Creating a custom workspace at home or in the office can significantly enhance productivity, improve mental well-being, and boost creativity.

By personalizing the layout, incorporating ergonomic furniture, and designing an inspiring environment, individuals can tailor their spaces to meet specific needs and preferences.

This approach not only reduces stress and increases comfort but also fosters a more efficient and creative work atmosphere.

Key Takeaways

  • Custom workspaces enhance productivity by tailoring layouts to individual needs.
  • Ergonomic furniture in personalized setups improves comfort.
  • Inspiring environments boost creativity and foster efficient work habits.
  • Tailored spaces reduce stress by meeting specific preferences.
  • Improved mental well-being is achieved through customized decor and design.
  • Personalizing workspaces at home or office leads to a more efficient work atmosphere.

Enhanced Productivity

A custom workspace can drastically enhance productivity. When individuals create personalized layouts, they optimize their workflow by arranging tools and materials within easy reach. This reduces time spent searching for items and increases focus.

By customizing the environment, one can minimize distractions and create a zone conducive to concentrated work. These modifications often lead to more efficient task completion and higher quality output.

Personalized Layout

Personalized layouts allow individuals to design their workspace according to specific tasks and preferences. This could mean setting up dual monitors for graphic designers or soundproofing for those in noisy environments. Tailoring the layout ensures that every essential item is strategically placed, reducing unnecessary movements and interruptions.

As a result, workers can maintain a smoother, more streamlined workflow.

Ergonomic Furniture

Ergonomic furniture is integral to any custom workspace. Chairs with adjustable height and lumbar support prevent physical strain, making long working hours less taxing.

Ergonomic desks with adjustable heights enable users to alternate between sitting and standing, promoting better posture and reducing the risk of musculoskeletal issues.

Properly positioned monitors and keyboards also help in maintaining an optimal eye level and hand position. These ergonomic considerations not only boost productivity by reducing discomfort but also enhance overall well-being.

Improved Mental Well-being

A custom workspace plays a significant role in improving mental well-being. Tailored environments address individual preferences and needs, creating a sense of control and satisfaction.

When employees or home workers have a space that reflects their personality and functional requirements, it leads to a more positive mood. Greater engagement with tasks is also often observed in such personalized settings.

This personalized approach can reduce feelings of overwhelm and burnout, contributing to a healthier mental state.

Reduced Stress

A personalized workspace can substantially reduce stress levels. By configuring the space to minimize clutter and distractions, individuals experience fewer interruptions.

An organized environment fosters a sense of calmness and control, which is crucial for stress management.

Additionally, incorporating elements like plants or calming colors can create a soothing atmosphere, further alleviating stress. Reduced stress leads to better focus and higher productivity, benefiting overall job performance.

Increased Comfort

Comfort is another crucial aspect of mental well-being that a custom workspace can enhance. By selecting furniture and equipment that cater to personal comfort preferences, individuals can create a more inviting and supportive work setting.

Ergonomic furniture minimizes physical discomfort, which translates to less mental strain.

Climate control, lighting, and personalized accessories all contribute to creating a space where individuals feel at ease.

Enhanced comfort directly influences positive mental health, allowing for a more satisfying and productive work experience.

Boosted Creativity

A custom workspace can greatly enhance creativity. It does this by crafting an environment specifically designed to inspire and motivate. Personalized setups allow individuals to organize their surroundings in ways that encourage innovative thinking and problem-solving.

This tailored approach supports many creative processes:

  • Brainstorming sessions
  • Drafting designs
  • Conceptualizing new ideas

By fostering an atmosphere conducive to creativity, people can experience higher levels of inspiration and originality.

Inspiring Environment

An inspiring environment is critical for enhancing creativity. Personal touches such as motivational quotes, artwork, and natural elements like plants can create a stimulating setting.

Natural light and strategic use of color significantly impact creative thinking. Proper lighting reduces eye strain, while specific color palettes evoke different moods and inspire creative thought.

By carefully designing their workspace, individuals can foster an environment that constantly encourages new ideas and innovative solutions.

Customizable Decor

Customizable decor further boosts creativity by allowing people to express their unique tastes and preferences. This not only makes the workspace more enjoyable but also continuously stimulates the mind.

