If thick and heavy walls are used in the interior of a straw bale house, the efficiency of the home is improved dramatically over using only straw bale walls (results will vary depending on the local climate).

Adobe and other earthen materials are about as ecologically sound as you can get. These thick adobe walls are a very important part of the heating and cooling system for the home. They absorb excess heat in the summer to keep the home comfortable. In the winter the adobe walls passively store the heat from the sun during the day in order to keep the house warm at night. Concrete Is the primary material used for house foundations. It is very polluting to manufacture and contributes a significant amount of greenhouse gasses to the planet. A rubble trench foundation, such as the type used in this straw bale home, reduces the amount of concrete by over 50%. A rubble trench foundation replaces the majority of the concrete with broken stone. 

This rubble trench foundation was approved for this home by a structural engineer, and therefore was accepted by the local building codes. Even though it uses much less concrete than a conventional foundation, structurally it is just as strong.

The EV1 electric car by General Motors was was produced from 1996 through 1999. It was the first modern production electric vehicle to hit the road and was availible through a lease program through the manufacturer. Despite its short life (the vehicles were ultimately all recalled by General Motors and destroyed), I believe the aesthetics of the EV1 surpass any electric car on the road today. The design hit a sweet spot of being visually distinctive without being too outlandish. The form made a visual statement that this car was different. It was nice to look at and a blast to drive.

Driving the EV1 convinced me that electric cars were the future of transportation. It would be another decade before commercially available all-electric automobiles would be on the road again.  Following are photos that I shot of the EV1 in Los Angeles, California.

• How easy is it to deal with your local electric utility company when going solar, and why are some utility companies trying to discourage you from using solar electricity?

Adding solar panels that generate electricity to your existing home has never been as easy and as economical as it is today. In my straw bale house, which is featured on the Building With Awareness web site, the entire structure was designed from the ground up to be powered by the sun. Everything from the slope and direction of the roof—to the electrical appliances in the home—were chosen to make solar generated electricity a viable option.

But what about the vast majority of homes out there that were designed and built in an age when solar power was not even an option? How do you go about bringing an older home into the 21st century by using free energy from the sun to run the lights, televisions, refrigerator, and heating and cooling systems? How easy or hard is it to go solar?

We will use our office building here at Syncronos Design as the test structure for going solar. The building is at least 50 years old (and one source recently told us that two-thirds of the building is closer to 100 years old). The structure was built and used as a single family residence until it was converted into an office about 12 years ago by the previous owner. Because of this we will be dealing with typical issues that come up with older structures.

This blog in the months to come will be a real-world account of the entire process of getting bids and having the equipment installed. We will tell you why we made certain decisions and what we would do differently in the future. As in the Building With Awareness book and video, you will learn what works well and what can be improved upon in the future. Please check back and follow our progress as we convert this building to the use of clean solar electricity.

Note the relatively few number of solar panels on the roof. This 1.2 kilowatt pv system provides all of the electrical power for the structure. The metal roof is an ideal surface for collecting rain water for the buried cistern that supplies all of the non-potable water. The long side of the home is angled to face south for maximum solar gain. Building a small home costs less to build and less to maintain over the years.

One of the most enjoyable natural materials to work with is earth plaster (which is also referred to as mud plaster and clay plaster). It is also known as mud plaster and clay plaster. The material is as simple as the name implies. Earth plaster is nothing more than sand and clay (with chopped straw, if desired) mixed together in the proper proportions to prevent cracking. When mixed and applied properly, this wall covering will be hard, durable, and beautiful. In many regions of the country, earth plaster can even be used on the exterior walls and may easily last for seven to ten years or more without any maintenance.

One advantage of earth plaster in a natural hybrid home is that the color of the plaster itself can eliminate the need for any paint. This is good for the environment and can reduce construction costs. Earth plaster walls can be made in almost any color you desire. Even white walls are possible. For color tints, natural pigments can be added to the white plaster, and a range of colors can be created from yellow to red to green.

In a natural hybrid home such as this, the wall finish is a major visual attribute to the overall look of the house. The earth plaster walls have a rich patina that is not possible with paint alone. The material is breathable, unlike many paints and stucco. This is ideal for straw bale construction in that moisture from within the walls can evaporate out. Breathability is important in any wall system, and particularly important when building a straw bale or adobe home. The material is also easy to apply by beginners. This is especially true for the initial coat, and for my home an all-volunteer crew was used to apply the first inch of mud to the walls. Earth plaster can be applied directly to the straw bales (code permitting). The fibers of the bales create a very strong bond with the mud, and stucco netting is neither necessary nor desirable. It is unfortunate that some codes still require wire netting on the bales.

Although earth plasters can be very durable, you will not want to use them indoors where direct water contact will be probable. The walls in direct proximity to sinks and showers should be coated with tile or a water-resistant plaster such as lime.

