]]>Purpose: This award is presented to graduate students at U.S. and international universities who submit the highest quality research papers. This is a competitive award and submitted papers will be reviewed by the Awards Committee. The format to be followed is that of Environmental Science and Technology, except that the paper is limited to a maximum of 7,000 word equivalents, including figures, and supplementary/supporting documents, but excluding references.
Description: The Division of Environmental Chemistry is sponsoring graduate student research paper awards judged based on research and writing quality. Up to seven awards are granted each year consisting of a $1,000 cash award and a one-year membership in the Division of Environmental Chemistry. The awards will be presented at the Fall ACS National Meeting where the students will present their papers in an award symposium. Only those students that present their papers will receive the $1,000 cash award.

The award highlights efforts that connect research, education, and community partnerships to address pressing environmental challenges and to inspire broader societal understanding of environmental chemistry. The award recognizes impactful service to the American Chemical Society (ACS) Division of Environmental Chemistry (ENVR).
Description: One awardee will be selected each year. The awardee will receive a plaque and $2,000. The awardee is expected to attend and be recognized at the Fall ACS National Meeting.
Eligibility: Nominees must be members of the ACS Division of Environmental Chemistry at the time of nomination.
Previous recipients are not eligible for nomination within five years of receiving the award.
]]>Purpose: To recognize sustained and distinguished contributions to the field of environmental chemistry by mid-career and established investigators with 10-30 years of experience beyond their graduate and postdoctoral appointments.
Description: One awardee will be selected each year. The awardee will receive a plaque and $2000. The awardee is expected to attend and be recognized at the Spring ACS National Meeting.
Eligibility: The primary criteria for this award are (i) an outstanding research record (50%) and (ii) impactful contributions to ENVR (50%). The nominee’s research record will be evaluated based on excellence in basic or applied research, publications or patents, commercialization of new technologies, and reputation in the field. The nominee’s service to ENVR can include contributions to governance (e.g., service on the Executive Committee), engagement at meetings (e.g., organizing symposia, dedicated record of presentations), service in committees, participation in initiatives (e.g., judging the Certificate of Merit presentations), and other outreach and service that promotes the field of environmental chemistry. Nominees must be in good standing and have at least five years of membership in ENVR at the time of nomination.
Nomination: All nominations must be made by a member of ENVR; self-nominations are accepted. The following information is required:

]]>In this interview with Raymond Blackwell for Chemical & Engineering News (C&EN), Sherine Obare—dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering—shares her journey from a curious student influenced by a great chemistry teacher to a pioneering researcher and academic leader. She discusses the importance of interdisciplinary science, environmental applications of nanotechnology, and the value of working across academic boundaries to solve complex global problems.
Sherine Obare was the chair of the division from 2022-2023, an ACS fellow and dean of the Joint School of Nanoscience and Nanoengineering at North Carolina Agricultural and Technical State University and University of North Carolina at Greensboro
Obare’s graduate research focused on detecting lithium ions and understanding lithium-ion gradients in batteries, which led her to an interest in environmental chemistry. Her postdoctoral work focused on the role of nanomaterials in the environment and their potential applications.
As a faculty member, she continued her research on the role of nanomaterials in addressing environmental issues and understanding their impact on the environment. Obare is now passionate about educating and training students to work across disciplinary boundaries, as she believes it is essential for addressing complex problems in the world.
]]>“I continue to be inspired by the importance of interdisciplinary research and ways of thinking and finding ways to help others work effectively across disciplinary boundaries. For example, when I was in grad school, students were supposed to be quite subdisciplinary—you could be an organic chemist or an inorganic chemist or a physical chemist or an analytical chemist. When I was a graduate student, I was fortunate to have the opportunity to work in a lab where there were no formal boundaries, and this provided me and my lab mates with important ways of thinking. Today, we see how important it is to educate and train students to work across boundaries—and not just chemistry boundaries, but across the sciences and engineering and even the social sciences.”

Before graduating with a biochemistry degree from the University of Detroit Mercy in 2019, Tiffany Tieu Ngo developed her X-ray fluorescence skills conducting research with Benvenuto. “It gives you this self-confidence that you can do this as a scientist,” says Tieu Ngo, now a senior analytical chemist at IsleChem LLC in Grand Island, NY.
