That this smallest western state, which has the least amount of public land, can make that boast is evidence of our region’s generosity of spirit. Remarkably, this flourishing of wolves and other carnivores coincided with the recent boom in our human population and economy.
When I left Montana for Washington in 1984, I noticed a difference in how people talked about wildlife. In the Northwest, wildlife meant salmon, spotted owls, and killer whales. Except for cougars and black bears, iconic carnivores were gone and forgotten.
That absence has been rectified, with the turning point being 2008, before which both wolves and wolverines were considered extinct in the state. That July, I saw a wolverine hustling up a glacier on volcanic Mount Baker, near the Canadian border. Such sightings have since become frequent as far south as Mount Adams, near Oregon.
That same month brought photos from the North Cascades Mountains of Washington’s first wolf pups in a century. They have prospered since roaming in from adjacent Idaho and British Columbia. Today’s population is over 230 wolves in at least 43 packs.
Wolves are amazing and ecologically vital but also a challenge for those who live among them. In Washington, we have chosen to share the burden by funding ranchers to use practices that minimize conflict. We therefore have the fewest depredations on livestock among established wolf states, and consequently fewer wolves killed.
“Washington has more range riders than any other state,” says Jay Shepherd, who directs Conservation Northwest’s wolf field program. Range riders are specialized cowboys whose job is to steward cattle and keep the peace.

One more carnivore returned in 2008. Pacific fishers are a furbearing smaller relative of the wolverine that had been trapped out of Washington during the Great Depression. We have restored them to the Olympic and Cascades mountains, each now with a population of over a hundred fishers.
This was accomplished through a joint effort of the National Park Service, Washington Department of Fish and Wildlife, and Conservation Northwest, which I lead. We worked with Canadian trappers to capture and move fishers here. It was in late 2008 that the collaboration released its first batch of fishers into the Elwha River Valley of Olympic National Park.
It is remarkable to consider how that one year has so much significance in the return of carnivores to Washington. If it was part of a plan, it was not a plan of anyone I know of.
More recently, we have reintroduced Canada lynx to the Kettle Mountains of northeastern Washington, where excessive trapping in the 1970s eliminated them. A partnership among the Colville Confederated Tribes, Conservation Northwest, and others has since 2021 transplanted 41 lynxes that were captured near Kelowna, B.C. A final five more cats are being caught and released this month.

The prospects for grizzly bears are less clear. There has always been a couple dozen grizzlies in the Selkirk Mountains of far northeastern Washington, but the population in the Cascades has dwindled to near extinction. After decades of study and public process, the federal government approved a plan in 2024 to restore the North Cascades population. Shamefully, the Trump Administration is sitting on that plan.
Nevertheless, grizzly bears are important to First Nations north of the border, who intend to pursue the slow work of recovering the Cascades population. Lauren Terbasket, an elder of the Lower Similkameen Indian Band, said, “Grizzly bears are vital to our culture. We are determined to bring them home.”
There is much more still to be done. We need to protect more habitat in places, including corridors that link populations and structures that allow wildlife safe passage over (or under) highways. Broad public support has energized Washington’s wildlife and transportation agencies to collaborate on progress, including a statewide habitat connectivity plan. Someday wolves will use secure corridors and crossings to reach the abundant habitat of far western Washington, including Olympic National Park.
Washington is now a nearly complete wildlife state, a cause for celebration in what feels like dark times.

Communities and ecosystems across the country are feeling the impacts of severe weather, flooding, droughts, wildfires, hotter summers, and wetter winters fueled by climate change. What was hard to imagine several decades ago has become the new normal: longer hurricane seasons that produce increasingly severe storms have become an inevitability to prepare for each year. Megafires like the Camp Fire in California have caused unprecedented levels of destruction. Catastrophic flooding in the Great Plains and Midwest following a “bomb cyclone” caused an estimated $1 billion of damage in Nebraska alone. Throughout these disasters, the costs to wildlife and people, especially rural and historically disadvantaged communities, have been immeasurable.
And these impacts will only continue to get worse as climate change becomes increasingly severe. Scientists have stated we only have 12 years to get climate policies in place to drastically reduce our carbon emissions in order to avoid the worst impacts of climate change.

