For those of a certain vintage, we remember when discussions about corp goth exploded into the scene, the questions about how one maintains an air of youthful rebellion without selling out to a puritanical business culture, and how one might retain their identity in a culture that extrapolates morality and work ethic from appearance. A fashion and ideology was developed and debated among goths pursuing long term careers that didn't involve making music or ghost hunting. Today though the corp goth style and the discussion that came along with it seem to have all but vanished, we're going to be talking about why that might be, recount our own experiences in the corporate world and share advice for those getting into or already employed at large companies.

084: Goths of Color: Representation, Agency, and Marginalization

This month we are continuing our special series of expert panels as we take deep dives into latent issues and hot topics within the community, We previously discussed whether or not goth was political and explored the deeply ingrained misogyny of industrial, and this week we are exploring the intersectionality and experiences of people of color.

Whether goth or not, in America we live in a culture built on colonization, white washing and imperialism. The stories around which our culture connects are white, our histories are littered with appropriation of indigenous practices and our present is full of tacit ignorance about the ways this continues to reinforce the pain and inequality for people of color in our communities. Oppressed groups like black women have a barrier to self actualization that privileged groups who benefit from a history of imperial patriarchy do not.

For as much lip service we give to goths being othered, discriminated against and bullied out of society, the face of our scene is still very often white. The diversity of gender, sexual expression and transgression of power structures was implicit to the music scene in the 80's however today, the ways in which people of color are represented and welcomed in our scene gets little of the attention among the discourse of cultural issues like commodification, defining boundaries, and music recommendations. Being as we live in a time when the stories we build our identities around in America are in flux and being discussed and debated, this seems like a gross oversight within our communities.

Goth itself is a-theistic in that it makes no positive religious claims, one can ascribe themselves to any religious system or eschew them altogether without an impact on their goth identity; so it's not abnormal to find goths who are catholic, protestant or any other flavor of Christian belief. That said, there exists a community of people who explicitly call themselves Christian Goths, a label which denotes often (in my experience) conservative evangelical ideals merged with a goth aesthetic. But how do Christian Goths fit into goth, and where do their values, norms, and social behaviors diverge from those of the broader goth culture? My guests and I will be discussing this, our personal experiences as Christian Goths and more on this episode!

This week we are going to be discussing goth music, but more interestingly those sites of liminality and ambiguity where what we've come to know as goth music collides and makes love to pop and indie music. What effect has that had on culture and clubs both historically and today, and what does this mean for the future of the genre?

In recent years we've seen an explosion of hard to classify acts that skirt the edge of goth culture and sound, bands such as chelsea wolfe, king dude, zola jesus, them are us too, cult of youth, Savages, Austra and so on. Do these bands mirror the sort of early 80's melting pot of goth, synthpop, glam rock, new wave, deathrock etc, Are we just seeing Indie bands taking on a darker yolk, or are we seeing some new form of "art goth", or perhaps an eschewing of genre classifications in general?

No longer do we have to create and publish our own zines, start a band, or run a goth event to express a sense of cultural identity and community. We are now able to project ourselves, our lives, and our scenes in HD video for the whole world to see and talk about. This has allowed our dark little culture to be opened up to a whole new audience of potential goths who may become seduced by the dark side and help create and participate in the culture, even if they don't have a local scene. But does this type of access actually encourage goths to stop engaging with their local community? Goth has an older history with the S&M community than one might think. In the 80's these sex shops were a refuge for goths, punks, and alternatives alike, both as a safe space for expression and one of the few options to buy and modify alternative clothing. S&M was also seen in several deathrock and goth micromedia outlets, from music videos by bands like Nervous Gender, to transgressive publications like Propoganda Magazine, to full blown communities like the one centered around psychic TV. Even today, clubs that cater to BDSM clientele often host goth nights, blurring the lines between where goth and explicitly sexually deviant lifestyles start and end. Both BDSM and goth share lifestyle components, and both have seen their sartorial style, mined by pop artists and fashion lines, in an attempt add a darker edge to the mundanity of mainstream aesthetic, as if goth and BDSM were simply spectacular styles to be appropriated for similarly vacuous purposes. So on today's episode, I'd like to explore those boundaries of style, community, and lifestyle, to see where these two cultures crossover and where they diverge.

Much like the characters in Gothic fiction who are oft prone to sticking around or coming back after death, so too Gothic Literature refuses to remain buried and forgotten. Generally agreed to have been conceptualized with The Castle of Otranto, the first wave of Gothic fiction, as it were, was from 1760-1780, and the better known second wave at the end of the 19th century, produced many works with which we remain familiar, including Dracula, Dr Jekyll and Mr Hyde, and The Picture of Dorian Grey. Today The Gothic continues to cycle through culture with new twists and new existential terrors with films such as Crimson Peak, books such as Prince Lestat and the Realms of Atlantis, as well as pop culture, music, art, clothing, and of course, the goth subculture.

Traditionally speaking, before the internet became ubiquitous, sociologists considered diffusion vital to the survival of subculture. For goth in the 80's there was a heavy reliance on zine's and newsletters for the transfer of information and facilitation of discourse. Ironically, now that we have an efficient medium for such diffusion, many claim that medium is ushering in the death of subculture.

Despite the general angst or love surrounding the internet, surprisingly little qualitative or statistically significant data on the effect of the internet on goth or subcultures in general is available. This month we are talking about what it means to be an individual within a group context, what elements create a goth identity, and how authenticity plays into the structure of goth culture and identity construction. While the supposed bifurcation of individualism and conformism, is less discursive a topic than "what is goth", it is nevertheless just as contentious. We've all heard comments such as, "you all look the same", or, "goth is what you make it", and, "it's about being a pure individualist".
Goth identity in some ways then, might be seen as a paradox. So, what we are going to look at tonight is how a goths lived experience, adherence to venerated ideals, and their shared epistemology, coexist with a simultaneous eschewing of labels, and desire to avoid precise classification. I'm hoping we can also touch on the extent to which that paradoxical identity has lessened or stayed the same over time, and what practical impact that has on an individual.

While i have venerated the goth subculture and find it a wonderful beautiful group, I am going to try to take a hard critical look at some aspects of goth this time around for the sake of helping to build a better culture.