Items such as:

  • Customizable wall panels
  • Adjustable shelving
  • Interchangeable desk accessories

can be adapted to different projects and ideas. This flexibility enables workers to regularly refresh their surroundings, keeping the environment vibrant and conducive to ongoing creative efforts.

Conclusion

Creating a custom workspace tailored to individual needs and preferences significantly enhances productivity, mental well-being, and creativity.

By optimizing layouts, incorporating ergonomic furniture, and designing inspiring environments, individuals can achieve a more efficient, comfortable, and stress-free work atmosphere.

Personalizing both home and office workspaces leads to better focus, reduced stress, increased comfort, and a consistent boost in creativity, making it an essential strategy for maximizing overall work performance.

Back in the 80s, the idea of ergonomically designed office spaces was just taking hold.  Human Factors was a fairly new field and the idea that we could increase our productivity by ensuring that our work spaces were more than a table, chair and trash can with a side filing cabinet was revolutionary.  It was discovered and proven that simple things like lighting, desk height, shelf placement and color all work together with our physical, mental and emotional aspects to impact – either positively or negatively – our productivity when working.

Working at home, in one form or another, is virtually impossible to avoid simply because of the Age of Electronics.  You want to check in with your mother to find out how she’s doing? Send an email (i.e., sit at the desk and work).  You want to pay your bills? Log in to your online bank account and access the Bill Pay function (i.e., sit at the desk and work). You’d like to expand your music library? No problem – simply log into your online entertainment account and begin searching and downloading the latest and greatest music (i.e., sit at the desk and work).  According to the NY Times, 43% of employed Americans worked remotely (often from home) at least some of the time.  (Chokshi, Niraj (2017) “Out of the Office: More People Are Working Remotely, Survey Finds.” NY Times, February 15).  Over 50% of Americans pay their bills online and more than 56% of bills are paid via online channels.  What does this mean for you? It means that, if you don’t already do it, the trends show that you, too, will be working at a computer to pay your bills. (Orem, Tina (2017) “56% of All Bills Now Paid Online, Study Finds” CUTimes.com, January 26.).  Oh, and let’s not forget about the email. Yes, the email.  The average person is spending close to 20 hours reading, responding to and sending emails each week.

Working from home is unavoidable in the world we live in.

Working from a dining room chair at the kitchen table IS avoidable, even in small places.

The costs of not providing a well-designed work space in your home include: reduced productivity; back, neck and head pain (which results in more medical costs and further reduced productivity); more time spent working due to the distractions of home; and disorganization that results in frustration and lost productivity.

The benefits of providing a well-designed work space in your home include: increased productivity, decreased distractions, tax breaks for dedicated space, better health, and an overall sense of well-being.

You work from home, whether it is “personal” work or professional work.  Treat yourself well and provide a space in which to perform that work.  Custom office spaces address your wants and needs, incorporate good Human Factors design principals, and provide you the ability to be organized, efficient and healthy as you get your work done.  You do work. We design, make and install the space that will work for you.

A bedroom closet can be one of the toughest places in the house when it comes to organization and an uncontrollable amount of stuff.  Getting dressed in an out of control closet can be overwhelming day to day. There is nothing better than walking into a space, which is organized, and everything in its proper place. The initial steps to getting a closet into this condition can be overwhelming at first, but here are some tips to getting that closet into tip top shape.

1. Don’t be afraid to purge!

There is no way organization can get started if the space is filled with junk you never use or wear. Clothing or items can often hold sentimental value, but when trying to get rid of things truly ask yourself, “Do I really like this?” “Have I worn it in the past year?” “Does it fit with my current image?” “Does it make me happy?” If you can answer yes to most of these questions, then keep the item! But if you struggle to make a decision then let it go! There is someone out there who could probably use it much more than you.

2. Use wasted wall space!

Empty wall space can be a great place to put forgotten scarves, belts, hats or purses. These items are often forgotten, shoved in a drawer or plastic bin. Having them out and neatly organized on the wall, can help remind you of what you have so that they actually get worn!

3. Organize your shoes!

Shoes most often become a tangled mess on the closet floor where one shoe can’t even find its partner. Shoe organizers or shelves placed on the back of the closet door, neatly on the closet floor or hanging in the closet can be a great way to get all of that mess organized.  Organizing your shoes by style or by function can also be a good way to keep them in place and easily accessible.