The rest of the world recognizes the urgency of climate change and is taking steps to create solutions. The Paris Agreement, which the U.S. signed in 2015 and which went into force in 2016, represents a global commitment to reduce greenhouse gas emissions and promote reforestation, climate adaptation, and a transition to a new clean energy economy.
When President Trump announced his intention to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Agreement in 2017 (we can’t formally withdraw until November 2020, after the Agreement has been in effect for four years), many people thought his decision would encourage other countries to try to withdraw from the Agreement and renege on their commitments to fight climate change. However, two years later, the U.S. remains alone, the only country to have announced its formal intention to leave the Agreement, and the only country in the developed world without a plan to address climate change. Rather than leading the world towards real climate action, President Trump’s announcement moved the U.S. away from the rest of the world, jeopardizing overall success of global climate actions and imperiling people and wildlife alike.
We need to work with the global community to create positive climate solutions, not ignore the problem and isolate ourselves from the rest of the world. The Climate Action Now Act, recently introduced in the House, represents a powerful first step toward getting us back on track. The bill would require the Trump Administration to produce a plan within 120 days to meet our commitments under the Paris Agreement, and would prevent the federal government from using any taxpayer resources to withdraw the U.S. from the Agreement.
But it wouldn’t prescribe climate policy — the Trump Administration would still have the authority to do so. This would mean that President Trump can create a plan for fighting climate change that is compatible some of his other agenda items, like energy independence and economic development.

Most Americans support a transition from fossil fuels to clean energy like solar and wind. This would reduce our emissions from the power sector but would require a massive mobilization of American resources. The necessary transition to clean energy must be done ethically and carefully, so that communities currently relying on a fossil fuel-based economy won’t be left out of the new economic opportunities.
We can’t ask rural and vulnerable communities to bear the costs of the necessary transition to a clean energy-driven economy and resilient ecosystems without reaping any benefits. We must invest in solutions where all people benefit from this transition — including fossil fuel dependent regions that are looking for fair and equitable opportunities to revitalize their communities with new jobs, new industries and a clean environment.

Many American species depend on a stable climate for survival. Shorter, milder winters due to climate change are already harming wildlife across the country. For example, these milder winter temperatures have allowed ticks to flourish, causing weight loss and anemia in moose calves. Bighorn sheep, lynx, and wolverines are threatened by reduced snowpack in the winter they rely on to provide sources of water in the spring. Snowshoe hares, which normally turn from brown to white in the winter to blend in with the snow, stand out as white creatures against a snowless background, making them more vulnerable to predators.
Besides the effects on wildlife of shorter winters and warmer temperatures, many coastal species are threatened by sea level rise. Sea turtles and shorebirds are losing coastal nesting grounds, and Hawaiian monk seals — already endangered — stand to lose critical portions of their habitat.
Wildlife can’t wait. It’s time for climate action to protect the most vulnerable species and communities.

We all remember in June when an overly ambitious raccoon scaled the facade of a Minnesota skyscraper. Not only was it a truly astonishing feat, but the mammal’s grand escapade captured the attention of millions. People were glued to twitter for minute by minute updates, as many had concerns that he may fall. However, as the video shows, after a full day’s trip to the very top of the 25 story building, a can of cat food was all it took to land this little guy safely back on the ground.

They’re also natural climbers,” explained Mizejewski. “Onlookers quickly learned that attempting to capture it with makeshift rescue equipment was not the way to go. When frightened it is natural for a raccoon to keep heading upwards to find safety high up in a tree…or in this case a skyscraper. It’s important to remember that wildlife were here first and we need to find ways to not only coexist peacefully, but to make sure they have natural habitat within our cities and towns—which is the main message of NWF’s Garden for Wildlife program that helps people do just that.”

