The US Department of Justice (DOJ) has won a temporary pause on an order requiring it to respond to Apple’s requests for documents from 14 federal agencies, reports 9to5Mac.

In July the DoJ asked a federal court to reconsider a recent ruling that would allow the tech giant to to seek documents from 14 separate government agencies in the antitrust case against the company. Earlier that month it was reported that Apple had won a discovery fight in their ongoing 2024 Department of Justice antitrust lawsuit, successfully blocking subpoenas they issued to 14 federal agencies—including the CIA, FBI, and NASA—that sought internal documents on how these agencies evaluate and purchase smartphones.

The subpoenas served to federal agencies were ruled overbroad and too burdensome, particularly because many requested documents involve classified or privileged material. 

Then the DOJ, backed by declarations from officials at several federal agencies and offices, asked Judge Jose Linares to reconsider that decision. Notably, neither the Commerce Department nor the FTC submitted a declaration.

In its motion, the DOJ argued that Linares applied the wrong legal standard by treating the agencies as parties to the case rather than non-parties entitled to greater protection from discovery.

n a decision issued earlier today, Linares granted the DOJ’s bid to pause the discovery order while District Judge Julien Neals considers the government’s appeal over whether it can be required to respond to Apple’s discovery requests for documents, notes 9to5Mac.

Apple has announced that developers can now download the Xcode 27 Release Candidate and submit apps and games built with the latest SDKs [software development kits] for approval for apps for the upcoming operating system updates. 

macOS 27 Golden Gate, iOS 27, iPadOS 27, tvOS 27, visionOS 27, and watchOS 27 will launch on Monday, September 14. Apple says that starting April 2027, apps and games uploaded to App Store Connect need to meet the following minimum requirements:

• iOS and iPadOS apps must be built with the iOS 27 & iPadOS 27 SDK or later
• tvOS apps must be built with the tvOS 27 SDK or later
• visionOS apps must be built with the visionOS 27 SDK or later
• watchOS apps must be built with the watchOS 27 SDK or later

“Last Seen,” a new Australian thriller starring Gotham Award winner Patrick Brammall, is now streaming on Apple TV.

Produced by 60Forty Films, the drama is adapted by writer and executive producer Kris Mrksa from CWA John Creasey Dagger Award-winning author Ryan David Jahn’s book, “The Dispatcher.” 

Emmy Award-nominated filmmaker Christian Schwochow directs and executive produces the series, which is entirely set and filmed in Victoria, Australia. “Last Seen” has debuted with two episodes, followed by a new episode every Wednesday until October 7.

Here’s how the series is described: Police detective Ian Ridley’s (Brammall) life fell apart 11 years ago when his young daughter, Maggie, disappeared without a trace. Now working as a police dispatcher, the only thing that has kept him going is his implacable refusal to accept that she might be gone forever. When he receives a distress call from a teenage girl he is certain is Maggie, he will stop at nothing to find her and reunite his broken family, whatever the cost.

According to NoteBookCheck, though Apple stopped short of specifying the exact node, Apple’s A20 Pro — introduced at yesterday’s “Surprise and Shine” event — has long been rumored to use TSMC’s base N2 process, while competing offerings such as Qualcomm’s Snapdragon 8 Elite Extreme Gen 6 and MediaTek’s Dimensity 9600 Pro are expected to adopt the more advanced N2P node.

As noted by TrendForce, Tom’s Hardware further explains that Apple’s first 2nm chip overall is the M6, unveiled in August. Sharing some of the M6’s architecture, the A20 Pro reportedly features dual neural engines as well as new CPU and GPU cores.

The report adds that A20 Pro packs a six-core CPU with two performance cores that are 20% faster than the previous generation, plus four efficiency cores with neural accelerators, as Apple calls it a “desktop-class” processor and the fastest smartphone CPU.

According to Tom’s Hardware, its seven-core GPU delivers a 40% generational performance boost, with higher bandwidth and new neural accelerators that enable up to 2x faster FP8 compute. The two neural engines pack 32 cores in total, while memory bandwidth reportedly jumps 50% to what Apple calls the widest memory interface in an iPhone.

Beyond the chip itself, Apple has also revamped the A20 Pro’s packaging. The new approach places the silicon and memory dies side by side, keeping memory out of the SoC’s thermal path and allowing the dies to connect directly to the vapor chamber.

The redesigned chamber has three times the surface area of the iPhone 17 Pro, helping Apple achieve up to 40% higher sustained performance than the 17 Pro and twice that of the 16 Pro, according to MacRumors.

On the other hand, while Apple has unveiled its C2 modem to reduce the company’s reliance on Qualcomm, MacRumors points out that the iPhone 18 Pro and iPhone 18 Pro Max may use different modems, at least in the U.S.

Apple’s technical specifications page lists its C2 modem for the iPhone 18 Pro, but does not specify a modem for the U.S. version of the iPhone 18 Pro Max, the report notes, adding that pre-launch reports suggested that some iPhones could continue to use Qualcomm modems. With the C2 also powering the iPhone Duo, supply constraints could be one possible explanation, according to the report.

There will be a daily usage limit for Siri AI — coming on Monday with iOS 27 — with expanded access available for a fee in the future.

In Apple’s announcement of the Health Sensing features of the Apple Watch Series 12 and Apple Watch Ultra 4, the company notes there will be usage limits on ‌Siri‌ AI, intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground, and Apple Foundation Cloud models in the Shortcuts app.