4. Keep the closet shelves neat!

The top shelf in a closet can be a great place to fold and store sweaters, sweatshirts or even jeans. However, these stacks often topple over or just become messy eventually making the top shelf the dumping ground for anything and everything. Using shelf dividers or cubbies can be an excellent way to keep this from happening and allow for the stacks to stay organized!

There are a million different techniques to keep your space organized. Choose what works best for you and stick to it! Hopefully these few little tips can set you well on your way!

Rumor has it that William Murphy first invented the Murphy bed in the early 1900’s. Apparently, he was ever eager to woo a local opera singer. However, his one room apartment allowed no space for a parlor. It was customary at the time to never entertain a woman in your bedroom and so William sneakily designed the ever-popular “disappearing bed” in order to entertain, as well as potentially woo. This funny history, though not overly respectable speaks to the functionality of the Murphy bed.

Murphy beds can be used in a variety of settings: spare beds in a vacation home, extra sleeping space in a game room or office or, as in Williams case, in small living spaces. The selling point with the Murphy bed is its multi-functionality. It allows for living and sleeping to occur in the same space, without having to monopolize space. Murphy beds prove to be extremely practical in a number of scenarios.

Leaving a spare room open and functional

Offices or playrooms can be excellent spaces for a Murphy bed. Unless guests are constantly pouring through your front door, having a guest room in the house can leave a perfectly good room untouched all year. A Murphy bed allows for a completely functional space to easily double as a guest room when need be.

Condos and studio apartments

With the ever-growing demand of housing in cities, condos and studio apartments are becoming the standard of living. The downside of these spaces are their limits on space. Providing adequate room for living as well as sleeping space can be tricky, however a Murphy bed can effectively eliminate this problem. A Murphy bed allows for quick transition between a living space and bedroom without the hassle of unmaking or folding up your bed each morning.

Murphy beds provide an undeniable level of practicality and function when planning the layout of a new room, studio, office or hobby room.

  • Are you a fashion addict?
  • An aspiring chef?
  • An entrepreneur?
  • Someone who wants to be successful and well-organized?

Closets are underrated, to say the least. Whether it’s a new pantry, cabinet set, or walk-in closet, we’ve got your back and want you to achieve your goals and maintain a balanced lifestyle.

Take the men and women focused on their career – business people. The individuals who rise in the morning with a sense of purpose, drive, and determination. In order to shine, you have to don a sense of confidence and professionalism day in and day out. This means polished shoes, pressed button-ups, and classy blazers.

When looking your best and preserving your wardrobe is a priority, there is no other option but a custom closet. If you own your home, we can revolutionize your drab and undersized closet and change it into a dream room in your home. This is a space that not only helps you get ready in the morning and settle down at night, but it is the place where your motivation begins.

Take the men and women who spend much of their day in the kitchen – whether you have a large family, or just love to cook. Chefs, whether professional or not, know the importance of making sure food is organized into their proper storage space. This ensures optimal preservation of food, and making sure items are rotated before their expiration date.

When it comes to your dream kitchen, a custom made pantry is your only option. Imagine shelves and storage areas designed for your family in mind. Imagine a pantry where you call the shots and decide how you want it to be built and utilized for years to come. Inserts, electric outlets, drawers of different sizes, compact places to store your personal appliances – you name it. At Cabinet Systems, we offer free consultations and give you quotes based on what you want to see in your home.

Take the men and women working from home – they often go overlooked or can be misunderstood. But why? They’ve got the right idea! If a job can be done from any computer, why spend money renting out an office when you can apply the convenient and cost-effective method of working in the privacy of your own home?

Yet it doesn’t take long to realize that home often provides distractions that the office does not. The laundry basket full, waiting to be folded. The dirty dishes in the sink. The kid that was sick and stayed home from school. That’s why you need a custom office from Cabinet Systems. Bring the workplace to your home, and keep it all in one room! While distractions from home cannot be totally minimized (especially if you have children!), a free and clear organized room in your house for office work can make you feel less like you’re at home – at least while you’re in that particular room. Keep your career and home life a little more separate – all from the place you already call home!

Are your closets, cabinets, and floors bursting with clutter?