Deer, depending on where you live, can be common backyard wildlife. However, this deer looks a little too comfortable in this backyard – so much so that he tries to make himself at home by having a go at a child’s play slide that he was not fully prepared for.

When a tourist at Yellowstone National Park tried to pick a fight with a fully grown bison over the summer, the scene escalated quickly. It turned out the one ton bovine did not have any interest in making friends that day and made this very clear after charging the tourist several times.

Not only is it pretty rare to catch something like this on video, to some people it’s also quite comical. When we think of cats we think about purring, meowing, even roaring… but screaming? Many people were surprised by this interaction. If you listen to the audio alone it sounds pretty horrifying, but, paired with their “will they, wont they” head butt battle, it’s really interesting to watch.

This funny video of what appears to be a crow looking into the KTVU weather camera shows just how curious some birds can be.

In Conclusion…
If we can learn anything from these videos it’s that every species has unique adaptations and behaviors and seeing them in action can sometimes be as confusing as it is amazing. Thankfully we have experts like David Mizejewski to shed some light on these interesting encounters and help us build appreciation and respect for wildlife of every shape and size.
Let’s take a look a ten “winter warriors” of the animal kingdom with incredible adaptations to help them withstand the unforgiving winter elements.

Polar bears live in the frigid north where winter temperatures average around -40 °F, but can sometimes drop as low as -92 °F (-69 °C). Thankfully, they have a few unique tricks up their sleeves to combat the cold. To start, those pretty white bears we love so much are not actually white! Polar bear skin is black, which helps them to retain heat by absorbing more of the sun’s rays. Their two layers of fur, on the other hand, are transparent and the longer outer layer is hollow and reflects light, giving them a white appearance. Under their skin is a layer of insulating fat up to 4.5 inches thick!

Wood frogs literally freeze during the winter months. They stop breathing and their hearts stop beating, but they produce a special glycerol-based substance that acts as antifreeze and prevents ice from forming within their cells. If the water within a cell were to freeze, it would expand and the ice crystals would tear the cell apart, killing the frog. Through this process, nearly 70 percent of the frog’s total body water is converted to ice. This adaptation allows the wood frog to surive even in the Arctic.

Many of the species on this list are increasingly at risk from a changing climate, and the wolverine is no exception. These rare and elusive mammals have dense fur and snowshoe-like paws for walking on deep snow. They live within a “refrigeration zone” in high-altitude, snow-covered peaks. Wolverines also use the snow as a natural refrigerator to store food to get through the late winter and early spring. When temperatures rise and snow melts, they are also at risk of losing high elevation habitats where females make their dens.

Red flat bark beetles are extremely cold-tolerant. Similar to wood frogs, they produce high levels of glycerol in their blood which keeps the water in their bodies from forming ice crystals. In addition, red flat bark beetles also dehydrate their cells, allowing them to survive in temperatures in which the antifreeze chemicals alone wouldn’t be enough to keep them from freezing. Red flat bark beetle larvae have been recorded surviving in temperatures of -238 °F (-150 °C). That’s one impressive insect!

Caribou are masters of the tundra. Their hooves are like multi-purpose tools that act as snowshoes for walking, paddles for swimming, and shovels to help them dig for grasses. But even more impressive is the adaptation developed in their eyes, which turn from gold in the summer to blue in the winter to help them see at lower light levels.

The Arctic woolly bear moth lives a unique lifestyle. As caterpillars, they will lie dormant and can withstand temperatures as low as -94°F (−70 °C) in this state. It only gets warmer than that in the Arctic for a short time each year, which means these caterpillars have a limited time to become active and to feed and build up the resources necessary to pupate. This means it may take seven years for a caterpillar to successfully pupate into a moth. The Arctic woolly bear moth caterpillar also expels water from its body to prevent cell death in freezing temperatures.

