want him to be. LEGO DC Super-villains allows gamers to craft their own baddie.

“LEGO DC Super-Villains provides players a fun and humorous way to cause mischief by unleashing their DC Super-Villain’s sinister powers and amusing abilities,” said Tom Stone, Managing Director, TT Games. “With an unprecedented amount of customization options to choose from, players can create and customize their character at the start of the story, unlocking new powers and abilities as they progress through the funniest LEGO game to date.”

On the narrative end of things, DC Supervillains sets things up to make the villains into the heroes. Sort of.

In LEGO DC Super-Villains, the Justice League has disappeared, leaving Earth’s protection to a newcomer group of heroes from a parallel universe, proclaiming themselves as the ‘Justice Syndicate’. Renowned DC Super-Villains from the ‘Legion Of Doom’ discover Earth’s newest heroes may not be the heroes they claim to be. With each player’s completely customizable Super-Villain character in command, this team of misfit lawbreakers must join forces to discover and foil the evil plans the incognito strangers have in store.

At the beginning of the campaign, players can create their own unique villain and main character throughout, while also teaming up with a variety of DC Super-Villains throughout the story mode. As players progress, they will unlock new abilities, powers and can continue to customize their character to take on the evil threat. Friends and family can join story mode at any time with the fun, two-player, local co-op experiences where players can team up in epic boss fights.

Fans looking to pick this one up should also be on the lookout for a Deluxe Edition of the game. There you’ll find an included Season Pass, but that’s not all. Early access to the “DC Super-Villains: TV Series DLC Character Pack” is in the box too, and a packed-in, exclusive mini-figure. That’d be “Superman” Lex Luthor by the way, which I assume is Lex in his blue, red-caped battle armor.

Not to be left out are digital downloaders, as there’ll be a special Deluxe Edition for them as well. Sans physical content, that “pack” will include the Justice League Dark character pack.

All of the above lands on the Xbox One, PS4, Nintendo Switch, and PC on October the 16th.

Maximum weirdness

“Harley Quinn does and says the things we all wish we could get away with,” continues Humphries. “She’s the embodiment of wish fulfillment. Harley is a wild card, and she’s a survivor; two things we all want to be at different times of the day. And Apokolips is just the beginning of our plans for Harley. No one in the DCU will be safe from Harley Quinn.”

Well. That’s a frightening thought, as is the rest of this new story arc, kicking off in Harley Quinn #45. That’s the issue that sees Harley artist John Timms joined by new series writer Sam Humphries. And it sounds like it’s going to be a decidedly oddball adventure.

In the new arc, Harl is kidnapped by Darkseid’s Female Furies and brought before their mistress, Granny Goodness. Why? Because Granny wants her as her newest student, and in turn, she’ll help hunt down a Fury gone rogue.

See? It’s weird. Then again, this is Harley.

And, though we’re getting a “new” version of the character here, it sounds like we’ll be heading back to more of the Harley that fans dug so much in the first place.

“The biggest question, and the biggest challenge for Harley, is defining if she’s a hero or a villain,” says Humphries on his new assignment. “But why can’t she be both? Or is there a third choice to explore? My vision for the book is ‘What if Bugs Bunny were a chainsaw, hosting Anthony Bourdain’s show, but in the DC Universe?’ In our first three-issue story arc, John Timms and I are going to bring the crazy Kirby Krackle to HARLEY QUINN—focusing on the manic energy that made us cheer for her and the tragic emotions that made us fall in love with her.”

Honestly, the Harley stuff could prove to be tons of fun, but there’s another reason I’m pretty excited to hear about this one. That being, that there’s been an awful lot of New Gods stuff popping up in DC lately, and this book continues that trend. They were neglected for a while in the New 52 and post-Rebirth, so that’s a particularly cool thing to see. And with this new book set to run a major storyline with the Gods, it seems as though they’re not going anywhere, any time soon.

Harley Quinn #45 lands in stores on July the 4th.

Comic art

Pretty cool stuff, huh? And not only was Saulque on the DC stage there, but he’s actually got a line of vinyl figures coming soon from DC Collectibles. We showed you a few of these in our Toy Fair coverage of the company in February, but it’s worth talking about again.

The initial wave of these figures will be based on the work of Chris Uminga, but wave 2 is all Saulque. His work features his own “interpretations of Batman, The Joker and Harley Quinn”, and is some very cool, and very unique stuff.

They’ll be hitting right behind Uminga’s Batman, Superman, and Wonder Woman figures this coming September. Oh, and right behind Nooligan’s stuff is Sho Murase’s stunning trio of Catwoman, Poison Ivy and Harley Quinn. Those will come in standard and “holiday” variations. Awesome looking stuff all around.

Premium

For those not familiar, “premium format figure” is pretty much Sideshow’s way of saying “statue”. So no, these aren’t poseable – and they’re not toys in any way. What they are, are uber-detailed (and usually massive) replicas of your favorite heroes and villains.

And man, is Sideshow not playing around with this line. These are the heaviest of heavy-hitters when it comes to DC Comics. Don’t look for any details (at all) on these just yet though, as the company isn’t revealing anything right now – not even the full look at any of them.