The truth is, many people have a hard time giving away objects they no longer need. This can accumulate over time and turn into an overwhelming hoard which can make living spaces very difficult to live in.

More accurately explained, the necessity of storage is to be able to keep occasion-specific items out of sight until they are needed. There are items used on a regular basis that need to be located at any given time, yet they still have a designated space.

Now, no one likes spending an unreasonable amount of time trying to find something. In fact, frantic searches can uproot once organized items and ultimately cause the misplacement of other objects in the process! These messes can appear sporadically in the most inconvenient places.

Simply put, clutter is any object that does not have a place to go.

Psychology has proven that an excess of possessions placed haphazardly can cause unnecessary stress; invoking thoughts of feeling out of control over all areas of life; not just the home or workplace.

Here are some tips hand-picked from some of the best organizers, to purge the superfluous and organize the necessary.

Baby Steps

A great way to do this is to take one item at a time, and if you struggle to make a decision, ask these questions:
  1. Would you buy it in a store if you were seeing it for the first time?
  2. Is it worth what you paid for it / have you gotten your money’s worth out of it?
  3. Have you worn/used it in the last year?
  4. Does it improve your quality of life, safety, or security?
  5. Does it have sentimental value?
  6. If the answer to #5 is yes, is it a family heirloom? A lock of your baby’s hair? Something too precious and irreplaceable to throw away?

If the answer to any of these questions is “no”, chances are, it needs to go.

Another important question is: “Am I keeping this out of obligation or expectation?” So often we keep unwanted gifts that have been given to us out of respect for the giver. If it is not an irreplaceable item (refer to questions 5 & 6) or they have no intention of asking for it back, it is yours to do with – to re-gift, to re-purpose, or even throw away.  Do not keep anything out of guilt!

Create 3 boxes or bags: one for keep, one to throw away, and one for storage. If something is broken or damaged there is no point trying to sell it. Be honest with yourself and confront everything with the above questions if there is any internal wrestling. If you tend to be an overly-sentimental person, experts recommend having a family member or friend help you through this process. They can walk you through these questions when you may find them difficult to answer.

Clothes:

If you go an entire year without wearing something, the likelihood of it being worn ever again is substantially low. One way to tell if it has been a year is to first take all clothes in the closet at the beginning of a New Year and hang them up backwards; with the hooks facing the outside. Each time something is worn, return it to the closet the way you normally would; with the hook facing the back of the closet. At Christmas, see which hangers are still backwards. Those will indicate the clothes that are no longer used!

Misc Items:

  • Purge your coffee table and bookshelves of old magazines. Throw away receipts that are past the tax year or that you will not need. Examine which books you will probably not reread and give those away as well. Some used bookstores will even let you sell back books! Get rid of duplicates; and when applicable, merge duplicates (i.e. two half-empty bags of flour). For bulky and unused electronics, sell them on Gazelle.com or Nextworth.com.

Something that always seems to accumulate everywhere are loose papers. For papers that are consistently pulled out of the filing cabinet and need to be in plain site for the time being, purchase a file box (often used to store books) and store all your go-to papers.

Remember that places like the pantry and refrigerator should be gone through roughly once a season to ensure nothing is outdated or expired.

Have no idea where to start? Try starting with one drawer at a time. Commit to cleaning and downsizing a drawer a day until you feel comfortable taking on more.

Did you know that over 82 million homes in the United States have a garage? Originally designed to store a car, over the years they have become a room to accommodate so much more.

Fun facts:

  • With real estate prices rising, garages have been re-purposed into extensions of the house.  It is commonly converted into craft rooms, playrooms, with 40% of American homes having a “Man Cave”.
  • Several successful corporations began in garages, such as Apple, Hewlett-Packard, Google, and the Walt Disney Company.
  • Some of the most world-famous bands – Nirvana, the Beatles, and Metallica – all began in a garage.
  • The least surprising statistic is that of storage. More than half of every homeowner uses their garage for storage space.

Making Storage in the Garage functional

The issue with using the garage for storage can be tricky because it is not often an insulated room. This means items that are temperature sensitive, such as artwork (oil paintings mostly), vinyl records, food, and musical instruments can be threatened by the changes from extreme hot to extreme cold. Therefore it is not recommended these items are stored there for long periods of time; especially if you live in a region with varying climates (which, most people do).