Black-capped chickadees are about 5 inches long and weigh barely more than a Sharpie marker. So, how, you might ask, does an animal so small make it through winter in the northern U.S.? Aside from storing food and roosting in small, protective tree cavities, black-capped chickadees have an important biological adaptation: nocturnal hypothermia. During winter nights the chickadees will enter a state of hypothermia, effectively allowing them to lower their body temperature in order to store energy. Black-capped chickadees in northern environments also store more body fat in winter, providing greater insulation from the cold and more fuel for keeping warm. Together, these adaptations make black-capped chickadees tiny but formidable winter warriors.

Lynx live in remote northern forests in North America. They have long, thick fur that acts as an insulating winter coat. Their large paws let them walk on the snow with ease and allow them to silently stalk their prey. Lynx populations are dependent upon prey populations — particularly the nimble snowshoe hare — so adaptations like their impressive noses help them thrive.

Don’t let their cute pointy ears and fluffy tails fool you; arctic foxes are tough! They have incredibly thick fur and a bushy tail that can wrap around them like a scarf, keeping their noses warm. Their short legs, ears, and snout help retain body heat, and the dense fur on the bottom of their paws prevents heat loss through their feet and helps them gain traction on the ice. Arctic foxes use their acute sense of hearing to locate prey deep beneath the snow and refrain from drinking water in the winter as not to lower their core temperature. Instead, they get water through their food.

There are a number of impressive species on this list, but perhaps none more so than the tardigrade. This extremophile, affectionately called the “water bear” or “moss piglet,” is a microorganism no more than 1.5 mm long that is found in many ecosystems around the world, from mountain tops to rain forests to the deep sea. It can withstand temperatures ranging from -328 °F to 304 °F (-200 °C to 151 °C). It can even survive the vacuum of space!
Tardigrades do this by undergoing a process called cryptobiosis, in which all metabolic activities halt. This would mean certain death for most animals, but not the tardigrade! It has the ability to reverse the cryptobiosis when conditions become more favorable, which is pretty darn cool.
As climate change continues to impact our planet, wildlife are faced with extreme temperatures and changes in historically reliable snowfall. You can help by sending a message to your Senators and Representatives, urging them to support climate-smart policy that benefits both people and wildlife.

Loyola Marymount and Columbia University, another college attended by President Obama, share the kings of the beasts as their mascot. Lions are an iconic and beautiful species but they are now facing sickness brought on by climate change. Lions of the Serengeti lost a third of their population in seven years (1994 to 2001) when extreme drought followed by heavy seasonal rains caused widespread disease and death. As climate change worsens, more events like this could endanger lion populations.

The existing Jackpine mine is already one of the largest in the area, producing 200,000 barrels of tar sands crude every day — more than three billion gallons every year — and by expanding the mine Shell hopes to add an extra 100,000 barrels per day to that figure (for a total of 300,000 bpd). By any measure the impacts to the region would be devastating: almost 50 square miles of destroyed or disturbed land in the boreal forest, a 128 billion gallon “tailings pond” for the project’s toxic waste, mining-out of eight miles of the Muskeg River. The mining operation alone would produce more carbon dioxide than half a million cars on the road every day, and that’s before you factor in the pollution created when that oil is burned.
In its submission to the Canadian Environmental Assessment Agency (CEAA), Shell tried to gloss over the toll that Jackpine would take on wildlife, but its own statistical projections (not to mention common sense) show that animals would be hit hard by the huge operation: Woodland caribou, which are already suffering huge population declines due to industrial development in the boreal forest, would lose about half their habitat in the area (compared to pre-industrial numbers); wood bison would lose almost 40%, and the Canada lynx over 30%. Birds are hit even harder, with the Canada warbler losing over 60% of its habitat, the black-throated green warbler about 44%, and the barred owl 43%. Species like wolverine, moose, beaver, and black bears would find themselves cut off from about a quarter of their land in the mine area.
We know that tar sands mining permanently damages the environment and destroys forests and wetlands with vast infrastructure, open pit mines, and toxic wastewater ponds up to three miles wide. Waterbirds mistake those tailings ponds for natural ponds. They land in the contaminated water and get coated in oil and other toxins. They often drown, die from hypothermia, or suffer from ingestion of toxins.
The Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, which is already wrestling with Shell over the company’s steamroller approach to development, is challenging the project in court, pointing out the harm that traditional tribal lands will suffer and saying that Shell and the provincial government have ignored their legal obligation to consult with tribes.
“We don’t want to take Shell to court, but we feel our treaty rights need to be addressed,” Eriel Deranger, a communications coordinator for the Athabasca Chipewyan First Nation, said. “We have repeatedly asked for more meaningful consultation, and don’t believe the government has done its due diligence. We are taking this very seriously.”
For those of us in the US who have seen poorly tar sands pipeline companies treat tribes and other communities, this is a depressingly familiar refrain. But we should also recognize that Shell’s projects are directly linked to our demand for oil, and we can put a stop to mines like Jackpine by shifting to cleaner energy sources and refusing to be the middleman for Canada’s dirty fuel.