This straw bale home used a three-coat system of applying the earth plaster for the straw bale walls. Two coats were used for the adobe walls. For the straw bale walls, the first coat was quite thick (around an inch). This coat filled in all of the irregularities of the straw bale wall. The second coat was used to even out any undesired undulations in the first coat. The final coat was just a skim coat to add the desired color and texture. On a couple of walls, the final skim coat was gypsum plaster. This was used in areas where more durability was desired. Remember that a gypsum-based plaster has a short working time before the plaster sets. Once set, you can no longer smooth it out. Earth plasters, on the other hand, can be worked for days. This is quite an advantage for the do-it-yourselfer, and you will be able to work at your own pace to create the desired finish.

Sometimes it is desirable to have a lighter color wall than the natural brown of conventional earth plaster. This helps to reflect more light around the room. On this two-toned wall a thin coat of white earth plaster has been applied as a finish coat to the brown mud plaster.

In two days , an all volunteer crew mixed and applied the first coat of mud for this home. The premixed clay and sand is sifted to remove pebbles. (This premix was purchased from an adobe supplier; you can also mix your own.) The sifted mix is then shoveled into a large cement mixer, followed by a couple of handfulls of dry chopped straw and a bit of powdered wheat paste. Wheat paste is the secret ingredient that makes the mud more water resistant and prevents dusting (clay dust sticking to your hand when you touch the wall after it is dry). All of the ingredients are thoroughly mixed in a dry state before adding water. Now we are ready to trowel the mud onto the walls. With 20 helpers, a lot of mud can be applied in just a couple of days. The process is fun, easy to learn, and the community effort adds to the enjoyment. In addition, the surface of these interior mud plastered walls will look great for decades.

Despite this fact, many people consider mud and straw to be insubstantial materials. Why is this? It seems like the more we process a material, the more we accept it. Remove any tell-tale signs of its origin, and most of us are more comfortable buying and using it. This not only permeates construction, it is even accepted in the food we eat. For example, highly processed ingredients, stripped of their naturally occurring nutrients (and original flavor), are in many of our basic foods. Loaded with processed flour, corn syrup and trans-fats, modern food has a longer shelf life, but our own lives are shortened as a result.

And when selecting construction materials, we do not question glass windows or fiberglass insulation that is made out of melted sand (silicon). Cement is a highly processed natural material (limestone), and even a wooden 2×4—which has little resemblance to a tree once the bark, needles, and leaves are removed—is perfectly acceptable. Yet straw, adobe blocks, earth plaster, and other materials are often viewed by the general public as not being substantial enough. Materials that can decompose back into the earth without any ill effects are not trusted. Yet this is how nature designed everything: that there be no waste in natural systems, and that everything eventually goes back into the environment for later use.

I once spoke to a building-product manufacturer that said his product would last for 1,000 years. I thought to myself, “How many buildings are worthy of lasting 1,000 years?” The reality is that the structure may last for 50-75 years, and then be torn down because the structure was not adapted to a new use. The demolition waste then sits around for another 1,000 years. Is this what we need? It seems that the ideal material will last as long as desired, and then dissolve back into the earth at the appropriate time.

Natural materials fit this “Live Long and Dissolve” concept perfectly. With a properly designed green home, the materials will give decades, or even centuries, of service. There will always be the need for some extremely robust and durable materials; however, these materials do not need to be used for everything. Nor should clay, straw and wood be used for everything. Thought should at least be given to the pros and cons of each choice. Where appropriate, materials such as earth plaster may be the perfect selection. For example, I love the aesthetics and ecological value of earth plaster, and the interior walls in my home look as good as the day the mud dried. You can learn more about earth plaster mixes and application techniques in the “Building WIth Awareness” DVD and Guidebook

The straw bales are now in place, and it is time to complete the rough-in of the electrical wiring for the home featured in Building With Awareness. In order to meet code requirements, an electrician is hired for this procedure. As I mentioned in a previous article, some of the wiring for the house had been placed within the adobe walls while the bricks were being laid. For the straw bale walls, a chainsaw is used to cut one-and-a-half-inch deep channels into the bales. The electrical wire is pushed into these notches and run to the electrical outlets and switches in each room. The wire can also be pushed into the seams between the bales. The end of a blunt wooden stake can be used to push the wire into the notches or the bale seams. The wire used here is called UF cable, which stands for Underground Feeder. The boxes for electrical plugs and switches are made out of either plastic or metal. We used metal boxes for durability and for the ease of ganging multiple boxes together. A long wooden stake is secured to the box with screws and then pushed into the bale like a large spike. Some straw must be cut away where the box is recessed into the bale. Before the box is pushed securely into place, the electrical wire is threaded into the unit from the rear. The front edges of the boxes are kept at least one inch away from the surface of the straw bales, to allow for the thickness of earth plaster and/or gypsum plaster that will be applied to the surfaces of the walls at a later date.

Every wire in the house will wind its way through the walls and ceiling to the main circuit breaker box. Wiring will also run to electrical switches and ceiling and wall light fixtures. Even though this home generates all of its own electricity using the photovoltaic panels on the roof, all the AC
electrical wiring—from the circuit-breaker box to the wall plugs—is identical to that of a conventionally-powered home.