What’s more, many objects stored that could be considered non-household items: the lawnmower, power tools, bicycles, etc, are bulky and do not always fit in compact storage spaces. It is easy for the garage to become a place for mounds of clutter that do not belong in the house. It can become a devastating site of neglect and naturally develop into a downright disaster, to the point of no longer having room for a vehicle (What the garage is intended for)!

First, begin by sorting smaller items into categories. For example, a landscaping and gardening pile, a pile for holiday decorations, a pile for sports gear. If it is easier, organize this outside of the garage to separate items that are sorted from the ones that are waiting to be sorted. This is also the proper time to downsize and get unused and unwanted items out of the way.

Let Cabinet Systems help you by installing quality shelves and cabinets to accommodate your lifestyle and your families needs. This will create a place for everything and free up space for items needing to be easily accessed.

Shelving

Once your supplies have been organized according to type, and have been arranged in your cabinet complimentary to size, you can insure the space provided will be fully utilized. If there are still leftover items that are bulky and do not appear to fit anywhere, place them in storage bins, label, and stack on shelves next to the cabinets. This option is especially helpful for objects that are not utilized year-round; for example, decorations, camping supplies, and even clothes that are out of season (i.e., storing summer clothes during winter months). You do not want to store any objects in here that are more commonly used, as having to unstack, remove the lid, and dig, can get frustrating after awhile.

Hang It Up

Bicycles, snowboards, fishing poles, and the like can all be hung by attachable hooks from the ceiling or protruding from the wall.  If a garage has rafters, this can also be an excellent space to utilize without the use of hooks. For the workbench area, install smaller hooks for easy-to-access tools. This can be simpler and feel more open than constantly rummaging through a toolbox.

Re-purpose

Reuse items like buckets, or an old filing cabinet turned on its side with the drawers removed to store rakes, brooms, shovels, and more. It saves the precarious struggle of trying to balance them in a corner somewhere or up against a wall.

Kitchen cabinets and shelving are mandatory for every home; despite space, style, or family size. The kitchen can easily be one of the most utilized spaces in an entire home. We have all been there –  by the time everything has been cleaned and put away properly after a task such as making lunch, it is almost time to start the preparations for dinner! With Cabinet Systems, create and manage your own storage space for its highest functionality, by making everything easier to view, find, and replace. The kitchen is where magic can happen, so do not let clutter and preventable obstacles get in your way!

Using Pinterest, we have compiled a list of the best ways to utilize your kitchen cabinets. All ideas and photos are credited to various authors.

Prioritize

Are you continually digging for that one thing you always need? But it is always buried beneath a cluster of items you don’t need? Begin to organize your cabinets from bottom to top: most important and used to least used. Community plates are an obvious example of this design as every member of the household uses them. When it comes to bulkier mixing bowls or decorative party plates, store them up high for those rare and special occasions. This may be a no-brainer to some, but this is probably the best way to optimize kitchen use in its simplest form.

Compartmentalize

The phrase is an oldie but a goodie: “A place for everything, and everything in its place.” Contrary to what one would think, extra racks and shelves can actually make more room in a cupboard rather than take it up. For example, plates, or plastic storage container lids are thin but wide. When stored on their sides using a basic drying rack (pictured left), it allows more surface area of the cupboard to be utilized.

Another clever way to compartmentalize is by adding drawers to basic shelves. This is ideal for pantry items, especially if they are labeled by category. It carries the concept of a cabinet with the simplicity of shelving. Depending on how many lifts are in a pantry this can organize clutter and end it once and for all!

Hooks

Properly placed hooks can make items like measuring cups and various utensils easy to find, as well as prevent entanglement with other items. It is not recommended to install the hooks on the backs of cupboard doors, but rather in the back or sides of the cabinet. Small, removable hooks can be found at most housewares stores.

Loose Packaging

Whether it is spices, hot cocoa, or even instant noodles, random little packages can get lost in everything! Cubbies installed in the inside of the pantry itself can be useful for smaller and easily-lost items. One way to free up pantry shelves is to remove these individually wrapped packages out of their specific boxes. An example of this would be boxes of individually wrapped popcorn packs, or boxes of 1 serving size instant oatmeal!