Basically untouched until recent decades, the boreal forest’s great natural riches may also turn out to be its undoing: massive amounts of oil have been found in deposits known as “tar sands,” and the energy industry has kicked off a full-scale war on Mother Nature in their rush to boost their profits. Aided by a government that seems determined to wreck the country’s eco-friendly reputation, Big Oil is transforming huge parts of Alberta, Canada into something out of a nightmare, destroying vital wildlife habitat and putting whole populations at risk.
Read on to learn more about nine remarkable species that are directly threatened by tar sands development, then send a message to the President to help protect them.
The Canadian federal and provincial governments seem happy to turn a blind eye to the problem, and a stakeholder group that should be leading the charge to protect this iconic species — the Endangered Species Conservation Committee — is stocked with representatives from the energy industry, agriculture and timber companies, who watered down the caribou recovery plan to a toothless piece of paper. And even then, Environment Minister Peter Kent ignored a court order and refused to issue emergency protections for at-risk herds. Scientists fear that industrial development could cause Canada’s woodland caribou to vanish by the end of the century.
Our understanding of gray wolves has come a long way since the days of Little Red Riding Hood. They are impressively smart, social animals that spend as much time playing as hunting, and live together in close-knit packs of 4 to 7 animals.
But in the eyes of the Canadian government this makes them a threat, and an easy scapegoat for the recent rapid declines of the caribou herds. So the government has embarked upon a plan to “cull” wolf populations using poison-laced bait and aerial hunts from helicopters. The poison, strychnine, is known for an excruciating death that progresses painfully from muscle spasms to convulsions to suffocation, over a period of hours. As if that weren’t awful enough, other animals like eagles and even domesticated dogs have been unintended casualties of the baiting campaign.
It shouldn’t come as a surprise by now that tar sands development has directly encroached on bear habitat, leading to more interactions between humans and this species. Unfortunately, the government’s approach has been similar to their wolf plan: shoot ’em and keep digging for oil.
Alberta Sustainable Resource Development says 145 black bears were killed by Fish and Wildlife conservation officers last year after being habituated to garbage in the oilsands region. The number of bears shot in the Fort McMurray district was nearly three times the count the previous year and the highest in recent history, said spokesman Darcy Whiteside. Nearly half — 68 bears — were shot in oilsands camps and facilities after being attracted to the camp by food, garbage or other attractants, Whiteside said Tuesday.
Unlike bears, lynx shy away from contact with humans. Development in the eastern part of Canada has already forced out the big cats, and pressure from tar sands exploitation in Alberta is causing concerns there as well. And there’s a critical connection between gray wolves and lynx: wolves kill coyotes, which directly compete with lynx for snowshoe hare and other prey. So fewer wolves means more coyotes, which means fewer lynx. For a population that’s already threatened, that’s bad news. On the other hand, protecting wolves means lynx may rebound as well.
The big birds migrate thousands of miles each year from their breeding grounds in western Canada to as far south as Mexico, fattening up for a month in Nebraska’s Platte River valley. But this exposes them to a double-whammy from tar sands, with Alberta’s energy development destroying prime nesting habitat, and the danger of a spill in the Nebraska Sandhills region (from which they take their name) that could take away a crucial feeding ground. As it happens, their migratory pathway overlaps the route of the proposed Keystone XL tar sands pipeline almost mile-for-mile, meaning that a spill at any point will put this iconic species in harm’s way.