If you are using recessed light canisters in the ceiling, make sure they can < accomodate compact fluorescent bulbs, which will make the home much more efficient in terms of energy use. You may also want to install wiring for ceiling fans, since they use only a fraction of the electricity that an air conditioner uses, and can keep a room quite comfortable just by circulating the air.

As we complete the electrical wiring of the house, we will also be installing
phone cable, TV cable, and thermostat wiring.

Now we are ready to install the windows. This in one step in the building process that is very satisfying from a visual standpoint. Once the windows are in place, the various rooms—and the house in general—begin to have the feeling of a finished space.

The purpose of windows is to allow light and fresh air to enter the home, to allow proper ventilation, and to keep either very hot or very cold air—not to mention rain or snow—from getting inside the house in summer or winter. Windows give one a feeling of protection from the outside world while still permitting a connection to it. Small window panes—set into the larger window space by horizontal and vertical strips of wood called “muntins”—create a soft divide to the view outdoors.

It is this solid/transparent window unit that helps to define the space of the room. This is why walls made entirely of glass can actually give one an uneasy feeling. There isn’t enough boundary or separation between the indoor space and the outdoor space, so the indoor/outdoor divide becomes ambiguous and vague.

When choosing windows, one should think of how they will function in all weather conditions. Most of this equation can be worked out in the early design stages of the home, however it is worth reconsidering at this stage of construction. Can the windows be left open in the rain, both for ventilation and for allowing the sounds of the storm to be heard inside the room? Would an awning window (which is hinged at the top) be better in some areas of the house so as to prevent rain from blowing in and damaging the window sill and items inside the house?

You will also want to look at the direction of the prevailing breezes in your area and decide if a left or right-side hinge will allow the window to act as an air scoop. In any case, it is also good idea to have at least a few of the windows open in the opposite direction, since wind direction will vary from time to time.

As a general rule, windows that are hinged on one side—and therefore open and close like a door—are better at preventing drafts and air leaks than windows that slide in a track. Sliding windows are more apt to let air leak in because the seal must be loose enough to allow the window to slide back and fourth easily, whereas hinged windows press against a gasket which creates a nice tight mechanical seal.

For the windows on the south side of my home, I chose to utilize both awning and casement (hinged from the side) windows. This turned out to be a good choice, as the awning windows ventilate the home during a rainstorm, while in good weather, all the windows can be left open. As I said, the casement windows act as an air scoop to move the air around within the house for ventilation.

For proper ventilation, it is essential to have both high and low windows within the home. This permits the natural escape of excess heat, even in still air. Since heat rises, cooler air will enter the lower windows as it exits through the upper windows. I have a high window in my loft and a ventilation door in the upper west wall of my main living area. Since the west wall is blasted by the late afternoon summer sun, this ventilation door was made opaque so as to prevent heat gain. This vent has both an inside- and outside- hinged door, with eighteen inches (the thickness of a straw bale wall) in between. In cold weather, I install an insulating panel in this space to < minimize heat loss from the room. During summer months, the inside vent door is opened with a pole in the evening to allow the heat of the day to escape and cool down the interior thermal mass walls. The outside door is usually left open during the summer. In this part of the country, summer months usually bring heavy rains, so this outside door acts as an awning to prevent the rain from blowing in, even when it is open.

Number one, it saved us time and money in that around 80% of the bales were placed over one weekend. In addition, those that volunteered their time received free instruction on how to work with straw bales. Everyone wins. I placed a few notices around town to announce the straw bale workshop. Around 25 enthusiastic individuals showed up. There is such an energy and feeling of community when people from your local community show up to help. The magnet is the straw bale walls as this materials captures the imagination.

Unlike wood frame construction, people are drawn to the do-it-yourself concept of working with these giant blocks made from wheat stems. It is a waste material that is being given a second life as insulation and the solid matter of the wall. The thickness of the walls is appealing and the construction process is easy to understand within a couple of hours of hands-on work. The vertical seems of the bales are staggered just like bricks. Notches are cut wherever the bales must fit around one of the 4×4″ posts. This is accomplished with an electric chain saw. The chain saws are powered by the photovoltaic panels on the roof of the small workshop that was discussed in previous articles. When necessary, the bales can be split in half and are retied with baleing twine.

The bales are pinned with long shafts of bamboo, wood, rebar, or some other sort of material. The pins are either placed on the outside of the bales or driven down from the top through the center. The material and the placement of these pins may be determined by your local building codes. Exterior pins are the preferred method if permitted in your area. New Mexico required interior pins.

once stacked, a chain saw is used to bullnose the corners around windows and doors. This is an artistic decision as some prefer to leave the corners sharp and angular. With the walls now in a solid form, the interior spaces of the rooms can be experienced with volume and scale. The spaces are now contained and have views visible through the openings for doors and windows.

There are only a couple of conventional frame walls within the home. These are used as plumbing walls as running pipes through straw bale and adobe walls should be avoided. Leaks could bring moisture into the walls, which is not good for any type of construction, particularly straw bale. In addition, fixing a leak inside a wood frame wall is much easier.