From the announcement: Certain Apple Intelligence features that rely on server-side models are subject to daily usage limits, including but not limited to Siri AI, intelligent photo editing tools, Image Playground, and AFM 3 Cloud models in Shortcuts. Daily limits may vary by feature, request complexity, system demand, system policies, and other factors. Expanded access to such features will be available for a fee in the future.

Apple hasn’t provided details on what the fee will be or how it will be charged. However, at June’s Worldwide Developer Conference, the company said that higher iCloud+ tiers will include expanded access to the limited Apple Intelligence features.

Apple has confirmed that macOS 27 Golden Gate will arrive on September 14 with iOS 27 — and likely iPadOS 17. tvOS 27, watchOS 27, and visionOS 27.

macOS Golden Gate was formally announced at WWDC on June 8, 2026. Apple said that the operating system update focuses on refining features introduced in the previous release based on user feedback.You can read all about macOS Golden Gate here. 

There’s still time for some last minute tweaking, apparently. Apple has rolled out release candidates for those operating systems. A release candidate (RC), also known as gamma testing or “going silver,” is a beta version with the potential to be a stable product, which is ready to release unless significant bugs emerge.

Opened, it’s the thinnest iPhone ever, with a 7.6-inch inner display that’s the largest ever screen on an Apple smartphone. It packs a special nano-texture finish that minimizes glare. Closed, the 5.4-inch outer display delivers 90% of the screen area of iPhone 18 Pro in a “pocketable” design. Both displays share the same aspect ratio, so content scales proportionally; Apple says this ensures visual continuity. 

Apple CEO John Ternus says the iPhone Duo has an innovative hardware design and a precision hinge “that offers a smooth, satisfying feel with every use.” Powered by the new A20 Pro, iPhone Duo features an advanced thermal management system with a custom-designed vapor chamber and a dual-battery architecture.

Beneath the inner display, a new FaceTime camera stays hidden when not in use to keep the screen uninterrupted. The displays also feature ProMotion, Always On, and 3000 nits of peak outdoor brightness. Later this year, iPhone Duo will support Apple Pencil with USB-C, allowing users to take notes, sketch, or mark up documents on either display.

Touch ID is integrated into the side button for authentication whether the smartphone is open or closed. Users can also unlock the iPhone Duo using their Apple Watch. The design also features Camera Control to quickly launch the camera, including the brand-new Siri Camera mode, which lets Siri see what the user sees to answer questions and take action.

The iPhone Duo is crafted from grade 5 titanium with an enclosure that has a mirror-polished finish and a 3D-printed hinge cover with a contrasting micro-blasted finish. Ceramic Shield protects the back of iPhone Duo, and Ceramic Shield 2 on the front has 3x better scratch resistance than the previous generation, according to Apple.

The iPhone Duo is also splash-, water-, and dust-resistant with an IP68 rating. The hinge is engineered from more than 100 components to control opening and closing and support the center of the display. Internally, support ribs reinforce the structure for added stiffness, while antenna splits with ceramic fiber inserts.

The inner display is designed with a scratch-resistant coating and a nano-textured cover layer that’s made from a custom polymer that purportedly has up to 40% higher stiffness than other materials used in the industry. High-strength glass sits above and below the folding display panel, with custom adhesives that allow the layers to glide past one another like the pages of a book relieving bend stress, and a titanium plate at the bottom further enhances durability, according to Apple.

With the iPhone Duo’s 48MP Fusion Main camera, users can shoot sharp photos at up to 48MP resolution, capture in the 24MP default, and get closer to the subject with an integrated optical-quality 2x Telephoto. 

The 48MP Fusion Ultra Wide camera — the same as on iPhone 18 Pro models — captures wider fields of view and enables macro photography, while the Center Stage front camera can automatically take photos and videos in any orientation, so users don’t have to rotate iPhone for landscape selfies. Under the inner display, a new FaceTime camera helps users connect with friends and family whether the iPhone Duo is held open or propped on a surface for hands-free calls.

Apple says the foldable design with dual displays unlocks camera experiences that are not possible on any other iPhone. To wit:

• With Smart Take, users no longer miss out on being in the photo because they are behind the shutter or racing to beat a timer. On-device AI models running on A20 Pro analyze the scene in real time and automatically capture photos when subjects are posing.
• Users can take a selfie with the higher-resolution rear cameras and preview their shot on the outer display.
• Duo Preview shows the live preview on the outer display, helping subjects pose, check their framing, and guide the shot.
• Kid Cue plays animations from Peanuts on the outer display to grab the attention of children so they look at the camera.
• Duo FaceTime lets people who are with the user join a video call on the outer display, so everyone can share the moment without crowding around one screen.

The iPhone Duo supports 4K120 fps recording in Dolby Vision on the 48MP Fusion Main camera. Users can now apply Cinematic effects after capture at up to 60 fps, and Audio Mix introduces new algorithms that deliver higher-quality voices and can now isolate music. Time-lapse supports 4K in Dolby Vision HDR, and users can prop iPhone Duo up without needing a tripod to easily capture longer-duration videos.

The foldable iPhone has apps especially designed for it. Developers can adapt their apps using new application programming interfaces in the latest software developer kits and upcoming support for iPhone Duo in Device Hub in Xcode.