But walleye and several other native species of fish might soon become a scarce commodity if Big Oil gets its way. Residents of Fort Chipeweyan, Alberta (most of whose residents are First Nations members) have reported a pretty scary development in the last few years: lots and lots of deformed fish downstream of the tar sands developments. In 2010, commercial fishing ground to a halt due to concerns about heavy metals like mercury and cadmium…as if anyone would want to eat a filet with a golf-ball sized tumor. The Canadian government, not surprisingly, contests these claims, but independent data shows that contamination has reached 30 times the federally-accepted levels.
In addition to all that, tar sands extraction requires a lot of water — up to three barrels of water for every barrel of oil — and this has disrupted the normal cycles of of the Athabasca river and surrounding watersheds.
This species has been a major part of native culture and their diet for millennia, but with numbers near Fort McKay, Alberta declining 60% in recent years, First Nations elders now have to travel up to 200 kilometers to find moose during their traditional hunt. Moose meat has also tested high in arsenic and carcinogens created by tar sands mining, endangering the health of the region’s indigenous communities.
Like woodland caribou, moose are prey for gray wolves, and toxins in moose meat spells trouble for their predators.
Scaup (pronounced “skawp”) are a favorite of hunters but, like so many other creatures, tar sands operations are taking a toll. In addition to direct habitat loss, Big Oil has created a particularly gruesome way for these birds to die. One of the dirtiest parts of oil mining is so-called “tailings ponds,” gigantic open pits where the industry dumps its liquid waste. There are lots of these contaminated tailings ponds in the delta region, filled with toxic chemicals and oil, but which appear to flying birds like just another good spot to land. And when they do, it’s not hard to imagine what happens: slow, painful death. The industry’s solutions have ranged from the simple (and ineffective), like scarecrows, to the absurd — supersonic “cannons” that boom loud enough to disturb animals for miles around, and scare off any birds from landing in the sludge.
And perhaps the biggest threat of all is the danger posed by global warming, which has already reached a tipping point and could be pushed over the edge by burning Canada’s tar sands oil. Rising sea levels, extreme droughts, flooding — it might sound like the Apocalypse but in fact it’s already happening.
Speak up now! Tell President Obama to stand up for wildlife in the tar sands region, and stand strong against Big Oil’s plans to destroy the boreal forest.

This Labor Day weekend, a friend and I (and Milo the dog, pictured above for no good reason, except he is my dog) were about 15 minutes out of town on a dirt road on the way to a quick morning hike when we saw a lynx by the side of the road. That’s rare and very exciting.
They are listed as a threatened species in the lower 48, but in Alaska, a place where we have a chance to do it right, there is a healthy population. Despite that, I’ve only seen three lynx in my 17 years here.
But after five minutes, we began to seriously worry that it was a stuffed lynx set out as a practical joke. Then it stirred itself and strolled across the road and into the woods. It was tall and lean with a short black tail.
We guessed it weighed about 40 pounds (although males average 22 pounds, so the excitement may have made us over-estimate), with feet like small frisbees for running on the snow.
Lynx tend to avoid people so I’ve included the picture I took with my iPhone (above left). It clearly proves that we saw a lynx, or possibly a tree stump, an extremely large marmot, or the Loch Ness Monster.