Add Shelves

For cookbooks, plants, or other miscellaneous items. As long as the shelves are not exposed to high amounts of steam, paper items should be safe. Shelving is ideal for easy-access and displaying items in your cooking space for that extra pop of color or expensive plate set you want to show off to guests (notice also the ingenious use of hooks in the photo to the right). For a cleaner look, try to add shelves that match or compliment either the wood or color of your cupboards. These are also very easy to find and install, as materials for shelves can be purchased an any home improvement store.

If you own more than five pairs of shoes, you have probably experienced first hand what messes shoes can make. If not stored properly they can become an overwhelming mismatched pile by the front or back door, especially if there are more than two people living in the house. Ideal for shoe lovers and shopaholics, a custom shoe rack can help step up your shoe game and help you discover your best options when getting ready in the morning.

Custom shoe racks are specially designed not just for organization and comfort, but for presentation as well. When your best footwear has its own space it can eliminate the risk of losing pairs, and decrease the amount of filth and residue that can often accumulate when multiple pairs are thrown in a stack together.

To add an easy-to-find feature, opt for slightly slanted shelves with a rail, or “fence” in the front to prevent them from falling. It improves display and functionality, giving it a department store flair with a twist.

For those with fewer shoes and desiring a less-luxurious and more compact shoe area, small bins can be an excellent option. While shoes are not as visible it can provide easy retrieval and even quicker replacement. The downside is the lack of functionality for larger shoes such as boots or even high-tops. Furthermore this way of storage may not be ideal for those in more diverse climates; the areas that get all four seasons. If not, more footwear storage can be added in a different area of the closet fit to accommodate boots and bulkier foot items.

If you have always wanted a custom closet, understand that they are as fashionable as they are practical and functional. Meaning that an investment in storage is an investment in organization as well, and not appearance alone. Read or watch testimonials for examples of satisfied customers – it is a renovation they do not regret!

According to a survey conducted by Stanford University, over ten percent of all employees, based in the United States, work from their home. There are some huge benefits to working from home including, but not limited to, the time and money saved by not commuting. But, for some people, the lack of structure that comes with a traditional office setting may hinder their ability to work effectively. Below are some tips that may be helpful to keep you focused and ensure success of being productive in your home office environment.

Tip #1 – Have “working hours”

Working when you want is a great benefit to working from home because the 9 to 5 window may not be the best time slot for everyone. For example, some people are naturally more productive after 5 pm or before the 9 am hour. The advantage of a home based office is that you can pick the most productive times to work; the trick is that whatever time window you choose – stick to it and make that your work day.

Tip #2 – Dress for Success

A suit and tie or high heel shoes are not required for a home based office environment, but you should get out of your sleep/lounge wear to help you focus and differentiate work time from home life. This will also increase your productivity, ensuring that you have a successful day at the office.

Tip #3 – Schedule Breaks

Breaks are important, especially if you are in front of a computer for hours on end. Every couple of hours, physically get up, stretch your body and give your eyes a much needed rest from the computer screen. Walking away from your work area will help clear your head so that when you sit back down, you are better focused. You may also find that a break can help you find a clear solution to a looming problem that you have been struggling with, or it can release you from a writing or design block.

Tip #4 – Set boundaries

Once you have set your working hours and your break times, tell your family and friends. Stress the importance that interruptions during your scheduled working hours should be kept to emergencies only (and “what is for dinner?” or “where are my sneakers” are not considered emergencies). These boundaries are important because family members may believe that just because you are physically in the home that you are available to meet their needs.

Tip #5 – create a “To do List”

This is especially helpful for individuals who struggle with procrastination and are easily distracted as it will outline exactly what needs to get done in a particular time frame. If necessary, break this list down by one hour slots.

Tip # 6 – reduce clutter

Keep your desk and overall work space clean and organized because messes are distracting. If this not incentive enough, consider the fact that your desk has a tendency to be a germ magnet and can accumulate over 400 times more bacteria than a household toilet.

Tip #7 – Leave at the end of the day

As mentioned above, it is important to set working hours and stick to that schedule and that includes leaving the office on time. Working from home does not mean that you are to work whenever you are home. The trickiest part of having a home office is to find the delicate balance between work and home life. At the end of your day, “check out” by putting your computer away and engaging in family activities or getting out of the house.
